Xp won't boot K9MM-v problem

:wall:Hi, I just installed a K9MM-v motherboard and it posts ok but XP won't boot. I'm using amd 4200+ cpu, 500w power supply, usb keyboard a, ps2 mouse, agp 6800xt video card and gskill 1 gig ddr2 800 pc2 6400 memory. It posts ok and bios setting are good I think but it hangs trying to boot xp. I noticed that on the opening screen it detects the memory as ddr2 800 64 bit. any ideas would be appreciated. thanks

thanks for the reply. This is not a brand new build. The only new components are the msi mb, amd 4200+ cpu and the gskill ram and a sata dvd drive. all the drives are identified in the bios and 1st boot disk is set to primary master hard drive with the xp os on it. The system works good with the old motherboard running an amd 2800+ cpu and 1 gig pc3200 ram and xp home on a 200 gig ide hard disk. I just got done installing a new msi motherboard with a amd 4000+ cpu in another computer for a friend with xp already installed on the hdd that had a amd 1600+ cpu and all I had to do was reregister xp.It booted right up.  I get the post screen identifying the cpu and counting the ram ok but I get the windows screen saying windows failed to start list. tried safe mode but it just reverts back to the POST screen. Psu is a Rosewill 500 watt power supply. the memory is brand new out of the box but I don't have another system to run memtest86 on this memory. am I possibly overlooking a BIOS setting? If the memory was bad wouldn't it fail the POST? This is the third motherboard upgrade I've done to this system and never had to do a fresh install just re register xp.  One other thing is there is no beep sound from the speaker connected to the header pins. Reversed the polarity and still no beeps. Speaker works good on other motherboard. Maybe ram compatiblity issue?

  • Playbook won't boot - Completely unique problem

Ok before anyone blasts me for posting before researching I would like to say that I have done my research and this post is my last hope.
I recently bought a second hand Playbook that was advertised as not working for $20. Me being a BB freak and my Wife and I just having a new baby (so no ex tra $) I said to myself "oh they just don't know what they are doing" well apparently neither do I.
This PB was won at a Christmas party this past December and the woman who won it, was never able to get it to turn on.
Now here's the weird part, this PB does not do what 99% of the other either bricked or drained PB's do. This one shows no signs of life at all if it is not plugged in, I will say here that I am only using the charger that came with the PB and no third party or uniusb's. Once I plug the PB in the red led comes on after about 5 seconds and stays on for exactly 10 minutes. From the hundreds of articles I could find I could not find one that showed the same symptoms.
Here is what I have tried so far.
#1. Just letting it charge for 24 hours
#2. Several different Stack methods (as a matter of fact, every single method that I came across)
#3. Trying to get the computer to recognize the PB by hooking up the USB cable, and trying several different ways to get the DM to recognize the PB. No luck, not even for that glimmer of a second like others have reported.
#4. Removing the back casing, after going online and making sure that there was no longer a warranty, and disconnecting the battery from the mother board for about an hour and then plugging the battery back in and hooking up the charger to see if there were any signs of life. NOTHING
#5. Disconnecting all of the pin connections from the mother board, then once again after an hour replacing the connections and trying to charge. Nada
#6. Removing the connections again and placing insulators between the mother board connections and the ribbon connections then placing the display with the batteries in a freezer bag, removing all of the air to stop condensation, then placing it in the freezer for about an hour and a half. Then letting it warm up to room temp and plugging in the charger. Nope
#7. I saw a post about "jumping" the battery by Knotty Rope. Turns out he has a different version PB than this one because the battery connector is completely different than the one he had. Could not trace the circuit enough to find a valid place to apply a 5V source to trick the PB into thinking it has the proper voltage.
Now after all of that I finally (don't ask me why I didn't start with this) tested the battery with my VOM and found that the battery only seems to have 0.91Vdc.....
I know that 0.91V means that the batteries are stone dead and probably have to be replaced and I'm ready to give up.
Update 1: After charging the battery again for about 12 hours I found that the battery has gone up to 0.98V. I just realized though that with the battery being this low the LED is probably using about 80% of the power being put into the unit, so I have disconnected the ribbon going to the LED indicator and I am going to try and charge it for the rest of the day and see if the battery can get a little more power.
Update 2: Ok I finally gave up on trying to charge the battery using the USB port and I carefully exposed the main battery connections and found that the batteries actually had 1.7V. After watching a YouTube vid I then cut the end off of an only USB cord, found the + and - power leads and attached an aligator clip to each. I then hooked up the leads after making sure what the polarity was and began to manually charge the battery. I charged the battery up to 3V and then checked it 2 hours later. The battery was still at 3V so I took it up to 3.5V. I thought this was going to be the answer but apparently not. Still has the same symptoms described below and shows no signs of life. I think I'm going to have to call this unit FUBAR and wait until I can afford a new one
Update 3: I have tried a few more things to no avail but I figured I'd list them here. Since I charged the battery manually the battery has not discharged by more than .3V. So my problem doesn't seem to be a power issue. I have now tried to use a rapid charger and plugging in the USB cable to see if I could make the computer recognize the PB. That didn't work so I removed the mother board and carefully cleaned and dried it using alcohol and a blow drier. That also didn't work. Apparently I'm the only person to ever have this problem happen and even Blackberry themselves are at a loss as to what could be wrong. So I guess I have a shiny paper weight with a good charger for my 9810 and a new BB USB cable. I can't complain after spending $20 on it but I am really disappointed as I was really hopeful that I would finally be the proud owner of a Playbook.
Update 4: As a complete "why not" effort I bought a dock charger for $15 and am trying to stack charge with it but after a few days it still hasn't done anything.

Have you checked the power button on the top. I did see a post where the button was stuck in the down position and the PlayBook would not start. Eventually the poster fiddled with the button using something small until the button popped up again.

  • Hi guys I'm really in need of some help. I have an IMac I3 for a while now I've been having a problem of my machine refusing it shut down , it goes to a blue screen with a spinning wheel but doesn't shut down.  And now won't boot from install DvD

Please some one help me ...
    A) my mac won't shut down with external HD connected (if it's been used)
    B) there are disk permissions that can't be fixed SUID stuff ..
    C) I have now verified the Mac HD and it tells me it's corrupt in bold red writing and to start up from install DVD
    D) it won't boot from DVD so I cannot run the repair , initially the machine was spitting it out on start up , now it appears to be attempting to boot off DVD , well it sounds like it is .... BUT it's hanging with the Mac Logo and a wheel ... For um .... 30min now...
    E) weirdly when OSX is booted off the hard drive , it won't recognise the Install DvD or the applications one... It just spits them out....
I had an old PPC 17" and it was a beaut .... Never had a single problem with it ...
I bought this one December 2010 and it's been nothing but issues for a computer in excess of £1000 I'm extremely disappointed ... And weirdly the shutting down issue started when it was a week out of warrantee ... I feel conned and am almost at the point of throwing it at a wall and buying a PC

Ok so I've done what you said and this is what it's come back ....
I don't know that these are the errors , but they're the things which don't look right ...
    Throughout the shut down there is a recurring line ;
    It says ;
    Com.apple.launchd 1 0x100600e70.anonymous.unmount 301 PID still valid
    Then there are 2 more which I think are related ;
Com.apple.securityd 29 PID job has I overstayed its welcome , forcing removal.
Then the same with fseventd 48 and diskarbitrationd 13
Oh and on Launchd1 : System : stray anonymous job at shut down : PID 301 PPID13 PGID 13 unmount...
Then the last process says "about to call: reboot (RB_AUTOBOOT).
    Continuing...
    And stops ...
Hope this means something to you ... Thanks again for your help so far :-)

  • FileMaker Server problem on Mac Mini Server - Mac Mini won't boot

I just installed a brand new Mac Mini Server today, and also FileMaker Server 11. A first-timer for both Mac OS X Server and FileMaker Server, I made an error as explained below, and right now I don't know how to get back on track with the system. It won't boot.
    So, how did this happen?
At first everything was proceeding according to plan. I configured the pre-installed Mac OS X Server on the Mac Mini with users, groups and services. This was tested from clients and this seemed to work just fine. Then I installed and configured FileMaker Server. This was also tested from a client, and the example database that came with FMS was served up just fine.
The problem arose when I tried to install my existing FileMaker databases. I simply checked to see where in the file system the example database was located, and then copied my old databases to that location (I think it was Library > FileMaker Server > Data > Databases or something close to it - can't check it now...). I had the FileMaker Server Admin Console running, and hit the Refresh button hoping that this would make FileMaker Server find the databases.
This was my first error. I should have read ahead in the instructions to see that one is supposed to use an Upload Database assistant instead...
What happened when I hit refresh was that the FileMaker Server Admin Console became completely unresponsive with a spinning ball as cursor. I left it for about an hour hoping it would terminate, but gave up and tried to shut it down. It wouldn't close, so I force quit it from the Finder. Then I tried to shut down FileMaker Server, but I needed to force quit this as well. After this I thought it would be best to reboot the Mac Mini, so I shut it down, but now it won't even boot, it just stays on the screen with the spinning wheel for ever!
I have tried all the keyboard options while booting, but nothing seems to help. In safe mode, the grey progress bar just grows to about one third, then disappears and leaves the eternally spinning wheel.
The server version of the Mac Mini doesn't have an optical drive, only two internal hard drives. I tried to reinstall from scratch using the optical drive on another Mac on the network. The startup disk appeared when I tried to boot the Mac Mini holding down the option key, and after about 20 minutes or so of the spinning wheel I could actually access the discs. I started by running Disk Utility to check disk permissions. There were a lot of repairs concerning permissions and groups, especially on "Library". It said "ACL differs on Library", I don't know what this is but this was repaired. I then ran Repair Disk. The volume appeared to be OK.
When I tried to reinstall Mac OS X Server however, this failed with the message
"You can't upgrade this version of Mac OS X because a newer version is installed. Mac OS X Server couldn't be installed on this disk." I don't know how this can be, but I may have run software update earlier today.
What should I try next? Should I erase the primary HD and try to install again? Or should I install the system software on the secondary HD? Or should I just try to reboot as is in the hope that the disk permission repairs did the trick...?
Any helpful pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Hello there, I came across your post when browsing the forum for passive advice. I am in the same boat as you and am a first timer for both of these tools. I work for a company who now needs to expand its network and database capabilities. I have been assigned this task and these are the tools i have opted for. I have not yet purchased them and i am pleased to find someone who has my desired setup. Could you please advise on the simplicity of the setup and whether an advanced knowledge is required.
I want to use it in a mixed operating system environment. Is this possible?
    Regards

  • Problem with HP Media Centre M7670.UK-a - won't boot after installing an update to Apple Quicktime

I just installed the latest update to Apple Quicktime (after an update message appeared on the screen). When asked if I wanted to re-boot the PC now, I clicked on Yes.
Now the computer won't boot. The power light comes on, then the disk drive light flashes for a moment, then nothing else happens and the PC starts to beep. The beeps are repeating, with 2 short beeps and one long beep. What do the beeps mean?
    This question was solved.

Then a  clear CMOS would be the next logical troubleshooting step.
Here is  a link to your motherboard specifications.
The information on clearing CMOS is at the bottom of the document.
This is usually the last step before giving up on a motherboard.
The problem you are facing is motherboard hardware firmware related.

  • Another 10.4.7 problem: Won't boot up, won't repair disk

Seems I'm not the only one experiencing problems with the 10.4.7 update, but I haven't found a post about my specific problem.
I had some of the already mentioned problems, like an overall slow system and applications (Mail) not starting up. I did the first restart after the update, and my iMac booted normally. Then when I noticed those problems I attempted another reboot, and since then it won't get past the "Starting Mac OS X..." loading window with the blue progress bar.
Now, I already tried a disk permissions repair before the reboot, which froze up. I then started disk utility from the OSX DVD and tried a disk repair, which failed: "Macintosh HD could not be repaired after 3 attempts" with the "Underlying task reported an error". I read in the support documents on this page where it said I should use fsck instead, so I booted Single User Mode and tried fsck, but it gave the same error.
I also tried an "Archive and Install" which gave me something like "Install not possible at this time, please try again".
The safe mode won't boot either, it just freezes at the grey spinning wheel and the grey apple logo.
Unfortunately I don't have a backup, so I am pretty much confined to somehow fixing my existing installation, or doing an archive and install.
So, any suggestions on how I can boot up again?

Did you update your backup first and then check the hard drive for any directory problems with Disk First Aid repair via Disk Utility when booted from your Tiger install disc before installing the 10.4.7 update?
If not, sounds like the hard drive had some directory problems which can go unnoticed prior to installing a major OS update such as 10.4.7 but will be brought to the surface by installing the update.
If there is a hard drive directory problem that cannot be successfully repaired by DFA repair, the problem is substantial and your options are as follows:
Use a more substantial repair utility such as Disk Warrior which is highly regarded/recommended for OS X with no guarantee but DW has been known to work miracles.
Using the Tiger install package that shipped with your Mac, reformat the hard drive HFS+ (or extended) with Journaling enabled (which erases the hard drive) and re-install Tiger and all 3rd party applications and then restore all data from your backup.

  • Mountain Lion won't boot after restart (SSD problem?)

Hey, I just installed ML on my OCZ Octane SSD, everything went ok, finally the setup assistant requested reboot which is what I did. However, it got stuck while rebooting and now I can only see flashing question mark icon and ML won't boot at all. The only thing I can do is to boot up in safe mode. I guess that the problem is my SSD (indilinx controller) which ML can't handle (it ran on Lion just fine). Does anyone have the same experience? Any clue how to resolve this? Thank you.

I've confirmed with OCZ that there is a firmware issue with Mountain Lion and they are working on a fix as of July 31, 2012.
No word from them yet, other than the official statement.
I too had an issue with my Octane booting once after install, then never booting again. Had to to a TM restore, back on Lion till this is resolved. Kind of frustrating, but there must have been a low level system change that affected things.

  • I have a RAM problem,, my Mavericks won't boot

My 2009 iMac desktop won't boot up. It starts to, but once the apple icon appears, it shuts down after about 20 seconds.  Sometimes, instead of shutting down, it sends out alarm bursts in sets of 3 beeps at a time.  Obviously I have no start-up disk for Mavericks, but I do have my old Snow Leopard disk.  What can I do to restore it?  I already removed the RAM, shot some compressed air over the cards and into the slots to clean out the dust but I still have the same problem.

Your RAM is failing or you might be able to clean it using a soft cloth.

  • Ongoing System Freezing problems, won't Boot from CD, HELP!

Three weeks ago, my system started freezing after about 20 minutes of use --completely stuck while not running anything more taxing than internet browser-- and then the infamous fans kick on and the thing sounds like its going to take off. I eliminate possible conflicts w/ peripherals with no improvement, back up my files and trot 100+ miles to the nearest Genius (which is questionable). They diagnose it as the power supply/logic board issue, replace both --the second time that they have been replaced-- and send me back home, smiling blissfully.
Until I plug it in, and it does the same thing. I live with it for a week, then load it back up for another 200+ mile roundtrip back to the same Genius, who keeps it for a week, claims that he has run every test known to Apple and can't find anything wrong. His suggestion: new surge protector. So I make the 3rd trip to go pick it up, buy the heavy duty super charged surge protector, plug everything up, and ..... you guessed it. Same ol' same ol'.
So torn between crying and cursing, I get on the phone and call apple support. After close to two hours on hold in the Que (I could have drove to the Apple Store in less time) in which I speak to a live person who transfers me to another who cuts me off as soon as they pick up the phone and I have to get back in the que to repeat the exercise in patience, I get a hold of someone that says, well it might be hardware or it might be software-- try running the hardware test first and if that doesn't give you an error, reformat your hard drive, reload the OS, and then your software and see if that doesn't fix it.
So now, I really am about to cry... but I suck it up and start to do the deed. Except.... I can't get the hardware test or anything else to boot from the CD. I try my disk, I try my son's disk. Nada. Zip. Won't boot at all from the CD. One disk says "hold down the C key," one says "D key." Doesn't matter, neither works. It will restart but forget the CD.
Here's the help part: what next? Is this an indication that its a software problem? Is there something else I can do? Or am I doomed to make another 200+ round trip to the Genius Bar? Frankly, I think I'm ready to drive in the other direction to the next closest Apple Store, but...
I'm so tired and frustrated!! Out of the last 14 days, this <edited by host> has been in the service department for 9 days and I've logged 700+/- miles trying to get it fixed. Between the lost time cost, gas and repairs (the $800 for the most recent repair and the $1000+ the first time around that thankfully were on Apple), I could have bought a top of the line new Mac and still had $$$ left over for a nice dinner!
    PLEASE! Any suggestions?!

    Hi Stellaadora-
A call to Customer Relations at 1-800-767-2775 may be useful. Be firm yet polite and explain the situation and have them open up a case number. This is not Apple Service, but more like the overseers. It may also be useful to research the Consumer Protection Laws in your state. Three attempts to repair it in MA and you get a new machine.
My guess is that they will have you try someone else. I know I would.
Certainly the store is not duplicating your 20 minutes of web-browsing. It could be something to do with networking. Have you tried disconnecting from the internet and doing something else for a while to see if it still locks up?
    Luck-

  • MSI 975x Powerup Edition and ocz2p800r22gk won't boot problem

    Hi Everyone,
I just recently purchased the MSI 975x Powerup Edition v2.1 mb with an e6600 and when I put in the ocz ram the system won't boot the fans startup for a couple of seconds then the system shuts down and then it starts up again. I have been reading the posts and I have updated the bios to 7.1 I also made sure the boot block was written so the whole bios was updated but it just won't boot with this ram. The only way I can make the system boot is with my old Kingmax ddr2 553 ram from my old system. The ram does work in the old system just not the new one.
Other than getting the new ram to work the system has been fine. I know some people are using ocz with the board if you can tell me how you got it to work it would be greatly appreciated.
    Take care,
    Bob

The problem is 100% the OCZ ram.  I had a gigabyte DQ6 motherboard along with an E6600 and OCZ Platinum ram.  It did exactly the same as you describe with the MSI board.  The only way I got it to boot was to buy some cheap DDR2-533 ram to get it to post and then up the voltage on the ram and change the memory settings.  The problem was that when put into dual channel mode or single channel and put under stress (virus scan, play music and compress a file) the system would crash.
Inevitably I returned the motherboard and the memory and got the MSI 975X with Corsair C5 memory.  I am now running stably with no issues.
I'm afraid OCZ has big time compatability issues.  They even stated that they can't check compatability with most motherboards on their support forum.  I would stick with the real big boys of memory being Corsair and Crucial.

  • Very BIG problem with my powerbook G4, won't boot!

    Hi nice people here,
This is the most serious problem I have for my powerbook G4 1.67GHz...
When I turn it on, it has the start up sound as usual.
However, the apple logo is not on the display, in fact, i doubt the display is not even turned on because it's all black and no light.
Also, the keyboard is not working either, the numlock and capslock are both not lit up when I push them.
Also I notice that the USB is not powered either, because I have a USB cooling pad and it was usually turned on as the computer is turn on. Now it's not turning on so I think the USB plug is not powered either.
I have tried reseting the Power Management, doesn't help.
I have a weird idea, maybe the computer was turned on as usual, but because the screen is not on, the keyboard is not on, and the usb is not on, so it feels like it won't boot?
The powerbook was fine before this happened....
Anyone has any clue about this? I will be very grateful if you can help...
    Thanks a lot!!

I think it's time for an appointment at a Genius Bar. The only other thing I might try is to put in your original OS install DVD and see if it will boot off there, but it does sound like there might be a hardware issue.
