Xserve not seeing boot drive

Wanting to make a cloned (carbon copy cloner) boot drive for our xserve. Mount a new drive - fromat it and then clone over the boot drive. Go to system preferences and start up disk and the new drive is shown as bootable. However the xserve will not start up from it - showing the flashing hard drive. Using the very latest Snow Leopard Server Software. ny ideas appreciated.

Run diskutil list and look at the partition map:
/dev/disk0
   #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
   0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *121.3 GB   disk0

   2:                  Apple_HFS MacHD                   120.5 GB   disk0s2
Are you using GUID partition or does it say APM?   You may need to reformat the drive laying down a GUID map.

just bought a brand new 1TB seagate hard drive and put it in my new Xserve (model 3,1)
the server doesn't mount/detect/see the hard drive
and i tested the drive with two different drive trays, both gave green lights but no hard drive was mounted in the o/s
the hard drive itself is fine, i was able to format it and copy files to it with my mac pro
is there anything special needed to make this drive come out of hiding?

actually I just did the same, replaced an 400GB with a 1TB and I am also using a 80GB tray.
I found out that at least on my XServe G5 the drives MUST be SATA I (limited to 1,5GB/s) and not SATA II which is the up to date (12/2009) usual 3 GB/s !
Once I jumpered my 1TB WD Caviar Green drive to " Opt 1 1,5GB/s " (putting a jumper between 5 and 6) it showed up nicely and I was able to format and install etc.
Of course that isn't a server grade drive so I'm aware that it may fail sooner, but it's a small setup with low load and it will only be running for a limited time anyway.

Does this mean that Vista is still installed or is HDD visible while Vista installation setup?
Some notebooks HDD controller needs SATA driver in order to be able to install system.
Sat A200 is a little bit older but I dont think the SATA driver is needed here to install Win 8.
I guess you didnt any SATA drivers to install the Vista right?
Set the BIOS to default and try to boot again using Win 8.

i'tried several usb flash drives even brand new ones, they are visible onder hardware info but they are not on the desktop nor in the finder.
what is wrong and doe anyone has a solution ?

It does not show up in disk utility, its only visible through systeminformation.
When you plug in the USB flash drive and then refresh systeminformation it becomes visible.
To remove it I shut down the computer because I cannot eject the USB device anywhere.
After starting up again when I have removed the flash drive it has gone from the systeminfo USB list.
By the way my USB mouse and keyboard are working fine, I also changed ports of these and they still keep on working so I don't think the USB ports are defect.
I guess it some kind software problem, and because I'm new to Apple I do not know much about it how to solve this.

I'm attempting to transfer files, address book, etc from an external hard drive to my new Mac-mini using migration assistant. The external drive is showing up on my desktop but Migration Assistant is not seeing the drive when searching for devices

I've been chasing this problem all afternoon. I had to reformat my internal drive on my MBP and reinstall Mountain Lion Start up assistant wouldn't see my extrnal drive with the Time Machine files on it. After many tries, I skipped the restore there and let the system boot. I could see my external drive from Finder and the files looked OK. I was told to use Migration Assistant and it had the same problem.
I saw a hint on one of these posts that the icon that you see and is label Macintosh HD is actually your backup disk and it is telling you that it has a copy of your internal Macintosh HD. I went ahead and told it to continue and it started to restore my apps, settings, and documents. It's been going for a couple of hours, and is close to being done. I expect to see my old system restored when it is finished.
Wish that Apple would put some type of note that it is seeing the backup. That is most confusing and seems to be a problem for lots of users.

PowerBook G4 does not see optical drive in System Profiler

I have a very strange situation in a powerbook G4 (1.67ghz, hi-res 15" screen).
I bought the laptop non-working, installed a new power board (plug on old one was fried!) Installed a 250gb HD which I had installed OSX on in another G4 laptop, and it booted up fine, or so I thought.
When I put in my Leopard install DVD to install over the existing 10.4 Tiger, the disc spun up, but would not mount - would not eject - and when I checked the System Profiler the superdrive was not recognized by the powerbook as being present on the ATA bus. The hard drive, of course, was seen on the ATA bus.
I thought the superdrive was bum, so I installed a known-working combo drive I had around from a previously parted laptop (Apple branded) and experienced EXACTLY the same situation.
Other things I have tried included using jumpers to manually set the hard drive to slave and cable select (from the factory, with no jumpers, it is set to master), thinking that perhaps the optical drive was somehow seen as master or cable select. All possible jumper settings I tried made no difference.
Booting from external firewire hard drive shows exactly the same situation on the ATA bus, EXCEPT (and this is where it gets just weird enough to pique my curiosity and keep me trying to fix it) - When I boot from the external drive WITHOUT AN INTERNAL DRIVE installed, the SUPERDRIVE SHOWS UP ON THE ATA BUS of the System Profiler! I have not yet seen both at the same time, but I can get one or the other to show, depending on, apparently, the presence of the internal hard drive.
Am I missing something here, or am I to assume a fault in the IDE controller of the logic board?
I have never seen this laptop working properly, but the seller I acquired it from stated that the optical drive worked fine until he fried the DC in-board, presumably with a faulty power supply. He had removed his hard drive to save the data on it.

Well, I am happy to report that the situation is resolved with my powerbook not seeing the superdrive, but I still do not really understand exactly why it was unavailable in the system profiler as I originally posted.
My particular solution was to wipe out (erase) the hard drive, zapped PMU, zapped PRAM, did the reset-nvram in open firmware, rechecked to make CERTAIN the proper cables were installed properly, and Now I just completed a fresh install of Leopard from the previously recalcitrant superdrive, to the now-clean hard drive.
My BEST GUESS as to what was wrong with the situation from the outset may have had something to do with where the hard drive came from and how that operating system was installed. (the OS was on the HD when I installed it) In hindsight, perhaps doing all the resets, as well as repairing permissions MIGHT have done it, but I got caught up in thinking it might be cables or something.
So, I would advise others with a similar problem to:
repair the hard drive
repair permissions on the hard drive
reset PMU
reset PRAM
boot to open firmware (hold command-option-o-f at boot) and type "reset-nvram" (without quotes) enter, the type "set-default" enter, then type "reset-all" enter
cross your fingers, knock on wood, and boot! See what happens....
if no glory, THEN look at cables (make certain they are the CORRECT cables and that they are seated properly) I bought a hard drive cable and an optical cable from ebay sellers with assurance that they were the proper cables, and NEITHER had the same part number as the original cable which I suspected faulty, and that in the end are actually GOOD! GO BY PART NUMBERS! do not accept someone elses assurance that their cable is the proper one!
then suspect faulty optical drive - if possible swap another drive in and check.
if a second optical fails, then SUSPECT logicboard, but before you invest in a new logic board ($$$$$) try putting a freshly erased HD in and just see if that helps.

I am very relieved that the fault did not lie in any of the major components (or even the minor ones for that matter)
It turned out to be only software/installation/settings, even though the symptoms certainly seemed to point to a hardware issue. It pays to try the resets and repairs!

V480 not seeing internal drives - no LED's on the drives either

Hello,
I purchased a used V480 from eBay which came w/o drives. I had to buy separate drives from another vendor. The system appears to be fine - i.e. I am on the console, all tests pass, probe-scsi-all "sees" /pci@9,600000/SUNW,qlc@2 (but not the drives), and I can start an install of Solaris 10 booting from the CD.
So at first I thought it was the drives were bad, but the three LED's next to each drive do not light up ever - not during POST or anything. Doesnt matter if the drives are in or not.
My question(s) are - shouldnt those LED's light up/flash at least once during POST regardless of if the drives are in or out? Also, I dont have the key to the machine (anyone have a spare they want to sell me? <grin>) so I cannot put it in diagnostic mode. Does anyone think that matters i.e. if I could put the box in diag mode, install the drives and boot would that maybe help to "see" them?
The machine shipped w/o drives to me so my final question is - is there some sort of configuration or jumper internally that could "block" the drives being seen i.e. the original owner used only external FC-AL drives and so they did something to make it so that internal drives could not be used lets say for security purposes or something? Not sure where else to troubleshoot but I dont want to try and return the machine - too expensive to ship it back.

Nevermind. Figured it out. The drives were not stock V480 drives. They were Hitachi drives pulled from a StorEdge 9900. I had to "jumper" them to get them to spin up. Once I did that, they were seen by probe-scsi-all and now I can format them and use them.

[SOLVED] New install does not see SSD drive

Ok, I have a DFI motherboard which at first did not recognize my new Intel SSD drive I have installed. After updating the BIOS, it now correctly recognizes it. However when I run the 2009.2 cd and try to prepare the drives, it does not show any drives listed?
/sbin/fdisk -l
does not show any drives either so it looks like arch cant see any installed HD's which makes since, but the motherboard does show the new Intel SSD as a Sata drive right under my DVD player?
Any help?
Edit: I hooked up my old Seagate drive and it shows up fine. Any idea on why this SSD is not playing nice?
Solved: I have come to the conclusion this has nothing to do with the Arch install, but is simply a hardware issue with my motherboard. I installed the SSD drive in my wifes pc, it seen the ssd as a sata drive while booting, it seen it when arch was initializing, it seen it when I did a fdisk, and when i finally tried to install, it was there too!!
So there must be some issue with my old DFI MB. I will work on that or upgrade..Thanks to everyone who helped out...

Yes, the cable should be able to be reversed as the ssd drives are identical compared to normal sata drives in respect to the cable connections: one sata data connection and one power. I will try some different cables and see if that helps. I did try a new port on the mb which did not work, and when i used the current cables on my older seagate drive it worked fine

G4 disk utility does not see hard drive

I am helping someone with a G4 Quicksilver. She is running 10.4 but only has disks for 10.1 and 10.2. When I boot with the 10.2 CD, disk utility does not see the hard drive. I was thinking of connecting her computer to my MacBookPro (Intel, 10.5) via target disk mode and then running Disk Utility. Is that crazy? She is suffering from slow startup and grey screen. I've disconnected the periferals, safe booted, reset PRAM. She really needs Disk Utility.

with the 10.2 CD, disk utility does not see the hard drive.
Disk Utility from 10.2 should see the hard drive (the drive name should appear in the left box). If it does not, the drive is malfunctioning or has a loose cable.
If you attempt to Verify, it will complain that there are illegal values in reserved fields in several different record types. Using this older Disk Utility to repair a 10.4 disk may cause more problems than it solves.
As Tom \[Texas Mac Man] says, you should only repair 10.4 and later disks with 10.4 and later Disk Utility:
HT2648- Only use Mac OS X 10.4-compatible disk utilities with Mac OS X 10.4 volumes
• If you boot the regular Hard Drive (no CD/DVD required) while holding down the Shift key, it will do a quick check of the Hard Drive, then boot up in "Safe Mode". This will fix any simple Disk problems.
• 10.4.3 and later can do a Disk Utility Verify of the Boot drive, "live" (but cannot Repair "live").

Intermittently does not see hard drive

I have an ambient light sensor iMac G5 that developed an intermittent problem, at least initially. It would not boot, but I could reset the PRAM and boot from an install disk. It did not "see" the HD, so I figured the HD was going bad (been here before) took it out and was able to back it up and save everything. Replaced the HD and thought everything was fine. Nope. Same problem, it will start to a blue-grey screen, and in a few minutes the fans come on full blast. Sometimes it sees the hard drive (disk utility) but will not mount it, sometimes it won't see it.
Caps 1009 and 1010 are bulging. Very subtle, but real. Power supply looks OK no bulging caps.
It's a good machine and still useful. Replacing the capacitors is a fair amount of work.
Any easier fixes?

Hi John and welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Unfortunately, the answer is no, there is not an easy fix. Since you obviously know what to look for, the bulging capacitors indicate a major problem. Two solutions are a tech that knows how to replace the caps, or a new logic board. That is, unless you are very comfortable desoldering and replacing components like capacitors. If you are, cost is rather low. If not, a new logic board is probably cheaper.
I would go for the logic board if it was me. Or maybe one of the new iMacs and copy your HD over.
Get back with what you want to do...we are all fellow users on here and like to know what others end up doing.

T42 does not see hard drive

I have two T42, neither can see the hard drive. I have confirmed the drives are good by swapping them out to a T41 laptop and it boots fine. Bios or boot options do not see the hard drive. Is this damaged beyond repair?

If you are not having problems with the HDD in other ThinkPads then the problem is with the HDD controller on the systemboard itself. You could try to update your BIOS if you want, but this is a mechanical issue.
Replacing the systemboard is the correct solution here.

Installer does not see hard drive, how do I mount

Initialized Hard Drive with current volume and as mac extended and zero'd out memory. This drive came out of a PC that had been out of whack and drive was partitioned wrong in the PC. It worked fine to load mac OS 9.2.2 and has 18 gigs free. When I boot off of the Tiger disc it does not see the hard drive at all. Neither does the disc utility function. I checked the firm ware and it is up to date. Ran disk warrior and it says all is ok. Is it something simple?

Try this instead:
1a (If this is the startup drive.) Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu if using Tiger.) Be sure to use the installer disk for the version of OS X you intend to install.
1b (If this is a non-startup volume or external drive.) Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
If this is the second drive in your computer, be sure you have jumpered the drive as SLAVE (assuming the original hard drive is jumpered as MASTER.)

Does not see optical drive

My IMac does not see the optical drive, however, it is visibable in windows 7. I'm running Parallels

Exactly. It can only be connected to one at a time. You have to eject it from Parallels for it to be used by the Mac.
I initially thought you were using Boot Camp.

Can not see hard drive on desktop after reinstalling Mountain Lion

I have erased my hard drive and reinstalled Mountain Lion 10.8.4 and now I can not see the MacIntosh HD on the desk top. Downloaded the most recent updates and restarted but still do not see the hard drive on the desk top. Any ideas?

Open Finder preferences and on the general tab check Hard disks for Show these items on the desktop.

Bridge CS4 Does Not See External Drive

Very suddenly, Bridge is not seeing the external USB connected driver I use to store recent photos. I read a similar message here and the writer was told to add the drive to favorites. That appeared to work for him, but I could not do that since the folder doesn't appear under Computer in the favorites section either. The drive appears in Windows Explorer. I am using Vista 32. Any suggestions?

Did you power up or connect the external drive after Bridge had been started? I've observed that Bridge only includes drives that were attached and active when Bridge was launched; it does not add a drive to its folders list if that drive is started after Bridge is active. With your external drive on (and appearing in explorer) try exiting and relauching Bridge.
