Xrefs to figure titles in linked FrameMaker files

In my FrameMaker structured documents, figure titles include both a number and text (for example, "Figure 3: Initial Collector Model"). But cross-references include only the figure number (for example, "as shown in Figure 3").
In my style mappings in RoboHelp, I selected <$paratext> as the RoboHelp style for Figure cross-references. My assumption was that RoboHelp would display the text of the paragraph being referenced. So while my FM document said "as shown in Figure 3", the RH topic would say "as shown in Initial Collector Model".
However, RH is displaying the text from the topic title instead of the figure title, which is, of course, very bad. I tried including the paragraph text in the FM cross-reference format (in addition to figure number), but that didn't make any difference.
Has anyone else seen this issue? Is there a solution?

That would probably work. In this case, we might do just as well avoiding cross-references to figure titles in topics that are going to be linked to RH. After all, if we were authoring in RH (without the luxury of automatically generated figure numbers), we'd just say "as shown in the following figure." But I'll keep the FM source tip in mind as I encounter other formatting issues.

  • How to number Figure Titles continously across book files

Currently in our book files, the Figure Titles restart at 1 in each book file. We would like them to number continously throughout the whole book, so that if there are 3 figures in chapter 1, the first figure in chapter 2 automatically starts at 4 (and if figures are added or deleted, the numbers update automatically when you generate the book).
Is this possible to do or are we forced to number our figures with a chapter preface (first chapter figures are 1.1, 1.2, etc., second chapter figures are 2.1, 2.2, etc.)

    It's very possible and easy.
    1. Assign a "series label" to the paragraph format that holds the autonumber
for your figures. I use "F:" for figures. For example, "F:Fig. <n+>.\sn" is
the autonumber format I use.  It gives a result such as "Fig. 3. " (I also
assign a bold character format to the autonumber format, to separate it from
    the caption text.)
    2. In the book file, select the files you want to be affected, right click
and choose "Numbering." On the Paragraph tab, set "Continue Numbering from
    Previous Paragraph in Book."
    3. Edit> Update Book to see the result.
    4. Done!
Series labels come in really handy. Some use separate series labels for
tables, photos, charts, etc., but that can become confusing to readers very
quickly. (Table 1 follows Plate 6?). It's easier and clearer to use a single
series label for all illustrative elements.

  • Changing Linked FrameMaker Document File Path

I have moved my FrameMaker document to a new directory. Can I update the file path to the document so that the files are updated correctly? I have checked the property settings for the linked project and it appears that I cannot change the file path. Is my only option to link to the file in the new directory and remove the existing project? If so, will that destroy my existing TOC?
    Thanks!

Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately, before posting my question this morning I tried the route you suggested and the result was repeated crashes and error messages. Here is what I did:
I removed the original linked FrameMaker file.
I restored the links to point to the new file.
This resulted in the aforementioned behavior.  I did not try updating the indvidual chapters  - the RoboHelp appplication kept flashing and crashing.
For the record, I am using the latest version of RoboHelp 8 and FrameMaker 9. They are both part of TCS 1.3.
I will try the update again and will let you know if it is successful. Thank you again for the suggestions.

  • File Link Framemaker option not available, plz assist...

    All-
(Also posted in RoboHelp HTML forum. Redoing in this forum since it seems topical.)
On my new Robhelp 8 HTML  installation, I can't see the File>Link>Framemaker option, just  File>Link>Word Document. Is there something I have to do to enable  the Framemaker option?
Interestingly, on another computer  with a trial copy of Robohelp 8, I DO see the Framemaker option. Not  sure why I shouldn't with the new install.
    Please assist.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi there
I think one of the issues at play here deals with security and Adobe protecting their assets. There are mechnasims in place that prevent a user from repeatedly installing a trial over and over and over, therefore having a never ending "free trial" period. And it would appear that this may be somewhat at play in an odd way when the trial has been installed and perhaps now you are installing the trial of TCS.
Just sort of thinking out loud.

  • File Link Framemaker Document option not appearing

Edition: Technical Communication Suite 2.5 (Framemaker 9.0.4 & RoboHelp HTML 8.0.2)
    Hi all,
One of our new tech writers recently installed the Technical Communication Suite v2.5. I was going to show her our process for linking a Framemaker document to a new project, but when she tried to link to a book the only option she saw was to link a Word document.
She used the same install CDs as the rest of our team, then fully upgraded to Framemaker 9.0.4, and RoboHelp 8.0.2. The rest of the team sees the Link > Framemaker Document option.
I have had her restart her computer after installation. Then uninstall Framemaker and Robohelp, and finally reinstall Framemaker and Robohelp. No luck. I have seen other forum topics where the FM Document option is unavailable (grayed out), but nothing about it not appearing at all.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

Did she have either FM9 or RH8 installed as point products? If so, you probably need to fully uninstall and then reinstall

  • LOCKED - Troubles with RH's transform of FM figure titles/tbl captions' formats... Same problem?

    Source agent:  FM 9.0p250, unstructured
    Transformative agent:  RH 8.0.2.208
    OS:  WinXP Pro V. 2002 SP3
    CPU:  Core2 Quad @ 2.4 GHz
    RAM:  3.25 GB
    Free Space:  12.6 GB
    File Sys.:  NTFS

Is anyone else experiencing problems with RH not correctly transforming FM figure and table titles? I can get most of my design to work, but I am having a problem with RH not following-through with some of my table title format and figure title format specifications.
I am having problems with RH not correctly applying, or inconsistently applying, figure title and table caption attributes ("Paragraph" settings) that I specify through Project Settings | Import | Edit | Conversion Settings.
For example (in FM Table Designer), I have a table title paragraph design, "TT.Table Title", in which I specify Title > Above Table, and specify a paragraph design (FM style) of Arial, 10pt, regular, bold, 0" indents, alignment left. It works fine direct to print or PDF; the same is true with figure titles.
In RH (through Project Settings | Import > Edit | Conversion Settings [FrameMaker Settings] > Paragraph), I specify that the FM style is to transform through an RH style that I define (through Edit Style button > Styles > Format > Paragraph). I set the alignment, etc., as is required through RH, but when I look at the Design view and/or generate the output (say...Webhelp), RH has not correctly interpreted one or more of my specification's attributes.
For example, in the case of my table titles, in Design view, RH has centered the title (or in RH terms, the ''Caption") above the table. Or sometimes the bold attribute is missing. In Project Manager, if I right-click and select View, the title/caption sometimes appears as specified; however, if I Generate the WebHelp (or HTML Help, or whatever), the bold formatting isn't there.
I thought that maybe RH defaulted figure and table titles to a Caption, as that is what it calls that part in the Design view. But when I set Caption to my specs, it made no difference.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance!

I may be off at a tangent here as this is a wild guess.
HTML recognises Table Heading and Table Text, RH does not recognise the Table Heading selector. Maybe with your knowledge of FM's table caption and that tidbit of information, you can change something in your FM table to avoid the problem, if indeed there is a link.

  • Trouble understanding RH customization when linking FM files

Is there a video that will help with this, particularly creating and customizing a single CSS for use with my work? I also would like to have an idea of the best workflow.
Here is what I am doing and some issues:
    Open RH.
Click File > New > Project.
What I really want is a bunch of HTML files with known filenames. I know FM 12 can do this without RH, but I want to work this out now so I can take this in a better direction. Anyway, I click Application Help in Project Type.
Click the Import tab in the New Project dialog box.
Select FrameMaker Documents as the Import Type, and click OK.
Select my FrameMaker .book file, and click Open.
Enter a title for the project, file name for the project (left default), and location for the project.
    Click Finish.
At this point, my multi-FM-file .book project hangs and never finishes. If I am using a single-FM-file .book project, though, the following happens:
    The Import dialog box opens.
In the FrameMaker Document area, click Edit. Some scanning happens, and the Conversion Settings dialog box opens.
    Edit paragraph settings.
Find those paragraphs I don't want output for and select the Exclude from output check box, such as Footer.
Set each of my four Bulletn styles to Multilevel list. Bullet1, Bullet2, Bullet3, and Bullet4 styles represent decreasing levels of subbulleted lists.
Set my eight Stepsn styles to Multilevel list. Steps1, Steps2, Steps3, and Steps4 styles represent decreasing levels of subnumbered lists (1, a, I, i). Each of these styles has a corresponding First style that sets the numbering to 1, such as Steps1First.
Set up cross reference settings to remove page numbers.
Set the default format for Image to .png.
Leave Character, and Other settings alone.
    Click OK and Next.
Leave the Table of Contents, Index, and Glossary Settings turned off.
Click Finish. Some scanning happens and a result is created.
    Some issues.
While Mutilevel Numbering creates 4 appropriate levels of bullets based on my styles, it only creates 3 of 4 levels of numbered lists. Levels 3 and 4 are presented identically by RH. How did this happen and how do I fix it.
Indented body tags are not correct. I can fix this in the CSS. But, then, how do I create and make sure my project uses a new CSS?
How do I create a delivery package for this? I see what I have in project manager, and want to create a folder that contains my output, that is, HTML, PNG, and CSS files that support my project so I can move these to the target CD or delivery mechanism?
I have HTML and CSS buried within individual folders with the respective FM source. How do I get these HTML files and images out, and mate them to one and only one CSS for delivery?
    Thoughts?
    Sean

Thanks. I will choose Blank Project  instead if Application from now on, though I understand that is erased by choosing FM files. I really just want compliant HTML 5 output with a single CSS file that I can deploy with linked files, which will be PNGs.
So, can you  help with my customization questions?
Also, another issue I have run into is spacing in the HTML around run-in headings. This is caused by RH adding an extra blank paragraph with a non-breaking space, as show in the following code. I don't need this empty paragraph added, and it was not in the FM source. Thoughts?
    <p class="FM_GlossaryTerm">Term Name Here as a runin in FrameMaker.</p>
<p class="FM_GlossaryTerm">&#160;</p>  //<-- This line added in RH conversion, and I don't want it.
    <p class="FM_GlossaryDefinition">Term definition paragraph here.</p>
    Cheers,
    Sean

  • Web Gallery- Make the Site Title a link

Not sure if this is common knowledge, so I figured I'd pass it along...
You can make the Site Title a link by entering the following:
    <a href="www.your-url.com">Your Site Title</a>

If I enter this ( Home ) into my collection title I end up with this
    ( <a href="../index.html">Home</a> ) in the group.xml file.
When I first enter the original text it appears as ( Home ) in the LR display, upper right corner. Once I save as preset or export the web gallery it then appears as
( Home ) in the LR display.
    What am I doing wrong?

  • How to get the Figure Title to appear below the graphic, not above

I have valid XML that I am importing into FrameMaker just for printing.
My <figure> element contains a <title> and a <graphic> element. The graphic comes in within an anchored frame, appearing after the figure title. The figure title needs to be below the graphic. How do I get this to work? I read a couple of threads that used tables to wrap the graphic & the title and to make the title appear below, but that was during an export function to XML, not an import. Short of editing the DTD, EDD & all of the XML data to have the graphic element structure come before the title within <figure>, how would this be accomplished? Thanks in advance.

You're saying the xrefid should go in the <title> instead of in <figure>, but where in what document do I point to that ID?
First, to cross-reference an element, the target element has to have an ID attribute. You do not have to expicitly put a value into that attribute. When you create the cross-reference in FrameMaker, you list the elements, select the title element, and select the particular instance of that element as the target. FrameMaker adds a value to the target ID attribute for you.
Second, FrameMaker basically treats every element as a paragraph unless the EDD specifically states that it is to have character formatting. When you create a cross-reference to an element, the TEXT of the element is the text of the first paragraph IN the element. In your case, the graphic element is the first paragraph inside the figure element; it has a phantom (blank) paragraph above the graphic to hold the graphic marker. Then the title element is the second paragraph in the figure element. So, when you reference the figure element, the text of the first paragraph inside it is blank.
Third, the same applies to autonumbering. If the cross-reference is to show the autonumber and you target the figure element, then the first paragraph in the figure is the graphic element which has that blank paragraph above it. Your EDD does not treat apply formatting, that is the autonumbering to the graphic element. Hence, the autonumbering does not display in the cross-reference. FrameMaker has no way to dig down into the figure element and extract autonumbering from its second child element. Thus, you need to target the title element itself.
Rereading your post, I may not be actually answering your questions, but maybe this will clear up a few things.
    In the EDD, I have:
    Element (Conatiner): title
    Text format rules
    1. If context is: {notfirst} < subfig
        Use paragraph format: subfigs
Else, if context is: {first} < subfig
        Use paragraph format: subfig
    2. If context is {only} < figure
        Use paragarph format: figuretitle
    Element (Container): figure
    Text format rules
        Element paragraph format: figure
    Element (CrossReference): xref
    Initial cross-reference format
    1. If context is: [type="figure"]
        Use cross-reference format: figure
You do not give an example of how you are using the subfig element. But there is a problem with the title element in a figure element. The context {only} < figure means "the only child element in the figure element". This will NEVER be satisfied because title is not the only element in figure; figure also has a graphic element. NOTE {only} means only ELEMENT NOT only TITLE element. This confused me when I started creating EDDs.
NOW, if I assume the subfig structure should be something like:
    <figure>
    <subfig><graphic/><title></subfig>
    <subfig><graphic/><title></subfig>
    <subfig><graphic/><title></subfig>
    </figure>
Then the context {first} < subfig is NEVER satisfied because title is NEVER the first element inside subfig but {notfirst} < subfig is always true, because title is never the first element inside subfig. Hence, all title elements inside subfig elements are tagged with the subfigs tag, never subfig.
I am thinking the contexts should be:
    subfig {first} < figure
    subfig {notfirst} < figure
Remember these are contexts for the title element. The first is a title element in the first subfig element in a figure element; and the second is a title in a subfig that is not the first element in a figure element.
    Figure 1-1. ABCD                     <-- figuretitle
    Figure 1-2. EFGH (Sheet 1)     <-- subfig
    Figure 1-2. EFGH (Sheet 2)     <-- subfigs
    Figure 1-2. EFGH (Sheet 3)     <-- subfigs
    For instructions A - D, see Figure 1-1. For instructions E - H, see Figure 1-2.
I am assuming you are manually entering Sheet 1, Sheet 2, etc in the title elements of each subfig element. It is not clear from your posts where the autonumber is displayed. Is it displayed in front of the title or above the graphic? If the title element carries the autonumbering, then you need to target the title element and not the figure element. If the autonumber is in that "blank" line above the graphic, then you can target the figure element because its first paragraph displays the autonumber.
I believe I have gone on way too much, but hope something in the above is the answer to your problem. See if any of this helps and then post again. Maybe we can get this figured out...pun intended.

  • FM9/Win - Changing linked image file?

I can do what I want to do in InDesign, QuarkXpress, and PageMaker, but for some reason this functionality appears to be absent in FrameMaker, which is utterly dain bramaged.
I have a placed image in multiple places in a FrameMaker document. The image is placed by reference, not embedded. I now want to link to a different graphic (annual updates).
Re-placing the image a zillion times is not an option, as the sizing and position is already set. I just want to change what FrameMaker is linking to.
For the life of me, I cannot find where or even if, I can do this.
The inelegant solution would be to simply move or rename the currently-linked-to file on the hard drive, and rename the new graphic to the same name as the old one. I do not like that option at all, as there are some instances in other documents that I still wish to link to the old image file.
Is FrameMaker's link handling really this clumsy and archaic? In the other applications I refer to above, I would either go to a links palette and change the destination or right-click on an image and relink it. In FrameMaker, the "Object Properties" dialog appears to only report the location of the referenced file, not allow you to change it.
    What gives?

    Dan,
To my knowledge, there is nothing in FrameMaker like there is in InDesign that allows you to relink an image directly, or even indirectly via a link list. I also have looked and not found anything. There is a link menu item somewhere but I have never figured out what it does.
There is a plugin by Bruce Foster that is used to archive a book or document and its linked image files and text insets. When you run it, the plugin COPIES the book file and ALL the files associated with it into another folder that you specify, and then readjusts all the links among these files to point to the copied files. It puts all graphics files into one subfolder and all text insets into another. So, once you get your book where you want it, with no future changes, run the archive, and then use the files and book in the archive folder to print or do whatever you need to do in the future.
The downside is that you have two sets of files to manage, but if the archived set is rarely or never edited or updated, then all is well.

    Hi Arianna...
What version of FM are you using?
When I do this in FM9 using a test file with the default DITA-Topic-FM structure application, it seems to be working fine. Have you modified the structure application or are you using a custom structure app? In general the default Save Map to PDF process should give you exactly what you see in the topic files.
If you close and reopen the topic file with the xref to the figure, is the xref still there in FM?
Note that in general you should be making a figure cross-ref to the fig element not the title element (just like when you cross-ref a topic you point to the topic not the title).
Tell me more about what you're doing and what you're seeing and I can try to help.

However, I'd like to have the ability to select multiple tabs and then copy ALL of the the URLs AND their titles/or copy ALL of the URLs+titles+HTML links? This can be done with the Multiple Tab Handler add on; when I download the add on, I get a message saying that using the add on will disable Firefox's tab features. I prefer to use Firefox features rather than download and use an add on. Is there a way to do this without an add on?

    Hi LRagsdale517,
You should definitely be able to upload multiple files by Shift-clicking or Ctrl-clicking the files you want to upload. Just to make sure you don't have an old version of the service cached, please clear the browser cache and then log in to https://cloud.acrobat.com/files. After clicking the File Upload icon in the upper-right corner, you should be able so select multiple files for upload.
Please let us know how it goes.

  • TCS2 - Cross References between linked Frame files not working

    Hi,
All the cross-references in my linked in FrameMaker 9 files work when output in PDF, however, when outputting WebHelp from RoboHelp 8, FrameMaker cross references that reference another FrameMaker file (i.e. not Current) do not work. The format is correct, they appear blue and underlined like every other link/cross-reference, but when moused over in the browser, there's no link to click.  The HTML created by RoboHelp does not point to a file.  For example, here's the HTML for one link not working as shown from within RoboHelp:
    <p class="FM_Bulleted"><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 7.0pt;">&#160;&#160;&#160;</span>•<span
         style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 7.0pt;">&#160;&#160;&#160;</span><a><span
         class="FM_Link">Create Supported App from
    Install</span></a><span class="FM_Bold">.</span>
RoboHelp appears to partially convert the link as <span class="FM_Link"> appears in the HTML  but I think there should be more information in the <a> definition, such as in the HTML created for a link that references a topic created from the same FrameMaker file.
    <p class="FM_Bulleted"><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 7.0pt;">&#160;&#160;&#160;</span>•<span
         style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 7.0pt;">&#160;&#160;&#160;</span><a
         href="#XREF_17096_Creating_an">Creating an App</a></p>
I've ensured all the cross-references in each framemaker file in the book have the same format and are mapped to <$paratext> in the project settings. I've also tried importing the FrameMaker book instead of linking it and the same problem persists.
Any ideas on how to make RoboHelp create the link correctly?   Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,

Most of the major cross reference issues have been resolved in TCS 2 with further improvements in TCS 3.
Please ensure that you have all the patches of TCS 2 installed on your system.
If the issue is still there, there could be an altogether different reason for cross reference not working or the issue might have been fixed in TCS 3.
The reason or workaround can be analysed once the sample files with the issues are provided.
It will be great if you could share a small sample FM document containing the cross reference and target having the issue. If the cross reference is across documents, then a FrameMaker book along with its FM files can be shared in a zip format.
