Xraid not mounting

I have read some thread about this issue, but not real answer, so I would like to ask again if anyone has an answer for the raid not mounting. Every light are green on the raid, installed the new admin 1.5.1. everything look great nice and green, but the raid does not mount, actually the raid appears after an hour or 2 after booting and I can play the media store on the raid fine, but additionally to the mounting problem, I cannot write anything to the drive. I check the permission, it says read only, but everything is greyed out and I cannot change it to read and write.
I am running a G5 Intel quad. OS X10.5.2.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I hace the same problem as you.
Did you get resolve it?
My Xserve can not mount XRaid RAID. Dont' appear in diskutil !!!
Thanks

  • XRAID will not mount (journal corruption)

Hi guys, I have seen in the unanswered archived article below someone with exactly my problems, really looking for a solution to repair the journal within OS X, any ideas or developments on this?
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=374802
    [QUOTED HERE FOR CONVENIANCE]
Our XServe-RAID volume does not mount anymore.
On /var/log/system.log I could find the following.
Feb 22 09:52:29 ogre kernel: jnl: open: journal magic is bad (0xf433f != 0x4a4e4c78)
Feb 22 09:52:29 ogre kernel: hfs: early jnl init: failed to open/create the journal (retval 0).
It appears the the journaling is badly screwed.
I tryed to disable the journaling with no success.
    Here is what I get.
    ogre:/var/log root# diskutil disablejournal disk2s3
The selected journaling request does not appear to be valid
After some googling I foud this :
    --- QUOTE ---
The more serious problem occurs when the contents of the journal file are corrupted in such a way that the operating system does not proceed to mount the volume. Fortunately, this problem is extremely rare (I have seen three reports of corrupted journal files at the MacFixIt Forums and Apple Discussion Forums since journaling was introduced).
Starting the journaling process is one of the first things that happens when a volume is recognized by the operating system. There appears to be no way to intervene in single-user mode before the journal file is examined. A message about bad journal magic appears. Unfortunately, every tool that can turn off journaling requires that the volume already be mounted.
If the Macintosh can boot under Mac OS 9, dealing with a corrupted journal file involves restarting under Mac OS 9 and using a utility (such as our free TechTool Lite 3.0.4) to make visible these two invisible files at the root level of the volume:
    /.journal
    /.journalinfoblock
Once these files are made visible, they can be deleted. Mac OS 9 does not support journaling, and recognizes nothing special about these files. Neither of these files can be seen in Terminal or in single-user mode in Mac OS X, because they are considered part of the disk directory.
If the Macintosh cannot boot under Mac OS 9, but the drive has Mac OS 9 drivers installed, the drive can be put into a Macintosh that can boot under Mac OS 9, or an ATA/IDE drive can be put into a suitable FireWire enclosure.
The possibility that you may need to remove these two journaling files under Mac OS 9 is a good reason for making sure that all volumes you use have Mac OS 9 drivers installed. The drivers must be installed when the drive is formatted.
    --- [END] QUOTE ---
Well, my disk is part of a RAID 5 matrix.... so the solution proposed does not work.
Does any one of you has any idea ?
    [/QUOTE]

I was using RAID mirroring two SCSI drives under 10.3 Server (not an XRAID) and found that one of the two drives was slow to spin up. The System considered the array "degraded" and made the single "good" drive available. Nothing that made any sense to me could get the "slow" drive repaired or re-incorporated into the pair. I could not split the pair for repair, and even after it was spun up and ready, Disk utility refused to repair it or its acceptable partner.
What I eventually did, with some coaching from the forums and re-reading of Mac Help, was to delete the errant drive from the set. Then I could erase it as a single drive, and add it back into the set as a "new" replacement drive. The system accepted it as a replacement, and brought it up-to-date with its partner automatically.
I have got to say that I find this approach completely counter-intuitive. It gives me the creeps to delete the "safety-net" drive, even if I know it is mucked up.
But perhaps a similar approach would work in your situation.

  • Xraid Volumes not mounting

Our Xserve will not mount a raid volume. If the Fiber connection is pplugged into another xserve the mounts appear. On the problem xserve the volumes do not even appear in the disk utility. Any ideas on how to find them would be greatly appreciated. I do not think the Fiber card is bad due to the fact that the Xraid admin says the link is up.

It'll only take a few minutes to try swapping the fibre cards, and if the problem goes away, or when you open up the problem box you see the card not seated right you'd be done.

  • Volumes not mounting

I've got two xserver XSAN controllers, one XRAID array,
and an emulex FC switch. The servers, xraid, and FC switch
are connected on a private ethernet network, 192.168.1.x.
I'm trying to get the volumes defined in the SAN mounted on
both servers. The SAN volumes mount on one server but not
the other. I'm running 10.4 and the just recently released
    XSAN version.
On xserver 1 the SAN is visible (via SAN admin) and the volumes mount on the desktop. Everything is happy.
On xserver 2 I can see the san, and both servers show
up in the clients/participants list. I can see the volumes defined
in the SAN listed in the SAN components window. However
I can't mount the volumes defined in the SAN. Both the xservers
are defined as controllers, with xserver 2 defined as the medium
    priority failover.
I'm seeing these error messages in /var/log/system.log ("Video" and "Outside" are the volume names) on xserver 2:

Any ideas? Shouldn't I be seeing other messages attempting contact with the other controller?

I'm not sure about your emulex FC switch, because I use Qlogic, but for the rest of it, I know I can comment.
In my previous attempts to make volumes mount I found it was usually due to either bad DNS (improper name of machine) and/or bad network connection (metadata network connections not working either due to bad cable, or bad NIC or bad switch port).
Check the name of the machine, whether it resolves properly, and also check your IP networks (if you're using two, or just metadata).
    I hope that helps.

  • Oddball client not mounting XSan Volumes

Background: My client, a TV News broadcast station, had Apple and a third-party design and install a Apple based XSan storage and network. They ran all new fiber and gigabit ethernet to each station to use the XSan. It has been working great, with the exception noted below.
Setup: 2 MD Controllers, 1 XServe, 4 XRaids, each make up two 2 large TB volumes (raid 5, stripped together).
XServe, XRAID, MD controllers, and all clients are all connected together on a Fibre and Fiber Optic network using QLogic switches. SUBNET: 10.200.1.x.
Ethernet Network, also connected all the above together on HP Gigabit Switches. SUBNET: 10.100.1.x The public WAN is made available on this subnet by a connection to the HP switches. Still getting details on how this was done.
Everything is running OS X 10.4.8 or better, XSan File System 1.4.
    Setup
There are 8 workstations (edit bays) that act as infusion and editing stations. Each station has two XSans volumes mounted NEWS01 and NEWS02. They have the odd numbered bays use NEWS01 and the even numbered bays use NEW02.
    PROBLEM
All bays mount the XSan volumes, except one. FCP08 will not mount the XSan volumes. We have rebooted the workstation, and even went to the extreme of shutting down the entire setup all bays and MD controllers, File Servers, etc.. then bringing everything backup up. Same problem.
Based on some forum discussion, we have tried the following:
    * Ensured that there is no empty mount point in /Volumes
    * Uninstalled all XSan Software and resinstalled v1.4 from Apple's website.
    * Removed the client from the XSan Admin, and readded it, made sure to enter valid serial number, etc..
    * Verified that all fibers are working, all link lights look good, and you can ping across the MD network.
When you use the XSan admin from either FCP08 (edit bay 08) or from the server, and you add both MD XSans to it, you see the client, and you click on the client and click either Mount (read-only) or Mount (Read/write).
It will show "Mounting..." and then it will flip back to "not mounted". The only feedback we have received so far is "ACCESS DENIED". All affinity setting are set to rwxrwxrwx (wide open), and all the volumes and workstation logins all have the same access to the volumes. I can not find any restrictive permissions anywhere.
I plan on trying to move them away from a /etc/hosts type setup to a proper DNS Server running on their XServe using the DNS Server function of OS X Server. But currently all edit bay stations have the same /etc/hosts file installed, which accounts for MD and ethernet networks.
ANY IDEAS what is wrong with this workstation? With the setup?
I have had extreme ideas from some who have said that we need to blitz the entire client, and reinstall the operating system. I am not willing to go down that route, since each edit bay was built manually without an image (another aspect I will remedying soon). It will take sometime to rebuild this edit bay client if I that is the only solution.
The only this question I have if that is the popular opinion, is what is different from a client OS install and the existing one regarding the XSan? This are edit bays, not private workstations, and no one installs any extra software or surfs the net, etc.. They are used for ingest and editing only.
    HELP!
      Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Hi,
You could check if it is Fibre Channel related:
    from a terminal do a cvlabel -l
this should give you a list of the lun's in your volume.
When this tool does not show luns, you might have a zoning issue.

  • Client will not mount SAN after upgrade to 10.4.8 Server

Living life on the bleeding edge, I loaded the 10.4.8 Server upgrade onto my G4 Xserve which is the MDC for my single Xraid SAN. The SAN started without a hitch, however, the volume would not mount on the client side. The MDC shows up in the client list and the mount buttons are active, but the SAN will not mount. The system log yields the following error:
Can not mount filesystem, cvfs error 'Invalid argument' (0xb) while initializing local portmapper
I checked the obvioius: /volume is clear of old links, running cvfsck showed no problems, and cvadmin stat looks ok and who shows the MDC as FSM and ADM.
Has anybody else run into this? Any observations would be welcomed!
    Thanks,
    babcom

As indicated on the tag line, Xsan 1.4. Upgrade from OS 10.4.7. SAN created using version 1.4. SAN mounted just fine under 10.4.7. In an attempt to isolate the problem, I tried mounting the SAN from the command line:
    mount -t acfs iplVol1.cfg /Volumes
only to received the same invalid argument error. I suspect that a parameter name has been changed/deleted/munged when parsing the volume's cfg file. Since Apple did NOT reference the invalid string token in the error message, I can not be sure. I am just now getting back to work the issue.

  • Volume will NOT mount

We have much the same issue as others here in other threads have spoken about - after a reboot a raid volume will not mount.
Disk Utility can 'see' the drive and array, but will not mount it. RAID Admin reports no problems. I tried updating the firmware to no avail.
Then I tried a new FC card in the server, a different controller card in the xRAID, different cables and connecting the FC cable to a different XServe. No mount with any of these attempts.
    XServe 2 ea 2.3Ghz G5, 2GB RAM, 1 80GB drive (cluster node config)
    OSX Server 10.3.9
    7 ea 180GB drives, RAID5; 1 TB array
RAID Admin 1.5 (controller firmware - now: 1.5/1.50f)
Any ideas what to try next? And no we don't have 100% backups, close but no... ;-( so any ideas worth trying appreciated!
    Tks, Mark

    Mark,
We recently had a similar problem. We have an XServe RAID fully populated -- split into 2 volumes. One volume would mount the other would not (after a reboot). Tried swapping fibre channel cables, re-seating fibre channel cards, etc. Our solution was replacing the PCI-Fibre card in the XServe.
Another thing we have had happen is, after reboot, one volume mounts and the other mounts about 15 mins later -- after completing fsck.
    Hope this helps.

  • External Hard drive will not mount on desktop

I have a 17" Powerbook G4 that has replaced a broken iBook G4. I've been using a Western Digital MyBook Pro Edition as a secondary drive for my multimedia as well as my iTunes Library. It worked fine on the old iBook.
When I plug it into the Powerbook, using either USB2 or Firewire 800, it will not mount to the desktop. It DOES however appear in the System Profiler as "External HD Button and Lights". The drive is formatted for FAT32 and works fine on my Windows XP desktop machine, so I know the drive functions mechanically. A different hard drive, a Maxtor mounts to the desktop fine using USB2, so it isn't a bus issue.
This is driving me nuts. I LOVE this computer, but I have WAY more invested in music than the cost of the computer.
    Thanks in advance.

No way around this. Your phone has to be restored using a computer running iTunes. Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.

  • Hard Drive not mounting on start up, or not mounting at all.

Recently, as some of you may know, I've had hard drive problems. I didn't get it fixed, but the problems came and went and I didn't have time to send it away.
But 2 weeks ago, before I went on holiday, I ran TechTool Deluxe which came with my 3 year Apple Care. It ran, found errors on the drive (something like -38 or -58 errors), so I started repair. It was after 7 hours that I held down the power button, because it just wasn't going anywhere. It had been on the same step and task for 7 hours and kept giving me every now and then the message of "Working...". But that screwed the drive more, as when I turn it on, I get the message stating to restart.
I'e tried getting at the files using this PowerBook and FireWire, using all the correct techniques, but the drive wouldnt even mount on here. Disk Utility could not mount it either.
The files, Im sure, are ok as TechTool gave me a number of the total files on the drive, which is correct. But I just cannot gain access to them.
    Please help, thanks,
    (it's a first gen iMac G5 btw)

  • Upgrade to Yosemite, iPhoto won't open and NTFS-3G could not mount error with new external HD

    Help!
I just did a software update to get OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 on my MacBook Pro.
Now iPhoto won't open and I get this error:
"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable....Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup."
So I do this and try to repair the database as suggested and I get another error:
"iPhoto will open as soon as the iPhoto library is available. Time Machine might be backing it up."
But it's not - no external hard drive is connected.
I'm terrified I can't get access to my photos (and I admit I haven't backed up with Time Machine for over a year - my mistake that I won't make again).
So I bought a brand new external hard drive (seagate for mac and pc, 2TB) so I could save only my photos to the hard drive (because I googled and read you can manually save your photos to disk by dragging and dropping the photo library onto the external hard drive).
But I can't even get the hard drive to work....I get this error
    "NTFS-3G could not mount /dev/disk2s1
at /Volumes/Seagate Backup Plus Drive because the following problem occurred:
/Library/Filesystems/fusefs.fs/Support/fusefs.kext failed to load - (libkern/kext) link error; check the system/kernel logs for errors or try kextutil(8).
the MacFUSE file system is not available (71)"
I google the issue again and it says to uninstall NTFS-3G but I actually think I just deleted it a long ago without uninstalling it properly??  I don't know....
    (a)  how do i fix iphoto
    (b)  how do i get external hard drives to work with this OS (I've read lots of posts and don't really understand the advice)
    (c)  how do i get all my photos onto the hard drive safely so I can import them onto a PC
Any assistance would be magic for this little lady!

    (c)  how do i get all my photos onto the hard drive safely so I can import them onto a PC
First see if you can reformat the EHD to MS-DOS FAT with Disk Utility.  If you can
open iPhoto and select all of the Events in the Events mode. Use the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option and export to the EHD with these settings:
Select the destination for the export to be the EHD or a folder on the EHD.  This process will create a folder for each Event in your library with the same name as the Event and contain the original image files.  The EHD will be useable by a PC and the photos will be available also.

  • My Ipod 4th Gen will not mount into Itunes

Please anyone with technical knowledge HELP ME.
The basic problem is that my 4th Generation Ipod will not mount into Itunes.
Let me tell you what I have done so far this includes all the R's, I have also followed the advice of reinstalling itunes and Quicktime I have also tried backwards installing to version 6 (at present I have upgraded to version 7.0.2). The ipod is visible in Windows and I still am able to use it as disk as I have programs I am using off it.
I have tried a fifth gen and also an Ipod mini and both mount onto my Itunes.
I have tried to reinstall the Ipod software, however the previous ipod updates do not work and as the Ipod cannot be mounted I cannot use Itunes to update it as it is not visible.
I have also run the Ipod Diagnostic in Itunes and everything seems fine (I have included the report if anyone can please understand it)and at the very bottom it states that the Ipod is truly Mounted. WELL ITS NOT
I really am getting desperate now as this is the same on both my Desktop and Laptop and I am getting very close to throwing the whole thing out along with all the rest of my computer equipment.
    Thanks a lot

If anyone is interested I managed to solve this problem by reformatting the ipod as a mac ipod, with the help of friends system. This does get rid of the music but as I had it backed up wasn't a problem. I then plugged the mac Ipod back into a windows pc and reformatted it as a windows ipod which updated the firmware correctly and have'nt had a problem since.

  • How can I update my iPod classic that will not mount on iMac computer?

I can't update my iPod classic from my iTunes on my iMac computer with OSX 10.9.  It will not mount or be recognized by iTunes version 12.1.
I plug it into the USB port and it charges, gives the "Do not disconnect" symbol but the computer does not recognize or mount the iPod at all.  I haven't been able to update the music for years. I have four other devices associated with my Apple ID for automatic downloads. Is it too antiquated to upload any of my music from my computer to it anymore?

    Ahh! The plot thickens!
I went thru the console and read the error logs. It appears that the .ipsw file does load.....I think. It's been years since I spoke computer....
Here is what I got after double clicking the .ipsw file and iTunes opened:

  • After upgrading to Mountain Lion, my LaCie USB 3 drive will not mount

I just upgraded my OS to 10.8 and now my LaCie P'9230 USB 3.0 external drive will not mount. I have re-installed the USB driver and re-booted the computer and drive several times to no avail; any ideas/help?

It's my understanding that LaCie hasn't released a Mountain Lion driver for their PCIe card yet. Sonnet uses a modified version of the LaCie driver and theirs is dead in the water too for that reason-they also warn that their driver won't work with 10.7.5 when it's released.
Indeed, yesterday I pulled the Sonnet USB 3.0 card from my Mac Pro and replaced it with a CalDigit card from OWC; CalDigit has separate drivers for 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8 and I can say that the card works with all three, the first time in 1.5 years that I've had a reliable USB 3.0 connection.

  • Drives are not mounting to desktop on macbook pro.

External USB drives, SD cards and even DVD media is not mounting to desktop when connected.
This is a new problem for me and have not had this issue previously. I have successfully connected the same devices in the past.
They all show up in the disc utility as connected. I am unable to mount them from disc utility (this button is disabled) and they are not showing up in Finder either.
    Please help!

    Hi Paul,
Sorry for the late answer. I live in Europe, so that's why I was asleep ;-)
Basically the command tells your computer to unhide everything on your Desktop, so if you don't have a Desktop, something is definitely wrong.
My guess is that there's something wrong with your account on that computer. You can check that by creating a new account in System Preferences (click on Accounts, click the lock in the bottom-left corner and then click the "+" button just above).
Then try mounting "some" media and see if it appears on the new user's Desktop. If not, I would highly recommend to reinstall Mac OS X.
    HTH,
    Jasper.
