Xserve G5 Cluster Nodes and Built-in distributed encoding in Compressor 4.

My IT friend just handed me down a rack full of XServe G5 nodes. ( They left the Apple camp as the result of Xserve being killed by Apple - i wonder if Adobe or Avid makes any highend servers boxes. LoL ). In the past running a render farm under QMaster was part voodoo part witchcraft. Apple is advertising " Built-in distributed encoding " as one of main features of Compressor4. Has any one tried to install compressor 4 on Xserve non-intel machines ? Where do i get the Qmaster from download file that App Store automatically dispatches to my NLE machine ?

Compressor 4 won't run on G5's.

  • Reformatting a XServe G5 Cluster Node

I got my hands on a pair of G5 cluster nodes (the ones with a single drive bay and no optical) and I need to intall Mac OSX server on it. I tried removing the hard drive and using my macBook Pro to install to it, but I can't install mac Os X using the apple partition map, since I am working from and intel machine.
The G5 Cluster node has no video card so I can't even plug in my external reader and install it from there.
A Little Help Please? I am not a server guy, I'm a video guy but this happens to have fallen into my hands.
    Thanks,
    Charles

    Hey Chuck,
You can install whatever partition map you need from the OS X Server installer. Before you begin the installation, go to "Utilities" and open Disk Utility.
Select the server's hard drive (be careful NOT to select your MacBook's drive, you don't want to erase that). Go to the "Partition" tab. Select "1 Partition" from the Volume Scheme popup. Then click on the "Options" button and and select "Apple Partition Map". Hit Apply. This should ensure that your XServe has the appropriate boot record.

  • Xserve Cluster node does not (really) switch on

    Hi.
I've got a pretty strange problem.
Today, after a long break, I have tried to switch on my Xserve G5 cluster node. The yellow ID light was constantly on, the power light was white, machine was powered on, and nothing happened. It did not boot, did not fail -- just sat there with both lights on.
Then, I tried to get into OF by using panel lights method -- it didn't work. No matter how long I was keeping status button pressed after a power on, nothing happened -- none of the activity lights were on or flashing.
Next thing I tried to do was to reset a PMU.
After that the situation is exactly the same except that the power light is no longer on -- although the machine starts up and the status light is on. I am still not able to enter any OF commands using front panel.
All in all, it looks like the bootstrap processor is on, but none of the G5s is getting up (for example, even if I take out all of the memory, nothing changes and no failures are indicated)
    Any ideas?

    Try this:
1 - Remove the battery from the machine for 24 hours. Replace.
    2 - Reset the PMU.
    3 - Try to boot.
If you still have a problem, disconnect the firewire cable from the front panel. Try to boot.
If you STILL have a problem, you're at the hardware change stage. It could be a number of problems, but it's likely either the main logic board, the power supply, or the front panel board.

  • PS3 Cluster node possible now or ever?...

    Hi,
    Here's a bit of a newb question...
The PS3 is really pushing the boundaries in terms of distributed processing, the 'Folding@Home' app now accessible via the xmb menu allows PS3's all over the world to contribute to huge scientific research projects.
It's seems that with the cell broadband engine in the PS3, 7 cores and the supposed 1.8 teraflops performance, there is quite a scope for a hefty cluster node right there!
Forgive me if I'm way off, because I'm really not overly familiar with cluster nodes and have never even attempted distributed processing etc, but if there's anyway in the future for my PS3 to lighten the load and increase project efficiency when editing in FCS, I am ALL for that!!!
Please share any comments and advice etc.
    Peace.

I doubt Apple will change its business model. Apple is a hardware company that produces software mainly for its own hardware.

  • Cluster node as a server

Is setting up a cluster node as a stand alone file server possible? What would it take?

Main concern is if there is a firmware stop point that expects a physical or logical link to a normal server before a cluster node will boot
OK, I'm confused. What makes you think a cluster node isn't a normal server?
The only difference between the XServe Cluster Node and the XServe (at least, the PowerPC one it's based on) is the single drive bay (vs.3) and lack of optical drive. That's it. It comes with the same version of the OS. The same ports, runs the same apps and does the same thing as the non-cluster node version.
Can a cluster node be put into firewire mode with the T option, followed by a drive restore from a pre-configured Mac X server disk image....avoiding all the command line stuff. Or for that matter...just wapping out the drive with a pre-configured Mac X server drive?
Sure. The only thing you can't do it put a second drive inside the machine since, by definition, it only has a single drive bay.

  • What are the preferred methods for backing up a cluster node bootdisk?

    Hi,
I would like to use flarcreate to backup the bootdisks for each of the nodes in my cluster... but I cannot see this method mentioned in any cluster documentation...
Has anybody used flash backups for cluster nodes before (and more importantly - successfully restored a cluster node from a flash image..?)
    Thanks very much,
    Trevor

Hi, some backround on this - I need to patch some production cluster nodes, and obviously would like to backup the rootdisk of each node before doing this.
What I really need is some advice about the best method to backup & patch my cluster node (with a recovery method also).
The sun documentation for this says to use ufsdump, which i have used in the past - but will FLAR do the same job? - has anyone had experiance using FLAR to restore a cluster node?
Or if someone has some other solutions for patching the nodes? - maybe offline my root mirror (SVM) - patch root disk - barring any major problems - online the mirror again??
    Cheers, Trevor

  • File Being processed in two cluster nodes

    Hi ,
We are having two cluster nodes and when my  adapter picks the file, the file is getting processed in 2 cluster nodes.
I believe the file should get processed in either of the cluster node but not in both cluster nodes.
Has any one faced this kind of situation in any of your projects where you might be having different cluster nodes.
    Thanks,

  • OES2 SP2a cluster node freeze

    Hi all.
I have a 3 node cluster based on OES2 SP2a fully patched. There are a coupe of resources: Master_IP and a NSS volume.
The cluster is virtualized on ESXi 4.1 fully patched, and vmware-tools are installed and up to date.
If i do an "rcnetwork stop" on a node, it remains with no network for about 20 seconds, and then freezes. Does not reboot. Only freezes. The resource is balanced correctly, but the server remains hanged.
This behaviour is the same on a server with a cluster resource on it and on a server with no cluster resource on it. Always hangs.
The correct behaviour should be a reboot, shouldn't?
    Any hints?
    Thanks in advance.

The node does not reboot because ....
9.11 Preventing a Cluster Node Reboot after a Node Shutdown
If LAN connectivity is lost between a cluster node and the other nodes in the cluster, it is possible that the lost node will be automatically shut down by the other cluster nodes. This is normal cluster operating behavior, and it prevents the lost node from trying to load cluster resources because it cannot detect the other cluster nodes. By default, cluster nodes are configured to reboot after an automatic shutdown.
On certain occasions, you might want to prevent a downed cluster node from rebooting so you can troubleshoot problems.
Section 9.11.1, OES 2 SP2 with Patches and Later
Section 9.11.2, OES 2 SP2 Release Version and Earlier
9.11.1 OES 2 SP2 with Patches and Later
Beginning in the OES 2 SP2 Maintenance Patch for May 2010, the Novell Cluster Services reboot behavior conforms to the kernel panic setting for the Linux operating system. By default the kernel panic setting is set for no reboot after a node shutdown.
You can set the kernel panic behavior in the /etc/sysctl.conf file by adding a kernel.panic command line. Set the value to 0 for no reboot after a node shutdown. Set the value to a positive integer value to indicate that the server should be rebooted after waiting the specified number of seconds. For information about the Linux sysctl, see the Linux man pages on sysctl and sysctl.conf.
    1.
As the root user, open the /etc/sysctl.conf file in a text editor.
    2.
If the kernel.panic token is not present, add it.
    kernel.panic = 0
    3.
Set the kernel.panic value to 0 or to a positive integer value, depending on the desired behavior.
No Reboot: To prevent an automatic cluster reboot after a node shutdown, set the kernel.panic token to value to 0. This allows the administrator to determine what caused the kernel panic condition before manually rebooting the server. This is the recommended setting.
    kernel.panic = 0
Reboot: To allow a cluster node to reboot automatically after a node shutdown, set the kernel.panic token to a positive integer value that represents the seconds to delay the reboot.
    kernel.panic = <seconds>
For example, to wait 1 minute (60 seconds) before rebooting the server, specify the following:
    kernel.panic = 60
    4.
    Save your changes.
9.11.2 OES 2 SP2 Release Version and Earlier
In OES 2 SP release version and earlier, you can modify the opt/novell/ncs/bin/ldncs file for the cluster to trigger the server to not automatically reboot after a shutdown.
    1.
Open the opt/novell/ncs/bin/ldncs file in a text editor.
    2.
    Find the following line:
    echo -n $TOLERANCE > /proc/sys/kernel/panic
    3.
Replace $TOLERANCE with a value of 0 to cause the server to not automatically reboot after a shutdown.
    4.
After editing the ldncs file, you must reboot the server to cause the change to take effect.

  • Distributed Transaction Coordinator not displaying remotely on a server core cluster node..

We setup a server core single node cluster (W2012 R2).  The MS DTC is running, and the Distributed Transaction Coordinator firewall rules are enabled.  I can connect to the firewall rules and compmgmt.msc remotely for this server.  When
I attempt to connect to the Component Services Management console with this server, the MS DTC object is not displayed.  Only the COM+ applications are displayed.   We've setup other server core instances with out clustering and DTC is displayed.

    Hi Steve,
We just finished the local test and found this behavior is by design. It’s expected that we can’t see the DTC remotely from component services for a cluster node.
In my lab, 2012R2 node3 is a single node cluster and has DTC role.

  • Will HANA node supports cluster (Initiator node and Eexecutor node)

    Hi Gurus,
In vertica DB supports below cluster concepts, Will HANA supports
    Initiator node and Eexecutor node
    1. client submits query to vertica cluster the node to which the client is connected is called the initiator node
    2.  Initiator node analyses query and distributes query plan to executor nodes
    3.   Executor nodes run query on local data set and return partial result to initator node
    Regards,
    Manoj.

    Hello,
as Vitaliy wrote - you will not find exactly identical equivalent in HANA database but also HANA database can offer similar functions.
In case you want to spread workload across several machines you should check:
SAP HANA Database Server Installation Guide (page 13 - 5.2 Distributed System; page 35 - Adding a Host to the System):
    https://service.sap.com/~sapidb/011000358700000604572011
Note: Master nameserver can logcally failover to other node. This can be seen as high availability.
In case you are interested in high availability on instance level - you might want to look as well at following guide:
SAP HANA Database Scaleout with Standby Host:

  • Intel Xserve/Cluster node

Are there any plans for a quad xserve and/or cluster node? We are looking into buying some machines for rendering soon, and the G5s are much more powerful right now, but the cluster nodes would look quite nice in our rack

Apple have not announced the next revision of the XServe, nor whether they'll be faster G5 or Intel processor-based.
Since Apple haven't announced it, no one here can tell you what any revision will look like, nor when it will be available.

  • Dead xserve cluster node

One of our Xserve Cluster Nodes (DP G5 2.0 GHz) died over the holidays. Pressing the power button does nothing... no lights, fans, etc. However, the red light inside the case is on. Is this a power supply problem, or does the red light indicate it is something else? (I tried plugging into a different UPS)

Update: It was not the power supply. Swapped supply with another machine and it seems to be something else. Any ideas?

  • Dispatcher and cluster node

    Hi,
While customizing the logon page and updating the authscheme.xml, there is a note which says as ": Changes made in Config Tool requires a restart of the Server to be reflected. All dispatcher and server nodes in the cluster must shutdown  "
Can any one please let me know how to shutdown the dispatcher and server nodes. What exactly they it mean?
    Thanks in advance.

Open SAP Management console , you can find server nodes and dispatacher which were in green color.
Right click the nodes and you can stop and start which restarts portal. Restart the server , changes will reflect

  • Render node and Serial Numbers

I want to setup an Xserve as a render node with compressor. Do I need a whole new serial number for that or what is the deal?

Not if you just want to have it as part of a distributed processing network. You won't be able to send a project directly from FCP. You will have to fully render your sequences and make reference movies out of them, and then use that to send to Compressor. But the only thing you have to install for that is the Qmaster node. It is on the installation disk for FCS. You can put it on as many computers as you want, with no license, but you will always need a cluster controller, which is the machine that has Compressor (FC Studio) on it.

    Hi Felyjos,
There have a article for the detail steps troubleshooting about this known issue, have you try it?
An Event 12317 showing access denied is caused when the NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users group is not a member of the BUILTIN\Users group in the domain. (As you might know, the local BUILTIN\Users group on a domain controller is mapped to the domain built-in
group Users. Therefore, the effect of removing NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users from the BUILTIN\Users group on a domain controller has a domain-wide effect.)
