XPS M1210 vs. MacBook 2.16

Hi, I am really undecided on which Laptop I should buy. I basically need my laptop for college, i will be studying engineering (and I have read on the net that Engineering programs need to run on windows).
The two choices are the Dell XPS M1210, and MacBook 2.16GHz White.
They are both great systems, and i do not care much about the OS, since im starting to dislike windows.
The Specs are:
XPS M1210
- Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7400 Processor (2.16GHz,667MHz,4MB L2 cache)
- Windows Vista
- 12.1' screen
- RAM 1024MB 533MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x512]
- 120 Gb Hard Drive
- Intel® Media Accelerator 950 Graphics Up to 256MB shared graphics memory
- 6 cell Lithium-Ion Battery (53 Whr)
MacBook
- Intel Core 2 Duo at 2,16GHz
- OS: Tiger (to be later upgraded to Leopard)
- 13' screen
- RAM 1GB 667 DDR2 - 2x512MB SO-DIMMs
- 120Gb Hard Drive
They both are great systems, i think. But I am really undecided. The price is more or less the same, I only need to decide. I know you guys all have a Macs, but what do you think is better, or rather, what would you choose, or what do you suggest i should buy according to my needs (rememeber that I will take engineering)?
I'd appriciate if many people could advice me.
Thank You to all.

O.K. This is what I can tell you from personal experience. My sister in law purchased the xps model you are looking at about 6 months ago before she left for college. After an experience with Dell that would take me an entire post to describe (would rather do time in a Turkish prison), she cancelled the order and purchased the xps through sam's club. Same computer she wanted but about $300 cheaper. Anyway, I really don't know where to begin with the issues she has had. The thing always drops her internet connection which lasts for several days. Wireless or ethernet, doesn't matter. She has had the blue screen of death several times. I usually get a call at least once a month asking me how to fix whatever that problem of the month is. I got to play with it a little last month, and design definitely is no mac. She got the integrated web cam and the resolution is HORRIBLE compared to isight. She has lost numerous photos due to crashes. The list goes on and on....and battery life seems to be quite poor. If it was me, even if you need windows which you probably will, Macbook all the way!! For the price of the XPS, you can get the macbook, download bootcamp for free, install a version of windows, and be dollars ahead. I run bootcamp on my imac and switching the os really is not that time consuming. Let's be honest here. You will use the computer for more than just strictly school. Photos, music, video, etc. Most people at college their computer is their life. Use windows for what you have to and osx for everything else. After using the 1210 for about 30 mins, I was longing for my macbook. There is no comparison whatsoever. I used to use pc's until about 2 years ago and I have never looked back. Windows runs entirely native under bootcamp and performance will be the same on either one. You just get so much more with the mac. I hope this helps. And by the way, the people in these forums are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. They have been a tremendous help to me since I switched. Best of luck!

  • Dell XPS m1210 or Macbook?

I currently just bought an xps m1210, which is fully loaded...However, I was recently drawn to the macbook (the base one configuration) The macbook however, is not fully loaded as much as I would like it to be, for as much as I can afford.
Please help me decide which one and why. I know I am posting this on the mac forum, but I just want to basically hear why the mac is better than my Dell. I went to the apple store, but the hardware on the mac was lacking...
    Thanks

I have now fully switched from PC's to Mac. I have been an unwavering supporter of Dell for the last 8 years. I have had 9 Dell computers in that time. My most recent computer, an XPS 400 with 2.8Ghz Dual Core, 2 gigs of ram, 250 gig hdd, nVidia 6800, this that and the other thing...that computer now sits on someone elses desk, as I sold it and bought a MacBook. I have had nothing but problems with my last 3 Dell computers and I am fed up with their lack of customer service. Buying into the XPS level of service seemed to make things worse. I had just the same amount of waiting on hold as I did with my regular Dell computers. AND, I got to talk to the same foreign tech people whos solution to every problem is reinstall windows and call us back. With this computer I had to have the motherboard replaced, the monitor replaced, and had an issue with the entire computer freaking out. My 2 previous Dell computers were laptops. Those both had optical drive failures...one had a memory slot die, and on the other the hard drive died. The quality of Dell computers has fallen considerably in the last 2 or 3 years, and customer service has been horrendous. I used to recommend to anyone who asked me to buy a Dell...no questions...My Inspiron 8200 lasted me for 4 years with no problems. It took me awhile to get over the fact that computer was built by a much different company than it is today.
    That rant aside...
Any computer is a complex set of components. It is inherant that something can and will go wrong at any time. However, that said, I believe that Apple is still by far probably the best manufacturer of computer equipment. The customer service is outstanding. You actually get to talk to an American who speaks fluent english when you call Applecare. You will not get that from Dell. OSX is a far superior operating system than ANYTHING else you will find. If you have to run windows for something, dual boot it...I think you will find the more you use OSX, the less you will use windows. The MacBook is not as fully loaded as the XPS? The XPS STARTS at $1200...the MacBook, at $1099...The MacBook has a faster processor and comes with OSX...The XPS is identical in specs, other than the extra Ram...is that worth the extra money? Buy extra Ram for the MacBook. The XPS is probably a good computer. But its pricey. You pay a premium for the XPS name, and I can tell you from experience it is NOT worth it. If you want better hardware than what the MacBook offers, then get the PRO. The graphics card in the Pro is better than the one in the XPS. It may not seem like it on paper, but that "Turbo Cache" does nothing but use system memory for the vid card, just like the intel 950 does. The real memory size for the 7400 vid card is 64 MB. It can use 192 MB of system memory for the vid card. Get the basic PRO and you get a true 128 MB vid card.
It all depends on what YOU want/need. Not what we do. But if you do buy the Mac...I know you wont be sorry

  • Graphics Card in Macbook????

I am plannig to buy a Macbook but the only reason i am thinking twice is that it doesnt have a dedicated graphics card. I am a gamer and need a good GPU for my games.
On the other hand I have the option to buy Dell XPS M1210 whch is gr8 but then its not a Mac.
Mac is cool but no GPU....
Tell me if its possible to get a GPU from apple into the macbook coz the intel chip is soldered into the mainboard.
i dont want macbookpro coz its too bulky and costly.

    Hi Pappe,
    Welcome to apple forum.
Keep in mind if you have a lot of game on PC platform, you might consider to go with Dell.
You can run the game on Macbook or macbook pro but you have to install the XP (another thing to buy) using boot camp.
But as previous reply said, macbook is not upgradeable GPU and the only option is macbook pro.
    Good Luck.
ps: dell also comes with standard intel GMA, if you custom it with 256MB NVIDIA® GeForceTM Go 7400 with TurboCache4 Graphics Card, you might ended with the same cost as MacBook Pro minus the built in camera, microphone, and blue tooth.

  • 950 GMA Graphics

I've got a Macbook with a Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz processor, 1GB of RAM(memory) and Intel 950 GMA graphics.
Visit http://intel.com/products/chipsets/gma950/index.htm and you'll see that the 950 GMA supports up to 224MB of video memory.
Apple uses the same hardware, but over here the 950 GMA displays only 64MB(+16MB) of video memory. On Windows XP this somehow goes upto 128MB but still not 224MB. My question is simple, how do I get the max out of the 950GMA?
Before posting this question, I did some research and confirmed that the 950 GMA supports 224MB of video memory by using a Dell XPS M1210 with the same config as my Macbook. Games run very well(much better than on the Macbook even though the hardware is all the same).
I raised this question because the only reason I want a Macbook Pro is because of the 950 GMA on the Macbook not performing as well as on the Dell Notebook. If I am assured that Apple is going to release a patch in the future to fix this issue, I wont make any decisions in haste.
    Thanks,
    Abhishek

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Apple has not released such a patch, and made no announcements that it would. But if you want to, I'd suggest posting to the macbook feedback page asking that they do:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbook.html
As for whether they'll do so in the future, please read the terms of use. No discussion of unannounced products is allowed.

  • WHY MAC???

I have been a PC guy but am now looking at a new laptop and a friend had suggested a Mac. Every Apple person I know always raved about the product. So I have narrowed it down to two machines. The Dell XPS M1210 or the MacBook. I use my computer for work (office, acrobat, & internet) plus movies, photo's, and travel a lot with it. I don't play games.
    After spending the better part of a day reading the posts on here I am wondering why buy a Mac. It seems that common problems for the MacBook are;
    - random shutdowns/reboots,
    - numerous battery issues,
    - CD's/DVD's not playing and/or being scratched by the drive,
    - CD's/DVD's getting stuck in the drive,
    - The proclaimed ability to run windows does not seem to be as flawless as portrayed
    - Several websites not being able to be opened,
    - But the one that got me is the numerous complaints about Apple service, with common replies of "impact damage" or "software problems not coverd by AppleCare" and requiring moeny to fix.
From what I have read it does not live up to the reputation of Apple being a superior integrated product with fantastic support. In other words not much different from PC.
So I ask everyone out there, because I was quite keen to switch to Mac, why buy a Mac?? How is better than a PC??
    Thanks,

Well I guess I understand your point.... But think about this when you go to a hospital all you see is people who are sick or having problems with a health concern in their life. When you come to the discussion all you will have is people with problems trying to get them solved. Nobody comes in here to chat about how great their laptop is, they come here to share common problems. I have been a Windows user all my life. I never had any interest for macs until recently we put my HP Pavilion to the test versus a Ibook Pro. We did 3 hours of audio recording. I was so asahmed of my HP because it froze 6 times in 3 hours and when we put the ibook it did everything perfect. The next day I sold it and just a week ago I got my mac, infact im on it right now. This machine is absolutely amazing. The widescreen feature is mind boggling! Its a bright little screen that blows your mind. I got the mac with the 2.0 ghz Intel Core Duo processor and with the basic 512 mb ram. THIS THING IS QUICK!! It came with the DVD burner superdrive and its great. The OS X is real simple and very effective for what ever you neeed it. I thought I would take longer than a week to learn this system, but I already got it down. Other things like the bluetooth, allows you to transfer info between computers or cell phones without any wires. Battery timE! WOOO HOOO! Easy 5 hours on doing basic stuff and about 3 hours and 30 minutes playing a dvd or doing many things at once. I can have 15 pages of Safari(Internet Browser) open and the laptop will still be as fast as when they were closed. Ever heard of no virus, no spyware, no pop-ups? LOL i did not believe it either but now I get to surf the internet pop-up free with no risk of viruses or spyware attaching to my computer. You like to travel right. This computer has a very sleek design and is very light 5.? pounds. Pictures? The macbook has a built in camera called Isight it takes incredible pictures and also it is great for video chatting or video conferencing it comes with software for picture editing(cant think of te name) I thik its Iphoto. Ill tell you one thing about changing to a new system(you will expereince this). When you change to a new system for example from windows to mac. When something you dont have the knowledge of goes wrong, people have the tendency of blaming the machine immediatley without any doubts. This happened to me. This is my first mac ever and when the internet was not working properly, I immediatley blamed the mac for it, without realizing that my router was the one messing up. I bought office 2004 for mac and it is completely different to the windows software it is more stylish and better designed. Of course if you have problems adapting to mac, Mac offers a software called parallels for mac. This program allows you to run and install windows on your mac and run it parralel to OSX. Of course when you use windows you get all them dirty things on the internet that mess up your computer. This has been the best investment in my whole life. I am going to stick to mac until I die. LOL. Take it into consideration that im a college student studying to become a physical therapist. So I have to have a machine that I can rely on and that it will not fail me. Regrets? NO WAY! There is no such thing as perfect techonolgy in this world. But I can tell you that the Macbook comes real close to it.Anything you purchase in this world can come defective there is no guarantee on anything. But to me its the MAC OSX that makes this machine stand out. The security, the simplicty. The mac is very user friendly. I give it two thumbs up and recommend it to all!
    I hope this Helps GLI77
If there is anything else I can help you with. Please let me know!

  • Photoshop cs3 crashes when trying to open any file

When I purchased CS3 Web Premium it took several months of tooling around to get it to install on Vista HP. Photoshop cs3 worked fine for a few months after installation. It now refuses to open any files - just goes to an eternal spinning icon. When I try to shut it down, it just says not responding. I reinstalled once (takes hours) and it worked for an afternoon. Next morning back to not opening files.
Macine is dell xps M1210, 2Gb Ram, Core 2 T5600 processor, NVIDIA Go 7400 64Mb card.
    Help.

    Problem (hopefully) solved!
file>open has always been available, but when i select a file and open it is when it hangs. Hitting esc then has no effect.
Tried the reset preferences - still no change.
A friend suggested delete all network printers and voila - it worked! Still keeping fingers and toes crossed every time I use pshop, a little annoying that I have to send files to another machine to print (fortunately I rarely need to print files), and input devices hard to use with everything crossed.
    Thanks for suggestions Dave.

  • ITunes freezes whenever I try to open it

I installed the latest version of iTunes (7.3.1) and QuickTime. According to Apple Software Update, both of these programs are up-to-date. However, iTunes freezes when I try to listen to my music library by clicking on a song. I have already uninstalled and installed iTunes & QuickTime several times to no avail. Is anyone experiencing the same problem as I am?
    Any suggestions?

Solved my own problem by dumping all of the newly imported files in the trash and emptying the trash. Twas a case of overload it seems.

  • Can I sync my iPod to new Vista laptop without loosing all my tunes?

When I attached my i-pod to my new laptop, I got the "sync'ed to another computer message. Is there a way to import my tunes library (drag & drop?) Import from an external drive? I have tried both and the new iTunes does not seem to find the old music files.
Thanks in advance for any advice,
    DELL XPS M1210   Windows Vista

Yes, it can be done. Vista is set up differently. XP was set up as "Administrator" and "My Music". Vista has taken away the "My" and uses "Owner", etc. Anyway, if by connecting your iPod to the new computer it completely synced it and your iPod is empty...there really is no easy way to get it back other than starting over. If iTunes lists your music but says it can't be found...all you need to do is reassociate every song with the new path. For example: C:/Users/Owner/Music and then whatever folder you may have it in.
    Hope this helps some?

  • IPhone causes Windows XP to crash when connected

Connecting the usb adapter from the PC to the iPhone causes a blue screen of death (BSOD).
Originally, I connected the iPhone to my Dell XPS m1210 and iTunes 7.3 to activate. Activation was seamless. It immediately recognized the iPhone and didn't cause any problems.
After activation, I disconnected the iPhone. When I reconnected it (literally plugged in the cable), my Dell started to recognize the device. Then it went directly to a BSOD. The BSOD doesn't contain the name of any file. Microsoft error reporting says the file is corrupted, so it can't analyze the problem. The problem happens again and again.
Since then, I have restarted my computer a few times, reinstalled iTunes twice, updated my usb drivers, all without any success.
Has anyone else experienced the problem? Anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?
    Dell XPS M1210   Windows XP

    The BSOD reports:
    Stop: 0x0000007E (and stuff here)
Let's try getting a minidump to the Apple Engineers for a look.
To set up your machine to capture a minidump, right click on "My Computer", select "Properties", select the "Advanced" tab, select the "Startup and Recovery" Settings button, select "small memory dump" from the popup. When it crashes, look for the MiniDump file. It's usually in the folder "C:\WINDOWS\Minidump" and is called something like Mini<number>-<number>.dmp.
Generate the crash, collect the minidump, and send it as an attachment to this email address
in the email to Roy, be sure to include the following information:
    - A link to the thread on Apple Discussions where the issue is being discussed
    - The username you are using in the thread
    - The version of iTunes you are using or trying to use
    - the version of Windows you are using (mention service packs)
    - A concise description of the issue you are seeing
    - The exact text of the error message you are seeing

  • Blue Screen when iPhone is pluged in

I have a Dell XPS M1210 with 2 gig ram. Have been using 30-gig ipod for a year with no issues. bought iphone, installed 7.3 itunes, plugged in the iphone and regestered it without any problems. plugged it in the next day and now I get the "blue screen of death? on my laptop loaded with XP-Pro. The ipod doesn't crash the system when plugged it... but the iphone does...
    Anyone have any ideas?
I did wipe the system and reinstalled everything, but still have the same problem...
    thanks,
    -Frank

    A few things to check.
The issue may be related to having photos stored on the iPhone that were taken with the iPhone. When the photos attempt to sync with the computer, the computer presents a blue screen error message.
Do you have webcam software installed? Specifically Logitech QuickCam software. If so, update to the latest drivers for your webcam.
Do you have a digital camera you use, or a media reader connected to the machine? If so, see if you can find out what software launches when the camera is connected, or the card reader has a card inserted. Make sure this software is up to date.
    Hope this helps!

  • Quicktime corrupted for iPad 2 videos - no hand cursor controls

I have a 32-bit Dell XPS M1210 laptop and a 64-bit Dell XPS 435 desktop - both of which have had hard drives recently formatted and authentic Win 7 SP1 installed. Not much on either but IE8, Office 2003, HP Printers, Live Mesh, Avast, Google Earth and a few insignificant programs which are not common to both machines. Neither had ever had Quicktime installed until today since I just started rebuilding both. Wanted to watch the iPad 2 videos just posted. Downloaded current Quicktime, installation flawless.
Quicktime will not run properly on either machine. Same exact corruption problem on both despite 64 vs. 32 bit etc. The videos play, the black centered controls for Pause, volume etc. are there, however I cannot use them. Cursor blinks to a hand for a split second as I hover over controls, but then changes back to Arrow pointer and is not clickable anywhere on video. So, I can watch the video but can't pause, rewind etc. - no controls.
I have an old Dell XPS-410 Windows Prof. XP SP3 with Quicktime 7.69.80.9 which runs the videos perfectly, pauses controls etc.
Since the only thing in common with these two machines where Quicktime is corrupted is Win 7, I suspect problem may be centered there? I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling. If I go find OLD quicktime clips online which have the simple gray control bar at the bottom, they do work to pause etc. AFTER the clip finishes downloading.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Ruth

The ipad is certainly no replacement for a computer/laptop.
It is used in conjunction with a laptop/computer. It is simply a big ipod/iphone.
I would not even consider the ipad for your needs.

  • Adobe Premiere playback hangs in Windows 7 (But worked in XP on same machine w/  half as much ram?)

    Problem description:
Ever since I upgraded to Windows 7 on my m1210, I've been having major  problems with Adobe Premiere Pro CS4.  When I'm editing a video, I'm  unable to play the video in the timeline - or in the program at all.  High definition video plays fine with regular programs, but when the  same file is run in Premiere, the audio plays, but the picture doesn't  advance - or when it does it freezes on a single frame, waits 20  seconds, and then shows off another glorious single frame.
This is odd, because the computer exceeds the requirements to run  Premiere, and what's more - it worked fine under windows XP with LESS  ram.   I don't understand what's going on here.
Attempted fixes: Tried to make sure both cores were recognized by  win7 (Apparently they are) Bought more RAM (upgraded from 2 to 4gigs)  Bought faster HD.
None of these things have made a difference.  I still wonder if only one  core is being recognized by the program but both show up under the  device manager, and when I use CPUID.
Recent changes: I installed a faster hard drive (Which was my  attempt to help solve the problem, as faster HD=good for video editing)  and reinstalled Windows 7. Didn't change the results.
Operating system:Windows 7 32bit Ultimate Edition. (Thinking about installing 64 to see if it makes a difference.)
    System specs:
    Dell XPS m1210
Intel Core Duo T5600 1.83 (essentially 2.5 with both cores)
    4G Ram
    120gb 7200rpm HD
    GeForce 7400Go

  • Mac Mini and IMac intergration

I'm preparing a presentation for my bosses who dislike having to basically halt production on other projects when exporting the print ready files of one in Indesign. (you can't package one file in indesign and work on another)
A idea i had was to find a way to take a mac mini backup and interface it so i could use my Dell XPS m1210 laptop or 17 In Imac as just the monitor.
any way i can link another computer with the Mini and just use the monitor?

    NekoLLX wrote:
    Does that make sense?
    Not really
But I think I know what you're getting at...I just answered a similar question in another post...If you're just doing this occasionally you could use Apple Remote Desktop (or a free VNC client) to control your mini's "screen". Basically on your mini go to the Sharing control panel and turn on the Apple Remote Desktop service. Then click Access Privileges button and turn on "VNC viewers may control screen with password" and assign a non-trivial password.
now on your PC or another Mac download a free VNC client. (I use the Apple Remote Desktop app ($500) so am not familiar with free clients but I hear "Chicken Of The VNC" mentioned alot) and use client to connect to mini...
If it works then you should be able to start up the mini w/out a monitor (headless) and then connect to it using VNC. you may have issues with finding mini, however, if your network/subnet changes. Maybe Bonjour will help?!?

  • Anyone running Audition on Asus UL20 or UL30?

    Hi folks,
apologies if this is a newbie q thats already answered, could not locate this in discussions or forums (btw, seems weird to have two separate areas called discussions and forums..). Also, I've posted before but for some reason I could log into adobe (it knew my name) but had to create a new screenname.
So I'm using the oldie CS3 on my Dell XPS M1210 which is ancient but a great workhorse - I occasionally mix/burn CD's in Audition and its quite stable and good enough for an old laptop with a 7200 rpm drive.
I'm debating getting a new, but light laptop with good battery life - I'm worried that some of the ultra low voltage ULV type laptops would be too slow or have issues running audition, are there folks who have experience with this? I searched forums high and low and reviews but couldn't find much info
    My top picks are
    1) Asus UL20 - this is the 12", very portable! 1.3Ghz intel SU7300 duo 4Gb DDR2, 5400 rpm drive (weak). Needs external DVD drive. 7 hr battery
    2) Asus UL30 - 13", 1.3Ghz intel SU7300 duo, 4GB DDR3, 5400 rpm drive but has option to switch to nvidia gpu. Needs external DVD drive.  12 hr battery!
    3) thinkpad x201 - get the 12" top of the line with 130GB SSD and it would be sweet but much pricier. Amazingly light but quite ugly imo. But CS would be screaming fast on this.
I love (1) for portablity and would go with this if audition performance isn't much worse than my Dell m1210.
Are there folks out there running CS on these UL laptops? Would love to hear your input. Thanks

I would love to see a full report.
I've always loved Thinkpads and lately downmarket Lenovo's as my workhorse machines. It's how audio of any sort works with the OS - is it Win7 64-bit? - that is the question.
In testing much lower quality machines, one a Lenovo G550, with external usb audio, I've found two main issues. The first, much more serious, only applies to the Acer AMD-based machine and usb1 audio interfaces, but both machines have a problem with slight audio dropouts or glitches when running Windows 7 audio with the wireless networking enabled. The AMD-based machine was fine running XP or even Vista, but glitches on both 32 and 64-bit Win 7 with wi-fi.
The Lenovo was running "Mint" Linux when I got it and I don't remember any glitching, but did no serious tests and installed no external cards. With the on-board audio under Win 7 it seems OK, but with any usb interface I have, the wifi has to be off for serious audio.
In discussions on the Microsoft technical forums, it appears that there is general acceptance that where usb and audio devices share unchangeable interrupts, the wireless has to be off for audio. This only seems to have become set in stone since Win 7 and seems to me to be ridiculous and completely unacceptable.
Incidentally, both these current generation machines of mine exhibit my old bete-noire of play 1kHz tone through the internal sound and speakers, turn the volume up to a loudish but not unreasonable level and the tone plays with huge gaps. Turn the volume down and it becomes OK. (NB beware of trying this for long periods, I had two mainboard failures in the past that might have been related to the test).
Please don't read this as negative. There are workarounds even on my cheap machines, but I would genuinely like to know if similar events take place on better laptops.
