Xsan and firewire800

Could I use Xsan using TCP/IP over Firewire800?
I don´t want to use the "firewire disc" -in other mac- (it´s a RAID) as target disc with firewire800 because I want use that mac as Render cluter node

I'm not able to answer your questions, Cloud.
For all:
A RAID system, for example 14 hard disks, can I divide it in this way:
* 4 drives: RAID 0
* 4 drives: RAID 0 (mirror for a RAID 0,1 with the previous)
* 4 drives: RAID 0 (independent)
* 2 drives: JBOD or single drives.
Or are there any kind of bonds, ties, and if so which are the limits?
Thank you.

  • Xsan and FCPx

We are looking to upgrade our Current xSan and FCP 7 Suites to FCPX. I have a question as far as work flow. Currently we are Runnung 3 MacPros FCP Suites with 32 bit Intel Chips and OS 10.6.8. We are looking to go to new MacPros loaded and FCPX. We have questions as to how it will work with our current San Volume which is 4 xserve raids and one Promis raid, stripped as two volumes . We also use an Apple xServe for file sharing.  All being Shared over Fiber. The bigest question is over sharing a volume and Shareing FCPX Project Files, can it be done. Can two FCPX Station Share the same san volume at the same time, share footage and assets. We do not want to work on the same project ate the same time but do want to be able to hand of the project to another edit station to have finishing touches put on it. Currently we can do that by just opening the project from our shared Apple File Server. Can we do the same with FCPX? If we save the Event folder on a Shared File Server can another Edit station open it once I close it? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    James

I think if you read over the Apple white paper you will get a clearer indication of what they intend for FCP X and XSAN project and event sharing currently.
Final Cut Pro X: Xsan Best Practices white paper
Final Cut Pro X: Xsan Best Practices
That being said, it depends on how you want to work. The current approved method of using SAN locations within FCP X allow an editor to gurantee they are the only one working on the project / events. All others need to request access to the SAN location before they can use it. And by request, I mean, they must ask the other editor to disconnect from the SAN location before they can mount it. This works well for editors working on a project by themselves before possibly handing it off to another edtor.
Of course, there also ways to share the footage and / or events which allows both editors to share the media and working on separate projects.
And beyond a certain level this manual, shared storage but not shared project workflow can get very messy. If FCP X does not detach from the SAN location then who knows who had it last, and who then can open it. Not ideal. When there are a lot of editors we need a clearer hand-off then search the SAN for hidden dotfiles (.fcplock, and .fcpuser).
I'm sure Apple is revising this strategy internally, or at least I hope so. Something like Final Cut Server made the check in . check out very rigid but very orderly. These days Cantemo Portal is filling the gap where Final Cut Server used to be a good fit. At a certain size and workflow using a DAM / MAM makes sense to organize assets and projects.

  • FC switch for xsan and xgrid!

    Hi,
Can somebody suggest me any swithc which will work with Xsan and Xgrid (over  mac pro 5.1 FC card - lsi7204ep) with 20 port, 8 port default active?
    P.S.
One interesting thing is that on LSI home page this card (lsi7204ep) has no support to Mac OS, however it's lates that come with Mac Pro 5.1!

Go with the QLogic devices.  I've had good success with their products from the 5200 on up.  Some units have dual power (which saved my bacon).  If your sales rep tries to sell you the enterprise management suite say no thanks.  I've been able to do everything with the built in web management tool.

  • XSAN and 4K video editing

I currently have an Apple Xsan 3 deployment using Mavericks Mac Mini MDC Atto Thunderlink to FC,  Promise 610f RAID with a JBOD and a Qlogic 5602FC 4GB switch.
I was originally looking to simply upgrade my storage as our editors are working in ProRes422 in Final Cut ProX without any issues. As our Promise RAIDs were going out of warrantly, I felt comfortable replacing the RAID and building a new volume on new RAID hardware. But then... I was told in the middle of 2015 we will need to be able to edit 4K.  I did some Googling and see there is a wide variety of 4K formats. I am currently trying to nail down the format they will be using. I am also trying to nail down how many streams, I will need to feed to our edit stations.
Has anyone worked with 4K on an Apple Xsan? I am a bit confused on the requirements... from what I have read 4Gb FC is not going to cut it... 8Gb FC can handle some, but may have issues with some formats... 16Gb FC looks capable but the RAIDs I have been looking at use 8Gb FC.
Any input would be appreciated. I am in the Washington, Baltimore area.
    Thanks,
    Ray

The speed of the RAID and the Thunderbolt connection would help. But hopefully, you don't need to buy more equipment and no, it's not the CPU. (The GPU, on the other hand, could be a factor.)
Check in Viewer Display options and if if Quality is set to Better Quality change it to Better Performance. If you're not already optimizing, transcode a clip and see whether the playback is good enough, And if neither of those steps is enough, transcode another clip to Proxy and change your Media setting to Proxy (again in Viewer display Options). If you use Proxy, remember to change the Media setting back to Original/Optimized before exporting.

  • Xsan and Final Cut Pro Setup

Hello All, I am setting up an Xsan system to be used for Final Cut Pro HD editing. I have 2 full XRAIDs using 400 gb disks. I will have 2 PowerMac G5 editing stations. All connected together using a SanBox 5200 switch and a gigabit ethernet switch for the network.
I would like some feedback on RAID setup.
I plan on creating a 2 disk Metadata array using RAID 0, the remaining 4 disks on the controller ( one hot spare) will be used as an ingestion area for HD video data. I am planning on setting this up as RAID 0 as well. My thinking here is that I dont need the redundancy in the Ingestion volume because we will keep the original HD tapes that the data was ingested from. The hot spare will provide a very small amount of protection to the 2 RAID 0 arrays on this controller. On the other side of the XRAID I will build a 6 disk RAID 5 array for the production files. The other XRAID will be setup as 2 additional 6 disk RAID 5 production arrays. All of the production arrays will be added to a storage pool and a volume created from the pool.
Is this the preffered method? what would you do or have done? Any drawbacks to the method I described. Does a volume built from RAID 5 arrays and hosted on 3 controllers have enough speed for HD editing? Any experiences shared is helpful info.
    Thanks.
    Eric

    Eric,
First, I'd recommend you spend the $15 and pick up "The Xsan Quick-Reference Guide" by PeachPit press. It goes into a fair bit of detail on recommended configurations.
Second, I'm going to assume you meant a 2-disk RAID 1 for metadata. RAID 0 would be useless for this purpose -- Metadata isn't high-bandwidth, and you NEED protection from it. Lose your metadata volume, lose your SAN. It's that simple. So use a RAID 1 mirror for it.
Also, for ingest, I'd recommend RAID 5. RAID 5 is the same speed as RAID 0, and it has protection.
Note that a hot spare is absolutely worthless when you're dealing with RAID 0. It will give you no protection -- when a disk in RAID 0 fails, the game is over. No restoration is possible on the hot spare -- there is no parity data that can be used to reconstruct the data.
So I'd do a 2-disk RAID 1 for metadata, and either 4 or 5 disks RAID 5 for ingest (depending on if you want a hot spare). Note, that you will not be able to ingest uncompressed HD onto this volume -- the bandwidth required is way too high. You could do DVCPRO-HD, perhaps.
If you set up 3 controllers as "6-disk RAID 5 + hot spare," your available bandwidth should be in the 200-240 MB/sec range, which is sufficient for HD editing. It will only be sufficient for one user at a time, of course, and you'd want to avoid having someone do big file copies on the SAN while the editing is taking place.

  • XSAN and Tape Library  compatibilty

XSAN page lists only ADIC and Exabyte as "supported". ADIC Scalar 24 is "buggy" according to some user reports. Want to use an Overland Storage Library w/2x LTO-3 Native FC drives. Will it work??

what backup software are you going to be using with Xsan... that is the key question you should be asking. The options at this point are: Tolis Group BRU, Atempo Time Navigator, or Bakbone NetVault. Check their documentation for library support.

  • XSAN and OD Master

    Hello,
    I just have 2 questions
    1. Can I have the OD master on leopard and leave the xsan which are on other xserves running tiger?
    2. If I have to rebuild the OD master because of issues I'm having (I posted on the OD forum), does that have any affect on the xSan. of course I would shut the xSan down while I do this.
    Thanks.

To reiterate Frank's point - if your OD is an XSAN CLIENT - then yes, you have a big problem if it is running 10.5 but your MDCs are running 10.4. Otherwise, no problem.
Also, when you say "rebuild," it depends on what exactly you mean by "rebuild." If you plan on recreating users from scratch, then you will have permission problems on XSAN unless you are careful to make sure you reassign UIDs exactly the same. If you plan on restoring your entire LDAP, or even just exporting users and groups from your current build, then importing them on your new build - you should be OK.

  • Xsan and Third Party Storage

I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to this -- but will Xsan work with third-party storage (i.e a non-Xserve RAID)? I'm pretty sure as long as it's a certified Fibre Channel device that all is good. I just wanted to get feedback from those who have tried it (and let me know what storage you're using).
    THANKS!

  • XSAN and TSM (Tivoli Storage Manager)

    Hello,
I wanted to know if anybody had already used the TSM (Tivoli Storage Manager) solution from IBM to backup an XSAN?
From what I have read on the IBM tech guide, the solution is fully compatible.
    Best regards,
    Cédric

    Hello Cedric.
I have used IBM TSM 5.2 with XSAN for a whole year without problems.
Our Xsan environment have 15 mixed INTEL&PPC Workstation, 2 Intel MDC, OSX-OSXSERVER 10.4.9, XSAN 1.4.1
We have a 3584 LTO library with 2 frames, 4 drives LTO2 and 2 LTO3. But we use only LTO3 with TSM from MAC. Our IBM TSM Server is a PSeries 630.
Now we are looking for a MAM system that can manage a proxy version of our archive. Parcial restores features could be very helpful for us.

  • Xsan and NetVault Backups?

    Hello All,
    Current setup:
    17 Xserves
    5 X RAIDs
    1 Promise RAID
ADIC Scalar 100 (using BakBone NetVault)
    Nothing Xsan'd yet
I am curious how you, if anyone, are backing up your Xsan to tape, specifically with NetVault or some similar backup solution. I would imagine that you can backup all of your Xsan data via the main Xsan node. I guess I am not totally familiar with Xsan setup at this point but are all of the RAIDs actually mounted on the main Xsan node, so that they can be accessed by NetVault's main server via ethernet? Or would I install Xsan on my NetVault's main server and pipe it into the Xsan fibre switch, backing up via fibre directly?
I will be creating an Xsan in the future and I am looking for any recommendations having to do with NetVault and Xsan.
    Thx!

I admin a StorNext Storage Manager setup. We have a Scalar i500 with 120 slots for LTO-3 to cover a 27TB StorNext SAN with Xsan clients. It keeps a copy of all managed files and does not require dedicated nightly activity to keep us backed up. It also allows for nearline storage. It can be tricky though, and you need to be careful about how you implement it. I like the HSM approach better since it backs up everything on the fly in the background as a function of the filesystem instead of requiring long stretches of time to do full and incremental traditional backups. It is more expensive though. You really need to need it to justify the cost.
I used an Atempo Time Navigator backup server in the past with an Xsan. Similar to your BakBone in structure. You just need to have your backup controller as a client of the SAN. At that point the software just thinks the SAN volume is local and can back it up like anything else. The nasty part is bandwidth and time, but only because SAN volumes tend to be so large and nights and weekends are only so long. You can put the Scalar on the FC fabric, but you will need to zone it away from the SAN and have the BakBone box straddle the zones. That does not really offer a bandwidth advantage over directly attaching the Scalar to the BakBone box though (as long as your HBA has the port count to do that).

  • XSAN and FCP5 - Drops frames during capture

We are trying to capture video directly to an XSAN volume from FCP, and we get dropped frames usually within 5 minutes. Capturing to local HD works fine.
We've been dealing with these problems on and off ever since we got the XSAN. We've 'tuned' our fiber switch, reinstalled 10.4 and FCP and the XSAN software from scratch, ran all the updates to the latest stuff, and still no loving from the SAN environment.
I'm coming to the conclusion that this just doesn't work - does anyone else capture from a DV deck directly to a SAN volume successfully? If so, any hints or tips about what / where I might turn to get this working??
    Thanks!

    Derrick,
I have successfully captured from SDI with 8 Channels of Embedded Audio through the AJA I/O into the DV Codec (which ends up being 4.5 Mb/S) for more than an hour without a problem (directly to Xsan Volume).
If you are hitting a wall about 5 minutes everytime, it sounds like the cache in the controllers on the Xraid are filling up (1 Gig = 5 minutes of DV) and not writing to the drives properly.
I might sound far fetched, but just a though.

  • XSAN and Video Production

Hello! Has anyone ever set-up an Xsan System for Video Production? I am building a new program and want to run FCP Server along with FCP Studio 2. Is there any information on production companies I could use as a model?
Mac Book Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Information on FC Server is scarce at the moment. It's not shipping until this summer ("Summer" typically means the very last day of summer i.e. September 21st
As far as Xsan setups for video production -- there are hundreds or thousands of folks doing that.
Look at www.apple.com/xsan there are diagrams of example setups, and there are many reference pages on Apple.com if you look.

  • XSan and (Dell) Compellent?

I am looking at implementing a VMware server running various Windows and Linux VMs for a Mac network, the supplier is likely to recommend a Dell based solution.
I would like to make this solution as Mac friendly as possible to allow possible further use of the SAN that this will include so I was wondering if people here could advise as to the current state of play regarding Mac i.e. OS X compatibility of Dell's Compellent SAN range. Would it be possible to use this with Apple's XSan software?
Can the Compellent be managed at all by a Mac?
I believe this used to be possible before Dell acquired Compellent but could not find an indication if they have maintained such Mac compatibility.
