XSAN FIBER CARD ON A QUAD G5

Guys Is there away I could use my PCI-X Fiber Channel Card on the new Quad Mac G5?
Thanks

No. It will not physically fit in the machine.
You need a PCI-Express version of the Apple Fibre Channel Card. They should be available on the Apple Store.

  • 100mbps multi-port fiber card for Sol10?

Does anyone know of a multi-port fiber card (PCI) with Solaris 10 support that supports 100Base-FX ? We have a requirement to provide 4 such ports for a customer, and are having a tough time finding such a beast. We can use either quad-port or 2 dual-port cards, but we don't have enough available PCI slots to use 4 single-port cards.
Basically, we're looking for something similar to this, but with support for Solaris 10:
    http://www.aei-it.com/hardware/fastenet/p430fx.htm
We've been informed by the vendor that these only support up to Sol 8. We're working on getting eval units in, but are wondering if anyone has used anything similar in the past?
    Thanks!
    Eric

Due to customer specification constraints, media converters/switches are unacceptable. :( First thing we thought of, too. Also, 3 of the 4 ports are connecting to 100mbps digital hardware boards via UDP, so the mixed speeds probably wouldn't work out if we were to use gigabit fiber.

  • Unsure about multiple video cards in my Quad

    Hi everyone,
I looked around the forum but I am still a little confused I guess. My question is about having 2 video cards in my G5 Quad. I just got the X1900 though I haven't installed it yet. The card in my quad right now is the GeForce 6600.
Should I remove the 6600 completely and have just the X1900 or move the 6600 to another slot and have the X1900 in the primary position?
I have two LCDs (23 and 20 inch.) I mainly use FCP and Adobe CS3 Suite.

    Hi-
If you put the x1900 in slot 1 and the 6600 in slot three, you will get the best performance out of the cards:
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/Conceptual/HWtechPCI/Articles/pci_implementation.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40003937-DontLinkElem entID58
If you are only connecting the two displays, since the x1900 has two DVI ports, you can connect both to the x1900, and just remove the 6600.
I can't say which would perform better (two cards or one) but you might experiment with both and see which you like better.
By the way, remember to connect the power to the x1900.

  • True or False?  Blackmagic Intensity Card on G5 Quads

Hi: After digging around a bit, several weeks ago I ran across a message board thread that indicated someone had successfully installed Blackmagic's Intesity card on a G5 Quad. The post claimed the Intensity card works G5 Quads, since they are PCIe capable.
However, although the G5 Quad has the newer PCIe slots, I haven't found another thread that claims as much. Can anyone confirm if this is an HDMI input option which is now available for G5/PCIe Macs?

  • 2 Xraids 1 Fiber Card

    Hi,
I wonder if you can help, I have currently 2 Servers hosting 2 seperate Xraid systems. However im about to lose the one server. I am upgrading the one Xraid Lun with new Drives and i need to copy the data back on to the new LUN on the upgraded Raid from the other Raid, there is a stock shortage of Fiber Cards, otherwise i would have used an additional card, so is there anyway for me to Connect the 1 raid with the Data (1 Volume) to the server and the new Volume to copy the data over safely ? its another 3 weeks till another fiber card will arrive and getting a fiber switch for 1 transfer of data isnt an option.
    Any Advice Please ?

The other missing part is how the arrays are configured.
With two XServe RAIDs, you actually have four separate controllers. In your current configuration this probably means two connected to Server A and two connected to Server B.
The question is how do the servers use their two arrays. If they're mirrored you could just break the mirror and mount one half on RAID 1 and one half of RAID 2 on the server to copy the data - you'd need to be careful when you rebuild the mirror, though.
If the RAIDs are striped, though, then you have a problem - you can't disconnect any of the RAIDs without losing data. In this case your only option is a second fiber channel card or a fiber channel switch so that you can connect both RAIDs to the same host.
Since you have two servers, though, can't you move the fiber channel card in the second server into the first server? At least for the duration of combining the data?
If not then your only other option is to transfer the data over the network. It'll take longer but may be the only way.

  • ATTO Fiber Card?

Our Mac has ATTO fiber cards installed in the Mac Pro, its connected to a Storage Server. Which we are running fiber as our LAN Network. Can I use the network Utility to the Ping the Server using Fiber?

It should work. I assume you don't have any other network connections being used (such as ethernet to a WAN). Regardless, you can't hurt anything by trying.

  • Fiber Card failed

    Dear Guru
Hope you may give me some information about the problem.
Our company SAP is ECC6.0 running on AIX 5.3 with oracle database.
Few day ago, the server log showed one of the fiber NIC card on our development server was failed. I already arranged the hardware vendor to come down to change the device next week, but before that, may anyone confirm with me whether the hardware key will be updated by replacing a new fiber NIC card? And do I need to reactiviate the SAP again?
    Thanks
    guodong

    Hi,
If fiber card fails then hardware vendor has to play the key role. After he replaces the card he may have to change the WWN number at the EVA side . One he was able to mount the file systems with the same data then there is no need to check at SAP side. Only thing yo have to monitor the SAP application completely. Also check the run the DB verify in DB13 for any block corruptions.

  • No fiber card + cable

hi, today i installed the XServe 2 x 2 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon along with XServe RAID 3.5TB..
1st thing i did i open the RAID Admin and created a new array with RAID 5, i noticed that initializing is so slow and its taking forever to be ready, it goes 1% about every half an hour! is this normal?!
2nd, i didnt order the Fiber card + Fiber cables with the XServe, -didnt know they are important for setting up-, and now i cant see the Drives, and not in disk utility... is there a way to format the HD's without fibers? using the ethernet?

Maybe if you explain what you're trying to do it would be easier to give you advice that way. The XRAID has two controllers - one for each side. You'll need two cables if you use both sides simultaneously - but each card has 2 ports so you only need one card per RAID box.
When you are talking about breaking the RAID into disks are you talking about making of the actual RAIDs or splitting sides into smaller slices using either LUNs or partitions?
RAID 5 is an n-1 system so a 3 disk RAID only gives you 2 disks of storage so breaking a side into a 4 disk RAID 5 and another 3 disk RAID 5 doesn't make much sense because you're losing 2 disks worth of storage. If you want the protection of RAID 5 make either a 6 or 7 disk RAID 5 and then look into slicing it or partitioning it into smaller logical Volume sizes. Another note - the more disks you use in a RAID the faster it is so it is another argument for keeping as many disks in the RAID as possible.
Whether you make a 6 or 7 disk RAID 5 is matter of choice. If you use 6 disks and a drive fails the "hot spare" will automatically be used by the RAID to rebuild the RAID. If you use all 7 disks and drive fails the RAID will not rebuild until you physically replace the drive and if another drive fails while it's waiting you loose the data from the RAID. Most people opt for the 6+1 configuration but if you want the extra 500GB and you back-up consistently the 7 drive isn't a terrible option. Because the controllers are separate you need a hot spare for each side if you want to go that route.
If the Xserve is the only machine that will directly reference the RAID then the easiest way to make volumes from a RAID is partitioning. Once the RAID is done initializing you format it (presumably HFS+ w/ journaling) and partition it into as many volumes of whatever size you want. LUN masking is more restrictive because all the volumes need to be equally sized but it allows you physically mask off LUNs if more than one computer is "seeing" the RAID directly. If slicing the RAID in half is your goal then use whichever you're comfortable with - keeping future expansion in mind.
    Hope that helps. Good luck,

  • Cheapest place to purchase a Fiber card?

Anyone know cheapest place to purchase a Fiber card PCI-E 2GB and mini Gbic's?

I picked up the 4GB card PCI-x version for $299 on eBay. I always look there first. That one will fit in all of the servers I believe. Here is a link to the one I got...

  • Is really not possible to install  a WIFI card in my Quad?

I am being told that the only way to insall a WIFI card/upgrade kit in my Quad G5 is to take it in to a certified tech. Being overseas right now limits that option. Can I not just take the screwdriver to it and follow a visual manual(link need here if you know of one) and put that puppy in there? I am of the impression that i have to remove the whole CPU unit to get behind there to the location on the mother board where it is to slot in.
Whats the real scoop- is this just being said to rack up the $ or is there some special tool that is needed or is it too delicate an operation?
    Thank you,

Hi Steve, and a Warm Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Power Mac G5 Forum!
    If your G5 is a "Late 2005" dual-core 2GHz

    then the above applies.
Ease of self-installation is mentioned at post #2 above, and here

  • Power Mac Video Capture card for G5 Quad

Can anyone direct me to where I can get a video capture card for my Power Mac G5 Quad.
I would like to directly connect my DVD player to my G5.
Can I do this and what do I need and where can I get it. Thank you for your guidance!

Canto makes a nice firewire video digitizer for under $ 200 that will handle full (non-HD) resolution video. If you already have a mini-dv camera or can find a used one cheap (maybe one where the tape transport is bad) you can connect the camera to your G5 via Firewire, and then use the camera's auxiliary video and audio inputs to connect the source you want to digitize.

  • Options for video card upgrade to quad-core G5?

What are my options? I bought the powermac quad-core G5 with the base video card (geoforce 6600); now I want to upgrade, but it seems that one cannot buy the other video cards (e.g. geoforce 7800 or quadro fx 4500) on their own, but only as a package with a new powermac. Do I have any options? The ATI X800 looks great but it is an AGP card and the pmac is PCI

So far I didn't get a card from Apple to upgrade.:-(
But on the Aperturetricks website, Scott says, that I got an upgrade.
    Don't know how.

  • HD/SD Blackmagic Capture Card for G5 Quad Power PC

    Hi,
Can someone give me some advice on buying a good, reasonably priced capture card for my G5 powerpc quad. Its still running very well and I'd like to extend its professional use for a little bit
longer as I suspect that the next incarnation of desktops is possible months away.
I'm assuming a BlackMagic card is best suited due to my limited budget but I'm open to suggestion.

You haven't said what formats you're hoping to capture, but I'd imagine one of Blackmagic's Decklink cards would work for you (Intensity Pro is not compatible with non-Intel macs).
Pay attention to the hardware requirements though: http://blackmagic-design.com/support/detail.asp?techID=76

  • Gigabit Fiber Card compatibility

Could someone tell me if the following configuration will work?
Gigabit Fiber NIC card in server connecting to a Gigabit Switch (Cisco Catalyst-6513 w/ WS-X6516-GBIC module) which connects to the primary 10/100 Switch.
    Thanks.

Yes, that will work, but make sure you have the same flavour of Gigabit fiber in the NIC and the GBIC. Usually for a server NIC it will be 1000BaseSX.

  • Graphics card for G5 Quad

Can anyone recommend a suitable second graphics card for a G5 Quad? More and more I work now with importing TV programmes and films into QT,but still need to use my VHS from time to time.My plan is to ditch my CRT monitor and move over to an LCD.That's fine for viewing a digital source from within the Mac,but how can I also hook up the VHS sop that I can use that with the LCD also?
    Thanks for any advice

I wouldn't add a second graphics card, too much demand on the PCI bus, and may cause problems with audio artifacts, we had that problem, plus horrible speed penalties. (We were using a MOTU 24i/o as well). My recommendation would be to use the firewire output to video (using a firewire device like the Canopus ADV-110) OR a card with dual display (Does yours support dual display? the ATI does) and put a scan converter on the second output. i hope that will do what you need.
