XP, Vista and Dual Core
I have a Lenovo N500 (Pentium duel core T3400 2.16, 3GB) Vista and my hard disk has failed (After 18 months!!!!).
The only recovery disks I have are XP Recovery/Downgrade.
I have put a new hard drive in and used the XP recovery disk, after the install XP boots for the first time and runs through the Lenovo post XP install, then on re-boot XP hangs during start-up.
The only way I can get XP to start normally is to boot to safe mode and disable one of the cores using MSConfig.
Given that it boots to safe mode with both cores enabled I figure that this is some problem with drivers/software. If I use SOS boot to try to get more info I get to the screen that list the processors memory etc and then it freezes, so not much help.
The laptop is up to date with all the drivers from Lenovo, and windows update. This happens with XP service pack 2 (This is what is installed from the recovery disk) and with SP3.
Have spent too long getting nowhere talking to Lenovo customer support in India, it looks like it will cost £45 to get a Vista disk sent to me!
If I can't get XP to work properly, does anybody know if you can use any Vista install media, or does it have to be a Lenovo Vista disk to work with the product key with the laptop?
Any help greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance
If your serial is for XP, you need the OEM version. That serial won't work with Retail version.
If you have Vista, you can use your serial. But you need to use phone activation because Lenovo's serial are blacklisted (al least with Windows 7 happens this issue).

Upgrading computer to Vista and Dual Core
I am planning to upgrade my computer to a dual core with Vista Home premium. This will entail a new hard drive with Vista and the reinstallation of all software. If I start to use LR now how do I save my library and images with related keywords so that they are useful when I re install LR
Thanks
Roger LiebermanYou'll be just fine, I have a dual boot setup (XP and Vista), and use the same library from both environments. Just remember that you have to use the same drive letter(s) for your image directories in both environments, unless you switch to using Vista permanently (in which case you can "reconnect" your image files, if the drive letters change)

The difference between Intel core I7 and dual core

Labview 7.1 and Dual Core Processors
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has encountered any problems using Labview
7.1 and the newer dual-core processors. I have a Dell Dimension DXPO51,
2.8 GHz Pentium D with 1 GB ram. There is NO virus software or any
other non-essential programs running in the background. The computer is
totally dedicated to controlling a machine.
Other NI boards installed: PCI-6221 for analog inputs, PCI-6602 for
reading encoders, PCI-7352 Motion Control board to control 2 motors.
The problem:
Periodically when I start my program, it locks up and I get the "Tell
Microsoft about this problem..." screen. After it exits out of Labview
and I restart, the Run arrow is not broken but the program will not run
until I make a change on the block diagram. Then I can run again.
Doesn't happen all the time, doesn't happen after running after a
certain amount of time, doesn't happen after a particular change is
made (i.e. adding case statements, adding an event, etc.). In other
words, totally random.
I have tried totally uninstalling ALL National Instruments software,
including cleaning the registry, and re-installing everything. Didn't
help.
The machine will be shipping with the executable file only but I'm still leary of problems arising due to this issue.
Any help or suggestions of things to try would be appreciated.
Thanks,
TeriHi Teri,
I've seen scattered reports of users having trouble with dual-processor
machines with earlier versions of LabVIEW, though I'm not aware of
verified solutions in those cases. The dual-processor operation
should be completely transparent to LabVIEW, although I know XP has had
some difficulties in providing the abstraction correctly. A
workaround that has been successful in the past is to set the processor
affinity for LabVIEW to a single processor. This should eliminate
the dual-processor nature of the system from consideration. If
the problem still recurs after that, then the issue stems from another
source and we can investigate further. Does it show this behavior
with any program (or just by opening the LabVIEW environment)?
How often does this occur (10%, 50% of the time)?
Cheers,
Matt Pollock

K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum and Dual Core
I just received my new MSI K8N Neo4 LSI Platinum motherboard and I am waiting on my new processor AMD Athalon64 dual core 4400+. My questions are:
1. If the bios on the motherboard is not the latest one will the motherboard boot with the dual core processor. If not what are my options?
2. If I manage to boot, and all the components are new, assuming I will boot into DOS, can I make a bios update from there or I need to install Windows and then do a bios update?
3. And what are the bios update procedures for MSI motherboards?
Thanks a lot guys for helpQuote from: Dream_true on 30-June-05, 14:02:02
hi,
In order to use dual core CPU on the MB, update BIOS to the latest version (3.4 and above) before using it. After flashing BIOS, please enter BIOS Load Optimized defaults, Save&exit it, then change CPU to dual core one.
For how to update BIOS, refer to:
http://www.msi.com.tw/html/support/bios/note/award.htm
You can use the dual core without updating the Bios. However, your second core won't work until the update. So you can use the cpu without the correct bios version to install windows. -
P6N platinum and Dual Core Center
Hi,
When I attempt to use the Dual Core Center I get an error:
0xc0000005 Program failed to start, press OK to end.
I have updated the BIOS, Dual Core Center, Nvidea drivers, .NET framework etc no change.
Tech support told me that the Dual Core Cell chip on the board was bad so I got a second board without change.
I really don't care about the OC'ing features, I want to monitor temps and control fans.
I have tried Speedfan, it does not control the fans plugged to the mobo headers. Neither does Nvideas tool (Nview).
Infact nothing I have tried will control the fans.
Suggestions?
(Aside from returning both boards and going with a different brand)

I think the program is horrible...don't waste your time with it.
If it works, good! It doesn't tend to fuss.
But if it doesn't work, uninstall it.
CoreTemp and Everest like Jack says are the best.
Fan speeds however your out of luck with. You can submit a report through Speedfan to the author however. -
K9VGM-V and dual core, task manager recognises one core?
Motherboard : MSI K9VGM-V (Not OEM)
CPU : AMD Athlon X2 4200+
RAM : 1GB Corsair DDR2 667Mhz
GPU : Point of View 7900GS
OS : Windows XP Home SP2
I've had this setup for a while now, and only now noticed that my Task Manager is only showing information on one core and I can't set affinity for any program on the processes list. Device manager shows two instances of AMD ATHLON X2 4200+ but nothing else shows a sign. I've also looked through the game applications steam and it says I have 1 Physical and 1 Logical, surely this isn't right?
I have a version 1 BIOS and the MSI site says dual cores weren't compatible until the latest version of the BIOS (V1.8). I have download that and have reformatted my USB stick to FAT32 and have it all ready with the software this forum recommends. I have tried flashing once, and I couldn't get the flash software to boot, I have changed the boot sequence and most other options in the BIOS and it still doesn't boot. Does anybody know what settings I need for the process to begin?Ahh, I managed to flash the BIOS successfully after reformatting my drive once more. All I need to do is to reinstall some drivers from AMD now.

T60 Vista and Dual Monitor Support
I have a Lenovo T60 running on Vista 32-bit. I have the latest Video Drivers, but whenever my laptop comes out of hibernation I lose dual monitor support. Is there a solution to this problem?
The issue you're facing is a combination of a Vista "bug" and the video drivers. If you are using the latest video drivers, check to see that Vista is not managing the TMM - Vista has a bad habit of just remembering the initial setup, therefore when you take your computer off the dock, Vista doesn't like the change and will "conveniently" forget any variation of settings you may introduce.
Read this article on TMM for Vista (.doc file - read the first section)
Hope that helps

What's the difference between an Intel Core 2 Duo and Dual-Core Chip?
Does someone know if there's a difference between these two chips?
Thanks,
PaulYes. The Core Duo is a 32-bit processor, the Core 2 Duo is a 64-bit processor. The C2D is the second generation of Intel's Core lineup and is considerably faster than a CD at the same clock speed. Core 2 Duo processors are also available with four processors on the chip and are pin for pin replacements for the processors used in the Mac Pro - thus providing 8 processors rather than 4.
You can find a basic comparison here: http://www.apple.com/macbook/intel.html.
You can visit Intel's web site to find out everything there is to know about both processors.

About Quad Core and Dual Core PowerMacG5
Hi everyone,
A guy is selling two Power Mac G5.
I'm not so familiar with these G5 line-up, and i'm asking for help.
He send me pictures, he took pictures of both Power Mac's from inside.

Another one was written G5 two times(like this:
So can anyone help me which one is the Quad Core 2.5GHz? And is this Two Processor one from Late 2005 or older?

K8N Neo4 Platinum and Dual Core on Linux
I have solved my problem with getting both cores to work and thought I would post it here as info in case anyone encounters the same problem.
Bios 1.5 works fine, but when I installed it I used the option which prevents overwriting the boot block, and was only able to get one core to boot because of APIC problems. Doing a full flash prevented the IOAPIC bios setting from being turned off and allowed the board to be recognized as SMP compatible.
I guess part of the IOAPIC table must be in the boot block areaAfter few test i have changed a cd drive : from dvd-usb external to internal ide drive and W Xp
setup corretly.
But for me new problem:
now i have first O/S on SATA1 and secondary O/S (installed now) on primary IDE 1 channel,
and in any root i have one boot.ini and both boot.ini have a similar row (!?)
First installed on SATA1:
[boot loader]
timeout=0
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
Second Insatalled on IDE1:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
The second O/S now dont boot:
my intention is to copy a row from second boot.ini to first boot.ini ; but i ask for what parameter i use on "multi", "disk", "rdisk" ?
I hope on your help, please and sorry for my bad english.
Thanks -
Hi guys and girls
i know there is a massive problem with the DV series with the wifi as well as other stuff
Well my problem is that my wifi is working fine and i can get on the internet with no problems
but i cannot get the orange light to turn blue once windows is loaded
It stays orange until just before windows kicks in then the orange light goes out but my wireless assistant says its still on and i get on the net okay
when the screen dims itself after a while the screen goes into sleep mode or what ever it does and the orange light comes back on
but as soon as i run my finger across the touchpad it goes out again the the wireless is still working
i have tried every wireless driver that i can find
also when i uninstall the driver the orange light stays on for both on or off positiion using the wireless switch
Has anyone come across this before or have any suggestions please ????
Also on the keyboard all is working well apart from when i press the Capital lock key the light does not come on
many thanks
maggieI asked AMD Support just that question, plus clarification on the driver situation, and their response was to just use the 1.0.8.1 PowerNow/CnQ driver with X2 CPUs on Win2K. Given the slow uptake on Windows Server vs. the client systems I'm surprised they did not continue Win2K Server support for longer, in a market which is so important to them.

CoreTemp and Dual Core Center report differently.
In CoreTemp I get Idle cpu (its a q6600 stock) temperatures near the 55° degrees while DualCore Center reports around 30°. If I go to the bios window it reports the same as DualCore Center, is there an issue??? BTW I have an P7N SLI-FI. When I run all other monitoring programs I have it says the same as CoreTemp so which program do I believe. If I run Prime95 multithreaded I get around 100° C - 120° C so I'm wondering since I don't want to fry my cpu...

I really wouldn't believe either Dualcore center is rather buggy but not bad for reading voltage and temps I suppose. I'm going to recommend you try Realtemp, you can d/l it from techpowerup... http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/. It's highly accurate when calibrated per the documentation, and it explains in detail how your sensors work and also some really interesting information about C2D thermal properties. That's found here... http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/docs.php. The author has done extensive testing of intel cpu's to correctly determine tjmax and has written realtemp to be extremely configurable, accurate, and user friendly. -
Dual Core Center working in Vista but not XP on a dual boot system?
Hi All.
My system specs are:
Dual Boot Windows XP Pro SP2 and Windows Vista Ultimate
Temps for CPU in Vista averaging at 43 - 45 degrees in XP averaging at 38 to 42 degrees. It never seems to go much higher than 53 on Load.
Thermaltake Soprano tower
MSI K9N Diamond Motherboard
Hiper 580watt Modular PSU
4GB OCZ Gold 6400
AMD X2 6000+
2 X 300gb diamond maxtor 10 HDD
MSI Geforce 7800gt
DVD Rom
LG Dual Layer DVDRW+/-
I am running a dual boot system with Windows XP Pro SP2 on one partition and Windows Vista Ultimate on the other. Both operating systems seem to be operating properly except for an odd situation with Dual Core Center. In Windows XP Dual Core Center only indicates the Mainboard properties - No VGA, whereas on Windows Vista Ultimate Dual Core Center indicates both VGA & Motherboard properties. I have installed MSI Nvidia drivers for the Graphics card & also tried straight Nvidia drivers for the card but it has made no difference VGA will not show up in XP. Yet on installing Dual Core Center on the Vista partition VGA showed up immediately. Can anyone help.
If anyone can come up with an answer to this it would be a real help.
Many Thanks in advance.have you try to update/install the dual core driver from amd?
