XSAN Server

Hello,
I currently have an XSAN Server that connects all our computers to the network. I have a external hard drive (for Archive Purpose) connected to the Server throught fire wire. The problem I am running into is sharing the External Drive so all the computers can see the external drive as well as read and write.  So essentially I would like to have the External Hard Drive show up on all the Computers instead of having to address the main computer on the server. Any thoughts?  Within the server we have multiple users and groups.  Do I have to create a new group?
Thanks

You can't do this with a FireWire drive.
FireWire doesn't support multiple hosts trying to access the same device at the same time.
If you're using FireWire then your only option is to have the host it is connected to act as a network file server to make it available over the network (so clients write to the server over the network, the server writes to disk over FireWire).

  • Xsan 3 not authenticating StorNext FX 2.2 client

I have Xsan MDC running on OSX Server 10.8.2 .... have four Mac Pro clients that are all running OK ... tried to add a Win 7 PC this weekend using StorNext FX2.2 client software .... all seemed to be going well ... the PC can see the LUNS and the StorNext File System but will not mount the RAID even though it's been allocated a Drive letter.
I can ping both machines and the PC can see the LUNS OK ... had Quantum Tech Support on the phone this afternoon and after extensive diagnostic testing (great support btw) we've come to the conclusion that the Mac MDC is not authenticating the PC for some reason and therefore won't allow the XSAN RAID to be physically mounted on the PC.
Have tried disabling the Win 7 Firewall and anti-virus software but that may still be an issue ... whenever I try to run the 'authenticate client' process I keep getting the same error message that the PC is offline or unavailable even though I can ping it and the LUNS on the PC are allocated a drive letter and the StorNext File System is running.
    Any ideas on likely cause?
    Thanks,
    Neil

Yep, the first thing we checked ... it's in the Config folder.
The Quantum support guy went through all the logs today and found an interesting error message:
I also found another error in the MDC logs related to “version mismatch”

Got me thinking ... when I create a Volume in Apple XSAN Server, I always leave the case INsensitive option switch on (enabled) .... just wondering if Win 7 can handle case INsensitive?
Could this prevent Win 7 StorNext FX 2.22 mounting the drive even though it can see the LUNS?

  • XSAN client can't connect due to 'duplicate registration'

I'm trying to connect a client machine to an Xsan server, but whenever I try to type in the registration number and save it, it comes back saying "Error while writing settings(duplicate registration)"
We were using this computer on the Xsan before with this same registration number, but we had to reinstall the OS, and now it won't accept the registration number.
None of the other machines are using the number, I went through the configuration files on all of the different machines and found no reference to this number. I'm not sure where to go from here.
Anyone know how to solve this issue?

The Xsan SN is kept locally, and so if you reinstalled it should clear it up. Perhaps trying to add it using Xsan admin on another computer would work.
Or if you tried another Xsan SN temporarily, it might solve your problem.
Log in to the ADC (developer.apple.com) and get a free account. Try the developer SN for Xsan.

    Hi.
    Well, at first.
But I moved 2x of the disks to the second controller.
So my setup as now, 2x disks on the first, and 2x on the second controller.
Make a Volume, Make a Storage Pool for the MetaData containing the disks on the first controller.
Then I make a Data Storage Pool containing the disks on the second controller.
And I get the same errors over, and over again.
What I really find interesting, is this error :
Aug 16 13:22:28 mail servermgrd: xsan: [18165/302DA0] ERROR: getfsm_processstats(MiscVol): Unable to find pid of fsm
If I do, ps -ax I cannot see any running process of "fsm"
    only "fsmpm".
Any thoughts? This is getting really really boring.
As I need to migrate 2TB into the newly bought XSAN setup.
Thanks again. And hope for a solution.

  • XSAN 2 help

I am setting up XSan 2 for a video production house. I have no previous experience setting up XSan.
    We have
    1 VTrak SAN
    1 QLogic fiber switch
    1 Cisco Switch
    1 XServe (Tiger)
    1 PowerPC G5 (Leopard)
    5 Mac Pro (Leopard)
    3 Apple Fiber Cards
    3 License of XSan 2
Question 1, if I want to use the XServe as both the XSan Server and metadata controller, is that possible? XServe is powered by Tiger.
Question 2, PowerPC G5 doesn't support the Apple Fiber cards, so if I want to use the G5 as metadata controller using only ethernet (gigabit), is that possible?
Question 3, we have only 1 switch. The IPs are assigned by a router. Is it alright to use the DHCP enabled IPs for the XSan clients? Using only one gigabit ethernet?
Question 4, we have XSan2 license for only 3 clients. If I connect other 2 clients in the network, but do not want to use XSan for them, is it alright?
I know all of them are n00b questions. But I don't want to take any risk.
    Thanks in advanced.

Question 1, if I want to use the XServe as both the XSan Server and metadata controller, is that possible? XServe is powered by Tiger.
Xsan server and metadatacontroller(MDC) are two names for the same concept. Xsan server = metadatacontroller.
Question 2, PowerPC G5 doesn't support the Apple Fiber cards, so if I want to use the G5 as metadata controller using only ethernet (gigabit), is that possible?
No, you need connection to the data by FC.
Question 3, we have only 1 switch. The IPs are assigned by a router. Is it alright to use the DHCP enabled IPs for the XSan clients? Using only one gigabit ethernet?
The MDC needs to have a fixed address. For the clients it depends how you configure. You can do this by a GUI, and by cli. From cli you can configure it to work with changing addresses. It is possible from the cli, but not recommended!
From the GUI changing addresses will give you serious trouble.
Question 4, we have XSan2 license for only 3 clients. If I connect other 2 clients in the network, but do not want to use XSan for them, is it alright?
    Yes, that's fine.
To work with xsan, you need one FC and two ethernet connections on each machine.
xsan is not trivial. You should read a lot, before you start. There are good courses to get you started as well.

  • Soundtrack project won't save

    Hi,
I've got a handful of STP files which will not save. The error message is "The document '*' could not be saved" '*' = my document.
Before that comes up, when saving normally, it says that the file cannot be saved to the original location. (we have an XSan server system) so we 'save as' to the desktop or external drive and we get the above message.
Any idea on this? I can't seem to get around it and I really need to save this work!!
    Thanks in advance.

I have since tried dividing the project in to thirds. Not sure if it is saving or not. Spinning beach ball, stalled progress bar.

  • EXS instruments fail to load

Hello, I am having problems loading all EXS instruments in Logic Pro. I have created a custom EXS instrument with my own samples, and even when i try to load basic things like the garage band "Hip-Hop Kit" drums, it takes at least 10 minutes to load the instruments. When loading my custom one, it almost always comes up with an error reading: Logical end-of-file reached during read operation ---- Result code = -39 "
Sometimes the EXS instruments, once finally loaded, won't even play their programmed samples. I don't know what the deal is, and am obviously missing something. I have tried the previous recommendation of using the project manager to expanded scan the system, then save data, and in preferences selecting the "Load Project Manager database on launch" box. Yet the issue doesn't change.
Should I tell Logic to copy EXS instruments into project folder? (when i created the project that was not selected). If so, how do i activate that option with an already-created project?
Any help is MUCH appreciated. thank you!

Thanks. I'm trying that. I should also say that my computer is connected to a 7TB Xsan Server, and though none of my files or scan paths are on it (it's actually an excluded scan path), i have a feeling it's looking for files through the entire server.

  • Audio Levels dropping while Digitizing

We're editing on 4 computers with an XSAN server using Beta SP machines as component input as well as firewire DV machines. FCP 5.1.4
My question is this. We seem to 'lose' about 5db from the machine to the computer. In other words something thats hitting about -12db on the deck will only come into the machine at -17db. It doesn't matter whether it comes from the Beta Machines through the blackmagic hub or straight into the machine via firewire.
Is there some kind of setting in the FCP program that can be changed? Our tech support doesn't seem very interested in solving this problem.
    Thanks

    thats not normal behaviour
when i record tone at -20db on source and then bring that into fcp, then the level lines up exactly at -20db as it should.
odd and otherwise inexplicable behaviours in fcp are often a good indication that it might be a good time to trash your preferences!
try FCP Rescue from http://fcprescue.andersholck.com which is a simple one trick pony tool to make that process painless

I have a small production client looking to run 1 workstation running Mac Lion 10.7.3 and two work stations running Windows7 64 bit. They will all be talking to the same storage array through 8Gb FC. What is there most cost effective way to do this?

    Thank you for your help.
The client has already made the jump to 8Gb including HBA's, switch and RAID Storage.
The other question will be if they need a seperate Mac Server to run the Meta Data or are they able to use the current Mac they are running to do this?
The Mac is a 201073 model they say with 12 Dual Core 2.66Mhz processors and 16 GB of Memory. This system is currently doing rendering. It has the XSAN Client but I understand for the solution to work they need to also run XSAN Server on a MDC.

  • Edit in place & Capture at the same time?

Anyone know if there is a problem Digitizing to a Capture scratch where there is media being used for an Edit? For example the Editor and Producer are starting to cut and more footage still needs to be digitized. Is it ok to Capture to a folder where there is linked media?
    Xsan, Server 10.5.x & FCSvr 1.1
    Thanks for any input.

Got an answer over on FCP forum. Basically, yes it is fine to digi into a directory that has linked media.

  • Import issue FCPX 10.0.6

I have seen a number issues with importing after upgrading to 10.0.6, but don't know of anyone having this issue.
I am trying to import media, mostly 5DMII footage, but am unable to navigate through my own folder structure.  I have a "Projects" folder, inside that folder, is a folder for each project I'm working on, and within those folders are more folders for audio, video, photos, graphics, etc.  The issue now, is that when I tab down the Projects folder, FCPX just lists all individual files, it does not give me folders to continue tabbing down into to find specific project media.  In fact, there are only more folders, there are no loose files within the projects folder.
When I look at the same Projects folder in Finder, this is what I should actually see:
I am working off an XSAN server, which has been totally fine and I'm not convinced that's causing this issue.
Where this issue gets funky, is that it only arise when I look in the "zProjects" folder.  At the same level as that folder, I have other folders that are unrelated to media work, however, when I tab those down, I can see the folders within them, and can tab down to any level I want.  It's only in the "zProjects" folder that I can't see folders within folders, only a giant list of all individual files.
Is anyone having this same issue?  Any suggestions?

Yes, I am totally onboard with this update in 10.0.6.  My issue is that FCPX is looking a normal folder (in this case, called zPROJECTS) and instead of showing me the folders within zPROJECTS, it is throwing the folders to the side and just showing me individual files (as can be seen in the screenshots above).
So, to elucidate, I work at a university and we recently shot some video of Family Weekend.  I created a family weekend folder, inside that is a video folder and inside that are the video files:
    XSANvolume/DIGITAL_MEDIA/zPROJECTS/2012_FAMILY_WEEKEND/VIDEO/Video File 1 of 100
Note, that inside zPROJECTS are another 40 or so folders from past and current projects we are working on.  The family weekend folder is not the only one inside zPROJECTS.
All of the footage is shot on a 5dmii, so it's all h264 .mov files, not an AVCHD folder structure (or similar format) from a memory card.  In the previous versions of FCPX, I would have said "Import Files" not "Import from camera."
However, what FCPX shows me is not the file directory above, instead it gives me the following:
    XSANvolume/DIGITAL_MEDIA/zPROJECTS/Files 1 through more than 3000
So, I can't navigate through the folder structure I created for each project we work on, I would have to sort through thousands of individual files to find what I need to import.

  • Photoshop hanging FCP 7

We have multiple MacPro's on an Apple Xsan server all loaded with 6GB ram. When switching back and forth from photoshop to FCP 7, Final Cut sometimes doesnt respond (spinning Ball) All other apps work including the finder. I have waited 5-10 mins and Final cut has returned. Seems like it could be a ram issue. It is happening on multiple systems.
    Any thoughts
    Keith

Seems like it could be a ram issue
Very hard to believe RAM is the issue. How did you arrive at this conclusion?
There was some noise a while ago about how FCP would not revive after being hidden when switching apps. Your issue could be related.

  • CLI and undocumented features ...

... or confessions of an Xsan Newbie .... OK, so I've been using Xsan for six months now and trying my hardest not to use CLI and all that tricky Unix stuff .... finally realized that CLI might be the best friend an inexperienced Xsan Administrator could have ... so question becomes .... apart from the Man pages that are installed in the Xsan server folder (is it me, or this the most difficult technical document in the world to navigate around?) and the highly comprehensive descriptions (not) of the CLI commands in the Xsan Admin Guide .... where do you find good documentation on how to use the CLI? Which Unix commands are useful for managing Xsan?
Plus, I get the feeling from reading some of the StorNext documentation that there is much more to SNFS than meets the eye or that Apple is letting on. Is there anything that covers the undocumented features of Xsan that would be easy to understand by a simpleton like me?
    Thanks,

    Hollywood-DI

    Hi Neil,
There is a 3-day stornext course which I found very usefull.
For day to day use, the cvadmin command is your friend. So I suggest with studying on the man page for it. when you want to create and change volumes, you need more commands: cvlabel, cvmkfs, cvupdatefs, cvfsck.
These manpages are actualy acurate. I can imagine to be overwhelmed with all the options. At first you need to understand the context. The mentioned course will help you with this. This is complex material. You have to dive into it. There is no shortcut.
For tuning and creating a new volume the cvfs_config manpage is usefull.
For unix I suggest a good book and a course. Commands I use frequently:
    + mount -t acfs <volname> /Volumes/<volname>
    + umount /Volumes/<volname>
+ du -hs /Volumes/<volname> | sort -nr # to see the fillers of a volume
+ df -h # to see how full the volume is
+ grep # selecting specific info from a bunch of data
+ cat # display the content of a file
    + vi/pico # unix text editors
Also, check articles from apple.com and xsanity.com. There are loads of info there.
One major part of the xsan is the FC environment. You need to study that too. Qlogic has good pdf's. Setting up the nicknames and zoning right, is a must!

  • 10.6.2 Server Xsan 2.2.1 and SNFS 3.1.2 MDC

I'm trying to connect an Xserve running 10.6.2 and Xsan 2.2.1 to a Linux MDC running StorNext 3.1.2, but Xsan can't connect to the fsmpm. I receive the following entries in system.log:
