Xserve G5 second PowerPC processor, where, thanks.

Hi there, good morning.
I've got a MAC Xserve G5 from work, it's got a single PowerPC 2GHz processor, and now 4GB of RAM (1GB originally).
What I'm looking to achieve here is a Dual processor machine, but I cannot seem to be able to find another processor for it anywhere, not even on eBay...
I've seen a few PowerPC G5 2GHz on sale, but not from Xserve machines originally, so I'm not sure they'll fit on my Xserve, I know for sure the heatsink won't fit at all but not sure about the actual processor...
I've tried every online shop I know, and nothing, maybe there is some shop somewhere else I dont know of and that I can buy another processor from?, in US maybe?
Any info on this, greatly appreciated, thanks

In the Netherlands my Apple Reseller ordered the processor, heatsink and heatsinkcover at the Apple Service Provider (CARD Services). The G5 processor in the Xserve G5 differs from the processor used in the first generation desktop G5's. If you order a replacement processor via your ASP, it's a DIY job.

  • Director PowerPC processors (PPC ) can't open the application because it is "not supported on this a

I created a projector in Adobe Director 11.5 for the Mac.
For some reason PowerPC processors (PPC ) can't open it because they received a message saying the application is "not supported on this architecture."
And idea if there is a way to make projectors compatible for the Mac PPC processors?
    Thanks,

Check your product version by typing "put the productVersion" into the message panel - if you don't get the response "11.5.9" then update the to latest patch by selecting the Update option from Director's Help menu. (I suspect you already are on 11.5.9, though, otherwise you wouldn't get this problem).
Next, go to the Publish Settings page, and under the projector tab you will notice an option to create the Mac projector as either a "Universal Binary" or an "Intel Binary"
Universal Binary will run natively on PPC Macs, and will run under Rosetta on Intel Macs running up-to-and-including OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard).
Intel Binary will run on all Intel Macs running OSX 10.5 and upwards.
Rosetta is a virtualisation layer built into OSX versions up to 10.6; It allows programs written for PPC to run on Intel Macs. Rosetta was dropped from OSX 10.7 (Lion), so a UB projector won't work on Lion.
    Hope that helps

  • Can you upgrade PowerPC processor to an Intel Processor in iBook G4?

I was wondering whether you could upgrade the processor in an iBook G4 to an Intel processor as I need an Intel processor to sync my iPhone 4 to iTunes and update adobe flash player and I dont want to upgrade to a more newer MacBook as I do not have the money at the moment and if you could update the processor to an Intel processor where could I get it done?
    I have an iBook G4
Running Mac OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger)
    12 inch
    With a PowerPC processor

    No such upgrades are possible.
On portable machines, generally the processor (which is the part that makes it PPC or Intel) is part of the logic board and these boards are very expensive. Even if they were available, the cost would be too high to justify and the rest of the hardware would be too old to keep up with the new board - so you'd be looking at a lot more money to get this machine up to spec (if it were an option).
Time to consider buying a new machine

  • Can I transfer docs between a MacBook with a Intel processor and a iMac with a PowerPC processor by using a usb cord?

Can I transfer docs/folders between a MacBook with a Intel processor and a iMAC with a PowerPC processor using a usb cord? Or by loading from the MacBook to a external drive and then to the Imac.

You need to use an external drive, FireWire cable, Ethernet cable, or wireless connection.

  • What type of format is the PowerPC processor?

Just a simple question, what type of format is the PowerPC processor? I know Intel processors on later Macs is GUID.

Apple Partition Map is the PowerPC partitioning scheme equiv to GUID on Intel Macs. However, the format is normally Macintosh HFS+ (Journaled)

  • PowerPC Processor not compatible with CS4 software...

I have the PowerMac G5 first release. I recently purchased the Adobe Master Collection. Some of the programs are not compatible with the PowerPC Processor. I just upgraded my RAM and OS so I would hate to have to buy a new MAC just to run these few programs. Is it possible to link the mini Mac to the G% and have the Intel required programs on the mini MAC? If so how does it work?

the sound or video programs will NOT run on PPC, period. Adobe is pretty clear about this.
yes, you will have to buy a new intel mac. I wouldn't get anything with the intel graphics or last year's closeouts. get the newest & most CPU / graphics you can afford. If you are in Mini territory, get the base one, add the faster CPU. do the RAM & HDD yourself, as long as you don't break anything, it won't viod the warranty.

  • I'm using an older iMac G5 (PowerPC) with Firefox and MacOs 10.5.8. I no longer am able to watch video clips because Firefox recently auto-updated to 3.6.24; is there an older version of FireFox that would work with my PowerPC, and where do I find it

I used to be able to watch video clips off a streaming website, but it's been getting more difficult and now it no longer works. I suspect that my older Power PC G5 Mac is not compatible with the newer Firefox version of 3.6.24. I suspect that if I used an older version of Firefox with my system, I could get back to watching video clips. Would this work, and if so, where can I download an earler version of Firefox that would be compatible with my Mac and MacOs 10.5.8?

You might want to consider extending the lifespan of your G5 by using a different operating system. I put [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lubuntu Lubuntu] on a G5 recently and it runs the newest Firefox just fine. Lubuntu (pronounced Loo-boon-two) is sort of an Ubuntu lite - a user-friendly version of Linux. There are many applications to choose from, and it's all free.
The PowerPC I did this on was one of the old Bondi Blue ones. Firefox had no problem running on it at all and has all plug-ins needed for video, audio, etc.. I gave it to a church and it's running fine for them.
You can download old versions of Firefox, but you'll just open yourself up to security problems if you do.
FYI: The Mac operating system is built on Linux.

  • What is the max  os upgrade available for power mac g5 w/powerpc processor

What is the max one can upgrade the os on a powerpc power mac g5

    Hi, 10.5.8...
    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
        * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)

  • NEW XSERVE (migrate from PowerPC G5?)

    Hey folks!
I just purchased a new XServe and was wondering how I can get my server migrated over from my Power PC G5. Obviously I'm not running Snow Leopard Server but rather Leopard Server on the G5. Can I just attach the XServe via firewire and "copy" it like I would two iMacs?
    Thanks in advance!
    -JD

This is really the place to start - it is Apple's official 10.6 upgrading versus migrating documentation:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Migrationv10.6.pdf
Because of the PPC <-> Intel thing I think you're forced to migrate versus upgrade but the process is spelled out in some detail.
    Good luck,

  • Trying to install Office Mac 2011 on PowerBook G4 with PowerPC processor

...won't install and says it requires an Intel based processor...I guess this means I have to get a new processor if I want to run Office 2011? I am quite annoyed because the software package says NOTHING on the outside about this requirement. If it had, I wouldn't have spent over $100!

Why do you need Office 2011?
Office v.X served me perfectly well for the entire PowerPC era.

  • Quicksilver/Firefox: Which PowerPC Processor?

I thought i knew my Quicksilver +(the actual one pictured in my avatar)+ had a PowerPC 7450, but i'm trying to run Firefox compiled for 7450 and it crashes when run.
My searches aren't finding that spec.
    System Profiler reports:
    Machine Name: Power Mac G4
    Machine Model: PowerMac3,5
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 733 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
    Memory: 1.5 GB
    Bus Speed: 133 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.2.5f1
*Does this not have a 7450?*
*Anybody have an idea why Firefox (Shiretoko) 3.5.5 for 7450 would crash as soon as it's run?*

    Hi, Cut'n Paste -
Your QS 733MHz model originally came with a 7450 processor. I have no idea if this makes any difference, but it does not have an L3 cache - in the QS family, L3 caches came only with single-processor models with speeds greater than 800MHz, and with all dual processor models.
Whether that makes a difference is something that only the developers could answer; contacting them, as a brody suggested, would be the thing to do.
