Xserve G4 (slot loading) not booting from a system disk - HELP!

I've read through the support and learned that when booting from a disk that the Xserve wants to load resources into the ram, therefore taking a long time to boot.
I waited over 40 minutes and still the Xserve did not boot up.
Was I too impatient? Should I have waited longer? How long? Or can I bypass this?
I need to repair my hard drive but because of this issue haven't been able to touch the drive.
Thank you for your help.

Hello pkchoo, and welcome to the Appleboards,
Forty minutes sounds like too long to wait for even a G4 from a CD drive but I've never booted one that way personally. If the internal drive is really dead that can sometimes hang booting from even a known good source. If you pop the drive in question does the machine boot then?
Other things you can try are booting from an external firewire drive or booting the Xserve into Target Disk mode and attaching another computer (like a notebook) to the firewire and checking the disk as an external drive. There should also be (I believe this is true for all Xserves) hardware evaluation and testing disks that you can use to see if the long boot time and troubles are perhaps more than just drive trouble.
Good luck,
=Tod

With the code purple error on the screen, press shift+f10 (the shift key and the F10  key (at the top of the keyboard) at the same time) to open a little screen called a  command prompt. Type the following line, just as you see it here...
    notepad C:\hp\bin\checkdmi\checkdmi.cmd
so it will look like this
    C:\>notepad C:\hp\bin\checkdmi\checkdmi.cmd
    Press Enter.
You will see the text for the file listed in a window using a simple text editor.
Go to the beginning of the text. Press enter to make a space. Type this...
    goto cleanup
So, whatever comes after, the first line looks like this...
    goto cleanup
Save the file and exit notepad and restart your PC. You are good to go.

  • Snow Leopard- Not booting from start up disk

I am trying to do a clean installation of Snow Leopard on my Macbook. It previously  had Mavericks, I erased everything and inserted the Snow Leopard disk, attempting to reinstall. However I boot from disk holding down "C", and then I receive a "you need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again" message.
I tried booting in "safe mode" but that doesn't do anything.
    Anyone able to help?

If your MacBook shipped with something newer than Snow Leopard, it most likely won't run on Snow Leopard.
In the future, when you post a question to the forum, it's always a good idea to list the model of your Mac.

  • Safe boot from raid1 system disk? Still recommended for updating OS?

    Is it possible?
    If it is how?
My MP just reboots or hangs.
Is safe boot still better way to update OS in .5?
GUI is disabled anyway in "normal" update procedure and maybe same services than with Safe Boot?

  • My imac wont boot from the install disk

My IMAC will not boot from the install disk.

Hello, your installation disk is running under OSX??? If no the media has a problem!!!
    1. Restart your mac and hold the alt (option key) to select media to install.
    2. Restart you mac and hold the "c" key to boot.
an other solution is to make a partition on the hard drive and put a restore image of the Mac os X Installation dvd inside it then Restart your mac nad hold the "option" key and you will see the partition with mac os x installation and you can make a new installation from there.

  • Intel Xserve will NOT boot from hard disk drive

I have two Intel Xserves 2.0 QC machines
I have tried to re-install version 10.4.11 OS (don't ask) onto a Hard disk drive that is in a Disk drive caddy and inserted in the machine.
When booting from The installation DVD media
The disk is seen by the "Disk Utility" (the disk is partitioned as GUID boot) and the installation proceeds to the disk.
Once the first pass of the installation is complete and the system reboots, the system shows the folder and ? mark.
If I boot and hold "ALT" key to view all avaialble boot options the Hard Disk Drive does NOT appear as valid boot disk.
It does show, the still inserted Installation DVD.
I CAN boot from an external firewire drive and the Hard disk drive is visible to the OS once logged in.
I have tried different caddy postions (left, middle and right)
I have tried bona fide Apple supplied Disk drives
I have tried various different caddies
I have tried installing Operating System 10.5.*  and  10.6.8 server
I have run SMC reset and system reset
But still I cannot boot off from any Hard Disk Drive inserted in a caddy at the front of the system.
    Has anyone seen this behaviour?
    Is it fixable?
Do I have replace something like the Hard Disk Drive back plane circuit board? Or even the main logic board?
I have now run out of ideas and cannot find any help in discussions or just googling.
ANY help would be very appreciated
    Regards
    Tony

    Antonio Hi !
QC = Quad core  or  QX as it is written on the "pull out" serial number tab at rear of system
    I have 3 late 2006 Intel xserves
On my intial posting I declared 2 were 2.0 machines - when I was trying to be concise
2 of the macines are 2.66 systems and 1 is 2.0 system - all are QX machines
the 2.0 and 1 of the 2.66 will NOT boot from the ADM and disk inside the system - whereas the other 2.66 system will.
I have many different Caddies and these have different product/model number labels
    603-9965
    603-9545
    603-9796
    these are marked "intel SATA"
The 80Gb was only one of the drives tested - I have used Seagate 400Gb 750Gb and 1Tb  -  all of which have been used in systems at one time or another
and as I said the drives ARE visible once the operating system (either installation DVD or external firewire are booted from) - they are just NOT visible when the system is searching for boot media.
Thanks for the guide - I will look through that and continue to try and find an answer

  • Macbook Pro will not load OS and will not boot from Install Disk

When I try to turn on my macbook pro it goes to the gray logo screen with the spinning gear however it does not progress from there and then after several minutes it proceeds to restart itself and the same process repeats itself. I have tried to boot into single user mode with success and have run /sbin/fsck -fy and that has returned that the volume appears to be ok. However, when I hit reboot it returns to the same process of the gray screen and spinning gear to black screen which repeats. When I boot into verbose mode it progresses to AppleYukon2: RxRingSize <= 1024, TxRingSize 256, RXMAXLE 1024, TXMAXLE 768, STMAXLE 3328 then it stalls for several minutes and then it shows continuing
    synchronizing disks... Killing processes
then it says some other stuff to fast to read.
When I try to boot from the install disk it will not boot from holding the c key it goes through the same aforementioned cycle. When using option to boot I can see the Disk then when I select it the cycle happens again.
Also I have XP installed and I am able to boot into that successfully. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Not sure if I left anything out
    -bryce

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Do you have multiple Accounts defined on that system? The last time you successfully were running, did you run from the Account with Administrator privileges?
Do you have another computer from which you could boot and connect the Macbook Pro in Target Disk Mode to take a look at the drive from your working machine? Perhaps you can run Disk Utility from the working machine and point to the hard disk on the failing Macbook Pro.

  • Quicksilver G4 will not boot from a cloned firewire external drive.

    Hi all,
Just as the subject line says.  I know this is a problem for many PPC users.  I simply want to erase the HD so I can sell this Mac.  In order to do that, I need to boot from an external source.  I do not have the original disks that came with this system long ago.  I have Panther and Leopard disks (10.5 is the terminal OS for this non Intel based Mac)... but neither of them will boot this Mac... I've tried.  I've used a WD firewire drive as well as a Maxtor, but no luck.  I've cloned the entire internal drive using Super Duper, with the external HD first formatted to Mac extended format.  The system recognizes both drives and they even appear in the list of 'start up discs' but no matter what I choose or even 'option C' or 'command-option P-R' on start up, will not get this sucker to boot to anything else except the internal drive.  The Mac also has a second internal drive, which was wiped easily.  Is there any clever way I can make this work so I can erase the main drive and prepare the Mac for sale?  I've researched this a lot and for some reason, many of these PPC's are fussy about what type of external drive they will boot to.  My understanding is that Firewire is the only way to go.  Thanks... MIke

Does it still not boot from that Disc?

  • IMac will not boot from any mode except Target Disk

I have an Early 2008 Penryn iMac 24" MB398LL/A running OS X 10.7.4 (see specs below) that will not boot from ANY mode, It also has several strange vertical bars from top to bottom on the screen. They are about 10 px wide, with some pixels empty and looks a bit like a barcode if you squint at it.
I have tried Safe Boot, Force Boot, DVD Boot, FireWire/USB Boot,  and it always gets to the same point. It gets to the apple screen with the spinning gear and then after about 8 seconds it freezes. The only way it works at all is in Target Disk Mode. It pops right up on my Macbook Pro and I was able to grab all my info!
I have run Disc Utilities and Tech Tool on it many times from my MBP and it passes every test.
I reformatted the HD and installed 10.7 again, it still freezes up at the same point.
I have tried using Single User mode and every time have had to run /sbin/fsck -fy twice because it always says the disk is ok but it was modified on the first pass.
I thought maybe it had a bad video card or logic board but and I ran the Apple Hardware Test on many occasions and it always passes. Recently I was told about Loop Mode and just completed running the AHT for just over 30 hours without any errors at all.
    UPDATE...
Strange Part… I tried installing Mountain Lion in Target Disk Mode and everything went smoothly. When it restarted on its own the lines on the screen were gone for the moment, but the Mac still freezes up on the spinning gear and immediately restarts on its own.  I have run every thing listed above on it and still nothing. Sometimes the lines reappear then in two more starts they are gone.
I did manage to have it start one time got a copy of the  the error report (its at the bottom too) The Mac ran for at least 30 minutes with no problems, then the screen went crazy a few seconds and it became unresponsive. The mouse moved but that was all it could do. Now my iMac continually restarts itself, I don't have any more ideas, HELP!

  • Not booting from 10.4.8 volumes after upgrade from 10.4.7

I'm sorry to report that my aged G4 450 MHz AGP with 4 internal Hard disk drives no longer boots from any of the 2 volumes upgraded to Mac OS X 10.4.8 as soon as it was started from another volume!
All was working fine as long as 10.4.7 was installed on the 2 232 GB disks connected to the SIIG ATA133 controller. I could boot from any OS on any of the 4 disks, 5 partitions:
    internal ATA66 bus:
18 GB disk, 2 partitions: 'IBM_18GB' with OS 9.2.2 and TechTool Pro's 'eDrive' with 10.4.7
    71 GB disk, 1 partition 'IBM_71GB' with OS 9.2.2
    PCI SIIG ATA133 controller:
232 GB disk, one partition 'I1232GB' with 10.4.7, now upgraded to 10.4.8 and no longer bootable
232 GB disk, one partition 'I2232GB' with 10.4.7, now upgraded to 10.4.8 and no longer bootable
Now I can only boot from the Mac OS 9.2.2 or the eDrive 10.4.7 partitions.
What I did so far: 'I2232GB' was my main OS X startup volume, 'I1232GB' contains a clone of it, plus additional folders like software base and backups.
After upgrading 'I2232GB' to Mac OS X 10.4.8 through Software Update and repairing permissions all was OK as long as the Mac was just shut down or re-started: it always booted up in Mac OS X 10.4.8 from 'I2232GB' without any problems.
The next day I booted from 'I1232GB' to do the same there.
Afterwards I could no longer boot in Mac OS X 10.4.8 from 'I2232GB' nor in in Mac OS X 10.4.8 from 'I1232GB': it just gets to the grey screen with the Apple logo, but the round circle underneath indicating some progress never appears. I left it there for hours: it just hangs.
With the Option key held at startup I could boot from the other partitions with Mac OS 9.2.2 or the eDrive with 10.4.7. None of their Startup Control Panels was able to get me back to 10.2.8!
So I booted from the TechTool Pro 4.5.1 DVD to Optimize both volumes, 'I1232GB' & 'I2232GB', always Files only.
Then I booted from the DiskWorrior 3.0.3 CD to rebuild the directories of both volumes, 'I1232GB' & 'I2232GB'.
Still I can not boot from either 'I1232GB' or 'I2232GB' in Mac OS X 10.2.8!
Downloaded the Mac OS X 10.2.8 Compo Update (for PPC) and installed it onto both 'I1232GB' & 'I2232GB' while booted from the eDrive which I keep on Mac OS X 10.4.7 - no luck either, still I can not boot from either 'I1232GB' or 'I2232GB' in Mac OS X 10.2.8!
Then I backed up the users folder from 'I2232GB' onto 'I1232GB', booted from Mac OS 9.2.2 and used Intech's Hard Disk Speedtools 3.6 to format 'I2232GB', afterwards initialized it with Alsoft's Plus Maximizer Extension for a Block Size of 512 Bytes.
Installed Mac OS X 10.4 from DVD, as well as iLive '06 and upgraded everything to the latest releases with Software Update. All was working fine with all the required reboots until another startup volume was chosen: afterwards again I can no longer boot back into Mac OS X 10.2.8 on the fresch installed 'I2232GB'!
    Any help would be appreciated.

Apple G4 AGP   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   4 internal hard disks, dual layer DVD-RW, 2GB RAM

What I did so far: 'I2232GB' was my main OS X
startup volume, 'I1232GB' contains a clone of it,
plus additional folders like software base and
    backups.
After upgrading 'I2232GB' to Mac OS X 10.4.8
through Software Update and repairing permissions all
was OK as long as the Mac was just shut down or
re-started: it always booted up in Mac OS X 10.4.8
    from 'I2232GB' without any problems.
The next day I booted from 'I1232GB' to do the same
    there.
Afterwards I could no longer boot in Mac OS X 10.4.8
from 'I2232GB' nor in in Mac OS X 10.4.8 from
'I1232GB': it just gets to the grey screen with the
Apple logo, but the round circle underneath
indicating some progress never appears. I left it
there for hours: it just hangs.
With the Option key held at startup I could boot from
the other partitions with Mac OS 9.2.2 or the eDrive
with 10.4.7. None of their Startup Control Panels was
able to get me back to 10.4.8!
So I booted from the TechTool Pro 4.5.1 DVD to
    Optimize both volumes, 'I1232GB' & 'I2232GB',
    always Files only.
Then I booted from the DiskWorrior 3.0.3 CD to
rebuild the directories of both volumes, 'I1232GB'
    & 'I2232GB'.
Still I can not boot from either 'I1232GB' or
    'I2232GB' in Mac OS X 10.4.8!
Downloaded the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Compo Update (for PPC)
and installed it onto both 'I1232GB' & 'I2232GB'
while booted from the eDrive which I keep on Mac OS X
10.4.7 - no luck either, still I can not boot from
either 'I1232GB' or 'I2232GB' in Mac OS X
    10.4.8!
Then I backed up the users folder from 'I2232GB'
onto 'I1232GB', booted from Mac OS 9.2.2 and used
Intech's Hard Disk Speedtools 3.6 to format
'I2232GB', afterwards initialized it with Alsoft's
Plus Maximizer Extension for a Block Size of 512
    Bytes.
Installed Mac OS X 10.4 from DVD, as well as iLive
'06 and upgraded everything to the latest releases
with Software Update. All was working fine with all
the required reboots until another startup volume was
chosen: afterwards again I can no longer boot back
into Mac OS X 10.4.8 on the fresch installed
    'I2232GB'!
I found several typos in above post, wherever it was 10.2.8 it should have read 10.4.8 - I'm very sorry for confusing you, this would not have made sense, but I found no way to edit the existing text therefore I modified the quote of it here.
I do not need Mac OS X 10.2.8 back, but it would be nice to boot back in Mac OS X 10.4.8 from another volume as the current one - which was working fine before with Mac OS X 10.4.7.
    Many thanks,
    Josef

  • Will Not Boot from Install Disc  & 4SNS/1/40000000: TG0D - Thermal Sensor?

*Will Not Boot from Install Disc*
I used the "option key" approach with the gray start up disk. At first it ejected the start up disk. Then I nudged the disk back in the machine and it showed on the screen as an option. I clicked on the start up disk image and it finally loaded.
But, it won't accept the start up disk when holding down the "C" key at restart.
    *4SNS/1/40000000: TG0D*
I did an Apple Hardware Test and received the following diagnostic:
    Version: 3A121

    Result: Failed
    Failure code: 4SNS/1/40000000: TG0D

A search for the failure code 4SNS/1/40000000: TG0D brought up an Apple Discussion topic entry stating: That error code indicates a problem with a thermal sensor. It could be not working or possibly not connected. You will need to take it to Apple for repair.
Would a thermal sensor have anything to do with it not starting up when holding down the "C" key at restart? What are thermal sensor problem symptoms?
    *User File Folder Opened Up*
The machine also starts up with my user file folder opened up rather than with a blank screen as it normally should
I completed a DiskWarrior rebuild on the disk and verify disk shows it is fine.
Any suggestions on what to do next with these issues?

The answer was in your post: "You will need to take it to Apple for repair."

  • BIOS update, then will not boot from any drive

This old laptop, 3000 C200 8922 was acting very clunky when on wireless.
Downloaded Bios Version 63ET62WW and flashed it into the bios.
Now, even though I can get to the bios screen, and it shows the hard drive, DVD/CD drive, it will NOT boot from either.
It will also "see" a usb installed, but will not boot from it.
I have removed all power and cleared the CMOS several times and I still have nothing. Tried two different hdd's which have been in the machine and same results.
HELP!! I should have never messed with it......

    hi k4pew,
One rule after a BIOS update is to Load optimize deafults after updating.
Try that go inside BIOS Hit F9 to load defaults then F10 to Save and Exit.
    If not
Try turning on the computer and start hitting F1 to load the Recovery Menu and see if that will push then Try Reseting the PC.
If still the same Im afraid that the BIOS needs to be reflashed.
Im not aware of any flash tool or a your Previous BIOS Version Firmware available for download.
You can try calling Lenovo Technical Support for any options available for repair.
Im sorry to hear what happened
    Regards
    Solid Cruver

  • [Solved] Installing on a system that does not boot from cdrom or usb

I have a very old and stuborn gateway solo 5300 laptop that refuses to boot form the disk I burned for arch linux, as well it refuses to boot from the usb disk I made with dd acording to Usb Flash Installation Media on the wiki
I also tryed UNetbootin: Install Arch Linux Without a CD From FTP.
It currently boots to windows xp, has two partitions and I wish to overwrite the entire hardrive.  Do you have any sugestions?

Really?  I have a netbook with a total of 1G, and I never get anywhere close to using even half of that.  Certainly this depends on the programs used - but for terminal only, 512MB would be more than enough IMHO.  On my 1GB, I boot into X with a simple WM, and can use lightweight (but fully functional graphical) web browsers like luakit and dwb without getting anywhere near half RAM use.
If it is just 128MB, I agree that may be more of a problem.  I wonder if Slitaz is still going - that was my favorite "micro" distro, but I have not kept track of the development in some time.
As for the main problem of the thread, I've reread your OP a couple of times, but I'm not sure I'm fully clear on your steps.  First, unetbootin is expected to not work for arch.  Have you made an iso using `dd`?  Can you boot other live cds or usbs on the machine?  In other words, is it a limitation of your hardware, or have the isos you've tried for arch just not worked yet?
