Xserve Processor One maxed out

I have an Xserve running 10.4.10, 2GB ram, three 500GB drives, two mirrored, 600 users, attached to Open Directory Master. It is a near clone of a 3 other Xserves based on grade level.
Every single morning we have to hard restart. The upper lights for processor one are pegged to the max, no logins, mouse moves but no action. This will sometimes happen after a few users log on, say an hour or two after school starts. There is no info at all in Console.
Seems unrelated to a CCC job which I turned off. I am also running Retrospect 6.1, but not until the weekend. I SUSPECT it's the processor itself, but I was wondering what other steps I might try beforehand. I have two mirrored drive and the third drive as a backup. I was going to first remove processor one and put proc. two in it's place... then I was going to clone to the third single drive if that didn't work.
I guess my question is.... is there anything I might be missing before I take the above actions?
Thanks,
LK

Retrospect gets my vote. It really is an unstable piece of software for a server environment. You'll find numerous people have had issue with it.
The fact that it's not actually performing a backup at the time doesn't seem relevant.
I'd also err away from thinking it's a physical processor problem. When a single processor gets overloaded, it's usually a software problem (multiple CPUs only come into play when using multiple applications and/or applications that are multi-threaded to take advantage of multiple processors). If a single processor gets pegged it's often because a software program is spinning its wheels.
It should be relatively easy to tell if that's the case. Activity Monitor (or, preferably, top run at the time the CPU is maxed will give you a pointer as to what process is consuming the CPU cycles.
Server Monitor will give you a better picture of the hardware, including error states on any components, including the CPU.
My bet is on the software, though.

  • Processor maxed out when starting RT application in development mode.

When I go to run my RT application on my 8145RT board in development mode, one of my dual-core processors stays maxed out for 2 or 3 minutes.  I added a break-point at the very begining of the code to make sure it was not something related to the execution of my code.  This only happens if I make a change to the code and have to re-download it.
    I am using LabVIEW 2009.
    Any ideas?

I know this behaviour and I think (but I'm not sure) its a bug which is allready reported. Right now I'm out of office and cannot access the DB to check the CARs number, but as soon as I'm back I will check and update you here.

  • ITunes Maxes out processor

After downloading an iTunes plus song, my PC maxes out the processor while processing the file. The processing never completes and I have to reboot the computer. Is this a problem with certain PC's and this file type? My PC is about 5 years old.

Problem solved, apex pages using Automatic Row Processing and File Upload were causing the problem.  The developer manually wrote the pl/sql instead of the using Automatic Row Processing and problem solved.

  • Maxed out Mac Pro (nearly new) DEAD SLOW - why???

*I have always been a PC guy (animation and film production is what I do -- www.speedbumpstudios.com) but I decided to bite the bullet and go Mac. I maxed out my Mac Pro-- if it's available, I got it. It's a 15,000 machine. Great. So I've had it for a few months and the thing is so dead slow I am finding it almost unusable. My three year old PC laptop kicks its butt. Here are the symptoms.*
*Opening Photoshop takes anywhere from 1 to 3 minutes. Once it is open, if I try to open a file, it takes another couple of minutes for the finder to pop up so I can search for it.*
*iTunes regularly hangs and/or takes several minutes to load. My iPod, which is also new, sometimes cannot even connect to it (error).*
*HP scanning software takes minutes to open. Once the scan is ready to be saved, it takes minutes for finder to even offer the option to name the new file.*
*Almost all the software on this thing starts up painfully slow.*
*IMPORTANT: I have noticed that the machine runs almost all right immediately after a restart. The longer it runs, the worse these symptoms get.*
*ALSO IMPORTANT: -- I had been running Boot Camp on the machine, allowing me to boot into Windows XP. Recently bought Parallels and ran that. While this Mac never ran great, the problems seemed to get markedly worse at that point. I have since, out of desperation, removed Parellels completely, but the problems persist.*
*I am, of course, sick about how much I am paying for this machine that is supposed to be the best available and it about as useful as a boat anchor. WHAT SHOULD I DO!?*

    George, I feel your pain. I too have a maxed out Mac Pro;
    Mac Pro - 8 Core (Dual Quad-Core 3GHz)
    16GB RAM (Crucial Memory)
    4x 750GB Drives
    ATI 1900x Vid Card
    2x 30" Cinema Displays
etc etc etc .... I even have a 2-port eSATA cables installed (OWC) with a 1.5TB external drive (Iomega, and fast as the dickens!)
My machine has been in the Apple repair facilities THREE times so far (I am working with an executive relations person for 3 months now) and we are about to swap it out for a new machine because the term "ghosts in the machine" apply to many Mac Pros. In fact, the last time Apple fixed this machine was yesterday, replacing a bluetooth module, and as soon as I booted the machine it started having kernel panics (for the first time), we thought it was the RAM Riser cards being seated wrong... after making sure everything was seated properly, and doing a complete OS reinstall, it is still kernel panic-ing every hour (if I let the machine sit quietly)...so, there is a ghost in this machine that does not want to go away.
To get your situation though, MY machine has ALWAYS been much slower than the dual-G5 I replaced last April. You are not alone here. This is an 8-Core machine, ran Tiger slow and is now running Leopard only about 20% faster, which is still slower than the G5. Makes me want to cry sometimes because I paid, what, $1300 for the processor upgrade alone?
Something is wrong with your machine. I suppose you have already tried to reinstall, reformat your drives, correct permissions, etc and still found your machine wanting in the ways of speed, right? What you need to do is to contact Apple Executive Relations and tell them what is going on. Once they see that you ordered such an expensive machine (no one buys extra RAM from Apple so they will sympathize right there!) they WILL contact you and work with you until your problem is solved. The only reason they have not replaced MY machine yet (they will usually do so after the 2nd or 3rd repair attempt) is because in my case I cannot afford the downtime. Now, however, I think we have to because no one can figure out why this machine is having panics after sitting still for an hour.
Anyway, be assured this is NOT representative of Apple or the Mac Pro speed. Mac Pro's are plenty fast, and unbelievably fast with newer, Intel-based software (CS3), and even though Leopard has many many bugs it is faster than Tiger. My partner has the same machine as I do and it is so fast I think it does most of his work before he even arrives in the morning.
Work with Apple, let them fix your machine or replace it. They will.

  • WHAT TO BUY TO MAX OUT THIS PISMO BRONZE KEYBOARD POWERBOOK

Hi, pls advise what to buy to max out this powerbook and where best to buy upgrades from.
    POWERBOOK (FIREWIRE) 3,1
    CPU TYPE PowerPC 750 (83.2)
    CPU SPEED 400MHz
37GB HARD DRIVE AT THE MOMENT
I want to install an airport card, or would you advise me to get ausb key to access wifi?
also, is it worth trying to upgrade the graphics card current one being an ATY, RAGE M3
CAN I UPGRADE THE CD ROM DRIVE THAT CAN BE REMOVED BY PULLING A LEVER AT THE FRONT?
what about a back up power cord which one would you all recommend?
My plan was to try to put in a 100gb hard drive 7200rpm
an airport card and max the ram to 1gb.
I am a novice in opening up this powerbook, when you remove the cover you see 1 memory module, where is the second located?
Any other tips to increase the speed/power of this powerbook.
I just want to keep it as a spare working machine for business.
    Many thanks All
    Amin

The USB airport dongles aren't that great, require specialized drivers, which may or may not work, and that model supports the original airport card which looks like:
and can not be purchased at the Apple Store. Several places that sell used and refurbished Macs in England may be able to get you that card. I'd do a search on Google for such places. It supports 802.11b, but not 802.11g or 802.11n speeds, though most WiFi Access points offers 802.11b support.
You can upgrade GPU support via Villagetronic's:
    http://www.villagetronic.com/eprvtbook.html
This only offers a better GPU for external displays. The internal will still be the original. You can't upgrade the original GPU directly.
    http://www.macsales.com/
    http://www.mcetech.com/
    and
    http://www.macresq.com/
all offer CD-RW and DVD-RW drives for that model. Note though, iDVD, if it does run will run extremely slowly if at all. The oldest Mac that supports iDVD with any reasonable speed is the G4/733 processor PowerMac desktop. And that at 1 hour of video encoded in 2 hours.
The internal hard drive can only be upgrade to 120 GB per partition, and only Parallel ATA, and not SATA. Therefore any internal drive you might be looking for would have to conform to those specs, and I'd only purchase internal drives by Seagate and Western Digital. Note that for higher capacities, 5400 RPM drives are as fast as the 7200 RPM drives that are lower capacities because of the denser track density.
The official RAM limit on the article here:
    http://support.apple.com/specs/powerbook/PowerBook_FireWire.html
Should be observed. I would not exceed 512 MB, even though some RAM vendors may say it is possible to do so. Mac OS X is particularly sensitive to the specs of the computer being observed. If you exceed such specs, kernel panics, and heat issues may crop up.
P.S. Please note, avoid using all uppercase. It makes it look like you are shouting, and based on internet net etiquette may be considered rude by some. I'm sure that's not your intention, just thought I'd give you the heads up!

  • Blue Lights! Processor load maxed?

Another newbie question that I can't seem to find already dealt with. If it has been, a friendly pointer to the FAQ or solution is all I need.
My single processor G5 Xserve (1gig RAM, 2x80gig HD) is humming along just fine, except that today I noticed the blue "workload" lights maxed out. Activity Monitor shows 100% CPU Usage... very little of the usage (1-2%) is "system". The remaining 98-100% shows as "user" with 0 (ZERO)% Idle.
Checking out the running processes (all of them) shows that cron is running as a user process and is eating up the 97 or 98%....
The machine didn't do this for the first 4 days it was running. Any ideas? I've turned off (and on and off) website performance caching, and shutdown and restarted several times. No resolution.
    Help?!?
    Ideas?!?
    Thanks in Advance!
    -Case

    Got it...
Cron was picking up 3 tab files from user "tmp". It seems they were just leftovers from a failed Norton AV install. Removing them has no effect, except that I have TONS of free processor cycles now...
    Problem solved!

  • 10.5.5 - AFP maxes out CPU usage

Since installing the 10.5.5 update on our Intel Xserves, one sharing AFP Home directories will periodically begin to max out its CPU usage, this seems to happen every 2 or 3 days.
Over the space of an hour or two, CPU usage of the AppleFileServer process will increase from floating around 5% - 25% to a solid 400% (it's a Dual, Quad Xeon server so that's one whole CPU).
As an experiment, I manually disconnected all connected users (about 75 connections, 40ish that were not idle). CPU usage remained a steady 400% with 0 client connections.
Issuing a serveradmin stop afp, gives the response 'AFP Status: STOPPED' as it should, but in actually fact the process is still there. Clicking 'Stop' via ServerAdmin.app has no effect either.
The only thing that seems to work is a reboot (currently I have scheduled a 'shutdown -r now' for 1am every day).
Like I said, no problems with AFP prior to 10.5.5.
I hope there is a fix for this in 10.5.6 as it is a major problem.

Same problem here with AFP. Seems to be even worse with 10.5.6. I have two servers with home directories both doing the same thing. Only a restart seems to stop it. We also have SMB, windows users, disconnected on a random basis. Everyone may get disconnected or about 1/2 of them. This happens once or twice a week. If we use server admin to change any ACL's the SMB users also get disconnected. We are looking at switching back to Windows servers. We have had these issues since switching our home directories last summer. We have been working with a local vendor and Apple SE with no resolutions.

  • System Maxing Out!

Hey there! I followed up on some performace tips for my mac, but its not enough. I followed pretty much everything in the manual and even doing things from cliff truesdell's book, but its still not quite enough for me. My music requires lots of information processing and MIDI functions, which maxes out my processor in a heartbeat. My questions: are there any other things that I can do to help the music get processed, and I hear something about logic node...what is it?

Logic node is a utility that allows you to connect two macs together so that the Mac running logic can source processing power from the other mac.....
you need the same version of logic node on both macs and connect them via ethernet.
also if you only have one monitor, make sure the slave mac has logic node as a startup item.
after all that, it can sometimes not work too well

  • Maxed out CPU Usage, happens suddenly, no obvious cause, please help!

I've had an XServe-G5 running well for about 18 months, with anywhere from 2-5 active users at one time. The server is only running AFP, Software Update & FTP services.
For the last 2 months, without warning, the CPU usage will max out, with only a small amount of disk & lan access with it.
I've found a less than ideal solution . . . . the cpu max out seems to be linked to 1 or 2 users logged in at one time, but not always the same users, if these users disconnect then the CPU usage returns to normal. I haven't found a way to identify which user/users it is, so I disconnect them through 'Server Admin' one by one till I get a result.
This goes on up to 5 times a day. I've checked the AFP access log when the problem happens, but can't see anything there that isn't there normally, the error log has no events. When there are no users logged in, other than the local 'Admin', the problem does not occur.
We've resorted to only logging into the server when needed, but it's getting to be a major pain.
    Please help!

Many things can cause this. What do you see in "top"?
One example is when you hit the "corrupt .DS_Store" bug in AFP. See afp548.com for a discussion, e.g.:

  • Maxing out on RAM

    Hey
My old powerbook came with 128, I added 512 to start then exchanged that with a 1gig so it was running on 1.128. No problem at all. Spec said max was 640.
I now have the macbook pro 2.16 C2D 15.4 screen. It came with a removable gig ram and I had a gig from my previous MBP. However - I feel 2gig is not enough. This MBP says it can only do 3gig ram. Recent models can do 4. I'm wondering if anyone has maxed out the ram on a 3gig version and run it on 4.
I'm thinking of pullng out both 1gigs and sticking 2x2gig in it. Just want to make sure it is possible.
    Appreciate any help.

    Hi,
one benefit of 2x2GB is that you still have the 'pairing' advantage of some small percentage more speed when the memory is accessed.
And secondly, if you decide to get a Santa Rosa MBP in the future you can use this memory for it.
Other than that, you are right, not much use.
    Have Fun

  • How do I get my iTunes (both purchased and cd's) into the cloud as I cannot use match my iMac and MacBook are too old to use the right OS and maxed out RAM memory upgrades, but have iPhone 4S and now 64gb iPad and libraries on desktops plus iPod!!

So very excited bought iPad and new speakers today! Want to get all my music sorted as across iMac (G5), MacBook os 10.6 (maxed out ram and memory) and old iPod. Saw Match would be an option but can't use due to old OS so I can get the raw music library files but then what do I do to get all in one place? Any help appreciated.

A good route would be to attach a USB drive to the macbook.  You can use the drive to assemble a copy of all of your music from your various devices.  iTunes on the macbook can be used to create a new library, located on the USB drive, into which you can import all of your music.
    Two major benefits:
    1.  From here you can run iTunes Match across your entire music collection; and
    2.  You will have created a full local backup of all of your music on the USB drive.
Once complete you will be able to access the music from any iDevice capable of running iTunes Match,  Do remember as you add music it is important to maintain a local backup in order to keep your music safe.
