XServe (2008) KVM issue

Hi all, I am having a very strange issue with my Xserve and I am completely stumped as to what it could be.
I recently purchased a Dell KVM and connected it up to all my servers and the only one that seems to be having issues is my XServe. No mouse or keyboard input is detected from the server and I cannot seem to kickstart it in anyway.
All the cables are using a PS/2 socket and of course because the server does not come with those plugs I have purchased a PS/2 to USB adaptor.
The weird thing is when I connected the adpator the first time I got the "Keyboard not recognised" screen up and was able to use the mouse still. Now a day or so after using it I cannot seem to control the mac server at all, I can still remote into it from my admin imac but that is all.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the issue may be, its a very strange one and I cant seem to get my head around it.
Oh and before I forget to mention as well, both the keyboard and mouse are actually detected by the mac server and they are currently noted as a generic keyboard/mouse in system profiler.

Hey Matt, we run a KVM that controls 12 Xserve's. Our KVM does the same thing the first time we plug it in. But after that log in and then set it to generic in keyboard settings. After that it should be ok.
But you are saying that after being able to use the mouse and keyboard that latter you still can not control it with the KVM?

  • Has anyone downgraded an xserve 2008 to os x 10.6?

I am wondering if anyone has successfully downgraded an xserve 2008 from Lion, Mtn Lion or Mavericks back to Snow Leopard Server os x 10.6? What was your reason? What steps did you take? Did it solve any problems or create new ones? Is Apple still releasing security patches for 10.6 server such as the recent SSL/TLS security problem?

Yes I've done this a number of times and the reasons were mostly for the customer's benefit - (I don't like the way it looks etc). Never solved any problems as there were none in the first place and neither did it create any new ones. I've not seen any security updates for 10.6 for a while now (September 2013 was the last one I think?) although with Apple you never know?
There is a support article listing information about their Security Updates you may find more helpful?
    Apple security updates
PS: I've noticed you've replied to a number of posts I've also replied to. Unfortunately you've made the reply to me rather than the OP. It's not that important but for reasons of clarity it's best your reply is for the OP rather than other contributors. Thanks!

  • Any particular reason why Apple has dropped XServe 2008 from being supported under 10.8 Server?

I work for a large Education Institution and manage a 2008 XServe running 10.6.8 to service the Apple fleet with Apple Software Updates locally within the organisation. Now 10.8 Client is released I find that for me to service updates to 10.8 I need to be running 10.8 Server. So I head off to the App Store and find that 10.8 server will only run on XServe's 2009 or above.
Typical Apple - we are open and encourage freedom and expression but purchase Apple and we have you locked in for life. Very disappointed.
So now I have to fork out more $$$ to get another Mac to be able to run 10.8 Server so I can service 10.8 updates to my Apple fleet.
If anyone knows a way around this little issue please let me know.
Apple - very disappointed - yet again.
    Cheers - Paul

    Hi.
There is a workaround to make the 2008 XServe work on Mountain Lion, and i have a 2008 XServe running Mountain Lion Server quite happily. It involves hacking the platformsupport.plist file in the Mountain Lion installer, and then afterward copying across the Lion drivers for the ATI X1300 graphics card. The only downside appears to be that while the drivers work, the graphics are a little sluggish and Apple Remote Desktop is a little sluggish too.  Though to keep a £3000 server running, that is a small price to pay for me, especially as most people who use XServes don't even have monitors plugged into them anyway! I've also not managed to get the old Server Monitor app to work, so i'm having to use iStat to monitor fans, disk activity and such.
Here is the thread on Macrumors with all the details.
Though i'm sure i don't need to tell you that as it's unsupported, think twice and do a lot of testing before applying this to a production server in the future. Also be wary how future updates may stop it from working!

Do a thread search for XServe for XServe specific info.

  • Crystal Server 2008 authentication issue

I have installed Crystal Server 2008 v1 on Windows Server 2008 64 bit, IIS 7 using AD authentication (not SSO).
IIS has been configured to accept anonymous connections. If I run .net Infoview on the server it is fine, but as soon as I connect from a client I can authenticate and log onto Infoview, but within Infoview I am continually prompted by Windows to authenticate to the server and I cannot run any reports - nothing I put in there works.
I have been running BOE XI on Server 2003 32 bit without any such issues at all.
Could comeone pls point me in the right direction
    Thanks

solved issue by activating anonymous authentication on default web site and propogating down to all the web sites under the default site...

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 issues on OVS 3

I've been trying to get Windows Server 2008 R2 to work on OVS3 and been having issues.
First I tried to copy a working VM from OVS2 and it seemed to work, but it would crash whenever intensive I/O happened. I installed the OVS3 PVM drivers, hoping that would fix it, but it didn't. I moved it over to another server, thinking maybe it was a hardware issue. No luck there.
I also tried a fresh install. It boots up and when it starts to unpack the install files the VM reboots. I tried this with an NFS repository and on local disk with the same result.
Has anyone successfully installed Win2K8 Server on OVM3? Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Jim

Both Mem and Max Mem were set to 2048 mb, so I figured it was fine. But I changed them both to 4096 mb and now it's working. Odd.
Both the copied VM and the fresh install are working.
    Thanks.

  • Macbook Pro Late 2008 Boot Issue

    Hello All!
So I have an issue i would like to throw into the ring and see if I get any responses I have not thought of yet. Let me give you a quick backstory to my recent macbook adventures.... I will start with a quick prelude story.
    Chapter One:
Purchased a used Macbook Pro, Late 2008 2.53ghz, 4gb DDR3 ram with no charger off ebay. And yes, I should know better. But honestly, it only had a cracked screen but still worked perfectly connected to an external monitor and i could not pass on the price of it.
    Chapter Two:
After recieving my purchase, I determined that it was just a cracked cover over the LCD screen which is easily replaced, but the backlight was out on the LCD. So i ordered a new LCD. The new LCD did not fix my issue, which then pointed me to a problem on the motherboard. I then sent it out and had it repaired.
    Chapter Three:
Upon recieving my newly repaired macbook, I installed a new SSD drive, battery and replaced the screen cover for the newly installed LCD. It looks Fantastic if I do say so myself! I then proceded to install lion and I have a perfect running Macbook Pro for less than 700 bucks after all was said and done.
    Chapter Four:
Now, at this point you should know why I bought it... I use it for djing. That is it. There is nothing else on this. No apps, programs, or scripts. It has an updated lion OS on it and my serato itch Djing software. There isnt even any music on it as i store that on an external 3T WD elements drive. (I only installed an 80gb SSD for the OS system). Unfortunately i have had some instances where the Mac Pro has just shut down completely while im spinning! Not good for business!
    Chapter Five:
Over the course of the last year I have noticed some things happening. Longer than normal boot times (especially since it has an SSD in it this seems wierd to me) and crashing of the Itch software while trying to analyze music or just not closing itch at all when im done playing a show and having to press and hold the power button to turn off the mac. Now for the kicker... Unbeknowst to me, apparently you cant use a 65W charger on a macbook that requires an 85W charger, this i just recently learned. The charger i was using was a 65W from a white 13 inch macbook 2006. I just recently aquired the 85W charger.
This brings us to the present.....
Here is the issue. I was analyzing my music files using itch, when suddenly & randomly one of the 2 analyzing indicators would just stop analyzing the track it was on... This leaves only one analyzer bar going and the other just stuck where it is (16000 songs will take awhile with only one analyzer going). If i stop analyzing and restart it, it picks up where it left off and continues for a bit and stops again, but its never the same track or same length of time before it stops analyzing. Now I have tried this with both Lion and Snow Leopard (the white macbook 2006 has snow) and it appears to happen with either OS.
So I decided to install Snow on my Mac Pro 2008. For some reason, and I dont know why, it would not let me install snow to the partion I made on the drive. The disc would just keep rebooting the Mac pro over and over again. I know for a fact that snow works because I took the drive out of the white Macbook 2006 and put it into the Mac Pro 2008. Booted right up.
So, I have re-installed itch on lion... Still has the same problem with lion.
I have restored a copy of snow to the partioned hard drive of my Mac Pro 2008 from my white macbook 2006. This seems to be the only way to do this if i want snow on my Mac Pro 2008 since it won't boot Snow from disc or USB. Installed a new copy of itch, still the same problem.
So my question is this.... Is it hardware or software?
And to stop those from putting the obvious, I have done all the PVRAM, SMC etc resets!! I am not some 12yr old trying to make daddys computer work again because i used it like i shouldn't have. Im looking for something besides the obvious!
Sorry, but I felt the entire story needed to be told in order to get the responses I'm looking for....
And thanks for taking the time to read about my issues! Hopefully someone can point me in the direction I need to go to get this to stop doing what it's doing. I will be more than happy to answer any and all questions concerning this issue as best I can.

The heat generated may be a function of what you are doing on the Internet.   Watching videos will stress the CPU/GPU and create heat and result in faster fan speeds.
First try a SMC and PRAM resets:

  • MacBook Pro 2008 display issue (see the photo)

As you can see in the picture below, my 15" MBP Early 2008 started to experience this kind of issue. Sometimes it goes away if I close the lid or with a restart. I've already tried the PRAM reset with no long-term results.
My Mac had the nvidia 8600M GT issue so I got the logic board replaced. At the Apple Store the technician said this problem has nothing to do with the video card... maybe the display? Anyway, I'd like to have your opinion about this and some possible solutions.
    Thank you!

What you've pictured is a disaply backlight LED problem — it looks as though half of yours aren't lit. They're integrated into the LCD panel, and this issue is not related in any way to the replacement of your logic board. You may want to reset your computer's SMC and see whether that resolves the problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If it doesn't, I'm afraid you're in for another repair, and this one will be on your dime unless you still have a little AppleCare coverage left.

  • MacBook Pro 2008 Late issues

    Sigh! My MacBook Pro
    Hi Guys
I have a Late 2008 MacBook Pro(Uni body). Friday my machine decided its taking a long weekend and just froze up. I reboot my machine and waited for a while for it to boot. It got to the login screen where I normaly type my password in and login. The keyboard and track pad was not responding at all. Then after about 2 or 3mins the track pad started working in the sence that the mouse pointer moved around but no click function. Keyboard and track pad starts working after about 12 - 15 mins if you just leave it. I manage to login and notice that the CPU usage on CPU 1 is at 100% then it dropped then CPU 2 went to 100% then it dropped then both went to 100% and my machine froze. No service running in the backgroud that I could pickup that's using so much CPU at one time. Strange..
Then I decided to try and reinstall my machine and hopefully that would sort the problem out. Not so! Reinstalled the machine and at the end of the installation it gives you a error "Installation Failed - Could not set Machintosh HD as the boot drive". Mmm..
So then I just reboot my machine and held down the "alt" key to see if I can see my boot hard drive. Sees the drive. I select the drive and it starts to boot. The Apple logo comes up with the spinning wheel and after some time the wheel just freezes. It manage to go past the Apple screen and actually get to where you setup your account info but the screen was all dimed for some reason and the machine was very slow.
After that I just gave up and took it in this morning to the service center for them to have a look at. I think its something on the Logicboard the went all bonkers. Hopefully they can get it srted out and I can work again...
    orginal post - http://appleyeti.co.za/showthread.php?14-Sigh-My-MacBook-Pro

I had this same issue until a few minutes ago -- takes longer than usual to start up, but when I finally got my desktop, even though I could move the arrow around, everything was unresponsive. My keyboard was not accepting key commands, but oddly enough the transparent audio output symbol would show up when I press F11/F12, although it was crossed out indicating that there was no device.
I rebooted, but same issue, as well as with a guest user account. Booted in safe mode and turned my dock hiding off (to show dock) - turned hiding just the other day for the heck of it but haven't rebooted until I attempted just now - and I then did what you suggested and held down "D" upon rebooting and everything's back to normal.
Not sure if it was holding down "D" or turning hiding off, but all seems well now. I know the dock is a kind of background process in itself so maybe there was a bug but that shouldn't explain the audio problem.
I don't know if this helps, but that's my story for today.

  • Xcelsius 2008 - Known Issues (Installation)

    AA: Area Affected
    PD: Problem Description
    WA: WorkAround
AA: Installing QAAWS from BOE Client
PD: The Query As A Web Service (QAAWS) application has been combined with the BOE XI 3 BusinessObjects Client application. It was previously a separate application.
This means that to use BOE XI 3 QAAWS with Xcelsius 2008, you must download the BOE XI 3 BusinessObject Client from the Business Objects Support site and install it on your client machine.
WA: To install QAAWS download the BOE XI 3 BusinessObjects Client. You may or may not have access to this download based on the type of licensing agreement you have with Business Objects. Note that the BOE XI 3 BusinessObject client is about 600MB in size.
AA: Installing Xcelsius 2008 when a higher version of the Adobe Flash Player exists
PD: The Xcelsius 2008 installer will install a version of the Adobe Flash Player. If you have previously installed a higher version of the Flash player, you will get a warning message from the Xcelsius 2008 installer.
WA: You can ignore this warning message. Your newer version of the Flash Player will not be changed.
AA: Installing Xcelsius 2008 with other older BOE products.
PD: After installing Xcelsius 2008 on a machine, some other older BOE products on the same machine stop working (eg. WebI Report Server, BOE XIR2)
WA: Many BOE products share the same installer, as a result installing Xcelsius 2008 on the same machine other older products changes the default install folder to the newer BOE folder. For example with BOE XIR2 it changes the default BOE install directory to change to BOE XI 3 folder.
    C:\program files\business objects\businessobjects enterprise 11.5\" is changed to
    C:\program files\business objects\businessobjects enterprise 12\"
The workaround is to manually edit the registry and change the key folder name back to its previous name.
Use regedit to view the folder name in the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Business Objects/Enterprise/InstallRoot/Path".
Double-click on path and change the Value data. In most cases the folder name is C:\program files\business objects\businessobjects enterprise 11.5\
Note: please back up your registry before making any changes.
AA: Uninstalling Live Office XI 3 from a machine with Xcelsius 2008
PD: If you uninstall Live Office XI3 on a machine with Xcelsius 2008 also installed, the Xcelsius Keycode Expiry dialog box (License manager) pops up asking for the Xcelsius Keycode.
WA: The Xcelsius keycode must be entered again to re-enable Xcelsius.
AA: Installing Xcelsius with Office XP
PD: Currently installing Xcelsius 2008 with Office XP is not supported due to a bug. Use Office 2003 or Office 2007 instead. If Office XP must be used see the workaround.
WA: As a workaround to the issue of Xcelsius 2008 not installing with Office XP, users can manually add a registry key to enable installation. Please make a backup copy of the registry before making any changes.
    1. Go to Start > Run. Start the registry editor by entering 'regedit'.
    2. Select the folder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and navigate to \Software\Microsoft\Office\
    3. Create an 11.0 folder, if it doesn't exist, by selecting Edit > New > Key from the menu.
    4. Create a subfolder called PowerPoint
    5. Create a subfolder under PowerPoint called InstallRoot
You should now have the folder structure listed below:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\PowerPoint\InstallRoot
    6. From the InstallRoot folder create a string value called "Path" by selecting Edit > New > String Value
    7. Select the newly created Path value and select Edit > Modify.
    8. Under the Value Data field enter "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\"
    9. Click OK.
    10. Exit the registry editor.
    11. Reboot your machine.
You should now be able to install Xcelsius 2008.
AA: Creating a Web Part for SharePoint Portal Server 2007
PD: The current Xcelsius Web Part installer Setup.exe does not work with SharePoint Portal Server 2007.
Note: Sharepoint Portal 2003 is supported.
WA: You can manually install the web part to use with Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2007. Microsoft does not provide a mechanism to build a Web Part installer for SharePoint 2007. For instruction on manual installation see the Xcelsius Support website. (see follow up post below)

The current Xcelsius Web Part installer Setup.exe does not work with SharePoint 2007 (Windows SharePoint Services 3.0). Here is the workaround to install Web Part in SharePoint 2007 manually.
The easiest way to install a web part in SharePoint is to add the web part assemblies to Global Assembly Cache. To do so:
    1. Download and unzip the attached Xwp.zip. Drag Xwp.dll and ICSharpCode.SharpZipLib.dll into C:\WINDOWS\assembly folder on the machine running SharePoint 2007.
    2. Open web.config file located in the root of a Windows SharePoint Service 3.0 Web Application directory with Notepad. Normally, the physical location of the default WSS 3.0 Web Application root is C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\80.
[Click here for more information on how to Find the Web Application Root|http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms474356.aspx].
    3. Insert the following <SafeControl> tag between <SafeControls> and </SafeControls>.
    <SafeControl Assembly="Xwp, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=7e58495f1a9ea430"
    Namespace="CrystalXcelsius.SharePoint.WebParts" TypeName="*" Safe="True" />
    4. In SharePoint Portal Site Home page, from Site Actions drop-down menu, go to Site Settings->Modify All Site Settings. Click Web Parts under Galleries to open Web Part Gallery Page. Click New to open New Web Parts page. Check CrystalXcelsius.SharePoint.WebParts.Container checkbox and click Populate Gallery. Once it is populated, you will be able to add Container web part to your web part page in SharePoint 2007.

  • Xcelsius 2008 - Known Issues (Application)

    AA: Area Affected
    PD: Problem Description
    WA: WorkAround
AA: How to recover from an Xcelsius crash
PD: If Xcelsius crashes during use, it may leave an orphan Excel process running in the Windows Task Manager. This is most often seen when you can't restart Xcelsius or Excel.
WA: You must go to the task manager and kill the Excel process before restarting Xcelsius, otherwise an Error message will occur. Press the CTRL-ALT-DEL keys simultaneously. Click on Task Manager. Click Process tab. Find and highlight any Excel.exe process. Click End Process. Exit Task Manager. Restart Xcelsius.
AA: Importing an Xcelsius 2008 SWF as a Canvas Image
PD: The Xcelsius 2008 canvas property sheet allows you import various file formats as background images, including SWF files. However Xcelsius 2008 SWF files cannot be imported; non-Xcelsius SWF files and CX4.5 SWF files can be imported.
WA: Do not import Xcelsius 2008 SWF files as a background image into the canvas or any image component or slideshow. This may cause a crash.
AA: Object browser Delete Key does not work
PD: Object browser: "Del" shortcut key is not working to delete the component thru object browser - This is by design - to prevent deletion of grouped components by mistake.
WA: Use Edit Delete on menu or right-click Del to delete components from the Object Browser.
AA: Starting Xcelsius causes Server Busy Error
PD: Starting Xcelsius may occasionally cause a server is busy error.
This is usually caused by a currently running Excel process. When Xcelsius starts it attempts to launch an instance of Excel or reuse a current instance. If that instance is busy, a warning message is displayed.
WA: Please click 'retry' until the error disappears and Xcelsius starts normally.
AA: Excel Interaction with Compatibility Mode turned ON
PD: When you turn Xcelsius compatibility mode ON, you can only use Excel from within Xcelsius 2008. It will block other spreadsheets that are open or that you try to open using this instance of Excel.
WA: Compatibility mode will be turned OFF by default. If you turn it on and then you need to use Excel outside of Xcelsius 2008, turn off compatibility mode. Or launch another instance of Excel from Start - Programs menu.
If you attempt to open an external Excel spreadsheet (by double-clicking a file or opening an attachment in Outlook) all interaction with the spreadsheet is disabled.
If you launch a new instance of Excel and then try to open your spreadsheet or XLS attachment in Outlook it will open fine.
Compatibility Mode is found under the File - Preferences - Excel Options menu. For further information read the information in the Release Notes supplied with the Xcelsius 2008 installer documentation.
AA: Crystal Xcelsius 4.5 XLF files won't open by clicking
PD: Trying to open an Crystal Xcelsius 4.5 XLF by clicking on the filename results in an Xcelsius 2008 error message: "Crystal Xcelsius is unable to load this file. This file may be corrupt or have features that cannot be supported by this version of Cyrstal Xcelsius."
WA: There is a known issue with Xcelsius 2008 opening Crystal Xcelsius 4.5 models by clicking on the filename. The workaround is to open the models in Xcelsius 2008 from the File-Open menu instead.

    1) arrow keys don't re-position selected elements on the stage
    2) fonts are ~2 units smaller after an import from 4.5 into 2008.

  • Late 2008 Trackpad Issues

The glass Track Pad on my Late 2008 MacBook Pro has a number of major issues rendering it closes to useless.
The Mighty Mouse and other pointing devices function normally on the same machine.
    1. The arrow or I bar will hang on check boxe's selection points, corners of input boxes, or go off to the far side of the targeted window and will remain stuck for random periods of time. Will hang and accept no further input for as long as a minute uo to a Minute.
    2. Cutting and pasting with the trackpads pads is very problematic. The acquire a "mind of their own" and will destroy work in all directions.
Settings from System Prefiences seem to have no effect on the Track Pads Behavior.

    XSERVE Early 2008
    OSX 10.5.8
Whenever my coworkers create new folders on our Xserve everyone else is denied access to the new folder.
Any idea why this is happening?
    Thanks!

    Captain Obvious says, "Permission problem."
On your shares are your applying ACLs and propogating the permissions through the share?  My guess is that you either forgot to apply an ACE to the parent or you did apply it but failed to propogate the ACEs through the entire data set.
Also, how are the users creating the folders?

  • Macbook Pro 2008 Graphics issue. HELP?

I have the 2008 Macbook Pro, 2.6Ghz intel core 2 duo, and have recently encountered the graphics issue which was very common in this machine. My mac is nowhere near dead though, it still runs most of the time from 10 mins (worst case) to a few days- before it freezes and glitches and dies. Most of the time it lasts around 1-2hr. I took it to the apple store and they said it would need a new logic board costing over £300- no thanks. Recently, I have been using SMCFanControl and ramped up the fans to around 5000rpm from 2000 rpm. I havent had any troubles for over a day. Will this carry on- as long as I dont let it over heat- is there any other fixes or advice. Thanks. Please reply!

I couldn't say what is causing the problem. You have graphics, so I assume the GPU is working. If it is hot, then perhaps you need to stop doing whatever causes that such as gaming. You might also check the CPU:
    Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
