XServe G5 shuts down - hardware error ? How to verify ?

I experience a strange problem: From time to time (varies between weeks and days, happens more often recently) the server reboots. But not just the server, even the router that the server connects to.
First I believed in a DoS attack, but now more and more feel that it is a hardware issue.
Attached is the notification mail the server sends out. Maybe you find something strange there and can give me a hint.
I noticed two things:
The system controller ambient temperature is unusually high. Could this be the reason why the server restarts ? Are the sensors connected with cables which I may check ? But the number sounds strange; like something "out of range" - 65536/1024 = 64
Is it possible to turn off rebooting in case of temperature problems ?
However why is then the router affected as well ? I also suspect the UPS to have a malfunction. But it cannot be checked for that. Anyway, I removed the UPS and will see how it turns.
How can I check the hardware of the server ? I know that there is a diagnostic software at the system DVD... can I run this without booting from it ? Any other tools (beside Apple's own) that could be helpful to solve this issue.
Any help is appreciated.

When looking at a LIPS (a less-interruptable power supply; they've never truly been "uninterruptible", after all), there are two factors to consider: wattage, and reserve power. These are how much power can be supplied continuously, and how long that power can be supplied, respectively.
The local standard-issue LIPS is an APC Smart-UPS 1500 series. That unit runs an Intel Xserve server box and its few associated (core) giblets nicely; with an LCD display, USB hub, network switch.
With a USB connection to the host, this APC unit is automatically recognized by default by Mac OS X Server 10.5 Leopard Server.
Typical run-time with an outage with the 1500 watt unit is about five to maybe fifteen minutes before the shutdown is triggered. This range depending on how hard the box is running. (Yes, the upper-bound on the run-time is a little murky here. It's (also) definitely subject to the age of the battery in the LIPS.) Typical power outages at the sites where these are deployed are less than this range.
With the local preference for (unnecessary?) redundancy, it's typical to run parallel LIPS; one per box. That consistency also means fewer (different) spares need be stocked. Though with the Intel Xserve with dual power supplies configured, it's also feasible to run a pair of larger LIPS and to split them across some number of servers to gain some economy.

  • MacBookPro shutting down at error since upgrade

Since I upgraded to Mountain Lion yesterday my system shuts down and restarts when it comes across minor errors, such as non-responding app that take a while to unfreeze - esp if I am on VPN remote for my work. This never happened before. It gives no warning, the screen goes black and the computer restarts.I do not get to save anything I am working at the time it happens, so it's very aggrevating.
I am thinking it has to do with the upgrade to Mountain Lion.
I might be wrong, of course.
Anyone know why this is happening? And how should I prevent it?
    I have a MacBookPro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067 Mhx DDR2, OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion.
I hadly have anything on my laptop, I store everything from music to photos to documents in my external HD, as not to bog down my laptop.
    Any help/insight would be appreciated.
    Thank you!
    M.

I haven't had this problem until recently and I recently calibrated my battery.
Look at your system logs in your Console application for any clues.
Looking at it logically though, I would say it's a battery issue seeing it was working fine before calibration, and it doesn't shutdown on the AC adapter.

  • Captivate file suddenly unable to record/import/copy and paste - shuts down with error message.

    Hi
I have a project with lots of recording and I am now unable to do any of the following.  Suddenly when I try to:
    add a new recording slide
import a recording slide from another file (one by one)
copy and paste a recording slide from another file
Captivate  freezes and shuts down because it incorporated an error.  Then it tells  me that another instance of captivate is recording and to shut it down  when I re-open it and try to record again. (there isn't another open)
    I have tried:
opening it and renaming it and shrinking the file size, but if I need to do one more recording it freezes on the new file.
opening a new file and recording.  this works, but the problem is that I cannot import or paste the other slides from the original file into the new file to make it complete.  I also cannot import this new recording into my original file to make it complete.
opening the backup and trying to import or record.
saving it under a new name and trying to import or record.
    Any sugestions?

  • Comp shuts down with error message...

Hey all, a little help please! I'm having a little trouble with my friends 30gig iPod. FYI I have set up two 20gig iPods in my home with no problems. The comp (a Compaq running Windows XP) recognizes his iPod and updates the new songs from iTunes but the computer shuts down completely when songs have transfered. We get an error message that states "Serious error has occured..." I disconnected the iPod and all the songs have transfered and play fine. I also noticed that when the iPod is connected I cannot access the it in iTunes (the icon shows up but I cannot access the songs - is this because we have his set to automatically update songs?) I have run the latest iPod updater from Apple and the latest iTunes update and we tried resetting and rebooting the iPod. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

    hi justin!
let's also capture a minidump of the crash and send it to the Apple engineers to analyze.
To set up your machine to capture a minidump, right click on "My Computer", select "Properties", select the "Advanced" tab, select the "Startup and Recovery" Settings button, select "small memory dump" from the popup. When it crashes, look for the MiniDump file. It's usually in the folder "C:\WINDOWS\Minidump" and is called something like Mini<number>-<number>.dmp.
And then let a Host know. It doesn't hurt to put in the URL to this discussion thread, so that whoever gets it has some context. Also give as much information about the context of the crash (in the email) as you can.
    love, b

  • FireFox doesn't appear to shut down completly when I quit, when restart it asked to exit FireFox eventhought it closed. When shut down computor error messeage comes up ' ns AppShell: Event Window end now and computor with shut down using 5.0.1

This happens after first time opened and closed. If I try to open from desk top, hour glass shows for a few seconds then goes away and FireFox doesn't open.

  • Did download of 3.6 12.took ages, and computor auto shut down when done how do i know if its installed?

firefox indicated a new download version was advised.I indicated go ahead.the download took several hours and i checked every 1/2 hour
but at 10.30 my computer had shut down.I cant find anywhere that tells me if it was applied? ah I see below i am on 3.6.10 still what should i do now?

When you skip an update, as you did by missing the 3.6.11 update, Mozilla downloads the entire Firefox package which isn't compressed. You end up downloading ~10.4Mb instead of a ~2.4Mb update, or a full, compressed Firefox_setup package that's ~7.7Mb. Not a big deal if you have a hi-speed connection (about a minute or so to download ~10.4Mb), but it sounds like you are on dial-up connection. Unfortunately for you, the 3.6.12 version was released just a few days after 3.6.11 was released due to a security fix that wasn't known of at the time Mozilla decided to release 3.6.11 - very rare for a series of releases to occur that quickly, but it is reassuring that Mozilla can respond with a security fix in like 48 hours from notification of the problem to releasing the patched version to their users.
My advice is to download the installer (Firefox_setup) and install it over your current 3.6.10 version. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

  • Since yesterday my iPhone 3gs won't shut down automatically. How do I fix this issue?

Yesterday I was using my iPhone with google maps to find some places I needed to visit. First thing I noticed was that my battery had gone from 100% to 26% in a very short period of time. Then I discovered that it wasn't going into its usual standby mode and nothing I could think to do has corrected the issue. I turned it off, I did the reboot. I checked all my settings.  Any suggestion to fix this issue? Thank you.
Oh yeah, I did read 5 pages of posts trying to see if this was a known issue but didn't want to go further.<G>

  • Ever since I upgraded my ipad mini to ios 7.1.2, it sporadically shuts down, anyone know how to fix this?

I have an ipad mini that keeps shutting down ever since I upgraded to ios 7.1.2.

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.
