Xsan crash
Hello. I have two Xsan clusters. One cluster has four Xserve and one Xraid. That cluster has been cleanly installed with Mac OS X 10.5 and Xsan 2.0. The other cluster has four Xserve and two Xraid, and has been upgraded from Mac OS X 10.4 and Xsan 1.4 (?) to Mac OS X 10.5.8 and Xsan 2.1.1.
I just updated the clusters with the latest softwareupdates. I ran the command "softwareupdate -i -a" and rebooted "/sbin/shutdown -r now" the first cluster. That went fine. I then ran the same command "softwareupdate -i -a" and rebooted the second cluster. That did not went fine, the metadatacontroller and two client nodes stuck on booting with "panic version mis-match between kernel and cpu". The backup meta-data controller booted fine.
This is what I have tried:
1) I tried to reinstall the primary meta data controller on a spare drive. It couldn't access the data on the Xsan at all, in Xsan admin the Volumes and Mounts are gone, however, the LUNs are there. I may try to create a new file system from Xsan Admin but my guess is that i wipe the data from the old LUNs then.
2) I tried use the not crashed secondary meta data controoller. Same as above.
This is what I will try:
3) Try to check if there are any fancy command line tools to scan the LUNs for a file system without creating new ones.
4) Try to reinstall the software update patches again - boot on the spare drive and install the patches on the crashed drives to try to fix them.
Do you folks have any other ideas?
Hello. I rebooted the MDC first and when it did not boot I waited. But then a power failure rebooted the other machines for me so the only one up was the backup but not working backup meta data controller.
However, now I have access to the file system again. I solved it this way:
* Install a fresh Mac OS X 10.5.8 with Xsan 2.1.1 on the MDC on new drives.
* I mounted one of the mirrored systems drives at the MDC too.
* I copied all relevant files from /Library/Filesystems/Xsan/config to the new MDC - MyFileSystems.cfg config.plist automount.plist notifications.plist fsnameservers fsmlist.
* I set the correct IP-adress on the internal meta data ethernet (so the IP-adresses in the configuration files match the real ones)
* I rebooted the MDC.
I have no user name resolving (since I have not joined any directory service like OD/AD/LDAP etc) but the files are there.
I smiled when I found out that the command line tools are all starting with the letters cv, which do not relate to Xsan, not even StorNext but the original CentraVision file system. One may change the marketing name of a file system, but the roots stay. If people at CERN find this quite anonymous file system of many names to be stable and robust, then I will try too. <https://lbtwiki.cern.ch/bin/view/Online/AdminCVFSFilesystem>

Xsan crashed. Anybody at Apple interested in the core dump?
Dear all,
my Xsan system has a very bad crash yesterday. I've two core files now:
metadata:/cores admin$ ls -l
total 1317304
-r-------- 1 root admin 339791872 Feb 7 08:45 core.fsm.26187
-r-------- 1 root admin 334667776 Jan 17 14:11 core.fsm.26190
Does anybody now if there's a way to send them to Apple for inspection? Is Apple interested in those cores?
Best regards,
TorstenThanks for your reply.
Do you have Xsan support?
We intend to buy AppleCare for the XServe machines, but haven't done yet, as we've bought it in September only. And the unversity's money is allways seperated in fiscal years. I assume (and I've been told by the dealer), that there's a one year warrenty, isn't it?
Best regards,
Torsten
Mac OS X (10.4.4) -
Hi,
We have recently seen a very strange volume stop with Xsan 1.3. It seems that a few "panics" have forced the volume to eventually stop after 60 minutes. After manually restarting the volume a few times, it did not stop anymore and the problem did no resurface.
The issue is that we'd like to know what could be the cause of this crash and what we can do to make sure it will not happen again (with 7 editors online, these problems cause a lot of trouble).
Here are the logs:

HELP (after XSAN controller crash files are not accessible)
Hi,
We are having a major issue with one of our XSAN setups. During my breah one of the Xsan controller crashed and burned. So a college that to resuce it by rebuilding the contoller and adding the Luns to the Xsan volume.
The files are not showing up but they are still there when doing a data recovery scan.
So where I Need help with (never done this before) to get the files back. What would be next steps to get the data back?
Oh yeah, I will veryfy this today but I think the LUNS have the same identifiers and LUN ID asigned as the previous controller settings.
This Xsan setup is made out of Mac Pro Mountain Lion Xsan 3.0 (controller), two Promise Vtrak E-Class Raids and one Sandbox.
Appreciate any help thanks! Here is the result for cvfsck -nv

10.8.5 Upgrade Crashing XSAN
Anyone else experiencing issues with XSAN connectivity after upgrading to 10.8.5?
We are using XSAN for FinalCut X and it appears that very intensive reads/writes cause it to unmount the volumes on workstations.
We can also duplicate the error if we run Black Magic Disk Test on more than 1 machine on the XSAN at a time (works fine if we only are stressing 1 workstation.)
Before the update this was not an issue and we were working fine on 10.8.4.
The system logs are not telling me much. The fsmpm crash log header is below.
Process: fsmpm [4718]
Path: /System/Library/Filesystems/acfs.fs/Contents/bin/fsmpm

Anyone else having issues since the update with XSAN?The server logs do not say much.
The workstation logs state that "FSMPM is not responding" and a few moments later the volumes dismount from the workstation.
The Volumes have never dismounted from the server, only the workstations.
I have a far-fetched idea of what may be happening. The workstations are both Mac Pros (5,1) and have Pioneer BluRay Drives installed. Since the 10.8.5 update they have been disconnecting at random and the XSAN volumes follow the bluray drive.
Also, an update on BlackMagic Disk Test. It does not appear to be the problem, I have retested it and used subfolders for each machine as the test area. The volumes stay mounted under stress. -
MDC not showing in XSAN after crash
Hi,
We have a cluster composed of 2 IntelMac XServes acting as controllers and 3 mac clients. The primary controller MDC1 crashed due to bad memory. Now MDC2 appears to be the acting controller and the raid is mounted on it as well as the clients. We replaced memory in MDC1 but now it does not mount the volume and MDC1 is not listed among the computers connected to XSAN. Also, XSAN admin shows the license that belongs to MDC1 as not used by a machine. We tried adding MDC1 to the list of computers but XSAN admin crashes with these errors in the log:
Aug 26 15:19:25 sphinx [0x0-0x234234].com.apple.XsanAdmin[44701]: Assertion failed: (self.computer != nil), function -[SANRemoteAction startExecution], file /SourceCache/XsanAdmin/XsanAdmin-184.1/SANRemoteAction.m, line 386.

Aug 26 15:19:26 sphinx com.apple.launchd[1] ([0x0-0x234234].com.apple.XsanAdmin[44701]): Exited abnormally: Abort trap
Any suggestions on how to put the old MDC back in XSAN?
Thanks in advanceIf you're feeling nervous about testing the new controller, I would backup your data first, if at all possible, then when your SAN is not busy, fail the volume over to the other controller. That is, make sure your MDC1 is added as a controller, and is set up in the volume failover list, then fail the volume (in Xsan admin, or using cvadmin). The volume control should move over to the other controller, if not check out the reason (bad cables, no md network, bad configs, etc).

Media Browser crashes when accessing XSan
When using Media Browswer, (premiere or prelude) if I click on our XSAN root on the left, the 'View as:' switches to 'XDCAM-HD' and the program freezes (pinwheel). I can import items from the SAN and play footage just fine using the import dialog in Premiere or drag and drop, so it is not entirely a SAN access issue. It seems to be an error when MB tries to analyse the file structure, and gets stuck - my best guess.
It is a 16TB SAN. CS6, updated.
OSX 10.7.5
XSAN 2.3
Issue occurs on multiple SAN connected machines, including a freshly wiped, newly installed computer.
MacPros 2-4 yrs old.
Thanks for any insight.
cbHi Yannic
I am not a tech person but it may be easier to start somewhere else, say open Skype and use there settings which have a visual and audio test.
Assuming you have the same menu bar or similar Skype controls, select "tools" ... then "options" ...and you will see a menu including Sound and Video settings.
That is a good and safe place to reset / adjust your video and sound.
Remember that when the camera is usb and uses an inbuilt microphone ... under audio settings select "usb audio" .... I suspect that your speakers will not be running out of your sound control panel.
This is then the advice I have seen around streaming and adjusting broadcasting/streaming settings with flashplayer
1. Ensure the Options shows "Audio-Video" enabled.
2. After start, a Video Broadcaster window will pop-up
Click on the allow button for the Video Broadcaster to gain access to the Webcam.
3. The video Braodcaster will load onto the screen.
4. Right click on the Video Broadcaster to bring up the Flash Settings Dialog.
5. Click on the Settings and then click on the fourth icon for camera.
6. This will show a drop down of all the available cameras. Ensure the correct camera is selected.
7. Clicking on the blue camera icon will show the actual image captured by the camera. -
Xsan 2: Spotlight crashing MDC
I have a volume running 2.1.1 under 10.5.5. Spotlight needs to be running but it crashes badly when indexing some files with the MDC restarting automatically when this happens.
Is there a way for me to analyze which files could be causing this problem? So many fishy things going on with this thing.
For instance:
I tried copying a folder of 75 fonts but gave me an error 4 times. Finally on the 5 try it copied everything fine.
Also tried copying a UNIX cups folder over, that also failed twice and then finally copied over on the 3rd try.
Tried copying some webstat files, those also failed to copy.
Then tried the package again that was causing an error and it choked my coreservicesd again, had to manually restart the server again. -
XServe crashes repeatedly when trying to backup certain portion of XSAN wit
Hello everybody,
I have noticed a very strange behaviour the reason of which I could not figure out yet.
Basic Setup:
XSAN2, 2 MD controllers running 10.5.6 server, 3 clients running 10.5.6 server
XSAN1, 2 MD controllers running 10.4.11 server. 2 clients running 10.4.11 and 10.5.6 server, one of which is our backup machine.
Backup is done regularly using Bakbone Netvault 7.45 onto an Overland Tape Library.
The Netvault Server is not (yet) part of the XSAN2, as we are migrating from XSAN1.4 to XSAN2 and the backup machine has to handle clients in both.
Now, backup of the 10.4.11 clients and 10.5.6 clients runs smooth except for one.
When I try to backup certain data from one specific machine in XSAN2, this repeatedly crashes with the following kernel panic:

Xsan panic and recurring errors
I had the volume go down in a panic last week. We were able to restart and get everything running but now have a persistent error which appears to be related. Both reference gethostbyname. I have dns setup for all of the systems on both the regular network and the metadata. One of the issues is that there is no secondary mdc, a problem the client refuses to rectify.

Is there anything else in the logs that seem relevent?
Have you run a permissions fix on the mdc anytime recently?
In your dns setting you have one host name for the public and one for the private?

private net - 192.168.2.100 mdc01-san."yourdomain"."internal"
Do you have any crostalk? (if only the private network is pluged in does it get a dhcp address? If you add the dns address to your static private port it can you get online?) -
Lion Server File Sharing Crashes
We have a brand new Mac Pro (12 core with 64GB of RAM) running OS X Lion Server in a corporate environment. The server is running only file sharing and software update servers, and we have around 40 users who need to be connected over AFP at all times. This company runs 24/7 and we have an XSan environment using an ATTO Celerity 8GB 4 channel fiber card (84EN) along with a 6 port 10GB Ethernet card. The Ethernet card is configured in a link aggregation bond using ports 1-4. The idea is that clients who do not have fiber cards installed on their machines can still connect to the SAN via Ethernet and this file server. They AFP connect to the share, and of course the share is the SAN. It's a single mount point and everyone has read/write access.
The issue is that this machine keeps crashing (multiple times per day) and I cannot find any reason why. Syslog shows nothing of value and I've called into Apple Enterprise Support who also brought nothing to the table.
We initially had SMB and AFP file sharing activated but as soon as a Windows 7 client connected the machine was brought down. So, I disabled SMB via terminal (sudo serveradmin stop smb) and deactivated it via the Server app for the share point). That at least allows the machine to be up for 4-6 hours before crashing again.
This is seemingly the simplest of setups for file sharing and I would've thought that this beast of a machine would be able to handle being a file server without issue for far more than 40 clients. I'm seeing high CPU usage, which Apple support told me was perfectly normal (around 60% on the kernel_task process and around 55% on the AppleFileServer process). It also seems to consume all 64GB of memory, though it shows 60GB as inactive, but at the same time it's paging in and out.
Virtually all of the clients are running Lion (10.7.4), the server itself is running 10.7.4. There are a few ethernet connected clients running 10.6 along with two running 10.5. As I mentioned I disabled SMB so there are no Windows computers connecting to this machine at this time (though it would be nice to get that functionality back if AFP can be stabilized).
None of this makes any sense to me and I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this issue. This company simply cannot be down, especially not multiple times per day. The only way to bring things back and running from a crash is to hard boot the machine via the power button as you cannot perform a restart or a shutdown. Once the machine comes back up everything is back to working order for a few more hours until it happens again. All the memory is fine. The server rarely if ever goes down when there are only around 10-12 users connected. When there are 20+ users connected and working heavily it goes down often. When I say working heavily, I mean they are transferring huge files to the SAN (100GB+), sometimes 5 at a time per user, and there are a bunch of others who are reading large video files at a minimum of 220MB/sec from the SAN.
Though this worked on Snow Leopard without any issues, Lion just doesn't seem to be able to handle it. The odd thing is, on Snow Leopard there was only a single 1GB ethernet connection to a NAS system, whereas with Lion we have a much more powerful machine with a 6-port 10GB ethernet card and a 4 lane 8GB fiber card to a true SAN. You would think that the newer scenario with Lion would handle far more users with ease.
So far, very disappointing with regards to Lion's file serving performance. -
FCP crashes, and opening and saving projects take too much time
Since my upgrade to FCP 5.0.4 I’m having trouble on several aspects of FCP.
I am using an Xserve raid storage, connected via fiberchannel to an Xserve with 10.4.4.
The editing computers are connected via fiberchannel and Xsan to the central storage.
FCP runs on an Apple G5, and my projects run from an external disk described as above. Al the other FCP scratch disk settings are also set on the external disks.
Example:
I’m using the FCP 5.0.4 with the multi-clip mode, and one of the consequences is, that my projects become relatively large. The larger they become, the longer it takes to open (up to 10 minutes) it and to save it (up to 2 minutes). Together with these problems, FCP crashes a lot.
I set my “auto-save” at an interval of 15 minutes, to prevent to loose a lot of work, but when it takes 2 minutes to “auto-save” each time, I loose a lot of time.
So when my project was 224 MB, I made a copy of my project, and opened it from a local drive. Opening the project took also 10 minutes. But when it was open, “saving” the project took only 15 seconds, instead of 2 minutes. The “auto-save” was still on the external scratch disk. “Auto-saving” still took 2 minutes. So I set the “auto-save” on a local scratch disk, and after that, it took only 15 seconds. Opening the project still took 10 minutes. And the FCP didn’t crash frequently.
My conclusion would be that the problems have something to do with the size of the project in combination with the connection with the external scratch disks. Is this correct? If yes, how do I solve this.
And if not, what else could it be?
Out of memory
Another problem occurred when my project was 327 MB. I had a multi-clip sequence of 100 minutes, with 4 camera angles and a lot of cuts and effects in it. When I tried to “nest” the sequence, it didn’t work and got the message: “out of memory” . Then FCP crashed.
When I opened the project again (it took 10 minutes), I could not save it anymore: ”out of memory”. So now I cannot work with this project anymore.
How do I solve this?
Is my project or sequence too big?
Another crash example
FCP crashed sometimes, when I switch my “Ëxternal Video” setting from “Blackmagic 8 bit” to “Firewire PAL”. Could this have something to do with it the problems I previously described?
Can anyone help me with these problems?
G5 Mac OS X (10.4.4)I've run into a simliar problem and I believe I traced the issue down to the number of files on the drive. A drive I was using had over 600,000 files on it. Opening projects took 5+ minutes, saving took 2+, for a 15 minute simple project.
See if that is your issue.
Edit: 600,000 files on the scratch/capture disk. -
Why do server.app crash sometimes? Can I use it this way as a router?
Hi everyone!
I have a problem, sometimes the server.app crash, I don't know why.
The Mac OS system do not crash, It's just the server.app.
You can se the crash logg in the buttom of this post, I have three logg files.
I also have an other quastion, I want to use the mac mini as a router but in a special way.
It's importen that all of my devices can access the mac mini server.
I thinking of buying an thunderbolt -> ethernet adapter so I can use the mac mini as a router.
I got 1000Mbit internet connection and my router can just get like 600mbit passtrough from wan -> lan port.
If I set it up likes this, shod it work?
Internet ---> Mac mini ---> every device I use with eithernet cable, like 10 devices.
|
--> Router --> Wifi devices like iPhone / iPad.
If I set it up like that can every device access the mac mini in the same network?
Here is the latest crash logg file from the mac mini:

sudo serveradmin settings dhcp
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. Confirm. You don't need to post the warning. Directory corrupted cvfsck crashes
G5 Xsan RAID etc - power failure while deleting some files - when the system came back up it wouldn't mount the Xsan Volume - I tried cvfsk to repair and after a long list of repairable errors it goes into an infinite loop trying to delete a damaged inode:
"Directory entry ... is an orphan. Removed."
then
"Error: Cannot remove lookup .... entry from inode 0x2faddf2324
These two lines repeat until cvfsck runs out of memory and crashes with a bus error
Unfortunately none of the repairs listed to that point get written back to the disk so it's no safe to use.
Help!I have never seen cvfsck do something usefull, when data goes corrupt you're toasted and need to reformat the whole volume!!!
nice isn't it?
That's why it is called a none managed cluster filesystem, when you want a managed clusterfilesystem you have to pay a lot more... -
Intel Xserves Crash only on weekends
We have 10 Intel XServes that we received in early December. For some reason anywhere between 2-6 of the 10 crash and become unresponsive, only on the weekends, usually Saturdays. Very odd.
I've been checking them every weekend since we've purchased them and it has been consistent for the last 5+ weeks. They crash only on weekends.
I found this in the crashreporter log on one of the servers, they all have similar logs:
Sat Dec 23 14:28:50 2006 crashdump[120]: crashdump invoked as panicdump
Sun Dec 24 02:11:08 2006 crashdump[1814]: crashdump started

Sat Jan 13 10:01:33 2007 crashdump[120]: crashdump invoked as panicdump
Does anyone have any ideas? What other logs should I be checking?
Quad G5s, Intel XServes Mac OS X (10.4.8) Xsans, XServe RAIDs, oh my...The "drone" is our encoding software. That may be the cause, but i'm not entirely sure of course.
Here is the panic log:
