If the price is the same as an ordinary upgrade you are probably better off buying that because it can be upgraded in the future.

I believe that is correct. There should be no reason to buy both licenses for one machine. You should verify this with your reseller or MS.

Xsan panic and recurring errors

I had the volume go down in a panic last week. We were able to restart and get everything running but now have a persistent error which appears to be related. Both reference gethostbyname. I have dns setup for all of the systems on both the regular network and the metadata. One of the issues is that there is no secondary mdc, a problem the client refuses to rectify.

This error keeps cropping up in the current logs:

It might be worth while to clear your dns cache on the mdc if its also the dns.
~dscacheutil -flushcache
Is there anything else in the logs that seem relevent?
Have you run a permissions fix on the mdc anytime recently?
In your dns setting you have one host name for the public and one for the private?
internet - 192.168.1.100 mdc01."yourdomain"."internal"
private net - 192.168.2.100 mdc01-san."yourdomain"."internal"
Do you have any crostalk? (if only the private network is pluged in does it get a dhcp address? If you add the dns address to your static private port it can you get online?)

I'd suggest Amazon but be sure to read the entire sale. You can verify if it something direct from MS or from a 3rd party vendor, OEM or direct, whether or not it is an upgrade or full version and in some cases if unopened you can return it if it was the
wrong product.

Has the issue with font licences and embedding fonts in a dynamic PDF been solved?

Issue is that although LC lets you specify what typeface should be used for the caption/value in a form, it cannot discern the corresponding licencing requirements.
So in the case where even though a particular font isn’t used for any editable information – being set as the caption only – LC requires a font permitting embedding for editing, otherwise the font is not embedded at all and therefore is substituted for another typeface on a system where the font isn’t available.
Seems LC needs it's embedding requirements to catch up with the usage of type in a dynamic PDF, as in cases where the fonts bundled with Reader or system fonts aren't suitable, such as when a visual standard needs to be met, the user may not be overly keen on paying a significant financial penalty for editable font licences.

I don't think that it the case at all. If the font has a license for enbedding then that is what happens:
I accept that some fonts come with expensive "embedding for editing" licenses, but Adobe's implementation is in line with the font industry's expectations.
I don't think this is a "bug" that will be fixed.

XSAN, ACLs and new OD users.

I have xSAN FS with enabled ACLs and OD.
If i create ACL for existing folders and assign groupe(A) permissions to it. Rules work perfect. But only for usesr in this group (A) which was added before ACL was assigned.
If i create new OD user and add it into group A after ACLs was configured. User have no group permisions to this folder.
Anybody meet this issue?

So do you want to have this new server running alongside the old one - or set up the new server for a subset of users and then decommission the SL server? If alongside, is it for redundancy or to provide a sperate set of services for a subset of users?
If alongside for redundancy, thne it makse sense to let it use the existing OD.
If it's for one of the other purposes, you'll need to:
1. Set the new server up in islation from the old one (this allows you to create a new OD master)
2. Configure services
3. If you need to copy/move user data from the SL server, you'll have to take services on the SL server offline for the time it takes to copy/move.

SAP licences and Users

Hi Experts,
At our client, SAP Users are divided into 4 distinct categories depending on their usage of the SAP systems. Usage is based on number and type of transactions performed by a user.
SAP users are assigned a licence by ServiceDesk during the user creation process. Currently it is not possible to immediately see which category a user should belongs to and hence the assignment of SAP licence does not reflect the actual need/usage of a user.
Now we want to determine if the users have been assigned the right type of licences by analysing the data in SAP systems at the transaction level. This could mean analysing hundreds and thousands of transaction across many SAP systems of thousands of users.
I would like to know if someone has gone through the same excercise? if yes, I would like to hear the approach taken, tool used to extract and model the data etc...
Any help/guidance would be highly appreciated.

I would go like this
Case1. If role design is already done based on licencing,(which should be in ideal case)
1. Download users and asigned role list.
2. Categorize each role separately according to licence.
3. vLookup between list in point1 and list in point2 to match user and licence.
4. Point to note is that a user contains many roles. So the highest licence level will be applicable to him
Case2: Role design is not based on licensing
1. Select Roles and associated transaction-code list
2. Select unique tcodes from this list.This way you can find how many t-codes are being used in your system.
3. Divide each t-Code into a licence category.I hope T-code list will be no more then 2000 to 3000. This is laborious task. Possibly you can divide all dispaly tcodes and maintain t-Code separately and then decide licence type.
4. You can have now a list "Role-Tcode-Licence"
5. Associate Each role with a licence type. The point here will be that The higest licence type will be applicable to that role.
6. Download users and asigned role list.
7. Get a list "User-Role-Licence"
8. Assign a user with a licence type which is higest.
**Higest licence : You will have probably category of licences.For example Cat1-Display only Transactions Cat2- Change HR data Cat3- FI Change transactions. Now you need to decide which one is higher (have more cost) and then highest will be assigned to user.

AcroPDF.dll User Licence and Allowed Usage

I am developing a VB.Net program, part of its functionality is dispalying a pdf document. I am using the SDK AcroPDF.dll (AcroPDFLib.AxAcroPDF object) which works fine.
Can I distribute the .dll with my VB code for free even if I sell the program for a small fee? I've read the user licence but its not that clear to me re all the legal jargon.

Yes. Once you have the Security dialogue box opened in Safe Mode, as described, you will probably see two vertical lines of six boxes, two boxes shaded and ticked (Read and Execute; and Read). Under Allow, click Full Control at top. It and the two other unshaded, blank boxes under Allow (Modify and Write) will become ticked. Click Apply. Click OK. (Note! When going back to look, I did not of course click Apply then OK, having no need to change the permissions again - so the direction "Click Apply. Click OK" is in fact an assumption on my account, although I can't think what else one might do at that point.)

Error message on login to XSAN MDC and clients

Hi,
I installed a new XSAN system with SLServer,10.6.1 and XSAN 2.2 then updated XSAN to 2.2.1.
The system works fine, the only thing whenever I login from client or server I have an error message popping for all FC attached LUNs, " the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" I did a quick search on the net and it seems to be related missing AppleXsanFilter.kext. But for my case the kext is present at the expected location.
When I click Ignore on the message window, the message dissapears. I didnt try Initialize, I dont want to destroy my XSAN volume, but the users are pretty curious about what's the message is and if they click the wrong button, what happens.
Is there any way to have a message free login?
BTW, whoever login into the system, XSAN user, local user etc, the mesasage appears for each and every LUN attached.

Hi "bonematrix" - thanks for your suggestion. I found the Help icon but was unable to find "Change, delete or reorder wifi networks" under WiFi. I called my internet provider because earlier in the year I had problems accessing my e-mail because they had changed some of the security settings. Licences and compatability

1) Does anyone here know the legal position regarding purchasing second hand software? Are people allowed to sell their software with the license keys to a new purchaser. If they have lost the key but the disks are clearly genuine Apple supplied (with boxes, manuals etc) will Apple supply a replacement key? If not how can you get the S/W to work?

With regard to the Apple guidelines over proof of purchaase do you know if they will accept my proof of purchase from the current owner (a private individual) by producing an Invoice from him etc or do I have to try to get original purchase documentation from him.
If he's lost the licence key I guess he's lost the original purchase info?
I don't even know if he is the original purchaser but they are genuine discs, boxes and manuals etc
