Xserve 10.5.2 - FCserver - WebServices BANG !!! POW Wolop (Batman Style)

Well today I thought I needed a challenge - I have successfully transcoded over 25,000 clips for our mood tape - this took me the best part of two weeks as for Compressor falling over etc etc etc, Anyway decided to start WebServices on the server (so I can start a Wiki for the editors) - second I did this we have lost the Java location on all of the 10 edit Suites and office macs. ie the 192.168.0.100/FinalCutServer area ...
Anybody had issues with WebServices on the server yet ?

Server performance notwithstanding, you can do what you describe on a different port. Your URL for FCX could be //192.168.0.100/finalcutserver, whlie the wiki is at //192.168.0.100:81/. When you turned on the web services at the defaults you were detouring incoming http requests away from the web services dedicated to FCX.

Set the RAM to run at CPU IMC native speed of 1600. If that is stable, then begin the tweaking process of DRAM V., loosening of timings, and Command Rate to 2. Some CPU IMC's just can't handle 2400.

Just looked at the warranty information with an earlier version power adapter (one for PowerBooks) and it is one year. That seems to still be the standard Apple warranty for Apple branded accessories.
Call Apple, go to an Apple store or go online and get it replaced.

I have Adobe elements that came with my Canon 300D, so I do have an image resizer, however I was hoping someone had information to a resize program that worked similar to the Microsoft power toys. Simply right click the image and choose the size you wish it to be.

• UPS and 2 power supplies

Out of curiosity, what happens if only one of the two power supplies is kept on UPS and the power goes out?

What do you think will happen?
The power supply connected directly to the main power will go offline.
The power supply connected to the UPS will stay up (as will your RAID).
Your UPS will start to drain.
Ultimately, if the power stays off long enough, the UPS will be unable to sustain sufficient voltage and the second power supply will go offline, bringing down your RAID.
Is that what you mean?
Note that the XServe RAID can have a fairly significant power draw. You need to make sure your UPS is sized sufficiently for your expected runtime.

• My Xserve does not wake up every Saturday from a cold start / cold boot up.

Hello, everyone,
This is my first time using this Apple Discussions Forum here and so hope any expert out there who can solve my problem, I'd deeply appreciated. Basically the problem is like this.
I configured Xserve to
wake up 8:50 am wake up every morning.
shut down system 1:00 am every morning.
There are two places to be configured here:
1. System Preferences' Energy Saver
2. Workgroup Manager>Computer List>Preferences> Schedules>Mac OS X Server.
The time schedules in those two places are ensured to be at the same setting.
(does anyone know which is the main one?)
Furthermore,
I have a clock timer set to 2:00 am to shut down the main power supply to the Xserve. And so,
Power Supply timer provides power to Xserve:
8:40 am every morning (before scheduled Xserve waking up time, 8:50 am)
Power supply cut down the power to Xserve:
2:00 am every morning (after scheduled Xserve shutting down time, 1:00 am)
Why am I doing this? Because I think it is good for Xserve's power supply fan. If I let Xserve's power supply run 24/7 for years, the motor is wearing down soon. It also saves some energy for me.
Normally the power supply would first provides the power to Xserve before Xserve would boot up as scheduled.
Now, this setting works pretty well for me for months until recently.
My Xserve will not boot up every Saturday morning as scheduled. I cannot figure out why it does this weird behavior.
I tried to search forums and google many many places, and find no solution.
Here are a list of things I have tried:
I changed 2 new PRAM battery twice in one month.
I have tried to reset SMC.
I have tried to reset PRAM.
I tried to reset PRAM before SMC reset. I also tried to reset SMC before PRAM reset.
Worse yet, on Saturday morning, Xserve is like in a deep coma, I tried to remotely boot it up by LOM, it does not even respond to my LOM waking up call. It is like a naughty kid refusing to wake up in the Saturday morning. The only way to wake it up is that I I have to take a long walk and physically go to my Xserve and hold the power button for 5 seconds and press it again and so it wakes up. Note that if I just press the power button once, it does not boot up neither. Why?
Then the next day, it is normal again for another 6 days until next Saturday. I could not figure out why it does this. Why just Saturday? Why not Sunday or any other day between Monday to Friday?
Funny and strange behavior.
The problem is periodic and so I believe it has something to do with the software and/or the PRAM caching the alarm time, which may influence the SMC setting.
Note: the Apple website says SMC controls the waking time while Apple manual also says PRAM is responsible for alarm clock.
I would normally
shut down system
unplug the cable
hold the power button for 5 seconds and let it go
plug back the power cable.
Xserve should either boot up by itself or stay cold for me to boot up.
note: the manual just say unplug the cable for 5 sec but did not say hold the power button for 5 second, and I think that is wrong; you have indeed have to hold the power button for 5 seconds as the Apple website said. Otherwise when I cut down power supply every day, my SMC is reset by itself every day.
I have a voltage regulator before my Xserve's power supply and so the voltage is very stable.
Any Xserve experts out there has the same problem like I do??

Hi, MrHoffman , I couldn't agree more with your view point. Xserve not only reacts poorly to sudden power shortage, its HDDs may also get hurt during sudden power removal. Therefore, I was extremely careful when resetting SMC. Bad SMC procedure can hurt HDD.
MrHoffman , my problem is not totally solved and you knew I will come back, right? I do accidentally find your blog. Is the site yours?

Your blog and threads from here has inspired me to investigate in the direction on LOM issue. Thank you.

I've come to narrow down the problem and suspect the root cause is LOM bug. Basically this is what happens in the last 4 days.
After nearly 3 weeks of monitoring my Xserve, it was running perfectly normal until 4 days ago. Suddenly, my Xserve fails to wake up for 4 days in a row. I almost made it---a perfect run for 1 month without ever having to reset SMC once! This time, the failed waking-up event took place during normal weekdays. So it is still a mystery to me that why my Xserve previously fails to wake up only on Saturday (perhaps, hackers prefer Saturday because that's when they are free?---just kidding). However, at least I now know the problem can take place at anytime.
Maybe I should first list my Xserve's specification.
Xserve Late 2006 Model
2.0 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
8G RAM
Mac OS X Leopard Server 10.5.8 (Build 9L34)
Boot ROM: XS11.0080.B01
LOM version: 1.2.8
I am only using en0 for both LAN and LOM.
So since I was not able to wake up my Xserve remotely by LOM, it is intuitive to check Server Monitor on Xserve side.
On my Xserve side, I had
Name: Nothing (it was localhost)
IP Address: 127.0.0.1
Status Summary: Software is not installed properly on server.
At this point, I was wondering where did my Status Summary go? So as an incentive move, I delete the 127.0.0.1 from Server Monitor list and go to >Server Monitor>Server>Configure Local Machine, trying to re-add the localhost server back to Server Monitor list. Then it is when all of the troubles occur.
The Server Monitor simply hangs there. When check Finder>Force Quit Applications, I see Server Monitor (not responding).
So I was questioning myself that if this failed waking-up event is a software issue or a hardware sensor issue. Before answering to this question, as a good habit, let me post my log file.

• Operating inside an Xserve is a joy

I just finished installing a RAID card into one of our Intel-based Xserves and the engineering of the Xserve is just amazing. The way power supplies and drives just slide out then right back in with just the right amount of oomph is cool. Installing the RAID card is complicated, you have to remove a lot of bits but Apple clearly thought long and hard about not only how to do so easily but they also documented it with care. The instruction booklet is well thought out and offers helpful tips along the way.
My only issues were..
- The small cable between the power distribution board and the back plane was really hard to disconnect, I had to get a very narrow flathead screwdriver to wedge in and pry the connector loose.
- The instructions say to go to http://www.apple.com/server/documentation/ to download the "RAID Utility User's Guide", but the guide is in fact not there. I did a Google search and was able to find the user guide here.
Creating the RAID set and getting everything going was super-easy, the RAID Utility is very non-threatening and was a snap.
So now I'm off to reinstall my OS and apps, thank you Apple for making such a beautiful computer.
I know I make it sound like I just made love to some silicon but I just had to share my impressedness.

Your title mentions a rebooting Xserve, but your text does not.
How hot did the Xserve and the other boxes get when the air conditioning failed?
Where is the vanishing file stored? On the Xserve, or on the client box? (That file structure or that disk or that host seems suspect.)
It's also feasible to have something deleting that file erroneously. Whether that's the user issuing an rm or cleaning up a directory they should not, or whether a rogue administrative script of some sort is deleting the file. But it's also possible to have a creeping disk failure, or thermally-triggered host or memory or I/O hardware failures.
If your Xserve is rebooting frequently and if the file is disappearing, then I'd guess that you'll need to replace a disk here.
Regardless, ensure that your archives are operational and that you have good copies of your disk data on a disk outside the room with the failed air conditioning; on a disk that didn't get cooked when the AC failed.
The first step would be to run the Xserve hardware diagnostics, and to review the contents of the failing box's log files. It would also seem reasonable to call in whomever services your hardware for a look at the gear, too.

• Xserve G5 unexpectedly shut down

Hi there,
We are still using an old Apple Xserve G5 for minor backup jobs. So far the Xserve is running very reliable. A year ago the Xserve unexpectedly
shut down for numerous times. As I found out the guys from the colocation connected the Xserve with a wrong port on their power reset system. So, as
soon as another colocation client initiated a power reset, a shutdown was forced on my Xserve.
Problem: A couple of days ago this kind of behavior reoccurred. My remote card showed me no display signal. So the Xserve has been completely
shutdown. The system.log doesn't show me any useful entries like localhost kernel[0]: ApplePMU::PMU forced shutdown. There are no entries before the system startup logfile entries. This time the server is attached to correct power supply unit and the power supply is working normally.
Unfortunately my ISP says that there were no maintenance on the colocationrack or any kind of power outage during this timeframe. I am still not sure
about that…
Anyone have seen this error on those old Xserve models?
Thanks

3 times in last few days, while digitizing HDV
footage in FCP 5.1via FWire400 - the g5 has
unexpectedly SHUT DOWN. There's no Kernal Panic
warning - the system just flat shuts off as if the
power was pulled.
Have you tried copying the footage to the external SATA hard drives instead? I have had all sorts of problems with FireWire enclosures no longer working properly. If it works with the SATA setup you will know its probably the FW drive or its enclosure.
The process of elimination goes on,
Michael

• XServe Noob Requesting Help

I've been using Macs for about 15 years, but I have never used a Mac server, so hopefully my questions aren't too dumb.
I am working on a project that requires about five Mac users to simultaneously access a catalog of about 250,000 JPGs, each of which are roughly 10MB in size. We just need each user to be able to copy the files or open them directly into Photoshop. My concern is the amount of storage needed and of course the speed with which these users can access the files. Right now we have them on four 1TB HD's. Where do I start with this? Is this something an XServe could help with?
Thanks,
R~

In no particular order...
Tossing 10 MB files around is going to involve your network and your NICs and your switches. For purposes of comparison, an hour of HD video (uncompressed) is about 8 GB. 10 MB isn't all that big in comparison, but it's still decent-sized files.
Cat5e 350 MHz and Cat 6 wiring both support Gigabit. Different vendors test and will rate their Cat 5e components and cables for different speeds, and at least one bunch offers a 350 MHz rating and is fully rated for Gigabit. On shorter runs, some network vendors permit four-pair Cat 5.
Existing network installations and existing wiring may or may not even meet Cat n-1 or n-2 ratings, however. And flaky cabling can be tough to track down.
Xserve has dual Gigabit links. Do your other Mac client boxes have Gigabit?
As for your storage, if you're working with "just" one Xserve for at least the near future, you could look to a Fibre Channel SAN, or you can also look to use a SAS or SATA connection off the Xserve, and directly connect the storage to the server. Direct-attached storage (DAS) is generally less expensive than SAN storage.
As for DAS choices, the (add-on; optional) SAS and SATA disk interfaces are very fast; I'd not tend to look to hang storage off the slower links available off the Xserve. Xserve does not provide dual- or multi-host storage access, save via FC SAN and related software. So DAS doesn't scale as well; it's single-host.
Sonnet Technologies offers various of DAS gear, as do other vendors. Atto and its I/O controllers sees regular recommendations, too.
Do look at both RAID and at archival processing. Having a terabyte drive fail can ruin your whole day, if you're not running RAID. (Having two spindles fail can ruin your whole RAID-5, but I digress.) Erroneously deleting a critical file can be just as bad, if you don't have an archive available. (RAID doesn't help protect you against a valid -- but unintended -- file delete.)
Mac OS X Server and servers in general are (can be) more involved to manage. Servers serve clients; they inherently do and provide more. So there are (far) more knobs to manage, depending on how many services you want to enable.
APC SmartUPS or an analogous UPS device can be connected to Xserve via USB, and can handle self-power-down and such. (I usually prefer to call these battery widgets LIPS, as in "Less-Interruptible Power Supplies".)
As for another alternative for your stated requirements, you could conceivably use several NAS devices. This is a low-cost solution, though there are (also) fewer features and capabilities here.
Another matter that can arise here is controlling access to shared storage; Subversion or Git or such can be used to coordinate who is accessing what, and to track who modified what. Particularly as server configurations and file counts and client counts scale up, these command and control and coordination and change-tracking aspects can become very important.
Depending on your investment, you might want to bring somebody in to assist you with this process. Your first server will be a learning experience, and the assistance of somebody that has been through this process before can often help you here.

• Xserves DOA after move

Yikes...after moving our small cluster, 7 of our 10 Xserves are completely dead.
Hitting the power switch on these systems does absolutely nothing...no LED or fan or anything.
Problem is the power supplies...we swapped power supplies with a working box and it comes up fine.
Anybody experience anything like this before?
Any help greatly appreciated!
THANXS,
amb
xserve Mac OS X (10.4.3)

So now it's time to get busy.
"Problem is the power supplies". In troubleshooting, I would venture that you also installed a suspected bad supply into a known working XServe to verify deadness?
If it is in fact the power supplies, then I would venture another guess that your incoming power is somehow different. Are you in a facility that produces it's own power? I have seen such facilities change incoming frequency which will sometimes wreac havoc. Has the line voltage changed? Sometimes incoming power can fluctuate wildly if not somehow mitigated. If you are on UPS's have you looked at the incoming power with a scope to see if the waveforms are correct? Is it possible that the hot and neutral lines have been reversed? Have you switched from 110 to 220 and perhaps the failed supplies are not rated to handle the change?
Do you have an adequate grounding scheme? Have you checked your outlet grounds?
Are all of the power supplies the same? Are there ratings on tags or anything else on the individual supplies to indicate the rating?
Something killed those supplies. You do not mention whether you have verified the integrity of your infrastructure. I would start there. I wouldn't point any fingers because facilities people hate that. But I can't believe that you would take a 70% failure rate on the supplies through a physical move.
I'll keep chewing on this.
Luck-

• Server monitor : my turn

Like other people, i would like to manage my xserve remotely (like the advertisement promise).
===
configuration :
* xserve 1.1
* os server 10.4.10 (8R2218b)
* LOM Revision 1.2.7
* only one ethernet port used,
* in the etc/hostconfig, the hostname is -AUTOMATIC-
* i did not configure the LOM initially (because i did'nt ask for a specific ip adress dedicated for LOM at this time). My provider gave me then a specific adress for LOM on the same subnet.
* dns and reverse dns for the server and LOM are configured by the provider and work fine,
* I configured the LOM like 'defor' advised in his Aug 22, 2007 post in
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=940740&tstart=0
* I did shutdown/disconnect/reconnect power/power on.
===
Problems are :
1) malfunction of server monitor localy (via vnc)
Server Monitor shows Name = localhost, IP=127.0.01 : is it ok ? .
It gives informations about the hardware but :
= i cannot write email adresses into the "edit notification panel". The "Add" button remains grey.
= the "restart button" doesn't work... "Failed to contact server".
2) no remote server monitor.
From my Mac book Pro (localized French)
I notice that in the list : 'Nom' is empty and 'Adress IP' is correct (writing the IP or the name) and the status remains 'Attente de reponse'
3) ipmitool
ipmitool -U [myLOMadminaccount] -H [LOMIP] chassis power status
ask for password,
wait 3 seconds and return nothing (the prompt)...the same for others commands
but "sudo ipmitool -v -v user list 1" gives well the 2 accounts (1 ADMINISTRATOR, 1 USER)
Thanks in advance for your help.

Happy news from my system :
I went to the data center yesterday to try different configurations of LOM but first applied the Xserve Firmware Update 1.0.
A "power off/disconnect power cord (and ethernet cable, why, not ?) dance " and bingo :
1) Server monitor on my MacBook connects to the xserve,
2) I can add an email notification,
3) i can restart the xserve from my laptop.
But... it's not complete...
The history log shows (translating from french) every x minutes : three times 'unable to contact the server' then 'connection lost' then, after few seconds the update time is refreshed as the elapse live time of the xserve in the "infos" panel :
Is-it a real update or a fake ?
To be sure (silly question ?), is it possible to simulate a xserve problem in the scope of server monitor (and test the notification by email) ?
Admin server has the same problem : connection lost after x minutes

• Problems with server monitor

Hi all,
2 days ago, I cant connect to my xserve via Server Monitor ... and I dont know why. Via server admin I dont have any problem. The message is the following:
"Waiting for response" ....
I see the following web:
http://www.afp548.com/article.php?story=20070211101829496&query=lights%2Bout%2Bm anagement
Is useful this command?
Is there any manner to restart the LOM Interface without power off the xserve?

I've seen that happen once or twice, when the Xserve LOM got confused and/or the daemon became confused.
In the immortal words of the IT Crowd — "Have You Tried Turning It Off And On Again?" I've cleared that by shutting down Xserve entirely, removing grid power for 30+ seconds — it's that power removal which triggers the complete LOM reset, the physical disconnection of Xserve from the grid power — and then re-connecting and re-powering and rebooting the Xserve. If Xserve isn't physically disconnected from grid power, the LOM retains power.
Here are the LOM setup details. There are a couple of related threads around, as well; here's one.
You may alread be aware of this, but if you're using Server Monitor directly from the local Xserve system, you must use the local connection path and not the network path, too.

• Why does raid array not mount?

Set-up: (Equipment was Purchased NEW July 2004)
Xserve: running OSX Server version: 10.3.9
Xserve Raid Box with both arrays using Raid-5:
Array One has Five 250GB ADM (this side works and mounts fine-NO Problems)
Array Two has Four 250GB ADM (this side DOES NOT mount) Our name for this Array/volume is: "RAID2RIGHTSIDE"
We've been using both sides (array 1 & 2) for years with no trouble. Sever locked-up last week and was shut-down, since then Array Two will not mount.
Currently I have all normal green lights (front and back of Xserve Raid Unit)
Disk Utillites 10.4.4: We can see the Array Two from within DU, though the name of the volume is gray/dimmed
Raid-Admin version 1.5.1: shows Array Two IS ON-LINE (all green lights too)
Things I tried-MULTIPLE Times
-Shut-down Xserve & Xserve Raid Unit and disconnect power and Batteries, waited more than 10-mins
-Verified and Repaired Array Two using Disk Utilities version 10.4.4
-Xserve Raid Unit: Removed all cables, Batteries, Power supplies, Fiber Boards, and other board in back
-Xserve Raid Unit: Removed and reset ADMs
-Vacummed dust - all of above
Any ideas why Array Two (RAID2RIGHTSIDE) will not mount? Your suggestions are appreiciated.
Thank you for reading this.
