XSan Corrupt Files Causing Big Problems

Hello
We have 2 PPC XServes running 10.4.8 with XSan 1.4.1 on 1x Xraid, xsan user quotes are also setup. This all seems to be working smoothly but we have serious issues when users save files that have exceeded the file space they have been given.
We get corrupted files ending up 0k or 4k. Basically students think they have saved files correct but when they come back to opening the file it is corrupted so they loose work. It is becoming a big problem as students are loosing work and I dont have any control of notifying the user before they hit the quota limit they have been assigned.
Does anyone else have this problem or a solution as I would greatly appreciate this.
Regards.

Hello Lee,
When you setup user quotas in XSAN admin, you should be able to set a soft quota and a hard quota, this should result in your users getting warning message when the soft quota is exceed and an error message of -1425 when they try to write over their hard quota.
There's also a quota application installed with XSAN that tells them how close to their quota they are at at all times.
Are you not seeing any error messages before the quota is exceeded? And exactly how are these files corrupted? Can they not open them at all or can they open them and it's just not quite right?

I just got a new Mac Mini, and now when I try to import photos into Lightroom, iPhoto ties to load them first, then Lightroom can't find the files.  Big problem.  What to do?

    Simple:
File -> Export to get your photos out of the iPhoto Library. In the Export dialogue you can set the kind to Original and you'll get back exactly what you put in.
Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.
Once exported, you can then trash the iPhoto Library - just drag it from the Pictures Folder to the trash and empty it.
After that, if you're entirely neurotic about it, just put the iPhoto app in the trash and empty it.

Last update for OS 10.8.2 caused big problems with HP photosmart B110 printer /scanner cannot scan does anyone have the same problem or a solution?
iMac is connected via wirelss to printer/scanner. All was working OK until update.

Assuming that the HP software is up-to-date, but still not working, have you tried Image Capture in the Applications folder. Does that work?

  • How to find corrupted file causing problem with FCP?

I couldn't use Log and Transfer of FCP 7.0.3 for AVCHD from Canon Vixia.
By starting from different user account Log and Transfer worked which means I have a corrupted file in the directory of original user account causing the error of Log and Transfer. What will be the easiest way to find the corrupted file?
    Milan

If the new user acct test allows you to work with the software, it usually means a dead pref file. The easiest way to deal with these issues is to run Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager software (free) to delete the preference files in FCP.
Open it up and look under the FCP settings in the Advanced tab. It gives you the option of selectively deleteing the various pref files associated with the app.
First back up all your FCP prefs then start deleting them one by one. Once you figure out which one is the problem, restore all the others.

  • How to find corrupted music files causing sync problems (dotted grey circle)?

I'm having the dreaded dotted grey circle problem and it's driving me mad.  Based on what I read in the for a it could be because a new music upload is corrupted, but how do I find it, when each try to sync last two hours?  And then to de-sync again lasts another half hour, to resync again lasts another two hours ... My life is not long enough for this crap!
Often I have no idea what it's doing - "waiting for changes ..." ... should I wait hours for something happen only to realise nothing's happening??

Is that even possible? We're talking about a 6-year-old iPod thereabouts.

  • Large number of events (.ics files) caused our problems

We were plagued with iCal server issues for over a year. iCal server would stop serving to clients, hang, eat CPU time, et al. I had experienced many of the errors in the logs reported her.
One calendar had over 8000 events in it. We archived older events & put them in a local iCal calendar (since they're static), this lowered the # of events to below 2000. All the iCal server problems instantly and permanently disappeared.
I had noticed that certain UNIX commands failed in the 8000+ events calendar's directory because of the large number of files (too many arguments error). For example, cat *.ics > All1.txt failed.
Perhaps Python is similarly limited or the iCal code calls UNIX commands that are barfing because of the number of files.
If you're having issues and have a calendar with over 2000 or so events, you may want to try breaking up the calendar to see if that fixes the problems.

    Hi,
Firstly check in your system if the standard job SAP_REORG_SPOOL which will delete the old spool files and this job needs to be scheduled in background on daily basis. Regarding the note its asking to check the patch levels of files which you can check at the os level in kernel directory. I am not much aware of AS400 directory structure, but normally kernle path could be /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run, /usr/sap/<SID>/DVEBMGS00/exe. In  these path u can find the patch levels of the files.

  • Masked Illustrator files causing Frame problems?

Has anyone encountered problems in FrameMaker when using masked Illustrator art? As part of our standard work process we have been told not to use masked art in Frame documents because of performance problems and printing problems. I know this was true with previous versions but was wondering if it got fixed with 8.0. We currently are using CS3 and would like to use masks if Frame can handle these files now.
Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.
    Denise

Thanks Van. I am saving the graphics as .eps files (they are Illustrator files). About a year ago we stopped using masks on .eps files created in Illustrator because of problems the writers were having in FrameMaker when they would PDF the document and I think our print vendors were complaining about problems too. Unfortunately it wasn't documented and now people are asking why we can't mask art. I want to make sure we aren't repeating ourselves on this issue before we start masking art again.

  • ITunes 8 causing big problems

iTunes 8 has messed up my computer. I cannot sync. When I plug my ipod in while computer is running, it crashes my system. After the system reboots my ipod is recognized by the computer but not by itunes. Therefore, it won't sync.
But even worse than that I can no longer sync my smartphone. I get the same recognition problem. The computer "sees" the phone, but the software doesn't.
    Can anyone help?

256*256*256 is fine, it will fit into an int, since its < 2^31 -1
However, because int is signed, the most you could squeeze into it is 2^31 - 1.
    Which is 128 * 256^3 -1.
You're multiplying 256^3 by 212. Java evaluates the right hand side of the expression, sees that everything is of type int and so assigns the result to an int, thus causing overflow. This overflowed negative number is then assigned to y, giving you your strange result.

  • Log and Transfer in Background causing big problems

I don't know if you are supposed to be able to have Log and Transfer importing in the background while you edit, but it seems to allow me to do this, but I have found a VERY BAD side effect.
Log and Transfer goes about it's business importing, but if I click around in the the bin, playback other files that are already imported, etc.  Log and Transfer will not fully import the clips it is working on.  BUT, instead of giving me ANY error, it simply thinks it did it's job.  The end results is a clip in my bin that is maybe 10 seconds long and the matching clip on the SD card is 5 minutes!  No error messages anywhere.
At first I thought I had accidently stopped recording on a good number of my clips.  I was freaking out.  Thankfully I found that the clip on the SD card was the full 5 minutes long.  When I reimported it (without doing anything in FCP at the same time) the full clip came in.  (THANKFULLY I had a disk image of the SD card and wasn't just relying on my backup for the FCP files post import).
Now I just make sure not to do anything in FCP while it's importing from Log and Transfer, but it seem like quite a dicey situation that could get people in a log of trouble.

Me too.  I've learned the lesson.  But I thought FCP used to NOT allow this.  It would beep and not let me do anything else.
I'm sad they let you do it, because someone can do it without realizing importing is still going on and mess things up and not realize it until down the road in the edit and be screwed.

  • Line 2 Is Causing Big Problems!

I'm new here so pardon the ignorance.  There seems to be a line 2 on my new Curve phone that I don't believe I need nor did I activate it.  From time to time the active lines are switched and I miss very important business calls which I cannot afford to do.  Please help me find a way to either disable line 2 or to remove it completely.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcme to the Frums!
Have you tried contacting your carrier to see about a second line on your phone ?

  • I seem to have caought some kind of virus. Firefox says it cannot find the server for whatever site I have designated. I deleted and reinstalled to fix any corrupt files but the problem persists. Firefox simply does not work.

It will only open the firefox opening window, nothing else. If I put in my home page, Yahoo, it says it can't find the server. Same for any other URL. I fully deleted Firefox, including the FireFox folder in applications, and reinstalled to no avail.

{Ctrl + P} and select your printer in the Printer - Name box near the top of that window.

  • Can iMac not waking from sleep be caused be a corrupt file

I have had my 27" iMac from July of 2011 (running Montain Lion, 8 GB RAM, 2TB hardrive, 3.4 GHz,Intel i7) for over a year and a half and ever since I bought it, it has had a problem waking from sleep.  I can hear the computer running, but when I click the mouse, keyboard, or power button, it stays asleep and I am forced to do a hard shut down.  Apple has been trying to fix the issue, but to no success.  They have replaced the hard drive, logic board, usb ports, RAM, mouse and keyboard, but it still happens.  They finally threw in the towel and are replacing the machine.  They offered to transfer all of our files (jpgs, mp3s, docs, videos, etc), but one thought occurred to me... what if the sleep issue is caused by a corrupt file?  I highly doubt that is the case, but wonder if any of the experts out here would know better than I.
If we didin't have the data transfered, we would just keep it on an external hard drive instead.  But, I would assume that it wouldn't matter if the files were on internal vs. external because either way, the computer would access the files.  That being the case, if the sleep issue was caused by a corrupt file, the computer would still access it on the external and the sleep issue would resurface.
    So, 2 questions:
Can a corrupt file cause the sleep issue?
If it is true that a corrupt file can cause the sleep issue, would it matter if the corrupt file was accessed from an external drive vs. internal drive?
    Thanks so much!
    Chris

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • FCP Splits QT movie file into several files... problem and solution.

    Hi All,
I was having problems exporting a QT movie (Video Only) of a 20 min Reel within a Feature Film I edited. The Database was quite large - the film was 2Hrs and Footage was about 12X.
FCP would split the QT movie file into several files - only one of which was openable (either in FCP or the QT player). To my surprise, I also found that even though the file opened fine, I would get an error message when trying to copy it or its associated files over to another HD (Tiger would abort, after giving me an error No. and saying that there was an error while copying). The problem was repeatable and specific to this sequence.
After some testing, I found that copying the clips (Video Only) to another sequence and re-exporting, seemed to solve the problem. My take on this is that too many ( > 12? ) Audio tracks causes problems in FCP when the database is large.
But I do need these additional tracks. Any work arounds?
    Thanks,
    RD

First, look in System Settings, and see if you've checked the box to limit file size to 2GB. Uncheck that box. See if that helps.
Or it could just be a corrupt project causing the problem.

  • Big problems with my K7N420 Pro

I've been having what is apparantly a hardware problem with my computer. Randomly the thing just resets. About once a day. Sometimes more, sometimes it goes for several days without resetting. I check the temperature in BIOS setup whenever I catch it resetting, and the CPU temp (CPU is 1700+ XP) is always between 140 and 150, not an unusual temperature (is it?)
I got to thinking that maybe the temperature does have something to do with it, so I set to blowing out the dust, thinking that should help. So I blow all around with some canned air, I close it back up, and turn it on - but something else happens. During POST the computer freezes, right at the line where it tells you how much memory you have. I reboot. It works. I run the system restore from the XP installation CD from boot, thinking "just in case it was Windows crashing all along". It freezes in mid-operation. I also start to smell something burning, you know that horrible smell of plastic burning, I'm sure. Now I panic and shut it down. I crack it open trying to determine where the smell is coming from, but can't figure out where. I boot again, with the case open, hoping to catch a stronger smell (suspecting the PSU.) Instead of booting it beeps in my ear, several very long beeps. I can't tell if they are supposed to be one continuous beep, so I can't tell what they are supposed to mean. The manual doesn't have an entry for that code. The lights in back showed one green light in the upper left, all others red. The manual says that means "Early Chipset Initialization". What the hell does that mean?
Can anyone here put these symptoms together for me and tell me what is wrong with my computer? Did I just cause another problem when I used the canned air, or was this likely a new symptom of whatever problem was causing the random reboots? Is the problem likely the PSU? Thanks.

Okay so I think I jumped to conclusions with my last message. I was tired, it was a long day, I wanted to make some quick progress in little time before I crashed (no pun intended.)
Since the configuration Slot 1: Crucial stick, Slot 2: Kingston stick, Slot 3: empty caused big problems, and Slot 1: Crucial stick, Slots 2 and 3: empty, did not, I started to wonder if I could be jumping to another conclusion, and if the problem could be on the motherboard somehow. So I tried the configuration Slot 1: Kingston stick, Slots 2 and 3: empty, and it POSTS fine! And just to confirm, I stick the Crucial stick into Slot 2, and the thing won't POST properly. First three attempts, the computer won't even activate the monitor, the fourth and fifth, it does activate the monitor, but the initial BIOS screen (the one where the memory is checked in the POST when you disable quick boot) looks all corrupted-like, with strange characters littered across the screen. I stuck the Crucial in Slot 3 to see what that would do, and the first time it freezes around 88MB during the RAM check (I left quick boot disabled), the second time it POSTS successfully.
So maybe something on the motherboard went bad such that using Slots 2 and 3 causes these problems. This model is pretty old, so does this problem sound familiar? Is it possible? I don't know the hardware architecture well enough to guess whether it's likely.
    (I have BIOS revision 2.7)
EDIT: And after trying all those configurations, going back to the original configuration, (Slot 1: Crucial, Slot 2: Kingston), it STILL beeps at me like before.
EDIT EDIT: *sigh* and now, trying the second configuration again (Slot 1: Crucial, Slots 2 and 3 empty) just so I can use the computer again, I get errors when I try to boot. Booting to the OS I already had installed, I get the Windows screen with the moving blue boxes, and then after that nothing, and whenever I try to install a new copy of the OS from disc or repair I get a BSOD. It says IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. I've no idea what that means.
