XP with OSX
I'm going to run out and get the new intel based real soon.
I would like to install and run XP and OSX on the same machine. I need some direction on how to do this and how it will work to switch back and forth.

To run Windows XP on an Intel-based Mac, one can use either or both of the following approaches:
• Apple's Boot Camp Public Beta;
• Parallels Desktop for Mac
along with with a copy of Windows XP.
The key difference between these is that Boot Camp requires you startup in either WIndows or Mac OS X: you can only run one OS at a time. Parallels Desktop lets you run Mac OS X and Windows simultaneously.
Both approaches have straightforward installation instructions. If I were in your position, I'd opt for Parallels Desktop given the ability to with with both operating systems simultaneously.

MacBook Pro 8,1 – Intel Core i5 – 2.23 GHz (early 2011) New with OSX 10.6 – current on all updates.
I successfully installed rEFit. I used Boot Camp to install Win 7. All was great.
Then installed debian 6. Somehow after the debian install and restart (I know this sounds crazy) but I am now reduced to Win 7 only. rEFit is not present when rebooting nor is OSX or debian. Further, I am unable to force the install DVD to launch when rebooting, by holding C, D or F8. The Option key brings me to the grey screen with a padlock. I have attempted the root and local pw- no go. Restart holding D takes me to the windows boot manager. I have attempted several options within the Advanced Options; including – Repair Your computer, safe mode and “last known good config,” All of which did nothing.
I can see all my OSX files within win7. I tried to install the OSX within windows. Ya right, that did nothing..
I only desire to get back to OSX...
What are my options??Yes, you royally hosed up your machine.
You should first try to get your files off, any way you can to a external drive.
Your going to need to hold c and boot from the disk that came with your computer and a couple of screens in under the menu is a option for Disk Utility.
Select your drive and Erase with Security Option Zero, format the drive HFS+ Journaled and when that's finished (about a hour or so) then quit and install OS X from the installer.
I hope this works, but I suspect it won't. Others have hosed their machines trying to use a Linux disk without proper partition formatting too.
Another option might be to use another Mac to c boot off the Snow Leopard disk and install OS X onto a external drive, take that to the problem Mac and try holding option and booting off of it to erase your internal drive.
You could replace the drive.

Pop/Imap retrieving and redistribute in LAN with OsX Server
It's possible to download mail accounts hosted in my isp and redistribut'em in my lan with OsX Server with it's own mail server?
The scope is not to have a local server mail because we have ADSL and sometimes the line broke up...
We prefere have mail hosted more securely in our external isp.
But an internal mail server is a commodity very useful...

10.4 client problem with OSX Server 10.5.8
I have an late 2009 X_server with OSX 10.5.8 running, have binding to AD and enabled system as OD master. I have added an ad user to an od group and set a prefernce in the DOC to add the Group folder to the doc.
On my MBP mostly all goes well except for a question mark for ther group folder. But on an old G4 tower I'm testing with it just prompts me about not being assigned to a group and gives the option to apply settings. but the settinsg never take place. Has any had this problem before? Thanks in advance. ArtI've got the Audiotron working again. I found some info on basically opening the entire share to guest access. I tried changing "encrypt passwords" (global section) to "no" and that didn't help. Then I added this to the music share and everything works. Probably not the best security solution, but I'm behind a firewall.
In /etc/smb.conf added for the music share:
public = yes
only guest = no
writable = no
printable = no
(I still left "encrypt passwords = no" in the global section. I'm not sure if that made a difference or not.) -
Mac Mini with OSX server still OK?
HI All,
I was going to purchase the mac mini that was geared up to work best with OSX server however that option is now no longer available and the mac mini's have downgraded slightly in terms of quadcore processors and 2tb harddrives.
We run a small design studio, file sharing is becoming a large hinderance on workflow and I thought OSX server sounded like a good solution for someone with little knowledge of the area. We have four imacs, and three macbooks. Our team is growing fairly quick and that number should double next year.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Thanks,Just get the latest mac mini, add some external storage with a Thunderbolt 2 connection and that setup will work great for filesharing.
You will get gigabit network speeds and since it's Thunderbolt 2 the mac mini will have no problem to serve those files across the network.
Make sure you get external storage with a decent RAID setup like a Promise Pegasus for instance, and invest in a good back-up solution.
Then clone your mac mini OSX Server setup daily towards the RAID and you're good to go!
Get a Mac Mini with an SSD or Fusion Drive and 16GB of RAM. That'll keep you going for the next couple of years easy!

Help needed with OSX Server 10.5.8
We're running a headless Xserve (RackMac3,1) with OSX Server 10.5.8 that did its job flawlessly.
Now we want to update the Perl software from 5.8.6 to 5.20.0 or newer. After downloading the suitable version from CPAN we tried to install, but get the following msg:
Uh-oh, the C compiler 'cc' doesn't seem to be working.
You need to find a working C compiler.
Either (purchase and) install the C compiler supplied by your OS vendor,
or for a free C compiler try http://gcc.gnu.org/
I cannot continue any further, aborting.
Is there a way to install the missing tools remotely via the command line (SSH)? A step-by-step recipe would be most welcome.
- Harald -RackMac3,1 is PPC/G5 processor so you are not going to have an easy time with this. Perl 5.2.20 is bleeding edge (OS X 10.10.3 comes with v5.16.3).
I would leave Apple's installation of Perl, etc. on the server strictly alone and install MacPorts:

and work from there. You aren't likely to get a step-by-step recipe because its not an exercise a rational person would chose to spend time on.
Have you considered rewriting whatever features in your code require Perl 5.2.20 than to upgrade your server? Or buy a new server, you could probably pick up a Mini for about $200.

I have Keynote 6.1 and run it on a MacBookPro with OsX Mavericks. I can start Keynote, but I cant access the menu, it is stuck. What to do?
Try this repair for Keynote 6.2, ensure you complete all the tasks and in the order shown:
1 delete all the iWork applications if you have them, not just Keynote, using Appcleaner from Mac Update, its a freeware application
2 restart the Mac; Apple menu > restart
3 immediately after the start chime, press the shift key until you see the Apple symbol.
let it fully boot up, it will take longer as the OS is repairing the drive
4 when fully booted, go to Applications > Utilities > Disc Utility; click on the boot drive then First Aid tab and click repair disc permissions
5 when complete, restart the Mac normally
6 install Keynote from the Mac App Store, it will be updated to the latest verion which is 6.2

i got a macbook pro 13 inch core i5 late 2011 , it came with osx lion and i been using facebook videocalls normaly , now i updated to Mountain lion
but when i use facebook video calls in (safari ,chrome ) i see the window box but i only see my self i can hear my friends but cant see em, they also can see me and hear me but i just see me and hear them .
any ideas ?Your wifi problem sounds very much like the problem I had. The wifi would drop out, the icon showed it was still connected. If I turned it off, I couldn't turn it back on. Another user here pointed me to the problem, which was the wifi cable (the flat cable goint from the card to the motherboard). I found it on ebay for $13 and it's been running fine since I replaced it. This is the repair guide for your machine. The part number will be on there if you click the link.

S-Video adapter and analog TV works with OSX 10.5 but not Boot Camp 2.1(XP)
I bought a mini-DVI to S-video or composite adapter to use with an older analog TV. Works great with OSX 10.5 no problems. However, I currently have Windows XP running with Boot Camp 2.1 and it wont work with the TV. If I ever get an image it's three black and white fuzzy and distorted iterations of the monitor.
Since it works with OSX but not with XP i'm thinking its some sort of boot camp issue and not a problem with the hardware or adapter. Therefore, it should be solvable, right? Does anybody know how to fix this? Will upgrading to snow leopard and boot camp 3.1 solve it?Perform a custom install from the Mac OS X 10.5 disks and install only that component if possible; if not, use Pacifist to install it. In either case, rerun the combo updater for your Mac OS X version afterwards.

Hi, I am having a little trouble with exporting images to another drive and Catalogue and need some help if anyone can give me some advice
I am currently using Lightroom 5.6 and operating on a Mac with OSX Ver 10.9.5.
I am receiving an error problem when doing the following -
I am exporting selected photos from a particular Catalogue saved on Drive 1 to a folder created on another Drive where a Lightroom Catalogue has been created. In this Catalogue I have arranged for the images once exported to be moved to a different folder - I used the Auto Import process under the File dialogue box.
When processing the Export I receive an error message for each of the images being exported indicating the following -
Heading Import Results
Some import operations were not performed
Could not move a file to requested location. (1)
then a description of the image with file name
Box Save As Box OK
If I click the OK button to each image I can then go to the other Catalogue and all images are then transferred to the file as required.
To click the OK button each time is time consuming, possibly I have missed an action or maybe you can advise an alternative method to save the time in actioning this process.

Mac Mini (Jan 2013) with OSX 10.9.2 fails to start thunderbolt display
This is getting very annoying and is costing me valuable working hours!
I sit down to work, but have to spend hours getting my Mac Mini turn on and connect to my thunderbolt display again after having been in sleep mode or shut down. The only way I can make sure that the Mac Mini can wake the display again, is to physically remove the power from both devices and leave them off for many hours.
The problems began at some point after installing Maverick. Before that, everything was working without a hitch.
It is not the thunderbolt screen that is to blame. If I plug it into my MB 17'' with OSX 10.9.2, it turns on and works like a charm.
I've tried everything. Resetting PRAM, Resetting SMC, new cables, you name it. The only thing that works is to pull the plug on the devices and continue to work on my trusty Mac Book.
I can see that others are having similar issues and has had them for years.
Perhaps NOW is a good time to fix this mess Apple! Don't you think?vooid,
You are not speaking directly to Apple on these forums, Apple does not read or participate in them in any fashion. We are all end-user volunteers just like you . Den.thed has offered valid advice, if you have AppleCare (highly recommended) you can call AppleCare for telephone support. If you don't know that number you can begin locating it by clicking http://support.apple.com/kb/he57. If you don't have AppleCare you are still eligible as long as your machine is 1 year old (purchase date) or less. If you go 366 days, you cannot get AppleCare. In addition to the telephone support it extends the warranty from 1 to 3 years.

After spending several hours sorting out Canon Pixma OSX problems here are my thoughts:
Canon 860 Series (Pixma 868) Printer Problems with OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion) – links to Canon Support Site with Drivers and Software with install tips
Problem:
- New imac and MacBook Pro 2012 (OSX 10.8.2) had a problem using Canon Pixma 868 printer on network and would not scan or print using Canon Pixma software (Pixma MP Navigator 2.1 & Photo Print), which has advanced scanning and photo printing functions.
- When I connected the canon printer to my imac, OSX 10.8.2 automatically downloaded and installed drivers for Canon 860 series printer. I could then add the new printer (select ‘apple menu’ / ‘system preferences’ / ‘print and scan’ / “+”) and printer would work while connected via USB but could not get to print or scan over network wifi.
- The original Canon 860 Series CD does not work with 10.8 and the manual / online instructions did not make sense (as based on CD install).
Solution:
1) Install Canon Printer Drivers and Software (from official Canon site)
Go to canon support site, review FAQ, then download and install following Pixma 860 Series software & drivers for OSX 10.8 (links see below). The version I downloaded is in brackets but check for updated version. Full instructions are below.

2) Check Canon Printer and Software Working while connected via USB
Once you have downloaded and installed drivers and software and restarted computer, check that the printer and Canon Pixma software (Pixma MP Navigator 2.1 & Photo Print) are working via USB. Open the Canon IJ Network Tool App (Applications / Canon Utilities /IJ Network Tool / Canon IJ Network Tool App) and make sure you can see the Canon MX 860 series (xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx) and that it shows the correct SSID Wifi settings (under the Canon IJ Network Tool App ‘Setup menu’). This is normally done as part of the automatic install but worth double checking
3) Add new network printer using ‘apple menu’ / ‘system preferences’ / ‘print and scan’ / “+”).
After you have checked USB printing turn off printer, unplug the USB cable and shutdown the Canon IJ Network Tool App.
Then turn the printer back on and wait 30s. Then add a new printer using ‘apple menu’ / ‘system preferences’ / ‘print and scan’ / “+”). Once you select “+” (add new printer), wait 10-30s for the Wifi Networked Canon MX 860 Series printer to appear in the new window eg Canon MX 860 series (xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx) (Kind: “Canon IJ Network”)
DO NOT ADD THE MX 860 SERIES BONJOUR SCANNER (the Bonjour Scanner is the built-in software, is not needed and often appears first on the add printer list). The Canon scanner can be accessed used through the MP Nav EX Ver. 2.1.3 software (which has much better functions)
You will now have two Printer Canon MX860 (USB) and Canon MX860 (Wifi / Network). Set the Canon MX860 (Wifi / Network) as default and test print and scan
If the Wifi Networked Canon MX 860 Series printer does not appear, check the printer and make sure that the printer can see the wifi network. On the printer select Menu / Settings / Device Settings / Lan Settings / WLAN Setting List. It should say WLAN Active, identify the SSID and have an IP address
If the printer can not see the Wifi Network, plug the USB cable back in, then open the Canon IJ Network Tool App (Applications / Canon Utilities /IJ Network Tool / Canon IJ Network Tool App). Make sure you can see the Canon MX 860 series (xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx) and that it has your SSID settings (under setup), if it has this info, restart the computer and the printer and try againHi, thaks for response, meant to post as a discussion (not question), wanted to save others time if they get the same problem

When you add the printer, make sure you use IP > Jetdirect and the correct printer IP address. -
Printer is overprinting old jobs on top of new jobs. Using a Mac with OSx and a HP photosmart for over a year. this just started happening.
RReset printing system again and the restart in Safe Mode . This will clear some caches,to do this hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup tone until a progress bar appears, after it has fully booted restart normally and add the printer.
