XP x64 Xi-Fi WDM driver from Microsoft Update -- any good?

I'm putting together a Windows XP x64 edition computer for use in a MAME cabinet.
I'm using an SSD for fast booting.
I currently have an X-Fi XtremeGamer with no drivers installed.
I don't want to load my system up with Creative bloatware.
Is there any reason I *shouldn't* just use the X-Fi WDM driver offered by Microsoft Update?
Are there any known issues with it?

Drivers from Windows Update are vendor drivers, specially packed for distribution via WU. So this is regular Creative driver. It likely come without any control apps, so no bloatware, full API support, but also no manually activated effects like CMSS3D, Crystalizer and so on.

  • IE10 fails to install through WSUS distribution but fine from Microsoft update

Distributing IE10 through WSUS 3 fails to install on nearly every Windows 7 64bit machine in our environment when logged in with use rights. The first error in the IE10 log is:
00:54.093: ERROR:   WMI query for Hotfixes timed out. Query string: 'Select HotFixID from Win32_QuickFixEngineering WHERE HotFixID="KB2729094"'  Error: 0x00040004 (262148). We also get 00:55.359: INFO:    Setup exit

If I choose to check online from Windows update (logged in with user rights) it installs absolutely fine. If I log in as an Admin and try and install it from WSUS it also installs fine.
KB2729094 is already installed on the computers and is approved in WSUS.
I can see nothing useful in the windows update log. Any ideas? Thanks.

    Hi
Thanks. Sadly I already tried this, and using the Windows Update Readiness Tool. All of the prereq's are listed as installed and are approved in WSUS. I was wandering if there was something funny going on with the Neutral Pack but that doesn't seem to actually
be something that exists to be imported into WSUS.

  • Intel 3000 Graphics driver from windows update failing to install. Error 800F0244

Hi all, So an update has come through windows update for my embedded graphics which is an Intel HD 3000. Problem is the update keeps failing. Tried restarting and nothing changed. I ended up jumping on to the Windows Forums and seems like this problem has just started to pop up for quite alot of users and no solution yet. This is what the windows website says for the Error : SPAPI_E_SIGNATURE_OSATTRIBUTE_MISMATCH0x800F0244 The software was tested for compliance with Windows Logo requirements on a different version of Windows, and may not be compatible with this version. So was wondering if anyone else had this problem and if anyone found a solution?

Hi Everyone , So after a few minutes of digging around this is what I found. This is the driver version that is failing for intel HD 3000. ( 9.17.10.4229 )     So I thought I'd check the driver on the Intel site, to see if it was the latest, which it was .. (9.17.10.4229)    And this is the driver currently installed for my HD 3000... and as noted its  ( 9.17.10.4229 )   SO its seems this problm is a windows update issue and the most current driver is available through intels website. No need to stress, jump onto the intel downloads page and download the latest one if you havent already, This is a link to the  32Bit Driver https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/24970/Intel-HD-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-8-1-32bit  Heres the link for the 64Bit https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/24971/Intel-HD-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-64-bit As for the windows update one, hide that update as clearly something isnt right and surely MS will patch it soon enough! Hoped this helped

  • Dreamweaver Training from Adobe. Any Good?

I've been doing HTML coding since 1995. Starting out with
Notepad and then Homesite and moved to Dreamweaver as soon as it
came out. I'm using MX2004 right now.
I know quite a bit about DW and use it quite a lot. But I'm
still kind of "old school" about many of it's features. In fact,
I'm more comfortable working with the code to get things to turn
    out the way I want.
I just got a big contract to do a new website for a client
and I want to use many of the "newer" features like Templates etc,
and I'm looking for the best way to train with these areas. Adobe
sells a complete training sereis on DVD for $199. Has anyone tried
it? Is it worth the money?
I'm pretty sure that Dreamweaver will do vastly more than I'm
using it for at present. So an overall training approach, but not
for total beginners sounds best to me.
    Thanks for the help

  • Unable to switch from Windows Update to Microsoft Update

On a new Windows 7 64 bit computer I am unable to access Microsoft updates. Windows update works fine, but when I click the link to get updates for other Microsoft Products it will only take me to the screen that tells me to use the start menu to check for
updates. I have also tried other links to Microsoft Update from other Microsoft webpages and end up with the same result.
I have Office 2013 Standard installed and activated, and from previous installation experience know that I should be able to access numerous updates through this method.
To verify that I am able to install updates for Office I manually downloaded and installed one Office 2013 update through the Microsoft download site.
How do I get this machine to switch to Microsoft Update?

    Hi,
According to your description, I think you may had a misunderstand between these two updates installation. Here is a paragraph which talking about Use Windows Update to Check for Updates to other Microsoft Products:
By default, Windows Update can download and install updates for Windows 7 and features that are part of the operating system (such as Internet Explorer). You can also merge the functionality of Microsoft Update—a service for managing updates to Microsoft
Office and several other Microsoft products—into Windows Update so that you no longer need to visit Office Online to get updates.
If you do not already have Windows Update integrated with Microsoft Update, you will see the message “Get updates for other Microsoft products” on the Windows Update home page. To enable checking for other products, click the Find Out More option shown beside
this message. This will take you to the Microsoft Update site for some quick installation steps. You only need to do this once. Thereafter, the Windows Update home page will indicate that you receive updates “For Windows and other products from Microsoft Update.”

  • Is there any "contraindication" about installing every updates from Windows Update (and Intel drivers)?

    Hello!
The question is in the title.
I decided to reinstall Windows 7 on my MacBook Air using Boot Camp and I'm trying to play a video game which is quite laggy. I downloaded and installed the lastest driver for HD Graphics 4000 and my computer didn't explode. Can I also download all the optional updates with Windows Update, including the ones concerning drivers? I read somewhere that we shouldn't install other drivers than the ones on the Boot Camp x.x Support Software installer... Is it true?
    Thanks!

    Peter,
From what I read, I thought Internet based clients always download from Microsoft Windows Update first?
"New in System Center 2012 Configuration Manager, when you have a software update point that is configured to accept connections from the Internet, Configuration Manager Internet-based clients on the Internet always scan against
this software update point, to determine which software updates are required.
However, when these clients are on the Internet, they first try to download the software updates from Microsoft Update, rather than from an Internet-based distribution point. Only if this fails, will they then try to download the required software updates from
an Internet-based distribution point. Clients that are not configured for Internet-based client management never try to download the software updates from Microsoft Update, but always use Configuration Manager distribution points."

We have uninstalled and reinstalled the SUP but the problem still persist, SCCM2012 keeps configuring the WSUS to talk to the upstream server, this resulted in we are unable to get the latest Endpoint definition updates to distribute to client computers.
    Please advise, thank you

It sounds that you've been in the WSUS console before and configured it that way, but I'm only guessing here. In your case I'd uninstall the SUP and then remove the WSUS role from the server. Re-add the WSUS role and only perform the initial configuration.
Then install the SUP again and configure it from the ConfigMgr console only.

  • Poor Firefox performance after applying recent Microsoft Updates (Win 7 x64); any solutions?

Recently I updated to Firefox 27 and noticed really horrible performance (Task Manager shows FF pegging one core, frequent "Firefox is not responding messages", even lagging keystrokes in the URL bar). This is on an Ideapad s205 (AMD E450 APU, Win 7 x64, 8GB RAM, SSD) that has always had pretty decent web browsing performance for a low-end machine.
Initially I blamed FF because the poor performance coincided with the update to version 27, but now I believe the root cause to be a recent Microsoft update. The reason for that is that my wife has a laptop with an even lower-end APU (C60 APU, 5400rpm hard drive, 4GB RAM, Win 7 x64), and she was getting much better performance with FF27 until I applied a backlog of some 90+ updates. Now she's suffering from the same poor performance I am and she's pretty p*ssed at me.
Interestingly, I have two WIn 7 x64 Intel desktops that also have FF 27 and are fully patched, and the performance is just fine. Perhaps this problem is specific to AMD APUs.
Any thoughts? I've tried turning off the Azure backend per some comments in this forum, but that made little or no difference.
    Thanks!

Hi guigs2, I'm not sure what to expect for cache values. Mine are:
    * browser.cache.disk.capacity;256000 (default)
    * browser.cache.disk.smart_size.enabled;true (default)
    * browser.cache.disk.smart_size_cached_value;358400 ("user set" but I think this was computed automatically)

  • I can't seem to remove a driver from a driver pack

As weird as it may sound this is what happens to me.
    I use Config Mgr 2012, SP1.
I'm currently OSD'ing 6-7 different type of machines, one of those is the Lenovo T520.
I went to Lenovos site and picked up their drivers for this model for Windows 7 x64.
It aborted though during the task sequence, after downloading and applying windows, halfway through installing the driver pack
that I assigned for the model.
    Error:
    Windowsfailed to start.
    A recenthardwareofsoftwarechangemightbethecause.
    File:ifM63x64.sys
    Status:0xc0000098
Info:Windowsfailed to loada requiredfileBecauseis missingor corrupt.
a bit of googling told me that several other people have had issues with this driver..
"Intel Ethernet FCoE Virtual Storport Miniport Driver Version 1.14.12.0"
The sites I checked seemed to have 100% succes rate by simply removing this specific driver from the package.
They also stated its not an essential driver.
So I completely deleted the driver from config mgr, and of course updated my driver package to the distribution point.
Then got the same error during task sequence
Thought that was pretty weird, to get an error on a driver that was now supposedly non existent..
So I googled some more and saw that some had issues with the driver pack did not actually update even though it said it did.
they fixed this by completely removing it and making a new one.
    So I did the following:
    1: Deleted the driver Pack
2: Went to the directory and made sure the driver pack had no files left on the server.
3: I created a brand new Driver Pack, I added all the drivers, without the previously deleted 'FCoE Virtual Storport miniport Driver'
4: I make sure the task sequence uses the correct new Driver Pack
And I still get the error. This is where I'm lost.. why am I still getting this error? the driver doesn't exist in SCCM anymore, and I even made a new package

    How about this:
Delete the driver package and delete the folder that got created during the creating the driver package
Re-import the drivers for the model, make sure the FCoE driver isn't included in the source
Re-create driver package, distribute it to DPs
Apply Driver Package -step in TS, make sure it uses the new package and it's filtered with WMI (SELECT * FROM Win32_ComputerSystem WHERE Model LIKE '%TS520%' or something that works...)

  • Commands to copy apps to local drive from networkshare and installing via unattend install

    Hi Everyone,
I'm in the process of deploying and testing Windows 8.1 with different settings via unattended answer file. I would like to test out with another settings during unattended install but I'm having a hard time to implement it. Here is the scenario, I've a
server named WDS-DEP-SERV with a hard drive portioned into 2. One is C and other is E. On my E drive, I've a bunch of .exe apps saved. I would like my unattended answer file to pull those .exe apps over to the local drive from network share and install them
as the unattended install takes place. I'm looking for a command that can help me achieve it in a silent mode. During testing before, I was able to have my unattended file to pull VMware tools drivers from network share under RunSynchronousCommand parameter
with domain credentials of the network share and it installed successfully. For example, like this below.
    \\WDS-DEP-SERV\E\Distribution\Drivers\setup64.exe /s /v "/qn REBOOT=ReallySuppress" /l C:\Windows\Temp\vmware_tools_install.log
I was searching online and came across a lot of things but none answered what I'm looking for. Can someone please reply back with the answers on how can I implement it in my unattended file.
    1) To be able to have unattended file pulling drivers from network share, copy them over to local drive during unattended installation process and execute them silently. I need a command to pull this off.
    2) What pass should I use in unattended file?
    3) So far, I've used RunSynchronouscommand  under Windows Deployement Neutral during "Specialize" pass to install just VMware tools. Is there a way to execute all apps in one go instead of doing it one at a time via Synchronouscommand? Please
correct me if I'm wrong, Is it true every time you use Synchronouscommands for various different apps or scripts to pull from network share, you'll have to use network credentials under each and every Synchronouscommands section. Like, if I add 4 SyncrhonousCommands
to the unattended file to pull 4 different apps or scripts from network share, I must provide network share credentials for each of those. Can it be just one time network share credentials under those and they all get pulled and executed during unattended
    install?
Again, please if someone can get back to help me out. I would really appreciate it. Hope to hear from someone soon. Below is my unattended answer file in case someone would like to see it to understand better.

  • Satellite U200-115 - CD Rom error - can't activate the drive from windows

    Hi everyone,
I'm having some problems with my DVD rewriter drive on my Satellite U200-115.
It works very intermittently and whenever I power up the machine, the first notice I get is 'cd-rom error' even though there is no disc in the drive.
I can't activate the drive from windows either (icon in system tray).
There is the odd occassion when the drive does work in windows but this is so infrequent that I can't remember the last time (I think it was back in Nov 08).
I want to restore the system as I am getting a lot of windows file icons instead of the proper icons for images e.g. pdf, doc, etc. but am worried that the drive wont read the disc or will stop working during the recovery process.
Any ideas would be gratefully received.
    Best WIshes
    Nick

If its a software issue the drive will not stop working during the recovery procedure.
Do you get a CD-ROM error in Windows?
You could try to boot from a Linux boot disk. If this work it would be a software problem and not a hardware problem.
Maybe this article from the Microsoft Knowledge Base can help you:

  • Officejet Pro 8620 won't print from microsoft or thunderbird

I have installed the printer drivers for my new OfficeJet Pro 8620 and am not able to print from Microsoft Word or Thunderbird.  I can print from Google Chrome.
I am running Windows 7 and have already reinstalled the printer software several times.

    Hello @dmcairns,
I understand that you're having printing issues with MS Word and Thunderbird on your Windows 7 computer when printing to your HP Officejet Pro 8620 e-All-in-One Printer. I would like to assist you today with resolving this issue. Now you mentioned that you have already uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times to no avail. I do believe that because you can print from certain programs on your computer that you are experiencing a driver conflict with those two programs. To resolve this issue, can I please have you run through the steps below.
I am going to have you load an alternate driver on your printer. This will not cause you to lose any functionality at all. You will not notice any difference in the performance of your printer or the capabilities. The only thing that should change, is the fact that your printer will be able to print from every program!
    Step 1: Clear Temp files:
    Click on your Start menu
In the 'search programs and files' box located right above Start when you click on it, type %temp% and hit enter
When the Temp folder opens, select Ctrl + A at the same time. Everything in this folder will now highlight.
Select 'delete' on your keyboard. No actual files or folders on your computer will be affected by deleting the Temp files as they are just temporary internet files. Should a file still be used by a program on your computer than you will automatically get the pop up to 'skip' the file.
Once the Temp folder is emptied, close the folder
Right click on your Recycling Bin on your desktop and select Empty Recycling Bin
    Step 2: Download Alternate Driver:
Please click here to download the alternate Officejet driver package
Once the website opens, select the Download button
    Allow the download to Run
Once the download is complete, an extraction will automatically occur and then the installation will pop open. Close any installation window that opens.
    Step 3: Add Alternate Driver:
    Click on your Start menu
In the 'search programs and files' box type %temp% and hit enter
When the Temp folder opens you will see a folder that starts with 7z.... Click on that folder to open it
Scroll through this folder and ensure that it has files that start with OJ860 files in it. You do not want to see OJ862 files. Once you verify that you're in the right folder with the OJ860 files in it, look at the top of this folder and you will see the file path. It should show something like 'local disk C - Users - Username - AppData - Local - Temp - 7z. . . .  Left click on the right hand side of this file path bar and everything will highlight. Right click on the highlighted file path and Copy it.
    Close the Temp folder
    Click on your Start menu
    Select Devices and Printers
Right click on your HP Officejet 8620 and left click on Printer Properties
    Select the Advanced tab
Select 'New Driver' and hit 'next' until you see a list of Manufacturers on the left and a list of Printers on the right.
Select Have Disk on the bottom right. An 'Install from disk' window will pop open. Right click on the file path bar and Paste in the file path we previously copied.
    Select OK
Select the HP Officejet 8600 and hit next
When you're brought back to the Printer Properties window, select Apply but don't hit OK
Click the General tab and rename your printer back to Officejet 8620
    Select OK
Please try to print from a few different programs to verify that everything is printing properly now.
Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support Forums. I wish you luck!

  • Format an external drive from mac to pc

How do I format an external drive (My Passport) from mac to pc (iOS Snow Leopard) without losing my data?

    kwnola wrote:
How do I format an external drive (My Passport) from mac to pc (iOS Snow Leopard) without losing my data?
1: Remove the data off the drive
You can do this by installing MacDrive on the Windows PC to access the Mac HTFS+ format
Or you can use a Mac to remove the data.
2: Format the drive on the PC (preferably) by right clicking on the drive and choosing format
A: If data on the drive will have larger than 4GB sized files, then the format you want is exFAT
(if your using Windows XP, you can download exFAT from Microsoft)
B: If the data on the drive will always have less than 4GB sized files, then you should choose FAT32 for most compatibility with all other machines.
3: If you can only format the drive on the Mac then open Apple's Disk Utility in the Utilities folder
Select the drive on the far left, it should have the makers name and a size, then click Partition.
Now select the box and click Options: MBR  Then select Format: exFAT or MSDOS (FAT32) and click Apply.
4: If any chance you need to secure delete any data remaining on the drive form being recovered, use the Erase with Zero (or 7x for very secure) before formatting.
Note: Formatting a drive on the PC there will be a option for NTFS, this is for access by Windows only, but software can be installed on the Mac to read/write this format.
