I have a G5 xserve that will not boot. It only goes to the gray screen with the apple logo in the center and the fans are running on super high.
~ Single 250g drive (startup drive)
~ 2 80 gig striped drives.
~ 10.5 OS
So far

~ Won't boot to install disc
What I have done
~ Ran disk verify on all drives, they all returned ok
~ Using TDM tried to install to 250g drive - won't boot same screen
~ Broke the raid

Intended for use with my G4 Mac Mini, but I tried it out with an Xserve and was delighted to find that it recognised all three Hitachi drives, the software raid, etc. The diagnostics test USB, firewire, memory, etc. You can rebuild the directory, defrag files, etc. Fits nicely into the firewire port on the front of the Xserve. Booting up from this small firewire device is also very, very fast.
The only problem you may have is getting hold of this small piece of hardware -- Micromat have it available via mail order and it sells out very quickly. Also, if you are based in the UK, the Post Office will charge VAT and handling. However, even given this, it still works out less than the price I have seen advertised by some UK retailers.

Xserve G4 Won't boot from Anything

Everyone:
I have a G4 Xserve (slot load) with 2 GB of RAM installed. It was running X.3.9 just as happy as a lark. I migrated all users from the server to use it as a test environment. My first test was to upgrade it to Tiger, which so far has not gone very smoothly.
The Xserve has all 4 bays populated. Bays 1&2 are mirrored using Apple's RAID software, this is the system drive. Bays 3&4 are set as a RAID 0.
My Upgrade goes like this: I inserted the Tiger Server CD (no DVD drive), double-clicked the installer and the server rebooted. The installed seemed to go smooth, but I did have to walk away from it towards the end. When I came back, the server was stuck at a blue screen and a moveable mouse pointer. Couldn't do anything else.
This forced a hard reset, of which the same thing happened. So I thought, no big deal, let's just redo the installation. Insert Tiger CD again, hold down C key....server boots from hard drive and gets stuck.
Weird.
Ok, let's try booting from the Panther CD. Reboot server, hold down mouse button, eject Tiger CD, insert Panther CD, reboot, hold C key....server boots from hard drive and gets stuck.
Dang. This was supposed to be an easy upgrade.
Just so things aren't confused, I pull out the drives with the Raid 0 (Bays 3 & 4). Same process.
OK, maybe it's the Raid on the system drive, so I pull out one of the drives. Same boot process.
Reset the PRAM, just for grins, no change.
Alright, let's see if I can force it to recognize the CD, pull out all the drives and put in a spare, brand new drive from the shelf.
Same thing, won't boot from CD. Neither Panther or Tiger. At least I get the blinking icon that there's no OS installed.
Put the #1 system drive back in, connect an external firewire CD Drive, still won't boot from CD. I still get to a blank blue screen, though.
Try booting in Single User Mode, I still get the same thing, boots from disk to blue screen.
Now I've spent an afternoon of my time and another techs time and we're both scratching our heads. I recalled that I could also issue boot commands via the Sys ID button. Dig out manual, find the combination, same story. Boots from hard drive to the blue screen and stops.
Seems like any input at boot time is being ignored, although it will eject the CD if the mouse is held down. I've verified that the machine is not locked (the light is off). I also opened it up to make sure that the lock switch wasn't partially stuck. Not sure if there's anything else to check.
Thoughts?

No. Apple changes the bootROMs from model to model so you can't use the same install disc on different models. It could their way of dealing with piracy.
Example; Say I bought a new MacBook Pro and I had an iMac that was still running Leopard. I couldn't use the Snow Leopard install disc from the new MBP to install SL on the iMac.

Xserve G5 - won't boot from disk, only network

I recently installed Yellow Dog 4.0 on a drive (far left) in a 3 bay G5 and I cannot get it to boot from the disk in the drive (not even by lighting the 3rd light on the lightshow). However, when I take the drive out and put it into a different G5 server that has only a single bay it works fine. I've also put the drive from the working G5 into the new G5 and it tries to boot from the network as well. I've looked at the Open Firmware for both G5's and they seem to be the exact same, including the 'boot-device':

When installing, I took the default partitions:
sda2 (1M) type=AppleBoot
sda3 (76439M) type=ext3, mountpoint=/

I had the same problem. I found a very illogical fix to boot my G5 listed below. When it won't boot I take the side panel and the plastic shield out of the tower and then boot. This makes the fans run at full speed but in my case it starts right up. After it starts just replace both panels and the fan will revert to a slower speed and the computer will continue. I don't know why it works for me but I have found that others on the forum have had it work for them also.

Xserve G5 won't boot off Hardware RAID partition

I'm running an Xserve G5, 2.0 GHz single processor, OS X Server 10.4.5 with an Apple Hardware RAID card with 3 500GB drive modules in a RAID 5. The RAID is partitioned into two partitions, one for the system and one for data. After installing a video card, the Xserve will not boot off of the system partition on the RAID. It will boot just fine off a clone of that exact partition on a firewire drive, which is how I have it functioning at the moment. I have tried erasing the system partition on the RAID and re-installing the Server software but whenever I try to boot it it gives me the flashing folder Icon. I have tried resetting the NVRAM as well as restoring the functional backup of the system to no avail.
Any ideas? (I have run disk utility, DiskWarrior, repaired permissions etc.) I also checked the status of the RAID and it is in optimal condition. The data partition seems to be just fine and the system partition seems normal when booted from the external drive.

Harry, I just saw your post. I went through the same pain last fall, and it WAS resolved through Apple Support, but you aren't going to like the solution. Simply as background, during the pre-deployment testing of our Xserve, we were having problems with the Apple BTO SCSI card (really, an LSI Logic 22320) and swapped it out with an ATTO UL4D. Something in the card removal/replacement caused our Apple Hardware RAID card to go into the same mode as yours, where it would work fine as a RAID 5 (two LUNs, 50 GB and 417 GB, over 3x250 GB ADMs) but would not boot. Apple Support and I concluded that something had become corrupted in the firmware or boot code on the Apple Hardware RAID card, but they did not have a file to use to flash it, so they swapped out the card under our support contract, and that fixed it. I still believe that, if I had had a file to flash the card with using the megaraid command, that the original card would have been fixed. FYI the new card has Firmware Version: A131, BIOS Version G117, the old card had Firmware Version: A130, BIOS Version G117. Completely unrelated to this, I've had a RADAR bug report (RADAR #4350243) open since last November that the Apple Hardware RAID card fails to fully flush its write caches on graceful power down. I've got a test case that is 100% reproducible, causes mystery garbage blocks from space. I'd suggest that you turn the write caches off on all LUNs on your Apple Hardware RAID card as a workaround until this is fixed. LSI Logic (the Apple Hardware RAID card is a rebranded LSI Logic card) found and fixed this bug on a later firmware rev from Apple's version. No update is available yet from Apple.

Xserve G4 Won't Boot Off Tiger CD; Other OSXS G4 Boot Drive

The CD part is probably because the optical drive is bad, but I installed Tiger server onto a known-good drive module and it will boot another Xserve, but not the one with the bad optical. It will, however, boot off of a drive with Panther Server. I can also not boot the bad Xserve with a boot drive from another Xserve of the same model.
Any ideas?

Apparently, you can run a G4 Xserve without a video card under Server 10.3; you can't run it without one under 10.4... Threw a video card in and it booted just fine. I had no idea that it wouldn't boot without it!
Why was there no video? The other server in the office is a G5 Xserve which was built sans video. The guy that set it up couldn't do it headless so he pulled the card from a G4 Xserve and never put it back.

Intel Xserve won't boot from 3rd party drive in ADM

Right, I've got a Late 2006 Xserve Dual 2.66 with the normal non-RAID SAS/SATA board, which has been running fine for 2 years with a pair of non-Apple Seagate Barracuda ES 250GB drives (Bay 1 & 2), and an original 80GB ADM in Bay 3 as a spare boot disk.
Bay 1 & 2 are set up using SoftRAID and are partitioned into a boot volume (30GB) and a data volume (200GB), both RAID 1 mirrors. The boot volume is cloned nightly to Bay 3 (single volume, set up using Disk Utility). Data is backed up to a utility machine, so this is arrangement lets me handle any single drive failing.
This arrangement has worked fine for 2 years, and allows me to remotely boot off Bay 3 and run DiskWarrior or other disk maintenance software on the normal boot drive without having to drive across town with a firewire drive. I originally started with Mac OS X Server 10.4, but I'm now on Mac OS X Server 10.6.4.
Where things have come unravelled is, I need to upgrade the two 250GBs to something larger. I didn't realise that the Intel Xserve is pretty fussy with ADM sleds and the model of SATA drive they will work with. I didn't have any issues when I set up the Barracuda ES 250GB so wasn't expecting any problems this time.
I bought a pair of Seagate Constellation ES 500GB drives (well 3 actually, one to keep on the shelf as a spare).
I installed them in the sleds and inserted them in the Xserve. The green power LEDs came on but the drives weren't recognised in Disk Utility or System Profiler. I then added the jumper to set them to 1.5Gb/s and then they mounted. I went through my normal process of cloning the OS to them from a standard disk image I have of a known working OS install, ran Disk Utility to repair disk & repair permissions, Disk Warrior to check everything else (my standard paranoid procedures). Set the startup disk to the new install and rebooted. No joy, just the flashing question mark folder. Reboot with the option key, and the new volume doesn't appear in the list of available boot options.
I installed the drives in a firewire enclosure, and it booted without any problems, so it's not a corrupt install, it's something to do with the ADM sleds.
So to go back to basics, I tried initialising a single drive as a single volume and installed 10.6.4 server fresh from the DVD. Same result, no boot when in installed in ADM sled, boots fine in firewire case.
Erased drive, changed formatting to APM (rather then GPT), cloned OS, etc. Won't boot when in ADM sled, boots fine from firewire case. So that screws the theory that drives have to be GPT to boot on Intel hardware.
So I ordered a set of WD RE3 500GB drives (x 3) and repeated this whole process. Same deal, boots fine in firewire, won't boot when installed in ADM. GPT vs APM doesn't make any difference.
Try #3. Ordered desktop variants rather than server class drives. So armed with a pair of WD Caviar Black 500GB. Same deal, boot fine from firewire, will not boot when installed in ADM. Also required jumpers for 1.5GB/s and also the undocumented pins 7&8 (apparently this might be related to the new Advanced Format they are using)
Try #4
A pair of Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB. This is where it gets tricky. One of the Barracuda will boot the Xserve when installed in an ADM, and one will not. So 2 Barracuda 7200.12, both same model number (ST3500418AS), both same firmware (CC38), yet they behave differently.
Try #5
Barracuda ES.2 250GB (x 3). Won't boot in ADM, will boot firewire.
Try #6
WD Caviar SE16 250GB (WD2500KS)
Boots in ADM (Yay!!) and firewire
Try #7
WD Caviar SE16 500GB x 2 (WD5000AAKS)

I've managed to get access to G5 Xserve (2.3DP) so I've repeated all this testing on it as well. The G5 doesn't care about the model of drive and boots from any of them using a 10.5.6 install with APM formatted drives.
I've tried all these drives in 4 different models of ADM sled. One thing I have determined is that the model of sled determines if you need to use the 1.5GB/s jumper. I have 2 sleds from G5's, they require the jumper, a 80GB Intel ADM sled with separate data and power plugs requires the jumper, and an Intel 160GB ADM sled with the ribbon cable and combined data/power plug doesn't require the 1.5GB/s jumper. APM vs GPT formatting again makes no difference.
So on the Intel machine, the drives work in the sleds, appear as normal drives on desktop or in Disk Utility when logged in, and also appear as normal drives when connected via SSH if Auto Login is disabled. So to me they appear to be working drives.
It appears to me that something changed at a low level between the Barracuda ES and ES.2 generations of drives (for WD drives as well since the Caviar SE16 that boots is a similar age to the Barracuda ES)
So then why won't it boot from them? Is there some magic dance I've missed?
And how come one of the 7200.12 will boot, while another identical model won't?
Any tips or suggestions greatly appreciated.

I don't have an answer for you, but you deserve thanks for all the useful hardware information you posted from your trial-and-error testing.
My impression has that the XServes need specific kinds of firmware and hardware monitors on their drives in order for everything to function smoothly. My own efforts swapping drives in ADMs has produced "mixed results" to put it mildly. It would be so much easier if we knew what kinds of drives worked properly in what kinds of ADMs and on which Macs/XServes.

XServe won't boot from any drive, but recognizes them in OS X Installer

I know I have another post here but this is a different issue, and I've already fixed that one thanks to Camelot .
I just received an 2 used xserves for work. One booted into OS X Server fine, so I scrubbed it and reinstalled without issue.
The second however never booted into an install. That is, I never found it on my network when I started it up and when I pushed the power button it would turn off immediately, suggesting that there was no OS on the disk or that the xserve couldn't find it. I didn't have a spare monitor to plug into it (surprisingly) so I just chalked it up to the fact that it was a new disk and hadn't had OS X Server installed on it.
Now I have a spare monitor, I've gone and installed OS X Server on the xserve. It boots from the DVD just fine, runs through the installer, then when it goes to restart, it won't boot from the hard drive that it just installed OS X Server on, it'll just boot back from the DVD unless I pop it out. If I let it boot up without the DVD in it, I'll get the standard Folder with a ?.
At first I thought it was the drive, so I installed OS X Server on another drive. Still wouldn't boot to that drive, so I booted from the DVD and repaired the disks in Disk Utility. Still nothing. I booted to DVD again and when I went to Startup Disk, it actually did show my disks with their respective OS X Server installs.
When I boot the machine holding alt/option, the system doesn't show my drives, only the DVD if it's in the slot.
I figured ok, this has to be the drives, so I swapped them with those of the identical xserve in the rack below, but my top xserve wouldn't boot from those drives either. Somewhat expectedly however, the bottom xserve would boot the drives that I took out of the first one.
Now I'm just stumped. Any ideas?
PS, drives are unlocked.

G4 XServe won't boot from CD

Newbie to XServe here...
I bought a used G4 XServe DP with 4 installed HDs and "Pre-Installed" (No Disks or SNs provided) OS 10.2
When it boots from the system drive, it immediately goes to the Setup Assistant, and I get to the point where I have to enter the software SN. Since I don't own 10.2 Server, I bought a copy of OS 10.4 Server.
Now I can't get the system to boot from the 10.4 CD or DVD, it always seems to boot from the HD despite following the "Boot from CD" instructions doc I accessed here on Apple's site.
Also, the SN it asks for is a different scheme than the one provided with 10.4, (the first digit is a single letter) while the 10.4 SN starts out XSVR.
Any help would be appreciated! And Thanks!

First, a 10.4 serial number is not going to work with a 10.2 installation, so you're going to have to (re)install Mac OS X Server 10.4 to get this machine to work.
So the questions are:
What happens when you try to boot from CD?
Does it ignore it completely? eject it? try to boot from it and fail?
Have you checked the front panel enclosure lock is open?
(the XServe won't boot from CD/DVD if the enclosure is locked)
Does the OS recognize the drive once the system is booted (you should be able to log in via SSH or the console port while the system is waiting for Server Assistant to do it's thing).
The XServe G4 had an option for CD-RW or DVD drive. It's possible you have the CD drive in which case it won't read the DVD drive.

Xserve 1,1 won't boot from new ADM

I have an Xserve1,1 (3GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon with 16GB RAM) running 10.5.8 on the original 80GB AM. I want to upgrade to 10.6.x and a larger boot drive. I am aware of the problems with third party drives so I bought a 160GB ADM. I was able to install 10.6 without a problem, but the Xserve won't boot. I knew this was not a supported drive so I bought a 1GB ADM, which is officially supported, but had the same result. I am installing from a retail DVD of OS X Server 10.6.3 Rev 1 that I bought factory sealed. Any suggestions?

The XServe 1,1 (Late 2006 - "Woodcrest") does not support ADMs higher than 750GB as detailed in this Apple Support Article:

The XServe 2,1 (Early 2008 - "Harpertown") does support 1TB ADMs.
It's possible your model XServe may support non-Apple branded 1TB drives instead? However the only way of you knowing if it does is by browsing/searching this forum to see if others have done this with details of what drive manufacturer they used, or, purchasing a number of 1TB drives and trying them yourself until you're successful.

Xserve begins to power up but does not boot

Top row of activity lights flash

My server was stored in the original box for 12 months now, when I reuse it, he presented the above problems

Thank you, Khashoggi. Reseating the ADM's did generate a different result in Disk Utility. The mirror had a state of "degraded" after reseating because one of the drives had an error. I began a rebuild but it was set to take 4 hours so I just re-built the mirror and re-installed the OS. I would have let it rebuild but it was a brand new instal; no configuration done at all so it was much quicker to just reinstall.
I've got the machine back to the state it was in before the issue and I've created both a Time Machine and Carbon Copy Clone backup of the System in case of further issues.

Another annoying "won't boot off firewire" thread

OK, I work at a small charter school with only a single Intel Xserve ("late 2006" model 1,1).
We have an external GRaid firewire 800 hard drive (this has RAID 0 internally, but appears to the computer to be a single drive). This boots the Xserve just fine when hooked to USB, but won't boot the Xserve when attached via firewire (either 800 or 400). I'm at a loss here, because the drive is supposedly firewire bootable. I do have the drive partitioned, it is GUID, and I've created and booted from many partitioned external drives in the past (although I have never booted this Xserve from external firewire - this is the first time I've tried it with this machine).
I have a keyboard and monitor actually hooked to the Xserve for now, so I can easily select the "option" key at bootup method and simply select my boot disc. This drive does not show up when hooked up to firewire, but shows up immediately when hooked to USB (but this is far too slow for our purposes).
What am I missing? (besides my brain, that is...)

Turns out the drive manufacturer was simply lying. I called them directly and they tried to give me the runaround about them "not supporting the Xserve" and that I would have to call Apple. At any rate, their attitude demonstrated quite quickly that they knew perfectly well the drive wasn't actually firewire bootable. Too bad as the device was nicely made and very fast on firewire 800. It has been exchanged at the place of purchase for a different firewire 800 drive which is bootable and works perfectly.

(And yes, I'm familiar with all popular RAID configurations. The purpose of fast drive was specifically to maintain a high-speed bootable clone, so when one of the drives in the raid 0 fails I can quickly switch over to booting from the external device. We also maintain both on-site and off-site backups. Would love to set them up with a RAID 5 or high-capacity mirrored array on 10k drives, but when working in the education environment, one often has to make due as best as possible with limited funding.)

Server won't boot from RAID mirrored pair

Some months ago we updated an OS X 10.4.7 server with a software raid pair of disks to 10.4.8 and were rewarded with a machine that sticks at the black-on-grey Apple logo with no cog wheel displayed. At that time I just bought a couple of new and larger disks, reinstalled OS X Server, updated with combo updates rebooted a couple of times to be sure and all has been well until tonight when our system manager tried to install Retrospect which required a reboot and, suddenly it's hanging at the Apple Logo again. Such cruel irony...
Booting from the install CD I can mount the raid, and apart from a handful of permissions needing fixing, Disk Utility says the pair is fine. Although Startup Disk lets it be selected as the startup volume, the problem persists and still won't boot.
Does anybody have any thoughts as to how to cure this problem reasonably quicky in way that preserves as much as possible of the existing installation. My only idea is to try bless(8) to fix the boot behaviour of the volume. However, its man page doesn't discuss blessing raid mirrors. Is there anything special required?
I'd also like to know what caused the problem in the first place, and how to prevent it in future.

You say it has been working so I can't really tell you why it acts up now.
But the raid was setup using 10.4 Disk Util (RAID ver. 2 sw.)?
Tried diskutil checkraid disk3 in Terminal (from DVD)?
Tried running DiskWarrior?
A customer who bought a pair of new larger third party drives for his Xserve G5 and put them in his old 250GB drive bay carrriers couldn't get it working with sw RAID (I didn't look at it myself).

Computer Won't Boot Up

Here is my issue, my computer one day was working fine and the next it won't boot properly.
System Specs: Satellite T235D-S1345RD (Laptop) - Windows 7 (64bit) - BIOS 1.7 - 4gb RAM -
I have gotten the computer booted one time. I am unsure why it did that time but did not do it another time.
Since that one time I put the computer in hibernate and when I tried to bring it out it told me it failed when coming out of hibernate so it went to reboot and now won't boot.
Here are the few steps I have done to try and get it working. When it boots up it gives me an error message (says that power failed or for some reason it did not boot)
I have ran "Repair Computer" and it does not do anything. I try start windows normally and it goes no where.
So I then tried F8 and got into the Advanced Boot Menu. First one I tried was Start Windows From Last Known Good Configuration. (or something like that I forget the exact wording)
When it does that the computer will start to boot up go to the "Windows Loading" screen and then it flashes a blue screen (there are words there but it flashes so quickly I cannot read it) and it goes back to the boot screen and acts like it is restarting and continues in that loop.
Next step - Enter F8 again tried "Repair Computer" and it loads to a black screen with a Cursor but nothing ever happens. I have given it over 30 min and nothing happens.
So next step- I enter F8 again and try to boot up in safe mode and again when it loads it flashes a blue screen and then nothing.
EDIT - I found how to show the blue screen. It says UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. Not sure what else I should do after I get that error message. Message Reads:
It reads UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME and says if it's the first time I've seen the error screen, to restart the computer. Then it tells me if it appears again, to check and make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
"If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode."

Next Step: I come to you guys here on this forum. I am a bit perplexed and lost at what to do. I wonder if this is a virus but I cannot get the computer to respond to try to get into it to check.
Ideas? Advice? What should I try? I can get into the F8 menu but not sure what else I should try. I will try anything to get this computer up and running!

The 24 character failure ID usually indicates HDD is failing/has failed. You need to replace it with a new one.

If you're under warranty, HP would send you replacement HDD.
If you're not, buy any branded 2.5" SATA 9.5mm thick internal laptop HDD and replace it yourself. But HDD of at least same capacity HDD as the one that came with your laptop (640gb) so that recovery media would work -
Go through page 56-58 in the Manual for replacement procedure. It's quite simple DIY job.

If you've not yet created the Recovery media to restore the factory settings after replacement, you have to order a set of Recovery USB from HP.
For salvaging the data from old HDD, I suggest you take out the drive. Connect it to another PC using SATA to USB adapter - copy all the files you need.

Satellite m300 won't boot! please help!

Hi,
I've got a bit of an issue here.. I have a Satellite m300.. a white one..
and it won't boot... I've had this very issue before but it turned out to be an external USB HDD that stopped it from booting up but now even with everything removed it still won't boot.
And it was fine until yesterday, it just gave up.. I am away from home for work so I have all the work stuff and unfortunately without my recovery cd, but my guess is that it won't even read it..
So this is what happens..
turn on..
all light come on.. including power and all the white lights around the keypad..
and then maybe 5 sedconds later caplock and numlock(?) green lights flash..
then it's a dead still.. no HDD activities or sound.. just dead quite..
the screen remains black blank through out..
it seems to get stuck here before reaching the post screen.
i thought the power button usually took more than just a push to turn off? it instantly swithces off with a single push of the power button..
I think this laptop is like on sleep or something and can't seem to wak up.. maybe?
And it has vista.
Please help.. I have some important work files I need to recover at least before formatting..
and that has to wait till I get home which won't be for a month or so..
which also lets me take it back for warranty as well..
any help appreciated!!!

Just removed all components. I reset the CMOS. I then reconnected the 20pin and 4pin, 1 stick ram, and the video card (no ide devices, no mouse, keyboard cd drives) and the monitor doesn't show up. I also tried another monitor so it isn't the monitor.
Could it have a bad AGP port?
Any other suggestions? I am thouroughly stumped. Also the power and reset buttons don't work no matter what configuaration I put the front panel connectors in. The Power LED is lit up and it doesn't work and the reset light is off and it doesn't work.
Also noticed one of my fans connected to one of the two other fan pins on the motherboard isn't working.
What a nightmare.

Mid 2010 MacBook Pro won't boot past blue screen

I've been having problems booting up my MacBook. I can't get past the blue screen. It went from booting slow at the grey apple logo screen to not booting up at all. Is it a problem with my hard drive? I also have boot camp running as well, but I can still see the boot camp drive for windows and my OS X drive, as well as my installation disk when I have it inserted when I hold the option key at start up.
I'm still able to run windows on it without any problems when I pick the windows drive. I tried different methods from different forums but I'm just not getting through. I tried holding 'c' to boot up from cd and I let it run over night but it never got past the grey apple screen with the gradient wheel (still spinning). I had already used time machine to back everything up before this happened since I was able to boot up properly (but slowly). Can anyone help? It's driving me nuts, and I can't remember what os/firmware version I'm running.

n your signature you said you are running 10.6.3. So let’s assume you are running Snow Leopard.
It sounds like your diagnosis of disk problems is correct. The OS X partition may be corrupt.
Try booting in Safe Mode.

Try again to boot in normal mode.
If it will boot in Safe Mode but not in normal mode then you could have some 3rd-party software preventing the boot or you could have a corrupt disk or OS.
Boot as from the startup manager (Boot - option) and then select the installation disk.
Hopefully that will work better than starting with the Boot-C option.
Then try to repair the system disk.
Start the Disk Utility.
Perform the steps in http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5836.
If it repairs OK but still won’t boot reinstall OS X.
