Xserve (early 2008) with SAS drives

Greeting All,
Can Xserve (early 2008) add SAS driver in any bay of the chassis? Or it will like MacPro need add RAID card in it.

Yes, SAS and SATA Apple Drive Modules (ADMs) can be mixed in Xserve.
If you want hardware RAID, you need the add-on card.
Quoth the current Xserve technical page "Three independent hot-plug drive bays with support for SATA or SAS drives; support for up to 3TB of hot-plug internal storage using the following Apple Drive Modules:
80GB 7200-rpm SATA with 8MB disk cache
1TB 7200-rpm SATA with 32MB disk cache
73GB 15,000-rpm SAS with 16MB disk cache
300GB 15,000-rpm SAS with 16MB disk cache"

Other potential expansion options include outboard direct attached storage (DAS) via SCSI or SAS and a PCI-X or PCIe controller, outboard storage via Network Attached Storage (NAS), or outboard storage via Fibre Channel (FC) Storage Area Network (SAN) storage via PCIe controller. If you're looking at SAS disks here specifically for performance, I'd tend to go to DAS SAS or FC SAN storage as potential alternatives; they're toward the higher end.

XServe Early 2008 (MA882LL/A) + RAID card SAS drive capacity question

I've tried searching the web and support forums, but haven't been able to find a clear answer to the following question:
I have an XServe Early 2008 (MA882LL/A) with the Apple RAID card and three 73GB SAS ADMs. It's been working great for the last two years. I'm about to upgrade it to 10.6 Server, and if possible would like to swap in larger drives at the same time (since it'll be down for an afternoon anyway). However, only 73GB and 300GB SAS ADMs were ever offered for this model, and Apple says that the Promise 450GB ADM is not compatible with it. What I can't determine is whether I can put a larger drive (notably, a Seagate ST32000444SS) into the Apple ADM sled. The RAID controller seems to have no problem with large SATA drives in the SATA sleds, which seems like a good sign, but I'd rather not order $1K worth of new drives and discover in the data center that they don't work.
Does anyone know definitively whether or not larger drives will work in SAS ADMs with this model of XServe? The RAID controller firmware is current (hardware rev 1.0.0, firmware rev M-2.0.3.3), if that makes a difference. I've read all the docs I can fine--I'd be happiest with an "I tried it and it did/didn't work" kind of answer .

I am watching this thread as well. I have two of the same servers (without the RAID card) and have wondered the same thing as I migrate to Snow Leopard and as my data drives continue to fill up. Apple techs and local service techs have not been willing to endorse Amanda's solution for me and have stuck to the Apple Drive Compatibility chart which certifies 73 and 300 GB SAS drives only for this model XServe.

A Fibre Channel Card installed in the XServe and at least one Fibre Channel cable. If your XServe RAID has both controllers populated with drives you'll need two.

HT3571 ATI Radeon X1300 on (Xserve Early 2008)

After installing Snow Leopard, the max resolution when connecting the CD 30 inch to the XServe (Early 2008) is 1280 x 800. Under Leopard, the CD worked with 2560 x 1600 as it should be.
No software updates pending, I am at 10.6.8. When disconnecting the monitor, the max resolution rises to 1680 x 1050.
The X1300 is the original Apple "Xserve Graphics Upgrade Kit" and works properly, but not under Snow Leopard.
What can I do?

OK. So it is an 8-core Pro.

You would think it would be a straight swap, but newer GPUs take far more power so require a seperate power line to keep the power coming to the card as pure, fast and reliable as possible so that there isn't a large current draw through the mainboard of the Mac Pro.
The power cable should be included in the kit.
I would research it again though. Check out eBay if in doubt!

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

Right-click on Macbook Air (early 2008) with Windows XP?

I just bought a refurbished MacBook Air, early 2008 edition. I installed Windows XP Pro SP3 using Boot Camp, and everything is working perfectly, except tap-to-click and right-clicking using the trackpad. Both do not work at all, I've tried two-finger tap as well as three-finger tap for the right-click. I tried downloading the update driver from the Apple site, but it said "This update is not intended for this computer and will not be installed." Obviously, the update is meant for the late 2008 edition MacBooks.
One other interesting point is that Control Panel - Boot Camp does not have a "Trackpad' tab.
Anyone have any idea on how to fix this?

On reflection, all I probably need is the previous Trackpad driver; a prior version that is compatible with early 2008 edition of the MacBook Air. I have been unable to find this driver on the Apple site, would anyone know how I can go about getting this driver?

Mac Pro (early 2008): older SATA drive compatibility

I have 2 Seagate Barracuda SATA drives pulled from my PowerMac G5 and I'm wondering if they are compatible with my new Mac Pro (early 2008) 2x-2.8 Quad.

I just put in a WD Caviar 750GB. To say it is faster than any other 7.2K drive I've used is an understatement. Never dreamed I'd ever see 90+ MB/sec, not without 15K drive. Tops out even my 10K Raptor which turns in 89MB/sec.
When did the 7200.8/9 come out? 3-4 yrs is a lifetime for a disk drive.
But if you just want something that works, they should be fine for your needs. There was a time when 75GB ATA drives were the new best thing, or 180GB that cost nearly $300 when it came out and first introduced a 'huge' 8MB cache vs 2MB that was being used.
I would reformat and reload the data, serves to insure the data is backed up, then reloaded, especially if it was formatted until an OS older than 10.4.4.

Early 2008 MBP source drive won't boot after cloning

I cloned the original/source drive, via USB, Carbon Copy Cloner, to a Crucial MX100 256GB SSD. The clone process completed without errors. I powered down the system to do a start-up from the USB drive to see if it would boot. The computer will not start from the source drive and holding the Option key to select a boot drive never gets that far.
I can hear the optical drive try to spin up, the status light blinks quickly like it is trying to start and then quits, remaining a steady light. I have tried Cmd + R at boot without success. Tried the PRAM reset, also the SMC reset.
There is plenty of room on the source drive, at least 160GB. The target drive is the same size as the source drive.
Prior to cloning the source drive and powering down, the computer was operating flawlessly. This an early 2008 model with the 2.5Mhz processor.
Any recommendations? I am hesitant to remove the source drive and install the cloned SSD for concern that I'll end up with some other trouble.
I do not have a start up disk. BTW, the OS X is Yosemite, the most recent version, .10, I think.

My old Early 2008 MBP used to do that every now and then in the last years of its life. Got a dry-type optical drive cleaner, the kind that is a CD with 4 rows of very fine and soft bristles glued on the "business side". Memorex was the brand I got, good for 20-30 uses. Ran it thru every time the drive acted up, never failed to restore functionality.
Of course, the Mac would later go on and blow its logic board. And that was that.

By the way I noticed that he mentioned to you that your/my Macs will accept up to 6GB RAM ...
did you ever install the extra 2GB? I did a long time ago and it works really well.
It must have to do with the size of the sectors and the cylinder, head and sector configuration presentation to the computer from the drive.

MacPro early 2008 not mounting drive (Slot 2)

Anybody experiencing the following:
I'm using all HDD slots (x4) 2 of them are 2T Seagate Hybride SSD/HDD ST2000DX001 drives (Slot 2 and 3 respectivelly)
Seems that Slot 2 is not reading the drive. I switch it and same thing. Could it be an OS issue?

An old issue that is coming back more and more has to do with the drive mounting screws on the sled.
Increasingly, you must be sure to apply just enough torque with a tiny screwdriver to get the mounting screws "just tight" and no more (and no LESS). Anything else will not permit the drive to hang level from the sled, and will **** the connector on the drive so that it misses the backplane connector.
The reason this issue is happening MORE is that some manufacturers have discovered that they could put in another platter and makes some Really Big drives (3TB and up) if they shortened the allowed screw penetration for the screws adjacent to the platters. This leaves the Mac Pro drive screws adjacent to the platters bottomed out in their holes, but NOT snugging up the rubber washers. The drive seems fine, but does not mate, so it does not spin up or mount.

Early 2008 with 8800 won't boot

When the machine is post chime.... I get horizontal blue lines that look like tire treads up and down the screen which makes me think video card. In verbose mode it stops in the same spot each time... the drive is reading I can hear it and then it just stops loading. I did FSCK -FY in single user mode and it modified things, ran it until it again until I got the disk was "okay" message. I get the blue lines regardless of the boot device, and no drive will boot all the way in. The funny thing is, this happened yesterday and after doing the FSCK -FY in single user mode everything booted fine, but after sleeping the machine last night it woke up not working, just blue lines on the screen. Things I've done:
Flashed the PRAM many times.
Unplugged everything and let it sit for 15+ seconds, then plugged in display and keyb to clear the SMB
Removed RAM and tried various combinations. No LED indicators to indicate RAM issues
Reseated all drives and the video card, as well as RAM obviously see above
I pulled the trigger on a new video card which will arive whenever it gets here in case it is the card. Got the ATI 5770 which supposedly works on the Early 2008 model. I had been planning on doing this for awhile as playing RIFT has had the video card fan revving constantly so it's been pushed hard, plus I do a lot of video editing. If anyone has any other ideas please let me know. The last shutdown condition = 3 whatever that means. Any other ideas would be apprecated. I'll post back otherwise when i get the new card and report.

Oh and I had forgot to mention, I'd tried more than one display, and both DVI ports on the 8800 with the same result, so the cause of the lines is not external.
