  • Fan died in XSan card need a new one

So the fan on my Xsan card in my G5 tower died I was wondering if anyone had one from a broken card or something they would want to sell me. Or if people knew if the card wouldn't over heat in a G5 chassy. thanks!!

I take it you mean the fan on your fibre channel card? We've had loads of these fail. Some were sent back under warranty, only to be replaced with identical units that quickly failed again.
We're pretty handy with a soldering iron here, I don't suggest you attempt the following unless you are too:
Obtain a 35mm slimline fan from an electronics supplier. Cut away the housing to leave just the impeller and motor assembly. Remove the faulty fan, and dismantle to leave just the base plate with its three mounting lugs. Glue the new fan to the old base plate. Transfer the power connector from old to new, and sleeve up with heat shrink. Fit the new fan with the three screws through the donor mounting plate. Connect up and you're done.
The new fan will stand slightly proud of the card, but operation is unaffected.
We considered just running fan-less, but argued that the card wouldn't have been fitted in the first place if it were unnecessary.
It's not a pretty work around, but it works well.

  • Ipod engineer needed:Can Itunes physically destroy 2 ipods?

This happend to me a few weeks ago:
    "I have a big problem:
I tried to copy some tv series to my ipod when it was connected. I had enough free space. That went OK. Then when I tried to upload some music, it said the Ipod was full ( which it was not, and gave an error trying to write the itunes database to my ipod.)
At that moment my windows XP crashed and the drive letter was gone, and my ipod had crashed. Now, everytime I connect my ipod via firewire it crashes as soon as I connect it.
When I use USB2 I can access everything as normal. I updated right a way my rirmware to the latest one, which was no problem.
However, everytime I connect with firewire my ipod crashes and only a reset helps. I can still play music, and use it
can anyone give my any tips.
BTW 40 GbB iPod the latest one"
The store connected the ipod to firewire to a MAC and it worked ?????
Then I got home and at my PC it didnt work. So I brought the ipod to the store and the store acknowlegd that the ipod was broken. They store send me a new Ipod and I was happy again.
    BUT NOW IT COMES:
it has happend to me again
This time I connected my ipod to a USB1 connector on my (old) laptop.
The ipod was beening recognized. I went to connect to itunes and wanted to copy some other files from the ipod.
And now I have the same hardware problem. As soon as I connect to a firewire on my pc, or any pc, the iPod FREEZES
it's not the cable, nor the PC nor the firewire adapter
How can itunes or any other program or window physically destroy my ipod.

Apple does not participate in these forums except for rare circumstances. These forums are for users.
If you want to talk to Apple, you should send them feedback or email or call them.
BTW, when you say "the iPod freezes", I don't know what you mean. An iPod doesn't "freeze". If it does, then it's the iPod's problem. A computer can't cause this problem, it's a hardware issue with the iPod itself.

  • Moving house, do I need to be in?

Got an activation date for our house move on the 30th of the month.
Will I need to be in (does an engineer need access to the new house) on that day?
Or is it all just at the exchange?
Worried now as well, as Sky are the providers at the new property and people seem to be waiting in other areas for Sky to release the line.....

unless advised otherwise you don't need to be in it will be handled at the exchange

  • Infinity fault not fixed, engineer booking system ...

    Hi,
I am just wondering if anyone else is currently in out position? Our Infinity service went down on Tuesday morning at 7.30 so I logged a fault straight away.. The DSL link is down (flashes or isnt there at all). We did all the power cycling etc at the time. I was told to wait 48 hours and every day since i have been in a loop of the help desk saying it is an exchange fault and will be fixed by 11 am, 10 am etc the next day and when it isn't i phone up to say it isnt and am told an engineer needs to call but the booking system is down and they will call back in an hour (or two) with appointment.. they never call back. the latest is that it was supposed to be up by 10 am this morning but nothing has changed. I am on the verge of cancelling the service as i feel like i am being misled as i cannot believe BT can't book engineers full stop for five days. Any suggestions for helping push this along will be gratefully received.
    Brian
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

When you ring up the tech help desk ask to be put through straight away to the complaints department to move this forward as all the help desk will do is run through that annoying script they have and NEVER listen to your problem you have and work each case with its merit.
By the sounds of things you might have one of the faulty Open Reach Modems.  We have the same problem worked fine for 8 days and then just died took 13 days to get an engineer out.  He walk straight in with a new modem in hand and swapped it out.
The fact that BT pour so much cash in to an over seas call centre with staff that are not fluent in the English language is baffling to me.  I know many friends who have walked away from them due to this matter and unresolved issues.  The capital they save by running like this is off set by the people and business they lose !!

  • To Xsan or not to Xsan... bunch of Xserve raids + fibre switch

    Hi all,
I have 4 Xserve Raids and a fully licensed Qlogic switch plus an Intel Xserve to share it all.
I went ahead and loaded Lion Server on my Xserve for the "free" Xsan which is shweet but was pondering wether I need the overhead of the Xsan?
My need is just a simple NFS share, nothing fancy.
I was thinking to share 1 Xserve Raid as a volume (striping 2 sides together) and serve the other 3 as another volume (striping 6 sides together).
Any nuggets of wisdom are very much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    - Brian

There's nothing in your post that implies XSAN is needed.
XSAN is needed if you want to connect multiple hosts to the fiber channel network - in effect, giving each host direct access to the XServe RAIDs.
Since you stated you want '... a simple NFS share', that implies that the host XServe is sharing the XServe  RAID volumes over the network, therefore XSAN isn't required.
You might get better performance by connecting the clients to the fiber channel SAN, but it doesn't sound like an issue for you.

  • Engineer 'forgot' to register the installation

    Hi all,
I have had the most stupid experience with BT imaginable... Infinity finally arrived to my area a month ago, so I arranged to get the new service with BT. An 'engineer' came to install everything (access point, Openreach router, WiFi hotspot) about 3 weeks ago, and everything worked straight away.
The funny thing started when I got a call from BT the day after, asking to rearrange the meeting with the 'engineer' as the installation couldn't be done the day after. I told them that I was at home and the guys installed everything correctly, and I was getting the Inifinity high speed already. They were surprised, but they registered this.
Two days ago, the connection has been lost. Not a surprise. I just called Openreach and they confirmed that no engineer has ever been at mine and that I never got the Inifinity connected. I tried to explain that I was there, and everything was installed, just everything they need is to re-activate from their side what they have disconnected, but no, they keep insisting that an 'engineer' needs to come to my place to check that everything is ok and activate the connection. I am really annoyed as this won't happen until March 25th...
Any way to submit a complain to OfCom or something similar for inconpetency? Can I get any compensation for the two weeks without broadband that I will have just because this guy forgot to submit the completed order?
    Thanks,
    Andres

I got my Infinity 2 installed yesterday ..it was scheduled for between 13:00-18:00 and the guy came about 14:00 and was here about an hour ...he was a bit ham fisted but got the job done .He didn't use a laptop but another piece of kit which looked like an overgrown Multimeter ( he said it cost £2K) and he connected it to the renewed Master Socket and after putting in the job details it spoke back to him and said all was OK. He did mention he had to be careful to enter MY details as otherwise he'd be checking someone elses installation.
What I did get was a voicemail message from BT to say that my equipment would be with me soon ...Err but that was almost at 18:00 hrs when that came through .
