Xsan secondary MDC using all its memory

The secondary MDC, uses all its memory over about 12-24 hours (depending on use) and slows to a crawl kicking all the NFS clients. I need to reboot it to return the SAN to service.
We solved this previously by hosting the Volume on the opposite head from the MDC that was running the SmallTree Card and hosting the NFS client connections.
Two MDCs, 1 promise Vtrak tray (16tbs) running 10.6.4, 12 GBs of RAM each.
Our volume is hosted by the other MDC, (the one that uses up it's RAM) is the NFS connection for all clients.
Cujo:(12GBs)
Hosting Volume
Primary MDC
Jack: (the one running out of RAM (12GBs))
SmallTree 4 Port Card
NFS connections
Secondary MDC
Both running 10.6.4
I am getting this in /Library/Filesystems/Xsan/data/SHARE/logcvlog on the MDC hosting the volume:
(But not sure it's related.)

Additional information:
actually, the server is not releasing Inactive Memory. I had to purge the inactive mem cache to release some of the RAM. Not sure why the system is not doing it.
10 GBs (out of 12) of RAM is inactive, that doesn't seem right to me.

  • CS5 not using all available memory/CPU

I'm sure this is the opposite complaint you usually get, but for some reason AME will only sometimes use all available memory/CPU power.  I'm on an 8 core Mac Pro, and while AME will sometimes register as using ~%1,000 CPU and just blitz through videos, other times it hovers around %100 and processes at regular speed.  Right now, for example, it's using about 600 MB of memory, leaving over 3.6 GB free.  Is there any way to assure that it always runs at max speed?

There's another thread with a similar set of issues. Other than the disk subsystem, there is another possibility for the bottleneck. That is, the codecs that are used to decode the input video files may not be efficiently multithreaded. Hence the codec responsible for creating the output file, the CPU and the disk subsystem all could be lightning fast and collectively they may all be waiting for frames to be served up by the decoder. You can check whether the disk subsystem is the bottleneck by creating a RAM disk (assuming that you have enough system RAM) and both putting all input files on and writing the output files to the RAM drive.

  • Lightroom 5.3 uses all my memory. Please help!

I have been using Lightroom, since the very beginning. I love it and can't imagine working without it. However, since Lightroom 4, I have been having problems with it sucking up all my memory. I keep upgrading hoping it will get better, but it only seems to get worse. I have a macbook pro that's only 1 1/2 years old. I have plenty of memory, but as soon as I start using Lightroom, things go downhill. My only solution so far is shutting down Lightroom every half hour or so and then re-opening it. Sometimes it will slow down my computer so much that it freezes completely. I really can't work like this. I am reaching out hoping someone can help. I have optimized my Lightroom catalog. Any other suggestions? I don't have this problem with Photoshop or anything else. Thanks so much!

Hey Geoff, thanks so much for your reply! My operating system now is OS X. The files that I am using are usually on external hard drives, but I have the same problem when working on files stored on my computer.
    My other computer info:
    Processor - 2GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory - 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
I usually have browser windows and various things open and start with about 4 GB free. Whatever is free, Lightroom will just eat it up. I really appreciate any advice. It is impossible to work like this.
    Many Thanks!

  • Lion suddenly uses all available memory

It seems to happen randomly. all of a sudden I get the beachball Activity Monitor says root kernel_task
it has 4Gig mem 2.8 core 2 duo seems like it just all of a sudden it boggs down.using all memory. then after afew minutes it goes back to normal.

IF you are using Safari my guess is that is the culpirt. Open Activity Monitor and click the System Memeory tab to see what apps are using most of  your RAM. As mentioned keep a close eye on Safari.

  • My retina MBP using all its ram?

    Hello,
My first gen 15" retina MBP is almost always out of its 8GB of memory (I notice by watching activity monitor). Usually only 60 or so MB is free
This occurs with rather plain usage - Chrome web browser, itunes, word, mail open on average
    Activity Monitor lists:
    kernal_task : 909MB, 101 threads
    WindowServer : 378 MB, 6 threads
then mail, chrome, itunes, etc all taking normal amounts, 100MB each or so
Whenever I close some windows to free up memory, it is quickly refilled by I don't know what.
    Is this strange behavior?
    Thanks,
    Grant

Mavericks is designed to use RAM more efficiently than prior OSXs.  What you are observing is different from what you may have experienced but normal.  If you see green, all is good.

  • My MacBook Air keeps saying the start up disc is full...but I haven't used all the memory...help

I keep getting a message to say my start disc is full and I cant understand why. I dont have a lot of things saved on it and it affecting the operating of my laptop ie, freezing/wont download new mail.
Anyone had this issue before? Any ideas whats going on?
    Thanks

First, that's not Local Snapshots -- if there was only 200 MB free, any Local Snapshots had been deleted long before (they're automatically deleted to keep your drive below 80%).
If it starts shrinking rapidly again, see Where did my Disk Space go?
There are lots of possibilities, but your symptoms sound a bit like one (or both) of these:
    • Something going wrong sending thousands of messages to your logs (per the yellow box in the above link).  You'll need to fix whatever that is as well as delete the old log files.
    • An app (or apps) with a memory leak, making OSX use ridiculous amounts of virtual memory (not listed in the link).  While the space is shrinking, select Go > Go to Folder from a Finder menubar, then type /var/vm in the prompt.  That will produce a list of your swap files.  Those are created as needed; the first two are 67 MB, then each additional file is double the size of the previous one, so they can get pretty large.  They're deleted and started over after a Restart.
(There's probably also a sleepimage file there the same size as your installed RAM.  That's normal.)

  • POA Agent Uses Uses all memory in system then is killed.

    System OES2 SP3 latest patches

The POA is uses all the memory growing to 65% before the system is out of memory.

    Opened a SR with Novell.
Found the SLAP error, did the procedures per Tid=7009119
Start the POA everything seem okay, so added couple of user. After all the users got on the system the memory usage started to climb.
    Check the logs no errors.
Could this be caused by on of the clients????
    Any Idea would help
    Thanks

How many users on this POA? The POA can consume a large amount of RAM, but not normally. Ours is sitting at about .5GB for about 500 heavy users. The GWIA and GWINTER typically grow very fat: 2 -4 GB.
Since you have a SR open, work the problem with the engineer, if it looks like its languishing, you can always ask for an escalation.
Does this server have swap configured? A caption from top might help us to know whats what, including the line for the POA in question.

  • How do I combine an old itune library thats on an external hardrive and a newer library thats on a newer computer into 1 library and keep them on the external hard drive so I won't use up all my memory on my newer laptop

I copied an old iTunes library off my old Toshiba laptop with windows xp and put it on an external hard drive.  I have a newer Microsoft surface pro laptop with windows 8.1.   I have a small iTunes library on my newer laptop.  I want to combine the 2 libraries into 1, add newer podcasts to the combined library daily, but keep it all on my external hard drive, so I don't use all my memory on my surface pro.  I have an older ipod classic that I have all my old library on.  I love it and don't want to stop using it, but want to be able to add podcasts from my 1 library from time to time.  What I usually do is download podcasts for a few weeks then, download them to my ipod.  Haven't done any of this in about a year.  But want to start getting regular with it again.   PS  I'm not very computer savy  Thanks for any help or advice!

This article explains how to open a different library: iTunes: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one. The assumption is that the whole library was copied to the external drive from the old Toshiba laptop, not just the media. If that isn't the case make a new library on the external drive in a folder called \iTunes and move the media inside \iTunes\iTunes Media before adding it to the library.
Once iTunes is using the library on the external drive you can add any content stored on the internal drive to the library by drag & drop or by moving/copying the content into \iTunes\iTunes Media\Automatically Add to iTunes. Make sure the option under Edit > Preferences > Advanced to Copy files to the folder iTunes Media when adding to library is selected. Once complete you can delete the original copies on the internal drive.
Should your library contain duplicates after merging see this recent post on deduping.
If there are ratings, playlists, play counts, or content stored on the iPod classic and not located anywhere else then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
Ideally you should backup your library to a second drive for security. See Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy for a suggested strategy.

  • Calendar agent using all memory.

I am running a late 2012 iMac running Mavricks. This morning my computer hung. After rebooting it it hung again in a few minutes. I ran activity monitor and noticed that the calendar agent process slowing uses all the memory and then the OS starts using virutal memory on disk causing the computer to be ususable. I found an article to run off the calendar agent that fixes the issue for now.
    launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.CalendarAgent.plist
Does anyone know why this all of a sudden would happen? I have not made any changes to my system recently, I use Gmail for my email and calendar.
    Thanks!

I am using MacBook Pro 2014 Retina Display. Initially came with Mavericks and upgraded to Yosemite (10.10.2).
Had the same Problem. Calendar Agent took nearly 6 to 7 GB of the RAM and left me with 15MB ram. Got really irritated. But found this after a hard struggle. I tried the above solutions, think didn’t quite work for me.
Follow the steps you will get your problem solved.
Backup all the calendar events to your iCloud by enabling calendar in the internet accounts from system preferences. (Do this step only if you need your events to be there).
    Then open TERMINAL and type.
    chflags nohidden /Users/*******/Library
******* represents your username or the name in which your mac is started with. This name can be seen from "Macintosh HD” then “Users” then the user which you are..
After running the command then again type in TERMINAL
    chflags nohidden /Users/*******/Library/Containers
Now close the TERMINAL after running it.
Now, open finder and goto "Macintosh HD” then to “Users” then the user which you are then “Library” then “Calendars”.
In “Calendars” you have got to delete some files.
    Those are:
    Calendar Cache
    Calendar Cache- shm
    Calendar Cache- wal
    Email Cache.plist
Actually after deleting it,restarting PC solves the problem.
Sometimes you can’t delete those files because the Calendar Agent uses them and is running in background.
For that you have got to open Activity Monitor and Force Quit Calendar Agent and delete.
Restart your PC. Then open Calendar. Nothing happens and is back to normal.

  • Backupd process using too much memory, blocking up system (Yosemite)

    Hello,
Since I upgraded to Yosemite (maybe even only after I installed 10.10.1) on my Early 2009 17" MacBook Pro, after a while, a process called "backupd" is started, using all available memory, then switching to virtual memory. After a few hours, it can take more than 20 GB of virtual memory, making the MacBook Pro very slow and unresponsive. Killing the process using Activity Monitor (which can take many minutes because of the unresponsiveness) regains the used memory, and almost immediately makes the machine responsive again.
What is this "backupd" doing anyway, are there means to prevent it from running at all or to let it stop using so much memory, or might there be a bug in OS X 10.10.1?
    Cheers,
    Dirk

I did that anyway yesterday, to turn off the mobile backups, as my MBP is not so mobile anymore
Let's see if it works and if the problem is solved by it
