XP via RIS installation on 32 Satellite Pro A200 laptops

Hi,
Can anyone help? I'm trying to install 32 laptops (Satellite Pro A200) via Windows 2003 Server Remote Installation Services. I've got past the problems with network cards and now have these working by adding the drivers into a $OEM$, $1, Drivers, Nic folder and thought that it might be simple to use the same solution to install the drivers for the SATA controller. How wrong could I be! I'm now pulling my hair out. The machines have the drivers installed in the same way ($OEM$ etc) in a directory marked sata. I have used the drivers from Intel's site - extracted to floppy disk and copied from there. Every time I try to re-image I get the same error "Windows did not detect any hard disk drives" and it's driving me crazy! I have edited risstnrd.sif, textsetup.oem etc etc to no avail.
I found a link on Toshiba's German site for downloading drivers in this situation but the link is pretty slow I've tried to download those drivers now from three separate locations (3 different ADSL accounts) and each one starts off at about 36k per sec then dwindles down to bytes per second and then fails. (It's only a 21Mb file!)
Has anyone managed to deploy these laptops via RIS? If so can you please let me know how you did it and what drivers you used?
Many thanks,

Hello Mark
In my opinion RIS installation is pretty complicated theme and I am really skeptic someone will be able to help you. If you have some time try to use advanced search and check the results for RIS as searched term.
Other way you can create your own recovery DVD and use it for OS installation. For recovery procedure you need about 20 minutes.

  • Cannot install WinXP on Satellite Pro A200 - No HDD

    Hi,
Please can someone help me. I've just brought 52 Satellite Pro A200 laptops. They come with Vista pre-installed, but I want to wipe them and install Windows XP. However I have a big problem - when I put my XP CD in and boot from it and click Enter to continue, it tells me that the Installation cannot continue as Windows found no hard drives (although I can boot in Vista so I know the HDD are ok).
    Thanks for looking,
    Matt Courtman

I too had the HDD problem. Its because there are no drivers on the XP CD for SATA hard drives. What you have to do is use some free software called NLite and merge the SATA drivers with the files off the XP CD. (It really is ace). Available at
    http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/nLite.shtml
Read this page it tells you exactly how to do it.(
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Install-Windows-XP-On-SATA-Without-a-Floppy-F6-47807.shtml). If I can manage it then anyone can. Using the NLite software you copy the contents of your XP CD to your hard drive. Then you download the SATA drivers (available from the tosh site), then you integrate the drivers with your XP CD files. Finally you create an ISO image and burn it to CD. When you then boot off your new CD and install XP, it detects the SATA drive. Hey Presto!!!

  • Satellite Pro A200 - Is 26 minutes of battery life normal?

    Hi All,
My Satellite Pro A200 laptop is just over 1.5 years old (or young :P) and I have a huge problem with the battery - it only lasts for a total of _26 minutes_ under "high performace" mode in Vista - other power modes increase the time by only 5-7 minutes.
I have tweated the system setup to:
    - run as few programs at startup;
    - to use as little memory in relation to graphics (as in diabled vista themes, and "fancy" operations such as show contents of window whilst dragging).
    - remain on the lowest brightness level.
The programs that do run on startup are my anti virus (F-Secure), and ATI catalyst control.
I have also cleaned the registry of any conflicts and regularly virus scan.
I have used Ubuntu on this laptop as well and the battery life is not that much better, which brings me to the conclusion that the battery is nearing its end.
I was wondering if this battery life time (26 minutes max on high performace) is normal for a laptop after only 1.5 years?* (I don't remember how long it lasted when I first bought it).
Also, I have a laptop from other manufacturer of 2 years and the charge of its battery lasts a minimum of 4 hours (on Windows XP).
Both notebooks batteries are 6 cell.
Any suggestions of how to improve my battery life?
    Thanks in advance.

    >Satellite Pro A200 laptop is just over 1.5 years old and I have a huge problem with the battery - it only lasts for a total of 26 minutes under "high performace" mode in Vista
The battery working time depends on different factors:
If different hardware parts like CPU, GPU, HDD, ODD, display are running with highest performance then your battery working time will decrease dramatically
Additionally if you would lose an stronger battery (9 cell or 12 cell) then you should be abele run the notebook much longer using battery power.
Furthermore the battery loses the own performance systematically and after a long time of usage you will have to replace the battery.
However, if you want you could check the Vista Power Options in order to increase the battery working time:
    Here is a nice article:
How to handle the power management features of Windows Vista
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD84026Q0000R01.htm
But in worst case you will need a new, stronger battery

    Hi
    >I tried to repair the Winsock using Microsofts articles with no luck
I assume you are meaning this MS knowledge base article:
[How to determine and to recover from Winsock2 corruption in Windows Server 2003, in Windows XP, and in Windows Vista|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259]
Well, I searched a little bit around and found out that the solution described on 811259 article doesnt help in all cases
So searched on 3rd party website and someone has suggested to try this advice.
    Its also from Microsoft:
*[How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in Windows XP|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357 ]*
So check it out maybe it helps
If not, then you might be forced to reinstall your OS because the repair option is not included in the Toshiba recovery CD ;(

  • Satellite Pro A200 failing to connect with iphone hotspot via wifi

Apologies if I get some of the technical jargon wrong but I pretty useless when it comes to IT issues.
I have a Satellite Pro A200 and had problems connecting to various wifi connections.
The computer would see the wifi connection and connect to it but i wasn't able to connect to the internet.
The office issue has now been sorted by our IT support guy (security settings on the new router we too complex for my PC or something like that) but he wasn't able to solve the problem of not being able to connect to my iphone to use the 'hotspot' feature via wifi.
Does anyone know a way of solving this or is it a simple fact of the laptop being too old and really needs updating?
Thanks for any assistance anyone is able to give.

    > Does anyone know a way of solving this or is it a simple fact of the laptop being too old and really needs updating?
This is not a question of notebook age
As far as I know not all mobile phone providers support this
You should firstly ask your mobile provider if you can use the tethering function.
If this would be supported my mobile provider, then you have to connect the iphone to the notebook firstly
For that youve got two options: you could use the BT connection (in such case check if notebook supports BT too) or via USB cable provided with the iPhone.
(PS: As far as I know tethering is support by iOS3.0 and higher)
After the iphone has been connected to the notebook you need to enable the tethering on iphone.
Under Settings -> Network you should see the option internet tethering this need to be enabled.
Now you should be able to see that in Network & sharing Center of the control panel.

  • Satellite Pro A200: Card Reader does not work after XP installation

    Hi...
I have removed Windows Vista from my Satellite Pro A200 in favour of XP Home.
I'm much happier with the machine now but am unable to get any response from the Card Reader. There's no mention of it in the User's Manual that came with the machine.
I can't find any reference to it in the Control Panel's Hardware Manager and nothing changes in there when I insert an SD memory card.
I didn't have cause to try the reader prior to removing Vista, so I don't know if it ever worked... although I imagine that it did.
Running a search for a driver in the download section didn't have any success and this forum has no direct answers.
Does anyone have any idea what I need to do to get this to work?
    Popa Mintin.

    Hi
I dont see any serious reasons why your card reader shouldnt run/function with installed Windows XP.
What you need is the right driver.
The Toshiba driver page provides all Win XP drivers and there is also an XP driver for the multi card reader.
You need a Texas Instruments Flash Media Driver. This is a driver for your Bridge Media Slot.
This slot lets you insert either a SD card, Memory Stick (Pro) or xD picture card.
    Cheers

  • WXP WLAN Driver installation on Satellite Pro A200

    Hello,
I installed Windows XP SP2 for a customer on Satellite Pro A200 (PSAE7E) and installed after is talked to the German support hotline every driver like in the test-instal.txt but I don't get the Atheros WLAN card work.
It is an ar5bxb72 from Atheros, but no way.
I get every driver in that list working with the hardware but not the WLAN-card although I installed it like in the list.
Anybody got a hint for me?
    Greets
    Marco

    Hi dude
Are you sure the notebook was equipped with the Atheros WLan card? According to some information which I found in the internet, this notebook was delivered with Intel or Atheros WLan card!
I have checked the Toshiba page provides an Intel WLan drivers and Atheros Wireless Lan Client Manager. The Wireless Lan Client Manager is not the driver but only the tool which helps you configure your wireless network card and gives you more configuration options than the windows embedded configuration functions.
I would recommend downloading the WLan driver from this Toshiba WLan portal:
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/wlan/
By the way; if you use XP on this Vista preinstalled notebook then you will have to update the BIOS to the XP version too!
    Greetings ;)

  • Satellite Pro A200 - Fn keys does not work with Windows Vista

    Hello,
I own a Satellite Pro A200-PSAE7E and a retail license for Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit (with SP1) installed on it.
Before installing Vista, I upgraded the BIOS to the most recent version available on the Toshiba site ([http://it.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/vista_drivers.jsp?service=IT]).
BIOS version is now 2.20-WIN32 contained in this file: [http://support.toshiba-tro.de/tedd-files2/0/bios-20080404121735.zip]
After the successful installation of the operating system, I installed the "Value Added Package" ([http://support1.toshiba-tro.de/tedd-files2/0/vap-20080109135106.zip]) which contains the "Flash Cards Utility". In my understanding, the installation of the "Value Added Package" should enable the Fn keys usage.
This doesn't seem to be true or not completely true.
    Here is what happens.
    - Before the installation of the "Value Added Package" all the Fn keys didn't work.
    - After the installation of the "Value Added Package", if the TCrdMain.exe process is running, all the Fn keys don't work.
    - If I remove the TCrdMain.exe from the startup and I reboot the PC, only some Fn keys work (Fn+ESC, Fn+F1).
There is no way (or I didn't find a way) to make all the Fn keys working.
Does anybody know how to solve this problem?
    Thanx in advance,
    mme000

I do not know for sure but it can be because of SP1. I have installed Vista Ultimate on A200 and all listed stuff (drivers, tools and utilities) from Toshiba support page.
Does your installations Vista DVD contains SP1 or you have installed it on your own? If you install Vista Ultimate (without SP1) and all stuff from Toshiba support site following Installations Instructions order.

  • Satellite Pro A200 - Can't install Windows 7 due missing CD/DVD driver

Hello, I have a Satellite Pro A200, PSAE4E-046018N5 and I'm trying to install Windows 7 but I can't pass from step one because it doesn't found a driver:
A message box saying: A required CD/DVD drive devise driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD or USB flash drive, please insert it now.
    -What to do?
    CD-ROM is a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20N ATA, the actual driver have version 6.0.6002.18005 (date:2006-06-21)
    Best regards
    /peter

    Hi Peter,
Do you try an upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 at the moment? If yes please try a new and clean installation of Windows 7. Does this work?
Another question: Is your CD/DVD drive working properly or is it listed with yellow exclamation mark in device manager?
In your case I would try to remove the drive from device manager and restart the notebook. After this the drive will be recognized automatically.

  • "Common module" missing for XP on Satellite Pro A200

    Hello everyone,
I received my Satellite Pro A200 (PSAE7) laptop with a Vista OS.
I have made a fresh & clean XP installation on it using the Toshiba's installation instructions document.
Everything is working fine except my Fn+F6 Fn+F7 Fn+F8 hotkeys for Wireless and screen brightness.
I have made a few search over the internet and I found that page :
Looks like that I need to setup "common module" installer in order to make work those hotkeys.
But the problem is that the "common module" is not available on the driver page for XP ....
If I change the OS type to Vista there is "Value Added Package" available but it's not compatible on XP ...
I tried to download and setup a "common module" for Sat Pro A120 model but i got an "TVALZ" error during the installation ....
Did Toshiba support forget to put online a "common module" installer for XP for Sat Pro A200 ??
    How can I make work my Fn+F6 Fn+F7 Fn+F8 hotkeys ?
Any help will be really appreciated !
    Thanks,
    Can

    Hello darkmatterman,
First of all thanks for you reply and for your tips about the Bios version (Vista vs XP).
The first day I received my laptop on Vista OS, I already made a Bios update "the Vista compatible one". So my Bios is v1.70 actually.
I will try monday morning to update the latest XP compatible Bios version which is v5.20...
Do you know if it's possible to apply the latest XP bios upgrade on a bios which was already been upgraded with a Vista compatible version ?
And if the XP comptabile Bios upgrade works, do you think that I will need to setup my fresh XP again (with all Toshiba drivers & utils setup order...) ?
    Regards,

  • Satellite Pro A200 (PSAE4): DVD drive permanently blinking

    Hello,
I have been using a Satellite Pro A200 (PSAE4) laptop for some time now without any major issues.
My dvd drive (tsst crop TS-L632H) is no longer working for a few days now... More precisely, its LED is permanently orange blinking. Drivers are up to date. The eject button doesn't work either. No disc is inserted. The drive seems fine in the Windows device manager...
If opened manually and if a disc is inserted in the drive, I can't see any data. Can't boot on the disc either.
I'm running under Vista 32bit SP1 with the latest bios available on the toshiba website (2.40).
Since I need to fix the frequently reported "black screen" issue before login prompt, using the windows installation disc
Any help would be really appreciated.
    Thanks !

    Hi
According to you page you are not able to boot from any CD or DVD, not even from the Toshiba Recovery CD.
    Am I right?
To be honest, Ive no idea why such issue happened but in my opinion its related to the hardware malfunction and only the replacement could helps
I dont know how old you notebook is but maybe the warranty is valid and you could replace it for free
    What do you think?

  • Satellite Pro A200 - Supervisor Password Utility Setup fails

    Hello,

    BIOS version is now 2.20-WIN32
After the successful installation of the operating system, I started installing the various drivers and utilities downloading them from the Toshiba site.
When I try to install the "Supervisor Password Utility" the setup fails showing a message box which says "The serial number is invalid".
Same problem with another setup: "Flash Cards Support Utility"
Does anybody know how to solve this problem and which serial number is invalid?
    Thanx in advance,
    mme000

    Hi,
You are having the same trouble as other people on these forums.
If you want to fix it yourself, you would need to look at the disk image on the disk that came with your toshiba, figure out which version of the application was included on that, you might be able to find that version on the website for a different model and different country (for instance, on the canadian website, for a totally different computer than my UK computer, i found a version of the flashcards support utility that works with mine.) But i don't think its possible to see what's on the restore disk without instaling it, i.e. wiping everything off your harddrive in the process.
It really is extremely disappointing and frustrating. If anyone knows a way to communicate directly with toshiba about this problem without having to pay some sort of support fee, I would be very interested to hear about it. It seems noone from toshiba actually reads anything from these forum. It seems like a real wasted resource to me....

  • Satellite Pro A200 PSAE1E: Cannot get hotkeys working on Win XP

    Hi,
I have a Satellite Pro A200 PSAE1E which came with Vista on it, I have reinstalled it with Win XP Pro installed the relevant drivers from the Toshiba download page but cannot get the hot keys working.
I have installed the controls and control driver but this does not seem to work. Have seen a posting about 'common module' somewhere but can't seem to find any links to download it on the download page.
    Can anybody help?
    Many thanks
    Iain

The Controls utility and the Controls driver allow you to customize and preset TOSHIBA special button settings. But these are not a FN keys!!!
You need to install the Hotkey Utility if you want to use the FN keys.
    Further hint:
Its important that all Toshiba drivers and Utilities are installed in the right order.
On the Toshiba driver page you will find a txt file called installation instruction.
Please install all the drivers and tools in the order mentioned in this instruction!
    Greetings

  • Satellite Pro A200: How to create Dual boot; Vista & XP using Recovery CD

I have just purchased a Satellite Pro A200 lap-top, which was supplied with Product Recovery disks for both Vista and XP.
The Vista licence specifically also licences XP.
Can I set up a dual boot so that I can boot to either Vista or XP ? If so, how?
I would also like, as a third boot, Red Hat Linux 9.
    Any comments ?

Hmmm. Usually its possible to use two or more operating systems on the computer but as far as I know the Toshiba Vista Recovery CD formats the whole HDD during the Vista installation and this will lead to losing of the installed OS's.
Im not 100% sure about the XP Recovery CD The newest CD called RECO doesnt include expert mode which allows choosing between different partitions.
So I presume every usage of the Recovery CD will format the HDD and will erase the installed data. But of course you could try to install both OS and to check if the XP recovery CD allows choosing second portion for the OS installation.
If it will not function it seems that you will need either an original Microsoft XP CD or the original Vista CD to use both OS.

  • [Satellite Pro A200] - slowness during data transfer and heat problems.

    Hi folks.
I have a 1.5 y.o Toshiba Satellite Pro A200 with standard 200GB HDD. Since some time its behaviour is just... weird.
Sometimes system slows. It just behaves sluggish, it frequently freezes for a second during simple tasks such as entering the text. It;s more frequent during intensive data transfers (such as copying files through FTP from my LAN or copying from pendrive) but sometimes it happens even when no other app than the Firefox is working. It's not that apparent, so I wonder - will service take it under warranty conditions (which means - is there a probability that they'll say that everything is perfect and charge me for this?)
The computer was on the warranty repair once, they replaced HDD with other one. Is it possible that the other one has some troubles as well (S.M.A.R.T. check discovers nothing). Or maybe it's faulty SATA controller?
Other thing is the temperature. During normal work (Internet, MS Word) both cores works at 60*C. When gaming the temperature can rise above 90*C and the computer sometimes shuts down. I assume that the problem is the dust accumulated inside the laptop but I can't see how can I clean it up.
Would you go to the service with such problems?

Virus scanners can slow a system down considerably, what Virus Scanner are you using?
If you have many programs installed, maybe its time to backup your data and reinstall Windows. I do it myself every year since Windows tends to get bloated and slow after a while.
As for the dust, you can blow it out using a Can of compressed Air sprayed through the main air vent (while the system is off).
Or if the dust buildup is really bad, you may need to send it to an Authorised Service Provider to get it dismantled and cleaned up.
