Xserve Admin Account Problems

Hi,
Recently rebooted my Xserve 10.5.6 and now when i log in as admin it logs in as what appears to be a regular user and none of the usual admin tools that you would see in the Dock are there (i.e. user manager etc)
It has also lost permissions to insall apps or uninstall apps.
If i log in to the server as another user and try and perform administrative tasks it will prompt me for the admin password and seems ok.
Can anyone explain what has haoppened to the admin account and is it possible to reverse these changes?
TIA
Mark

as an admin user, did you have and files stored in your documents folder that are now missing?

  • Having Admin Account problem

I recently joined the Adobe Creative Cloud and downloaded many of the applications I use. Some of those applications will not open and in working with an Adobe service rep we discovered that it has something to do with my current Admin Account. I've also used Disk Utility and repaired permissions (from the install CD). I don't know how to correct this problem. I still have CS5 versions of my applications and they all work. Will doing a OS Recovery be a solution? If I did reimage my system and restored my files from timemachine wouldn't my admin problem follow me?
Don't know what to do next, so any advise would be appreciated.

Disk Utility does not repair permissions in a user's account. It would be helpful if you had a clue as to what is supposedly the problem with your admin account.
Have you tried creating a new user account, logging into the new account, and running these programs? Do you know if these programs are supposed to run on a Mac? Might they be Windows programs?
At present I don't know what help we can be. I can tell you how to reset permissions on your admin account for what that is worth:
Reset User Permissions and ACLs in Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
From the Utilities menu select Terminal. At the Terminal prompt enter: resetpassword. Press RETURN. When the window opens select your startup drive where it says "Select the volume containing the user account:" At the bottom of the window you will see, "Reset Home folder permissions and ACLs." Click on the Reset button.
You cannot repair permissions in Lion from an installer disc. You need to do the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • Can't start laptop - problems with automatic repair, need acces to admin account but there is none. HELP! :(

    Hello,
I'm having problems with my windows 8 laptop.
This afternoon I shut it down, and went to work. A few hours later when I came back home I noticed the little blue lights on the keyboard (showing me that the pc was charging and that my wifi is on) were still on. Normally these are off when the pc is turned
    off.
I tried starting the laptop but nothing happened, the screen stayed black. I held down the 'on' button to force it to turn off, and turned it on again.
I then got a textmessage on the startup loading screen that there were problems with my C drive (only drive the laptop has), so it went to automatic repair.
*my laptop's language is set to Dutch so I'm translating everything :)*
    It gave me 2 options:
    1: Restart computer
    2: Advanced options.
I tried option 1, didnt work ofcourse, it just restarted and I got back to this screen, so I checked what option 2 had to offer.
I got to a screen with 3 options:
    1: Continue to windows 8
    2: Solve Problems
    3: Shut down
When I tried option 1 the computer just restarted and went back to the same screen.
When I tried option 3 it shut down as it should.
Option 2 gave me 3 other options:
    1: Renew PC
    2: Factory reset
    3: advanced options
Option 1 just restarted my pc and took me back to screen 1.
Option 2 I havent tried yet, because it erases all of my files. This is a last resort.
Option 3 gave me 6 other options:
    1: Systemrepair
    2: Repair with installationcopy
    3: Startuprepair
    4: CMD
    5: UEFI firmware settings
    6. Startupsettings.
I can't use option 1,2,3,4 because I need to log in to an administratoraccount.
The bad part is: the laptop doesn't have an administratoraccount.
It was my parents laptop, and theyve set it up. I always assumed the account was an admin because
I had acces to everything and didn't need a password to run things as admin and such.
    Turns out it isn't.
I get this message (translated) when I try to acces one of these:
'You have to log in as administrator to continue, but this pc doesn't have an administratoraccount'.
I can't believe microsoft added a check to see if the pc has an admin account on it, and even added a specific message to show when it doesn't, but they didnt add the option to just use these tools when there is no admin account present? What were they thinking!
Option 5 I havent tried yet, when I click it it says I have to restart to acces these settings, but I dont want to mess with something I know nothing about.
Option 6 gives me a few options like run the pc in safety mode, run windows repair and disable auto-restart after something has gone wrong with windows. But when I select one of these options it doesnt work. It just takes me back to auto repair. It just doesn't
    doe anything.
There are no other options. Nothing I can do. My pc is stuck like this. The only thing I *might* be able to do is a factory reset, but I havent tried, and that could also just give me an error about me not being admin.
Some backstory of what I think caused this problem:
I believe the problems started a week ago, last friday.
I'm using a program called 'AVG TuneUp'. This program gave me a message telling me it was 3 months since it had checked my C drive for defects or anything. And it asked me if I wanted it to do so. Unknowing of the problems that would follow, I pressed 'ok'
    (or whatever it was).
I had to restart my pc for it to begin, because it could only check the drive during startup. It went to 12% and stayed there for like half an hour, after which I decided to google (on my phone) if that was normal. It turned out that that option doesn't work
well with windows 8 and that lots of people's computers got ruined after using it. I stressed and I tried to shut it down, but since I was still in startup the only thing I could do was force the pc to shut down, so I held down the power button and it shut
down. I restarted and managed to abort the proces. The laptop started fine and everything worked.
A few days later a game/program I use called League of Legends started to act weird, because I could not log in on my account (for the game) anymore. Some error with IE settings, which I was unable to fix. For more info about that go to http://boards.eune.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/help-support-en/8Eoz315J-cant-log-in-to-lol-and-cant-log-in-to-steam-either-weird-coincidence.
Although I doubt it will help.
That forum post also contains a link to a post I made on the Steam forum about not being able to log into steam anymore. (Steam is another program I used). I wasn't able to log into steam anymore about 1-2 days after I wasn't able to log into LoL.
Also at the same time my Norton sortof stopped working. It showed up as active in my task manager and AVG TuneUp program manager, but it wasn't in my task bar and I couldnt acces the control panel.
Then yesterday I checked my pc for errors with AVG TuneUp's 1-click maintenance tool, and it told me my C drive was fragmented badly, so I defragmented it using the tool. Laptop still worked fine after that.
And then today I got the error on startup about my C drive having errors.
Long story shot: Problem is probably caused because I stopped the repair of my C drive with the avg tuneup tool before it was done, however its weird that I'm only experiencing (big) problems a week after that happened.
    Hardware info:
It's a Samsung Ativ book 6  (google it for all the specs :) )
    RAM: 8 GB DDR3
    CPU: intel 3230M @ 2.60 gHz
    GPU: AMD Radeon HD 8850M
HDD: 1 TB S-ATAII hard disc
    I've found this page:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-system/windows-8-taking-me-to-automatic-repair-but-no/6cbc995e-9ecb-4e28-8d6c-adabdecb8374?rtAction=1424369231072
But I don't really understand what the answering person is saying, and my laptop doesn't have a CD drive..
I really, REALLY hope someone can help me with this, because my laptop is basically 100% 'destroyed'.
    Kind regards,
    Christian Collaert

    Hello,
Perhaps the operating system is incorrectly powering down or shifting the wireless adapter to a low power state in order to improve run time while on battery?
Try going into the Device Manager (filename: DEVMGMT.MSC), locate the wireless adapter under the Network Adapters tree, view its Properties, and on the Power Management tab, disable (un-check) the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power option.
Please let us know if that makes any difference (or not).

  • Problems with libraries and plugins - non admin account

I''ve got a couple of problems with a fresh install of photoshop on my windows Windows 7 64 bits system.
    1. Libraries panel does not work. It displays the following error and interaction is not possible:
    2. 3rd party plugins would load their content.
    3. In the Creative Cloud Application the apps tab would load and displays the "download error" message:
The funny thing is that all the above errors don't occur on the loacl admin account. So I think this might be a permission problem. I think the most easy sollution would be to work under the admin account, but sadly that's no option (company policy). I am able to extent the rights of the useraccount I work on, but I don't know in wich folders the software needs write permissions. The both Adobe folders in program files and program files (x86) I already changed to full acces for all users. Can someone please help me?

Problems with libraries and plugins - non admin account https://forums.adobe.com/people/pippyn%20stortelder
This is a permissions Error.  The other accounts on the computer do have permissions to use / change the administrator settings of these particular items.
There are two ways you can fix this. 1.) contact the admin of the system and let him know your accounts need read access to these items
    My Preferred method is:
If you are on a Windows Account, then you can choose those items to run in Administrator mode for all people.  ( win7,64bit )
Right click the infinity system for creative cloud (creative cloud icon - you would normally click to start the program. (not the one in your service tray, but the one in your menu area with the square red on it.
    choose/click on properties
choose/click compatibility (tab at the top of the window)
Last boxed option on this screen is: Run Program As Administrator,  Click that check box.
Click on  Change Settings for All Users
in the window that comes up again choose, put an X in the box-  the last option, Run Program As Administrator - Click Apply
    Click OK
Click OK and the opened preferences window should now be closed.
You should be able to simply invoke the Cloud app now. But you might want to reboot to safe.
Depending on the installation methods used for your add-ons, you may have to perform this same process for all add-ins.  I believe that would depend on which account, first installed the add-on and what level of permissions they have.
    Good Luck

  • Acrobat 8 problems one user opening hyperlinks, works on admin account

    Hi,
I have a user that has trouble opening hyperlinks on Adobe Pro 8. I can open hyperlinks fine when running as admin account and in FoxItReader as the user. I've also mirrored the settings of the admin account for Adobe Pro 8 with the user's settings for Adobe Pro 8 and it still doesn't work. Any idea on what's going on? I've also added full control permissions for the user to the Adobe folder in Program Files. Thanks for any help.

    Hi,
I've tried doing that and nothing is in the Blocked list. My settings are:
    1. Let me specify a list of allowed and blocked web sites
    2. nothing in the list of My Websites
    3. Always Ask, for Default behavior for web sites that are not in the above list
I've checked out many other sites looking for an answer to this problem but nothing would work. I figured I might as well see if there's anything else that I can do. Thanks for the help.

  • Problems with a Software update and Admin account

After updating my software two days ago, the administrator account on my 13" Aluminum MacBook has not worked. It works for 5-10 seconds after login and then totally freezes and doesn't recognise any change in status such as the removal of the power source or the plugin of my iPhone. I am positive that it was the update that caused this problem, as I have not updated the software on the other user account on my laptop, and that works perfectly fine.
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, how can it be fixed?
I called Apple Support yesterday before I realised that my secondary account was still working, and we established that there was no problem with the hard drive, but we were unable to get into "safe mode". The only advice the tech could give me was to find my startup discs and take it to an Apple store and call back in.
Now that I have more information, and am able to actually use most of the computer, I'm starting to think there may be an easier solution?
    Thanks!
since then I have been discussing the issue with another user on this forum at this link: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2474312&tstart=0
but so far we have had no luck!
Can anyone here help at all please? I can't make any sense of it!

Somehow setting up a root account and using it to access my admin account resolved the problem!

  • Migration problem (created second admin account)

So I just got a new Macbook Pro and wanted to transfer my music and documents from my time machine from my old Macbook.
I did it, but now I have a second Admin account with the music and documents. I don't want a second admin account and would like to delete it.
I only want one admin account, so how would I migrate the music and documents from the time machine to my current admin account?
So my questions are how do I delete the second admin account that was created and just mirgate it to the current admin account?
Another question that is off topic is: the feature on safari that when you quit safari that it opens up the same window. Can that be changed to just being the homepage at all times when I reopen safari after it was quit?

Drag them over to the original accounts Public folder, or move them to the hard drive level Users/Shared folder. You may experience some permissions problems you will have to fix.

  • Running into a lot of problems deleting an admin account

It's a long story, but I'm trying to delete the admin account. Things I have tried:
    * Logging out of the unwanted account -> Going to System Preferences -> Unlocking Users & Groups
I tried to use the minus sign to delete the account, but the minus sign is greyed out.
    * In response to this, I saw one user on a previous thread about this problem suggest going into Terminal and typing sudo dscl . delete "/Users/Account Name" (replacing "Account Name" with the admin account name). When I tried this, I got this message:
guest1 is not in the sudoers file.  This incident will be reported.
And then Terminal won't let me continue after that.
I'm seriously stuck here. Any help would be appreciated.

I found a solution and deleted the account following the steps from here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5664658?tstart=0
I'm still running into the guest1 is not in the sudoers file.  This incident will be reported. problem though. I need to get past that.

  • Problems running TestStand 4.0 under non-admin account

I am having problems running TestStand 4.0 under a non-admin account under windows XP. I have done the following:
       1. Set full control protection to entire National Instrument directory
       2. tcverselext.exe was giving me problems until I changed it to run in window 95 compatability mode. Otherwise I get an "you do not have administrator priviliges to run this command" error. Don't know if this is the correct fic for this.
       3. Now when starting TestStand I get a "Retrieving COM class factory for component with CLSID {B2794EF6-C0B6-11D0-939C-0020AF68E893} - failed due to the following error: 80040154." error
    Everything works fine as administrator.
    Can anyone help me?
    Don

The Version Selector needs to be run with Administrator Access.  When you are running it in Windows 95 Compatability Mode, you are masking the problem.  However, once you set the correct version of TestStand, you no longer need Administrator Access to use the Sequence Editor.

  • Import problems in new admin account

I have two accounts on my system, my main admin account ("Admin"), and a new user that I have just created ("Adam"). I am trying to duplicate my "Admin" setup in the "Adam" account and move my 24GB iTunes music folder and mailboxes across to it.
I moved across all the preferences from "Admin" to "Adam" and basically all my applications work fine, although I had to reinstall a few preference panes. The "Adam" account is configured with administrative access via the tick box in the accounts preferences.
If I archive my mailboxes under "Admin" and then copy to "Adam", the files show up as locked folders with the red sign on them and they cannot be imported. Likewise, if I drag the entire Mail folder out of preferences and across to "Adam" it is likewise locked up.
Similarly, I cannot move my iTunes music folder into "Adam" because iTunes reports that the librbary file is locked, hence it will not recognize the library from the "Admin" account.
How can I easily move my music and email into the "Adam" account? I thought that allowing admin rights under "Adam" would work, but obviously the "Adam" account does not have permission to access these files when they are simply copied across.

Glad you fixed it. In the future, here is a better way to move files from Account A to Account B without running into permissions headaches:
    1) Log in as A.
    2) Move the files to /Users/A/Public (don't move any Apple-created folders, like Documents, Pictures, etc. Just move their contents.)
    3) Log in as B.
    4) Navigate with Finder to /Users/A/Public.
    5) Drag the files to the Desktop. This will make new copies of them with correct permissions settings for B. File them away in the appropriate places in B's home folder.
    6) Log back in as A. Delete the files from /Users/A/Public.

  • Problems with Admin Account but not Test Account?

I recently installed my applications into this new MacBook Pro and it was working fine. After a few days Photoshop began acting up and after spending time with Adobe, it was determined that the Test Account is working properly but my Admin account is not. I reinstalled my Operating System but the same issue persists. There are three Framework permissions that won't repair in disk utility, would this have anything to do with it?
    What else should I try?
    Thanks for your help.

    Greetings,
If 1 user account has an issue but another does not then that would suggest something has changed in that user. Reinstalling has no effect on user specific issues (usually) as applications are usually system wide.
If it is only Adobe Applications that are acting strange, Adobe should be able to tell you what user specific files Photoshop has and where they are located. Personally I would contact them back before blindly yanking files (they make their software after all. They should know best what files might be important.)
However if you are feeling adventurous:
You could start by removing user specific files:
Your User > Library > Caches (restart after pulling this to the trash)
Your User > Library > Preferences > Adobe and/or com.adobe files (restart after removing)
This article might also be of use: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1199
    Hope that helps.

  • Mac OS X Server 10.6.8 on Xserve 2009 - Admin Account Won't Login

    Hello,
I installed the Lightspeed Server demo on my server - other accounts login, and I can use the admin credentials to access the server (Server Admin, AFP, etc), but auto login does not work, and the login window shakes when I try to login to that account on the server. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

First off I would check the console and see what it says when you try to log in with the admin account. It will give a message saying what the issue is.
Also is this a local admin or a network admin account?

  • Can't login to local NON-admin accounts-Directory Access set to server

I have a strange problem on a set of laptops that I cannot resolve and am hoping someone can help me.
    Here is the issue:
I have a set of building laptops (PowerPC, OSX.4.11) that seemingly will not "search locally" in the authentication process. The logins seem to work fine for NETWORK logins to our Open Directory Master xserve, but these machines will not login to any LOCAL non-admin accounts. The local root and local admin account logins do, however, work fine. ?? The remainder of the building computers (Intel iMacs OSX.4.11) appear to have the exact same settings and login fine both locally and via the network home directories.
    I have tried the following:
    Deleted DirectoryService preferences folder (MacintoshHD-->Library-->Preferences->DirectoryService)
Deleted the mcx cache in Directory Access
Tried adding a new non-admin user to test (still will not login)
Removed and re-created LDAP configuration (all set to custom)
Tried setting the LDAP to the automatic settings ("Add DHCP-supplied LDAP servers to automatic search policies")
Disabled all network connectivity (turned off Airport and disconnected the ethernet cable), still cannot login to local accounts
Tried to bind in LDAP configuration (when I did bind the machine, it would no longer authenticate to the network authentication server, so I did an "unbind" and restarted and it went back to performing the network logins, but still will not login to local non-admin accounts).
Reset passwords in System Prefs and also re-typed them in NetInfo Manager
    Deleted login keychains
    Deleted mcx.plist
Reinstalled the OS from disk and local logins worked TEMPORARILY--UNTIL I set the LDAP directory access to authenticate to our server (which I also need for the network logins to work),then, the issue started again.
*Same results with both ethernet and wireless connectivity enabled.
*Note: I also manage these local accounts via WGM (installed on the local machine) and even tried disabling that and still no luck.
Please help...I have spent hours and hours trying to find a solution and nothing seems to work! What am I missing??

    Mostly just a bump...
How about that .local extension, or trailing / ?

  • Can't delete admin account even as Root

We're experimenting with integrating our Mac users into Active Directory. I've read that you should delete the user account in Sys Prefs first and leave the home folder.
The problem we're having is that I can't delete the users account in system prefs even if I log in as the root user. I get a generic error after about 10 minutes of looking like it is working that says the account could not be deleted.
My guess is it has something to do with the fact that I had already logged into the same acount with an Active Directory login and the permissions have been changed on certain files and now it can't complete archiving the home folder because of some rights issue.
I have unbound the computer from the AD forest and ran disk permissions to no avail. I'd like to keep the existing home folder to use with the network login if possible so I haven't tried the quick delete option.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

You can't delete an account if it is logged in, or if it is the only admin account on the system. So make sure that there is at least one other admin account, and that the account you want to delete os logged out.
