XSAN and storage space

Hello,
we are running Mavericks 10.9 XSAN. We have single volume 75TB. XSAN admin reports that volume usage is 24TB while all folders combined are taking 14TB. In other words : we are lacking 10TB of space.
Ive heard that people had these issues in past but i haven't found a single solution to this.
Is there anyone with similar experience?
Regards

Can you elaborate some more?
If  i have helped at all a click on the white star below would be nice thanks.

  • How can I calculate disk space/DB space and storage spaces.

    Hi all,
How can I calculate space clauses and memory related parameters for tables and table spaces? Updation is not allowed in these tables.
I have to create a database also.
I expect a reply with examples.
    [email protected]
    [email protected]
    Thanks for all replies .

    Boby,
The formula to estimate the storage parameters for tables and indexes are the following:
Table size = db block size * (# of Estimated rows in 12 months * average row length)/(db block size-90) *(1-PCTFREE/100)
Let assume that you want to create a table called Jose_tab,
    db block size = 4092
Estimated row length in 12 months = 1000
    Average row len = 100
    PCTFREE(Updation is not allowed) = 0
Then, your INITIAL storage parameter will be estimated as follows:
    4092*1000*100
    (4092-90)*(1-0/100)
    = About 10M
Your create table command will look like this,
    CREATE TABLE jose_tab
    (col1 VARCHAR2(10), col2 NUMBER(2),
    ....coln VARCHAR2(100))
    STORAGE(INITIAL 10M NEXT 10M
    PCTINCREASE 0)
    PCTFREE 0 PCTUSED 80
    TABLESPACE tablespace_name;
Storage parameters for tablespace depends on the amount of disk space available. You can ignore tablespace storage parameters since the size of the tablespace is determined by the size(s) of the data files. Refer to the DBA manual for details.

  • Disk images and storage space.

    Dear members:
After a disk image is created and saved, how much storage space does one need to work with it ?
Let's say I create a 10 GB disk image that is saved in an encrypted form. Once I try to open it I have first to provide a password and then the drive corresponding to this image mounts to the desktop. Once the drive is mounted, since I have the disk image and the drive, does it mean that I actually have 20 GB added to my desktop folder or both files combined still take up only 10 GB of storage space ?
    One other question:
I have saved a disk image to an external Firewire hard disk. When I click on this disk image the drive mounts on the desktop. Is there a way to open this disk image so that the drive is actually mounted on the same external disk where the image is or does it always mount on the desktop independent of where the image is ?
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Best regards,
    Joseph Chamberlain

    Hi, Joseph.
    1. You wrote: "In case I wanted to would it be possible to create a disk image on another drive and also mount the disk from this image on that same drive ? For instance, can I create a disk image on an external Firewire drive and then mount the disk from this image on this same external disk ?"I'm not quite sure what you're saying here. I thought I addressed this.
You can create a disk image and save it on an external drive. Double-clicking that disk image (saved on an external drive) will mount it, with the mount point being in /Volumes, same as every other mounted volume on your computer, as discussed in my prior post.
    2. You wrote: "On another discussion I initiated one poster said that when creating a bootable external drive it is important to uncheck the square for "Ignore Ownership". I just installed OS X 10.4 on a LaCie 120 GB external Firewire drive and after the installation process noticed that the "Get Info" panel shows the box "Ignore Ownership" checked. Is there a problem ?"You do not want "Ignore Ownership" checked on a bootable volume, i.e. a volume on which you installed Mac OS X. That installation may not work properly.
    3. You wrote: "In case there is, shouldn't OS X have unchecked this option as it installed itself on this particular drive ?"I don't know. I've never tried installing Mac OS X on an external volume that had "Ignore Ownership" checked before installation.
    4. You wrote: "What does the option "Ignore Ownership" mean and why/when should I use it ?"See "Mac OS X 10.4 Help: I don't have permission to use a disk. The only time I would use this feature is if I had a volume on an external drive, e.g. FireWire drive, that needed to be accessed and written-to by multiple users of the computer to which that external drive was connected. The volume in question should contain only data — not a bootable volume, i.e. one with Mac OS X installed — and one should also be prepared that anyone could add, delete, or modify files on that volume since permissions are ignored when "Ignore Ownership" is enabled.
FYI: When asking multiple questions, numbering them individually is helpful. Then someone can respond by number to link the answer to the question, vs. quoting the text as above.
    Good luck!

  • ITunes Match and storage space on iPhone/iPad

I just subscribed to iTunes Match. I was under the impression that it would free up space on my devices since the songs are in the cloud. My storage space has stayed the same. What am I doing wrong or was I wrong to assume that?

The music that you had originally synced to those devices is still there since you haven't deleted it. If you do not wish to have the music on the devices go to Settings > General > Usage, tap Music, then swipe across "all music" and tap the delete button. This will remove all music that is presently stored on the device.

  • IPhone 3GS with iOS 5 and storage space/app problems... Please read and help

I have an iPhone 3GS with iOS 5. Before the update I had a load of apps etc and was left with approx 4gb space left. Since the update removed ALL my apps from my iPhone, I still have the same ammount of space. Why is this?

    Hi,
Are you sure your phone has not been unlocked or jailbroken at some time as the same thing happened to me.
I had the phone secondhand and did not know. Updating to IOS 5 locked the phone back to the original service provider which was AT&T in USA and I am in UK.
    Hope this helps,

  • Auto encoding and storage space using iDVD to burn a movie?

Today I wanted to burn some old TV shows I had downloaded (legally) onto a blank DVD, that could be viewed on a regular DVD player/TV. I used iDVD to do so, dragging and dropping .avi files onto iDVD's start up window. Everything worked fine, iDVD automatically processed/encoded the 350 MB files, and the resulting DVDs played the shows fine on my consumer DVD. Two questions:
    1. Even though the files were only 350 MB, iDVD would not let me burn more than one file at a time onto a blank 4.7 Gb disc. Even after expanding the file during processing, the resulting new burn project was only 1.86 Gb. With 4.7 on a blank disc, why would iDVD not let me drop at least one more file for inclusion?
    2. iDVD did everything automatically; there were no pop ups asking me about how I wanted it encoded on the disc, as an avi file or consumer-readable DVD, and no indicator of how big it would expand after processing or how much space it would take up. Is that normal, or shouldn't I be given choices, including write-speed/quality/compression/file size choices that might have affected how many 1-hour episodes could fit on a blank DVD?
Thanks for any clarity on this.

    Hi R
Not familiar with .avi files I can share some thoughts about iDVD.
iDVD doesn't care about Mega or Giga bytes ONLY minutes of movie.
iDVD 5 can handle two qualities.
    - less than 60 min movie and (Best performance)
    - less than 120 min (Best quality)
The iDVD menue is included in this = less time for movie.
That's why one can not with iDVD put 2 x 60 movie on a DVD.
You have to select Quality from start then drop Your movies into the
theme window (at least that's what I do with .mov files)
With other DVD creating programs like DVD Studio pro or as I use
Devideon which came with my external DVD burner I can choose all
kinds of settings and even squese in 4 hours on a DVD (with less than
    VHS quality)

  • Help with purchased music and storage space for nano

I have a 2G Nano...I have purchased a few songs from itunes, but mostly transfered music from my CD's. The other day, I bought 2 songs from itunes and they will play in my library but not on my ipod. They show up, but when I go to them to play, it skips right over them. Any suggestions? I have updated several times and still no luck.
Also, I have a 2G, and I have 270 songs stored in my itunes library, and when I update (as I have several times in the past few days) it tells me that the disk space is full on my ipod, it is only using 1.01 G. Any suggestions?
Also, I have another question...if you resotre your ipod to factory settings, does it wipe out your songs in your library?
Thanks for the help...this is really bugging me.

    See this article first.
iPod does not play content purchased from the iTMS.
Also, have a look at these articles.
<a href="<a href="http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60955">How much stuff will fit on my iPod?
My iTunes says my iPod is full but it isn't!.
"if you resotre your ipod to factory settings, does it wipe out your songs in your library"
Only on the iPod, it does not affect your iTunes library.

  • Whats the maximum amount of ram and storage space i can fit into my 13" matchbook pro (early 2011)

I am looking to upgrade my mackbook pro and was wondering what's the highest amount of ram and maximum amount of hard drive space i can get.
also whats a good brand i should use for both ram and hard drive.

I like Hitachi (HGST) and have 6 of them in my inventory.  I never had any WD drives and there are some who do not speak well of them who's opinions I respect.
I also have many Seagate HDDs and currently have 1 TB Seagate SSHDs in my MBPs.  They are performing satisfactorily.
    Ciao.

  • After upgrading to 8.1 Pro from 8.0 Pro, my Storage Spaces and Storage Pool are all gone.

Under 8.0 I had three 4-terabyte drives set up as a Storage Pool in Storage Spaces.  I had five storage-space drives using this pool  I had
been using them for months with no problems.  After upgrading to 8.1 ( which gave no errors ) the drives no longer exist.  Going into "Storage Spaces" in the control panel, I do not see my existing storage pool or storage drives. I'm prompted
to create a new Pool and Storage Spaces.  If I click the "Create Pool" it does not list the three drives I used previously as available to add.
Device Manager shows all three drives as present and OK.
Disk Management shows Disks 0,1,2,6.  The gap in between 2 and 6 is where the 3,4,5 storage spaces drives were.
Nothing helpful in the event log or the services.
I've downloaded the ReclaiMe Storage Spaces recovery tool and it sees all of my logical drives with a "good" prognosis for recovery.  I've not gone down that road yet though because it requires separate physical drives to copy everything to
and they want $299 for the privilege.
Does anyone have any ideas?  I'm thinking of doing a fresh 8.1 install to another drive to see if it can see it or reinstalling 8.1 to the existing drive in the hope that it will just suddenly work.  Or possibly going back to 8.0.
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi,
“For parity spaces you must backup your data and delete the parity spaces. At this point, you may upgrade or perform a clean install of Windows 8. After the upgrade or clean installation is complete, you may recreate parity spaces and
    restore your data.”

  • HT4910 I have 2 lines and on 1 of the main phone I went to settings then storage & backup automatically it showed how much space i have which was not allot and it also showed the other line storage space. I click on manage storage and it used to show both

I was told that I have 14.9 gb of space on my phone when my total is 15gb. I was adviced to free storage and to click on settings and manage my storage by either purchase more or turning off or deleting some of the back ups. When I went in to settings then to icloud it usually would of showed me both phone storage memory and when I started going down my list and turning off some of the apps from back ups of certain app all of a sudden I couldnt no longer see my phone storage memory or my account name for that matter. Now I only see the other line username and storage space that the other phone has.
What can I do? I used to see the list of all the apps I have on icloud and now its empty and it tells me I have available 13.4 gb available.
    Please advice. Thank you
    Patricia

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

  • First cluster - Server 2012 r2 - storage spaces issues

    Hi Everyone
We just purchased two new servers (Lenovo RD640's) and an external SAS JBOD enclosure (the Lenovo SA120), and we would like to set up a 2012 r2 failover cluster with clustered storage spaces as the shared storage.  Currently they are
on their own domain with the virtual active directory server residing locally on one of the servers.
Preface: I've created and destroyed the cluster and storage spaces multiple times trying to solve this issue, so I don't know if I may have "leftovers" from those attempts now causing issues for me.
I can create the cluster, and it passes validation, and can create a clustered storage pool, but every time I try to create a virtual disk (either through the Failover cluster manager, the server manager, or powershell), it won't attach.  If
I try to manually attach it I get the message: "Error attaching or detaching virtual disk: Failed to attach virtual disk to <node name>. Access denied"
Finally (and I don't know if this is related or not), when in storage spaces on the server manager, there is a gold banner at the top that says "Incomplete communication with cluster <cluster name>. The following cluster nodes or clustered roles
might be offline or have connectivity issues: <cluster name>"
I'm logged in with full domain administrator credentials, and have been running my head against this wall for a few days now.  Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks for your responses. Here is what I have to report:
When I destroy the cluster, and create the storage spaces on just one of the two servers (with the other server powered down), I'm able to create the storage pool - using all the HDDs and SSDs - and virtual disks (both tiered and non-tiered) without issue.
As soon as I create the cluster again, the virtual disks become "detached", and I'm back to the situation described initially.
@Apamnapat, here's the output of the powershell commandlets you suggested:

  • 3 Node hyper-V 2012 R2 Failover Clustering with Storage spaces on one of the Hyper-V hosts

    Hi,
We have 3x Dell R720s with 5x 600GB 3.5 15K SAS and 128 GB RAM each. Was wondering if I could setup a Fail-over Hyper-V 2012 R2 Clustering with these 3 with the shared storage for the CSV being provided by one of the Hyper-V hosts with storage spaces installed
(Is storage spaces supported on Hyper-V?) Or I can use a 2-Node Failover clustering and the third one as a standalone Hyper-V or Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V and storage spaces.
Each Server comes with QP 1G and a DP10G nics so that I can dedicate the 10G nics for iSCSI
Dont have a SAN or a 10G switch so it would be a crossover cable connection between the servers.
Most of the VMs would be Non-HA. Exchange 2010, Sharepoint 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2 would be the only VMS running as HA-VMs. CSV for the Hyper-V Failover cluster would be provided by the storage spaces.

I thought I was tying to do just that with 8x600 GB RAID-10 using the H/W RAID controller (on the 3rd Server) and creating CSVs out of that space so as to provide better storage performance for the HA-VMs.
    1. Storage Server : 8x 600GB RAID-10 (For CSVs to house all HA-VMs running on the other 2 Servers) It may also run some local VMs that have very little disk I/O
    2. Hyper-V-1 : Will act has primary HYPER-V hopst for 2x Exchange and Database Server HA-VMs (the VMDXs would be stored on the Storage Servers CSVs on top of the 8x600GB RAID-10). May also run some non-HA VMs using the local 2x600 GB in RAID-1
    3. Hyper-V-2 : Will act as a Hyper-V host when the above HA-VMs fail-over to this one (when HYPER-V-1 is down for any reason). May also run some non-HA VMs using the local 2x600 GB in RAID-1
The single point of failure for the HA-VMs (non HA-VMs are non-HA so its OK if they are down for some time) is the Storage Server. The Exchange servers here are DAG peers to the Exchange Servers at the head office so in case the storage server mainboard
goes down (disk failure is mitigated using RAID, other components such as RAM, mainboard may still go but their % failure is relatively low) the local exchange servers would be down but exchange clients will still be able to do their email related tasks using
    the HO Exchange servers.
Also they are under 4hr mission critical support including entire server replacement within the 4 hour period.
If you're OK with your shared storage being a single point of failure then sure you can proceed the way you've listed. However you'll still route all VM-related I/O over Ethernet which is obviously slower then running VMs from DAS (with or without virtual SAN
LUN-to-LUN replication layer) as DAS has higher bandwidth and smaller latency. Also with your scenario you exclude one host from your hypervisor cluster so running VMs on a pair of hosts instead of three would give you much worse performance and resilience:
with 1 from 3 physical hosts lost cluster would be still operable and with 1 from 2 lost all VMs booted on a single node could give you inadequate performance. So make sure your hosts would be insanely underprovisioned as every single node should be able to
handle ALL workload in case of disaster. Good luck and happy clustering :)
StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

  • Storage Space Size vs Pool Size

    Hi All:
I just finished installing WS2012R2E and getting all my clients connected, transferring them from my aging WHS V1
All seems to be working well but I'm scratching my head on the fact that the Storage Pool reports 3.63Tb of storage  (I have 2 x 2Tb drives) but the storage space reports 16Tb....  I tried changing the "Storage Space Size (Maximum)" to
something closer to the actual storage pool capacity but no number seems acceptable to the field.
I get it (sort of) that the storage space is different from the pool, but it seems to me that if the dashboard storage tab reports the storage space with a Capacity of 16Tb it does not give a clear picture of my storage situation.
In addition to that quirk, the dashboard storage space window, hard drives tab reports 1Tb of used space but when I click into "Manage Storage Spaces"  that window reports that I'm using 2.16Tb of the 3.63Tb - ?!
I've tried searching this with no joy - maybe I just haven't stumbled across the right doc yet...   Can some one enlighten or point me to a detailed description of they way this is supposed to work?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
It seems that you directly click “Create a storage space” in dashboard. This wizard helps you create a default storage space on the server. The new storage space can tolerate on drive failure, and its size can group up to 16 TB.
You can click “Manage Storage Spaces” in dashboard then click “create a new pool and storage space” to specific the maximum size of the storage space.

  • Storage spaces simple mirror question

I just have a simple mirror at the moment, with just two 1tb drives in mirror mode, and it works just fine.  Two things I do wonder.  If one drive fails, I assume the files would be preserved on the other.  I wonder however if it can be plugged
into another Windows box, a Windows 7 machine for example, and read by that machine, or if it can only be read by the machine on which it was setup?
I have assumed Storage Spaces was like hardware raid in this way, but now I wonder....

    Hi,
For mirror mode, it means that Data is duplicated on two or three physical disks, and  this storage layout requires at least two disks to protect you from a single disk failure.
But you can't view the content in the disk since Storage Spaces records information about pools and storage spaces on the physical disks that compose the storage pool. Therefore, your pool and storage spaces are preserved when you move an entire storage
pool and its physical disks from one computer to another.
Windows Server 2012 starts storage that could potentially be shared with a cluster in a safe state. For Storage Spaces, that means the first time Windows connects to a storage pool, the pool starts as read-only and the storage spaces will start in a detached
state. To access your data, you must set the storage pool to read-write and then attach the storage spaces.
These steps do not apply to Windows 8 – storage pools start as read-write and storage spaces start as attached.
