Xserve Early 2009 Crashing

Hi Everyone
I have a Early 2009 Xserve running 10.8.4 server which is intermittantly crashing. What usually happens is the machine grinds to a halt and services stop working, access with ARD and SSH stop and even the GUI on the machine is unusable as the whole machine is running slow.
I noticed that last time is did this that the processor and ethernet lights on the front of the machine were all off even though the machine was clearly running.
I have taken screenshot of the console the last two times it has done this.
(default pager): [Kernal]: ps_allocate_cluster - send HI_WAT_ALERT
macx_swapon FAILED - 12
com.apple.launchd: (com.apple.sleepservices [42881] ) Exited: Killed: 9
Is there anyone else who is running Xserves with 10.8 Server having similar issues?
Thanks

Hi
I've access to a number of XServes running 10.8 and not seen the problem. I've seen the same and similar problems on other hardware and its usually a hard drive issue.
An idea of the drive configuration and quantity might help? For example is their a RAID card installed? If not are all the drive bays full? Is there a mixed make and capacity of drives? Are the drives configured as a software RAID? Anything attached externally? Tape drive etc?
Without any further details it's difficult to offer anything further.
HTH?
Tony

  • Xserve early 2009 won't Boot

My Xserve early 2009 won’t Boot , No Video , Activity LEDs Flashing :
Xserve begins to power up but does not boot
Fan array and hard drive are spinning
    Power LED is illuminated
Top row of activity lights flash
    No video on external display
My server was stored in the original box for 12 months now, when I reuse it, he presented the above problems
Anyone know how to fix this?

Thank you, Khashoggi. Reseating the ADM's did generate a different result in Disk Utility. The mirror had a state of "degraded" after reseating because one of the drives had an error. I began a rebuild but it was set to take 4 hours so I just re-built the mirror and re-installed the OS. I would have let it rebuild but it was a brand new instal; no configuration done at all so it was much quicker to just reinstall.
I've got the machine back to the state it was in before the issue and I've created both a Time Machine and Carbon Copy Clone backup of the System in case of further issues.
    Thanks again!

  • Xserve early 2009 normal fan speed?

Can anyone tell me what the normal operating speed for the Xserve early 2009 (xserve3,1) fans is?
I'm getting speeds between 5600 and 5888 RPM in a server room at 18 degrees Celsius.
    David

    Hi Camelot,
    Thanks for your response.
Overall, the Xserve that I'm concerned about has a light workload. It's being used as a file and web server. Most of the time CPU load is around 1% - 5%. The room temperature is at 18 degrees celsius.
The System Board fans are all between 5600 and 6000 RPM.
The Power Supply fans are both at 6656 RPM.
    These values remain pretty constant.
An AXD test didn't find anything wrong with the fans or sensors.
What concerns me is that Server Monitor reports the RPM values as the maximum value in its graph. See the attached screenshot.
This is not the case with our other Xserve, which is a G4.
I want to know if other users also report this behaviour or that perhaps something is wrong with the Xserve.

  • Xserve early 2009 and Service Diagnostics

I've got an Xserve early 2009 (Xserve3,1) that has its fans constantly blowing at maximum speed.
I'd like to run ASD of AXD to locate the problem. Using Disk Utility I made boot disks (CD-ROM, USB, ...) containing ASD 3X106 and AXD 3X104. But the Xserve doesn't recognize neither of them as boot disks. It's impossible to boot from these disks.
Does anyone have the proper procedure to run ASD or AXD on an Xserve?
    David

Make sure you are using 3X106 http://support.apple.com/kb/DL948 first.
I made this into a bootable image on my external hard drive. So all i have to do is plug the usb drive to the front of the xserve and boot to it.
Before you do any of this though I would try to reset the SMC. You can do that by shutting down the xserve and unpluging both power plugs for 1 min.
See if that makes a change first, If not go into server monitor and check your temps, maybe one of the sensors is bad and reporting that the machine is hot when its not.

  • PCI-Express 4gb  Xserve (early 2009) and Xserve Raid

    Hi, I have one question.
Can I connect my Xserve (early 2009) with a dual 4Gb fibre PCI express card to an Xserve Raid (M9721LL/A) with only a Dual 2GB built in Fibre card? Or perhaps I need to buy a dual 2gb for my Xserve.?
Maybe the question is a little dumb but I am a newbie with these systems.
    Thanks in advance
    Sam

The 4Gb fibre channel ports are fully backwards-compatible with the 2Gb ports. You can connect them just fine, and they'll run at 2Gb.

  • No OpenCL Device for the GPU on XServe (Early 2009)

    Hi,
we want to utilize OpenCL on our Server. The GPU (NVidia GT 120) should be supported according to all specs I can find and one can google for benchmark results for Mac Pro's also equipped with the GT 120.
The software, OpenCL Framework, CUDA drivers, and our test programm also seem to work fine and have properly installed themselve on the server as well as on our MacBook Pro (for testing).
To be a little more exact, the NVidia CUDA drivers and NVidia CUDA Toolkit have been installed from here:
    http://developer.nvidia.com/object/cuda3_1downloads.html#MacOS
On the MacBook Pro (NVidia 9400M), the OpenCL programm successfully finds both OpenCL devices:
    Device #0 name = GeForce 9400M
    Device #1 name = Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8700 @ 2.53GHz
On the XServe, the GPU is not listed in the queried device list:
    Device #0 name = Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5550 @ 2.67GHz
Our algorithm test runs well utilizing the CPU device on the XServe, thus we suspect the framework to be properly installed.
Also, we can use GPU accellerated OpenGL on the XServe very well.
Have we made something wrong, have we missed any software?
Is this a known/wanted limitation of the XServe?
Is anyone out there using OpenCL on the GPU of the XServe?
    Thanks in advance,
    TB

I did go look at the NVIDA web page, and don't see something in particular to download to run some tests or to have a look at the code. (There were a pile of links over there, but nothing obvious to test to get to the error.
To run a test with the OpenCL Framework and verify that it is not just our XServe not listing a GPU device for OpenCL you could use this simple tutorial app which works out of the box and is compiled with a single click:
    site: http://www.macresearch.org/opencl_episode3/
    app: http://www.macresearch.org/files/opencl/Episode3source.zip
This should run with the original distribution. NVidia offers CUDA drivers, OpenCL works on CUDA capable devices only.
Theoretically they should not be needed because 10.6.6 already supports OpenCL but I suspected this to cause the missing device and installed them, but without the intended result:
    http://developer.download.nvidia.com/compute/cuda/31/drivers/cudadriver_3.1.17macos.dmg
Some other things might be included in the CUDA toolbox from NVidia.
I don't know why this doesn't work. Have you checked with NVIDIA directly to see if they have tested with this controller? It looks like it's listed as supported ([here|http://developer.download.nvidia.com/compute/cuda/32_prod/docs/Getting_StartedMac.pdf] and particularly [here|http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_gpus.html]), but there are clearly issues with the device.
There's a [long thread|http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=91033] on GT 120 series support, and there's very little (nothing) over there that lists Xserve support. So I state this again (and without intending any sarcasm), please consider directly asking NVIDIA for information on their package.
I know that thread. And there are more resources on the web about OpenCL running on GT 120 cards of the Mac Pro.
I will of course ask NVidia about it, too.

  • My iMac (24-inch, Early 2009) will not play DVDs.

My iMac (24-inch, Early 2009, purchased new from an Apple store) will not play DVDs.  When I attempted to open the DVD Player file in Utilities I got the following error message: ‘A valid DVD drive could not be found. [-70012]’  I've downloaded nearly every software update that Apple has notified me has come available. It's been several years since I last used the CD/DVD player, but i was quite surprised and unhappy today when it spat out every DVD I inserted.  Anyone know how I can resolve this problem?

  • Apple RAID Card (Early 2009) Firmware Update 1.1

The update is recommend for all Mac Pro (Early 2009) and Xserve (Early 2009) systems with the Apple RAID card.
This update provides several fixes, including:
Reliability improvements during boot and power fail recovery
Improves handling of hard drives with bad blocks
    Improves RAID 1 read performance
Improves hard drive compatibility with non-Apple drives
Improves support for systems with 48GB or larger memory
    Improves battery handling and reporting
This update requires Mac OS X v10.5.8 or Mac OS X Server v10.5.8 or later. You will need to restart your computer as part of the update process.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3831
After this update has successfully completed,
your RAID Firmware Version will be: E-1.3.2.0
The updater application will be installed in the /Applications/Utilities folder and will launch automatically. Please follow the instructions in the updater application to complete the update process.

I have a few of these RAID cards in a couple servers, and then I have an earlier version of the RAID card in a few different servers.
The earlier servers are running non-apple 1.5 TB drives. It will be interesting to learn if this firmware update will indeed allow me to boost the capacity by installing non-apple drives, as the firmware previously has not.
Ohh I'm excited to update and try! This will greatly help out if it does!

  • I have an early 2009 iMac need advice

I am new to this forum. As I mentioned in subject I have an early 2009 iMac with 4 GB of Ram. I am up to date with my operating system, running Yosemite 10.10.1.
My problem is that my computer is slow - very slow.  It takes forever for the computer to start up and once it up forever for programs to load. Mail is the best example taking it a minimum of 5 minutes to load and in the mean time nothing else will load. RecentlyI started running the disk utility and repairing permissions.  That helps a tiny bit. I also got CleanMyMac 2 and use it as well. In reading some of the forum I noticed someone suggested to run an EtreCheck report and post its report which I have done.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

Pay attention to what rkaufmann87 is saying, because I agree.
    Chrome is very resource intensive.
It is possible you are running other memory intensive apps.
You have a lot of 3rd party additions loaded at boot time.  Do you really need all of them?  Even after you get rid of MacCleaner (as suggested by rkaufmann87).
Do you really need the seagate and WD drive software?  The Mac is fairly good at accessing disks without 3rd party intervention.
Any of the 3rd party additions listed by EtreCheck that you do not need, you should consider uninstalling.
    That fact that you have
        171.19 GB    Page-ins
in just about 4 days, says you have about 0.5megabytes per second.  That is a huge load on your disk drive.
Either cut back on the RAM intensive apps, or get more RAM.  At least 8GB, but if your Mac supports it, 16GB.  Crucial.com and MacSales.com (OWC) are well respected by the long term forum contributes.

  • What is the best way to upgrade my Early 2009 Macbook Pro 17"?

My Macbook hasn't been working well and I'm worried about things getting worse when going to Yosemite.  My system has some hardware problems (CD drive doesn't work, needs a new battery), but I'm looking to upgrade the whole system now.  I'd like to up the RAM to 8GB, put in a new hard drive (solid state?), etc...
Here is my EtreCheck-- I am looking for advice about what needs to be done to get my system back up and working?  Thanks!

    1. Increase your RAM to the maximum 8 Gigs.
    2. Replace your 5400 rpm hard drive with either a SSD or, if price is an obstacle, a hybrid 7200 rpm drive.
    3. Buy a new battery, recommend the genuine Apple one.
    4. Replace the DVD drive, if you need it.

  • Early 2009 iMac is running very slow

My early 2009 is running very slow.  Takes about a minute to open Safari upon start-up....even opening up folders from finder take a long time.  Get the spinning beachball often.  Opening websites takes 30-40 seconds sometimes....they do open eventually.  I have run permissions repair from Disk Utility. Our iPad has no such problems.  iMac is hardwired, iPad is wireless.  I ran a report with "EtreCheck" but don't really understand what it is telling me.  I have about 100GB of space left out of 300GB.  Will attach "EtreCheck" report if I can figure out how!
Thanks so much for any help!  Only recent changes I have made is upgrading iPhone and updating Charter Cable Security Suite.

I am having the same issue. I am going through some of the things listed above. When doing the Go To Folder portion of the Adware tutorial none of those files existed on my iMac. I will do the rest but was wondering if you can see any clear problems from my EtreCheck report. Thanks!

  • Macbook Pro Early 2009 Randomly Sleeps / Black Screen While In use

My macbook pro Early 2009, randomly goes to sleep while I am using the computer, I first noticed it occuring while I was using the mini display adapter to a computer monitor, and using a second monitor and watching a movie, the screen would go blank and I would have to wake it from sleep for it to come back on, sometimes closing the lid, sometimes pressing the trackpad, or keyboard to get it to work again, sometimes it would go back to sleep within 1 minute of waking.
I assume the problem could have been from perhaps water damage, as I recently used a wet paper towel to clean my keyboard, and perhaps the paper towel was a little to moist, not overly but perhaps just enough to damage the sleep sensor. I am still unsure where that is located, the only other problem I have noticed with the computer is my [battery service indicator] notification has been on for the last year, but since I never used the battery, I always have it plugged in at the desk I never bothered getting it serviced. So
I'm assuming its the Sleep Sensor? but here is what I hace done, just to make sure its not software. I was orignaly running 10.8, and after being frustrated while watching a movie and having my computer sleep every 2 minutes, I whipped my hardrive, put 10.9 developers preview on a usb and installed that.
On 10.9 I can swipe with 3 fingers on the trackpad and the display appears but if i let go of the swipe it goes back to black screen.
I can see Icons like, brightness, and sound, when adjusting the levels, but screen is black behind the icons
The mouse pointer cursor is visible but the screen is black
I can move the mouse and hear system sounds, but screen is black. Now I have to actually restart the computer because It seems like I cannot wake it up at all.
So I formatted the hardrive again and
I tried reinstalling Leopard OSX , as that was the disc that came with the mac,
but have Same problems in 10.5, 10.6, 10.7, 10.8 I upgraged to developer 10.9 to see if the problem would fix, but still occurs.
I ran hardware diagnostic off the leopard disc 2, by pressing the D key on startup with disc in drive, extended hardware test reported no problems.
I SMC reset and PRAM reset,  [control]+[option]+[shift]+[powerbutton] while computer is turned off with power plugged in
and after that failed I tried pressing [Option]+[Command]+[P]+[R] before startup chime, chime repeat let go of keys and it booted normally.
Then computer randomly sleeps while in use, while using safari and it has happened 3 times within 2 minutes of typing this.
I have downloaded a program called InsomniaX, and activated the disable sleep for Lid and Idle, but now the screen will randomly just go black and then turn back on, sometimes it will just black screen for 10 seconds and come back on, altho after changing some more of the settings It appears to be not as frequent. It hasen't gone to sleep since writing this entire paragraph, so thats a good sign.
I was going to take it into the apple store, and have them run diagnostics, but I hate going into those stores because of all the iphone people, crowding the place.
Well my screen just blacked and came back within 10 seconds on while I typing this line so InsomniaX didn't work. I hope having the sleep sensor replaced isn't too expensive, or if my model even has such a sensor.
I read on another topic that this problem can be replicated by users putting a magnet on their laptop, something like an iphone or a money clip or even having one of these in their pocket while using the macbook on their lap. I have not had anything near the computer, so I have a different problem.
Just thought Id document this, will let you know what happens after the diagnostic, I tried apple support, and they said I did more than they would have done, so he couldn't really tell me anything besides take it into genius bar, (is that what its still called) and have them run diagnostic, [note its different than the hardware test on the cd]
and my computer screen goes black again, wow..

Hi pictureswithPS, welcome to Apple Discussions!
    1. I have an original late-2008 unibody MBP that was purchased a week after the introduction. I have never had a single "black screen of death" ever, and I do some gaming under OS X on my machine. The heat issues are, in my humble opinion, greatly exaggerated. Does the machine get warm? Yes. However, any computer with this much power in this thin of an enclosure is going to get warm. Mine has never crashed, frozen, black screened, etc. once.
    2. I don't think PS is particularly intensive on the graphics card. It may use the graphics card, yes, but I don't think it will be quite as intensive as a 3D modeling application or 3D games. I would doubt you would ever run into problems anyway.
    3. Lastly I am aware that their are tools to manage fan speed behavior - as a workaround to cool down temperatures. Using this software would it void the warranty that is provided by Apple?
No, it wouldn't likely void the warranty. However, if your fans die prematurely as a result of running them at high speeds for extended periods of time, I doubt Apple would be especially happy about replacing them. I do not use any 3rd party tools to manage my fans, and never will. It is simply not necessary.
