Xserve POST troubles

I have an xserve 3Ghz Intel 2007.
At power on the system startup up and then freezes and fans race. After pulling off the cover I noticed some of the POST LEDs, located on the rear of the main logic board, are RED. DS1 and DS4 light are RED and DS2, DS3 are Green. Any tell me what's up?

There are red LEDs on the motherboard that are lit when the server is running normally, so don't necessarily let that concern you. Off hand I can't remember what they relate to, but red doesn't necessarily indicate a problem.
In my experience, most POST problems track back to DIMMs, so I'd try removing a pair of DIMMs at a time to see if you can get past POST.
If that doesn't work, use the XServe Hardware Diagnostics disk that came with the server to run a hardware diagnostic on the server.

  • Xserve setup trouble

I'm trying to set up an Xserve at a high school in my town. Someone from a local college came to help, but he had never set up an Xserve before and we got stuck. We have already gone through the set up process (creating the account, attaching it to the internet and downloading the updates). Now we need to create accounts for all the students. I'm not exactly sure how to do this. The guy from the college tried doing it via the user options in system preferences, but it didn't work and didn't seem right. We then opened up the workgroup manager (thinking that it would allow us to do it). We weren't able to edit anything - then I noticed the lock symbol in the corner. However when we tried to unlock it, the admin password didn't work. What password should we be using? Are we even using the right application to set up networked accounts? I tried looking at the documentation, but it just confused me. We were left at a bad place - I'm not sure what part of the documentation we are at. Any advice?
    Thanks!

I set up a Xserve, with workgroup access, last year. When I went to create user accounts, I discovered that I had to set the Open Directory usage to Open Directory Master, even though Apple's documentation made it sound as if this was unnecessary. Once you have your Xserve set to be an Open Directory Master, you will need to configure WorkGroup Manager in order to set up access for your users.
There are at least three essential Mac OS X Server Guides that you will want to have handy. They are
    File Services Admin Guide
    Open Directory Admin
    User Management
I would actually recommend downloading all the server guides you can find on http://www.apple.com/server/documentation/. Try doing a search for any you don't find on that page. I also used the Getting Started booklet that came with the Xserve to help me activate Open Directory, but be aware that it only gives very basic help.
I had to read through several of the guides in order to figure out what to do. I would walk you through the steps, but it would take wa-a-a-y too long and you may not want the same setup I am using.
A couple of tips that are not obvious from the documentation:
    1. You server must be connected to the network in order to set it up as an Open Directory Master.
    2. WorkGroup Manager opens with the default Admin directory. You will need to switch directories in order to set up a workgroup for user access. To switch directories, click on the small globe icon just below the tool bar. You should be given some choices in a drop-down menu. You probably want the local directory, which should be /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1.
Once you are in the correct directory, you should be able to unlock it using your administrator password.
Xserves ship with a default admin password, but if you have changed that, the change should apply to WorkGroup Manager as well. That having been said, I had my Xserve hiccup and lose my admin password. When I reset it, I could not get WorkGroup Manager to recognize any password at all. I ended up having to completely reinstall OS X Server and then had to set the whole thing back up again. Fortunately, I had documented my setup as I went along - something I strongly recommend you do
I hope this helps. The real key is to read, read, read. Good luck.

  • Where can the install.app file be found when installing Adobe Creative Suite CS5, download version ?

I have the same problem that the user who wrote the post "Trouble installing content files on Mac", but his post went unanswered. Here is the link: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4221280. I am trying to install the adobe creative suite CS5 downloaded from the internet, and what I have is a dmg file. When I open it, there is only a read me and a folder named "English". In the read me I go to the install instructions, and they tell me to double-click in Install.app, a file which doesn't exist. What am I doing wrong?

I downloaded it from Adobe Store. When I open the dmg file I see the read me.pdf and the English folder, nothing more. Perhaps the problem is that I have already installed the program in one computer, this is happening to me trying to install it in another one. Could that be it, that I need another license in order to make it work?

  • How do I know which MacBook is right for me?

    Hi,
I'm new to Mac thinking and I'm unsure what to buy, HELP,Please.
The time I spent on my computer is mostly internet. I'm not sure if I want a DVD burner or just the basic mac. Maybe you know some questions you can ask me to help.
    Thanks,

MacBooks are complex mechanical and electronic devices. Although Apple tries to have high standards, a few "bad apples" are going to squeak through. Apple hasn't released specific numbers, but it's entirely possible they've shipped nearly 2,000,000 MacBooks in the last year. I would not call four people posting here a problem with MacBooks falling apart.
Remember that the Apple Discussions is specifically for people who are having problems. You're not going to see any posts here from the 1,999,996 other MacBook owners who didn't have a problem. So don't think that the troubles you read here are indications that everyone with a MacBook is having a problem.
It's also likely that Apple is selling quite a few more white MacBooks than black MacBooks. So, even if twice as many people with white MacBooks are posting trouble here, that doesn't mean the same problem is less likely with a black MacBook. It means there's just fewer of them to begin with.
Stating that there is a problem with white MacBooks falling apart is misinformation.

  • IEEE 1934 devices report as being Offline in Capture Mode

I recently found the need to capture video. I had an OHCI compliant IEEE 1934 card professionally installed. Windows recognizes the card and reports it as working properly. When I connect a Firewire device, windows recognizes a device had been attached and detached when I disconnect which indicates the cables and connections are fine.
I have three Firewire devices, two of which are on the Device Setup list located in the Capture Preferences of Premiere 2.0. They include:
    JVC HR-DVS2U
    Panasonic AG DVX-100
My third device is a Cannon ZR45 MC and while I understand only the ZR40 and ZR50 are listed, I figure the functionality would be so similar, that the ZR45 would have at best limited support within Premiere.
All devices report as being Offline. I’ve read the manual and went through each step more than 4 times with each device and the conclusion is the same. Might there be a step within Windows that I need to perform first?
    Dual Pentium Xeon 2.4Ghz
Windows XP Pro, Service Pack 2
    3 GB RAM
    Premiere 2.x

I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to help answer and troubleshoot my problem.
When researching the web for answers, to include Microsoft’s web site, I discovered many people had the same issues, but for different reasons. Most seemed to stem from service pack or updates received in Vista. Some derived after upgrading from XP Home to XP Pro. I kind of thought this was my issue since all my IEEE devices work with XP home on a very old Sony laptop, but not XP Pro on a rather capable workstation. In the literally hundreds of pages, posts and articles I read through, none of them helped me and according to most who have posted trouble with devices unseen by Windows or offline by any number of different editing aps, there were no fixes. My solution came quite by accident.
I don’t know if this is typical for all OHCI compliant cards not installed by a computer manufacturer, but the one I have comes with a utility called The Switch. It enables one to use either it’s built in drivers that are used by default, or Windows drivers. When I used The Switch, the Installation Wizard auto detected the Canon, and began installing about 7 drivers at the end of which, Premiere saw and manipulated the cam. I tried the same thing for the JVC. All but one driver (T.V. Tuner) was installed, however Premiere still recognized and controlled the deck. Due to time restraints, I only tried playback, shuttle, pause and stop, but there should be no reason capture won’t work.
I hope this helps others who are experiencing device offline issues. I urge you to post your solutions even if they are different from mine.

  • Is there a GPS mountain bike tracker or trek application available

Hi, I'm a newbie to this dissussion group.Althought I 've been an APPLE supporter for years, hense why I haven't had to post troubles!
In the never future I'm concidering a iPhone. Think of the mulity tasking skills of the phone. Is there an application available simuliar to a Garmin Edge 305 or 705.
Some one mentioned the Myride application, haven't looked at it yet.
    thank you:)

I'm not exactly sure what the Garmin system that you were mentioning does, but there is a program called "Trailguru" that will track pretty much everything you'd ever want. It keeps track of the total time of travel, the distance you've travelled, your speed, your elevation, the total time that you're moving, the total time that you're stopped, your maximum speed, average speed, latitude and longitude. After you've finished tracking your bike ride, it will show you on google maps exactly where you've gone. And best of all, it's free.

  • Need an older xorg

Can anyone direct me to a package for xorg 6.7?  I find that with 6.8 I get frequent freezes that can only be fixed with a reboot - especially on KDE.
6.7 didn't seem to have this problem...

I think he would say that ATI accellerated drivers only run either on Xfree 4.3 or on xorg 6.7.1...
phunni: I've had the same problem here, actually i'm using xorg 6.7.1, you can download it from:
          ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/incoming
but i you want to use it you have to keep the old gtk2 and libglade, otherwise (almost) all your gtk2 apps will not works anymore.

  • Trouble capturing to xserve raid

    Hey,
I'm having serious issues capturing from my Dual 2 Ghz G5 with 3.25gb RAM (running os 10.3.9) to my apple xserve raid.
My raid is striped as raid0 and is connected by fibre channel to another G5 running os 10.4 server software. Capturing from this G5 works perfectly, but when I try and capture from my other G5, which is connected to the G5 with server software via a gigabit ethernet cable, I encounter numerous dropped frames.
I have tried everything I can think of to get this working, but to no avail.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Am I wrong in thinking that I can capture DV to an xserve raid across a gigabit ethernet? If so, what would I need to do to solve the problem?
Sorry if I've been abit vague or if I've not supplied as much info as needed. Please let me know if there is anything else I need to add!!
Thanks in advance for any help given.
    Cheers
    Adam

Thanks for your post - I know its been a while responding, but it seems to be one thing after an other at the moment!
Right, for a time, your suggestion worked! We started capturing to our local drives, then transferring the media across. Render files and project files were also saved on the raid. Generally our workflow was very good - but not perfect!
Then I realised that one of the macs that is connected to the network isn't gigabit, which, from my understanding, means that all the other macs would be limited to 110mbs instead of 100 - Do you know if I am correct with this assumption?
Anyway, it hasn't caused us major issues and because of how busy we've been we haven't really had a chance to test the theory and/or reslove it.
Anyway, my boss then kindly went out and bought me a G5 Quad, which was also added to the network and then we upgraded to FCP5 on every computer - now we are having no end of trouble working across the network. When we capture locally, move it across and then play it back the footage is constantly freezing, especially on the Quad!
People keep telling me that you can't use dv across a gigabit network, but surely this can't be the case.
There must be something I'm doing wrong? if it the 10mbs issue I mentioned, or do I simply need to go spend alot of money upgrading every mac to fibre channel? Even if I did this, would it definately solve all our problems?
    Pleae, please, please help!!!

  • Posting / Due / Document date trouble

    Hi there,
i have a little bit trouble with the dates. I already read a sheet about dates in SAP, but there are some misunderstandings. Here is the scenario, in which i have problems :
    I book a incoming payment ( Posting date : 15.11.2008 | due date : 02.11.2008 | document date : 15.11.2008)
You find the payment in the general ledger with the correct dates. Now i find out, that i made some mistakes and i have to cancel the incoming payment. I cancel the incoming payment and i find a wrong due date in the in the general ledger (not 02.11.2008 -> 15.11.2008). Cause of booking date and cancel date is the same time, the systems do not ask for the date.
I do not understand the correct meaning of posting, due and document for incoming and outgoing payments.
I book the incoming payments by means of the bank statements. In my opinion the posting date is the time i book the incoming payment, the valuta date is the due date and the document date is the bank statement date. But i think i am wrong with my opinion, cause of my experience with the cancellation.
Pleas give me an advise, the general ledger is going wrong.
    Thanks and regards

    Hi Gordon,
    hi community,
as your mentioned i was trying your last comment :
Depending on the date you receive the payment, you could use this date for all Posting / Due / Document date. Just keep the consistency for your date. Which ever you like, do not confuse yourself.
I changed the posting / document date of incoming payments to the date of receiving the payment. E.g.
Invoice date is 22.12.2008, Incoming Payment 13.01.2009, and today i got the bank statement and book it into SAP.
If i do so posting date = incoming payment date, the system warns "There is a document of this type with a later posting date". I was already searching the forum about this message and i am not sure if it is ok to ignore this message.
    Thanks Steffen

  • HUGE Troubles with xServe RAID formatted 10.4 and using it with SLS 10.6

    Hi All,
We met today a huge trouble using an Apple xServe RAID (formatted HFS+ with a Mac OS 10.4 Server PowerPC G5).
This RAID has been plugged with a new xServe Intel Xeon (Model xServe 3.1), MacOS X 10.6.2, Apple FiberChannel card 4 GB, the link is at 2 GB.
There is also an Infortrend RAID FiberChannel 4 GB Fiber to SATA RAID attached to this new Intel Xeon server : this RAID drive mounts correctly, no troubles.
BUT the "old" xServe RAID is not able to mount at all while plugged with this new Intel Xeon, DiskUtility claims the volume needs repair !!! We try a repair = failed !!!
The xServe RAID has been formated under 10.4.6, HFS+ Journaled.
The Infortrend has been formated under 10.6.2, HFS+
Does anyone met a such case ??? We tried using SFP to SFP Copper cable or Optical Fiber + SFP/LC Transceiver = same results
Many thanks a lot for your opinion !!!
    Regards.

What if you connect your "old" xServe RAID to a non SLS server if you have one available? Preferably one running 10.4.x server to match your HFS format. If the data on the old RAID is so critical that you can't afford to lose it, you could always pickup a used PPC w/ a fibre channel card and install 10.4 server on it just so you can transfer the data. Curious to see what you end up doing.

  • Installing Xserve on a 2 post rack

I need an advise on how to mount the xserve on a 2 post rack.
    Please help

I've had two xserves on a shelf in a telco rack and it supported it just fine, though I admit it's not ideal. As far as the xserves being too deep, I guess it just depends on the position of the rack in the room. The G4 and G5 xserves did come with mounting kits for a two post rack which is how most of my xserves are mounted.
We use a two post adapter from racksolutions.com that work out great for our few Dell servers the rest of our xserves that I installed with the four post kit and cable management kit since I will need to access them more often.
It's unfortunate that the Apple RAID and the new intel Xserves don't adapt to the two post adapter because Apple's mounting kit's rail extensions are too long and run into the telco rack in the middle.
The previous xserves extension attached to the rear of the xserve and were much shorter. They work great with the two post adapter. I do understand it's a different type of rail kit but I'd like Apple to consider those of us that have to use a two post rack. I hope there is a different kind of adapter that is compatible with the new xserve mounting kit.
