Xserve Raid #A1009 wont start :(
Hello everyone,
I just got in my possession an Xserve RAID Model#A1009 7.6/3.8A. Now since I got it I start to learn about this storage server, any way I connected to power then I connected to internet to access it remotely, I reformat the RAID partition on all 7 HDD which it came with and went fine no problem. On the logs I seen that "power supply 1 failed" error log, and the xserve work fine, but now after I reboot the Xserve for some reason wont start at all, all led from back of it are green and those from front of it only 2 led are green the controller status light ones. Please someone help me with this. Thank you.

When 750 PATAs were plentiful peoples results were mixed. The simple version is if the RAID understands the SMART controller the drive would work. Mostly there were a few 750GB models "known good" so everyone went with those until they stopped making them. I have to disagree with the "any old" characterization. It's not as picky as the Xserves but certain models *do not* work. Search the old threads about people trying trying different drives with mixed results. As I said the Caviar 500GB are the only drives still being made that I know of to reported as "known working".
On the larger issue I would very much hesitate to mix and match any drives in a RAID set-up due to reliability issues between drives. Whatever drives you settle on I would get them all the same models new at the same time.
I like my Xserve RAID - the thing is a workhorse - but I'd look at the cost + the cost of 16 replacement drives and look at what you might get in a SATA housing since those drives are still current.

How to turn on and shut down Xserve RAID when G5 starts
Hello,
Finally i Put my Xsevre RAID in the Aiino ClusterMaster 12U
connected with the G5 via the two fibre channel and one ethernet to control start up and shut down.
Since I don't leave the machine always on when not on schedule, everytime I Start the G5 I have to launch RAID Admin, erase the system, add a new one, enter monitoring password (that switched back to factory default), and start the Xserve (and I have to enter management password).
Is there a Script or something like that that runs automatically when I start the G5 and when i switch it off, so I don't have to do all these steps everytime including unmouting the Xserve prior to shutting It down?

Yesterday I took delivery of an Xserve RAID A1009. It was sold for parts but appears to be functionine perfectly so I am pretty happy. However, even though it was packed pretty well with foam all around, UPS must have handled it pretty rough and it was damaged. Worst damage was to the locking tabs at the back, specifically for the 2 cooling modules which had all 4 locking tabs broken off. Being either white metal or aluminum, I can see that potentially they may have been fragile and prone to breaking in normal use.
So, my question is, does anyone know of a replacement source for these tabs. Hopefully I may never need to pull the cooling modules but on the other hand I expect that they should need cleaning and vacuuming from time to time and appear to be pretty tough to remove without the initial help afforded by these tabs.
Thanks.The only sorce any more is ebay. If you look it has a good selection of parts. You should not need to take them out very much if the enviorment is clean. They do get a small dust coating sometimes but if you can get them out with out the tabs I would not worry to much.
I have had some bad experinces with UPS too.

What's the best place to start troubleshooting my Xserve RAID problem
Hello all,
I have an older 2.5tb (ide drives) Xserve RAID connected to an HP workstation, which is a video editing sytem. The fiber card connecting the raid is an LSI 7202XP PCI-x card.
I'm using Windows XP Pro. Nothing on the hardware or software side has been updated or changed in years.
Recently, I'll be editing video and the Xserve RAID will just "disappear". A computer restart will usually restore it.
Where's a good place to start troubleshooting? I was going to replace the fiber cables, then the fiber card...then I don't know what.
I'm just an end user/video editor, so any maintenance help is appreciated!

Tallahassee, FLNormally, it should take less than an hour @ $90 USD for labor to replace one. The HD cost is additional. Why do you think the HD needs replacing? Too small?.Then I suggest an ext FWHD, w/FW800 connector, rather than replacing the int one. If there are issues with the HD, check out the iMac HD replacement program. You should really know when you bought the machine and, IMO, it should have the AppleCare Protection Plan, which is the cheapest insurance policy for desktop machines.

Hello everyone. I'm looking to buy some type of raid system but I dot know if it shoul be an Xserve raid or another one from a place like other world computing. I need my raid to be able to do heavy video editing with video quality at blueray, and it has to act as a scratch disk. The thing I like about the Xserve raid is that it is expandable and runs through fiber. I need to be able totransfer large files fast. If I were to invest in a different raid I might be stuck with FireWire 800, or esata but I don't know if esata works on my Xserve. I know the xraid is discontinued and uses para drives, but is it still worth it.
I found one off the website gainsaver.com for about 400. Thats not including the drives. At first i wont need much space. I would start slow maybe with 2 500gb or 2 250gb something like that. Slowly ill grow, so i dont have to worry about spending a bunch on the top drives. I will be using it for time machine backup of my server, and as a scratch disk for my editing. When i do edit, i need to be able to at least transfer 50mb a second to it because i edit in blue ray quality video. I also have a fibre channel card in my xserve already so i would only have to buy the two wires. One of the things that also pushed me to consider it is that in my school, we have a video editing suite. In that suite there are a bunch of xserves and 2 xraids. They are used as scratch disks for 25 computers that all edit video at the same time. In the school we work with SD so its easier on the transfer but its still intense. Thats why i was pushed to consider the xraid, and especially coming from apple, who makes products that last years more than they should. It doesnt seem like a bad idea. What do you think

Xserve RAID will not mount to my Mac Pro
We just moved the Xserve Raid to another Mac Pro with 2x3 GHz Quad-Core and 16 GB of Ram. I installed the Xserve card, plugged the cables into the tower and into the Xserve, powered it on, installed the updated Raid Admin, but it wont mount. I checked disk utility and I dont see it there either. The lights on each drive are an amber color so I know something is not right. I wanted to find out what step am I missing, if I am missing some software, if pulling the drives out before moving it caused a problem, or any other suggestions. Any help would be greatly appreciative. Thanks!
If you're not worried about the contents of the drives that a good start because I don't think that's recoverable. What does RAID Admin say about all the other components? Are the controllers green? Technically the yellow lights on the drive are supposed to signal drive issues but I don't know why all the drives would suddenly be an issue without a deeper issue.
Fire up RAID Admin and see what's going on - you're going to need it to delete and try and recreate RAIDs anyway.

Dear all, this is frustrating. The system just wont start up, chimes and spins around but just goes up to the apple logo and that is it. I leftit in sleep mode all night by mistake and the following day refused to start. Any ideas pls? I've done all the suggestions to reset the pram/ram.
Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
a. Boot into the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
Step 2
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Step 3
Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
Step 4
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
Step 6
Reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
Step 7
Repeat Step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a Time Machine or other backup.
Step 8
This step applies only to older Macs (not current models) that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery. Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a gray screen at boot. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
Step 9
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. If you can't get to an Apple Store, go to another authorized service provider. -
Xserve RAID Admin Tool 1.5.1 not quite working
I have an Xserve RAID that's currently at firmware 1.3.2/1.26a according to Xserve RAID Admin Tool 1.5.1. However, when I try to upgrade the firmware to 1.5.1 via the RAID Admin Tool 1.5.1, it just doesn't do anything--it accepts the .xfb file and then...nothing. Quitting out of the the Admin Tool and restarting still shows the firmware at 1.3.2/1.26a. Same thing if I shut down and restart the Xserve RAID from the RAID Admin tool. Any tips? There's nothing stored on the RAID system yet (the array hasn't even been created--it's a blank system) and nothing is attached to it either (I've just plugged in the ethernet links to format it first before I start attaching an Xserve G5 to it). Also, even though the lower controller is showing green and I have an ethernet cable plugged into it, I can't get any info out of it nor can I configure it with an IP address. Only the top controller seems to allow some configuration such as IP address.
Okay, I've solved the problem.
Basically, the issue was that the lower controller wasn't seated right despite it showing a green light in RAID Admin. When I went to visually inspect it, I noticed that despite what RAID Admin 1.5.1 claimed, its light wasn't even on, let alone green. And since the lower controller handles slots 8-14 of an Xserve RAID and my slots 8-14 are totally unpopulated (empty) at the moment, it was never noticed. Now that I've reseated the lower controller, everything is visually showing green across the board and the firmware upgrade is proceeding as expected and it has upgraded the firmware from 1.3.2/1.26a to 1.5.1/1.5.1c complete with autorestart of both upper and lower controller modules.
Basic lesson learned: RAID Admin lies. If possible, visually inspect the box itself!

Switching to Xserver/Xserve RAID
Hi boys and girls...
I was looking for a little assistance in switching over to Xserve. Let me give you some background info first.
Were a small studio in London, with only 11 people in-house and the majority working externally whether free-lance, from home or from another country etc. Were mostly Mac based, though 4 machines are those little beige pc things all running XP 2002. At the minute its 1 G5 and a collection of G4 tower's and G4 power book's, G4 cube's and so on. Were all connected to a G4 server running Mac OS X Server 10.2.8 with a very small dual 120GB HD raid thing running Retrospect.
Our problem is, this system was set up some time ago and were starting to outgrow it.
What were looking for is a way to backup all of our current work and archive all of our old work. Most users like to work directly off the server as theres so much file sharing between the macs and pc's, directly updating files so there isnt any duplication etc.
First question, is it possible (and a good/bad idea ?) to have 10-15 users working directly from a Mac server, that stores the archived work for users to reference and also current work which is backed up to tape and duplicated (as we currently have) to another HD?
Secondly, Is the ideal way to be running things? Is there a more efficent way?
Finally, what kind of spec should we be looking at? There's such a huge difference between servers, while were willing to invest, we dont want to go crazy (maybe a little) on costs.

MarcusThere are certainly some drawbacks with your current setup that mean you should make some changes.
In general, there's nothing wrong with working with files directly off the server, however, 10.2.8 has some issues with multiple users accessing the same files at the same time, so you should look to move to 10.4 ASAP to address that issue, regardless of any other changes you make.
I am assuming that the remote users don't work this way - uploading/download files as appropriate - it would be painful to work off the server remotely.
The only real disadvantage with working with files directly off the server is that if a file is changed erroneously and saved, there's no easy backup.
If the file was copied to the local drive and saved, it's easy to roll back to the previous version by re-copying it from the server, but if that change is saved directly to the server the only rollback involves pulling out Retrospect.
The other change that would make a difference is installing a gigabit switch and connecting the server to it. Even if all the host systems don't have gigabit ethernet, the extra bandwidth to the server will definitely help.
As for a new server, 10-15 file sharing users are not likely to stress the server, do you don't need a top-of-the-line configuration.
You should first decide how much disk space you need. With 500GB drives, the XServe can handle up to 1.5TB on its own, without any additional XServe RAID. However, you might want to consider RAID (using RAID you're limited to 1TB of RAID 5 storage, or 500GB of mirrored storage in the box).
In addition to your current data usage, consider using an online disk backup where multiple copies of the data is stored on the server itself before (or in addition to) backing up to tape.
While tapes offer several long-term archive advantages, they really don't work so well for quick restores of a file or two. Having a snapshot of the last couple of days data online makes it trivial to step back a day or so without having to resort to tapes. This may mean, though, that your 100GB of data requires 200 or 300GB of disk space.
If you do decide than an XServe RAID is the right solution, consider getting it right-sized from the get-go rather than buying it small (e.g. 4 drives) and adding later. While it can be done, adding drives to an existing array is a PITA.
If you do opt for an XServe RAID, and you don't currently have any rack-mounted equipment, consider using a PowerMac G5 as your server rather than an XServe. While similar in terms of performance, the PowerMac can work out cheaper depending on configuration. -
Expanding xServe RAID Array - updated info sought.
I don't want to have to reformat the RAID and I don't want to lose data because...
1) The organization will suffer extended downtime.
2) I don't have ready access to 3TB of empty storage to back up the entire contents of the RAID.

My (familiar) situation.
I inherited administration responsibilities for an xServe RAID using the latest firmware (1.5.1).
The xServe is an intel xeon dual 2 GHz, running Mac OS X Server 10.6.8
The RAID had six (sigh) drives in the left controller. None in the right.
When I became admin, one of these six was dead. So I went on eBay and got three refurb ADM's.
--one to replace the dead drive.
--another to expand the RAID 5 to a full seven drives. (from 2.5T to 2.73T)
--a third to put on the shelf as a spare.
Now then.
The replacement drive rebuilt beautifully. Happy 6 drive RAID.
I put in the 7th drive and expanded. It took several days.
I'm at the point of "merging" slices that gives everyone pause about losing data.
Much discussion here about whether this can result in added capacity without destroying data relates to earlier versions of Mac OS X Server and G5 not Intel xServes. So that's a point that I think I could use some clarity on. Can Intel Macs can expand the file system with this slice-merging function without data loss whereas Power PC Macs cannot?
Next, my RAID as I inherited it was one slice. That is to say, one volume. One partition. In RAID Admin under "Arrays and Drives" all the little drives display a [1]. They did when the RAID was degraded to 5 drives. They did when I added the 6th drive replacement. They do now, having used the Expansion function under "Advanced" to add the 7th drive.
So, next question. WAS IT EVER SLICED?
That seems to be a deal-breaker for merging slices without data loss.
For this, I looked in RAID Admin to my Events tab which dates all the way back to 2008.
I see exactly zero mentions of slicing anywhere. Come with me on a journey, won't you?

How can I fix slow AFP writes to our Xserve RAID?
Hi,
This problem has been posted before but I couldn't find a solution. We have a Intel Xserve connected via fibre channel to a 14 disk 10.5 TB Xserve RAID. It's setup as two RAID5 volumes soft raided into one volumes (RAID 50).
There are multiple AFP shares on the RAID being served by the Xserve. The problem is that writes over AFP randomly go really slowly. Sampling using fs_usage shows a load of RdMeta operations from the AppleFilerServer process. I think it's the same issue that was posted here:

We've tried everything mentioned in that post - with no success. Has anyone managed to solve this problem? Many thanks,
JamieIt might be an HFS+ filesystem but because I'm seeing this on a simple striped RAID in a PowerMac. I was writing a script to look for system files starting with 32 zero bytes:
find /System/Library/ -type f -exec echo -n "{}:" \; -exec xxd -l 32 -c 64 -p {} \; | grep ':0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000' | cut -f 1 -d':'
Sometimes it appeared to halt for a long time and fs_usage showed RdMeta or WrMeta blasting along at ~100MB/s. After a few more runs it no longer has this problem. I wonder if there's a tuning bug in HFS hot file management or defragmentation. -
We have XSERV RAID MODEL A1009 with 4 Hard disk RAID 5.
Now I have installed CISCO 1000Base SX Module in 3 COM Switch & other same Module in XSERVER RAID. Now XSERVE RAID & switcted with Transeiver cable. Now I check RAID ADMIN TOOL FIber Channel Option the links shows down.
Let me know what is solution. Please also let me know how can I know that fiber link is up if any way.Finisar makes a nice SFP to LC transceiver (available on the Apple Store for $99.95 for 2 Gbit and $119.95 for 4 Gbit) that you can use in the Xserve to allow it to accept LC optical cables. You'll need 2 of these, and then you can hook up LC optical cables.
I'll echo the other post -- be aware those ports are for fibre channel communication ONLY. You must hook it to a fibre channel card (HBA) in a host, or to a fibre switch (i.e. Cisco MDX 9000 series). You cannot hook up a network connection to those ports -- Xserve RAID provides data ONLY over fibre channel, it is not a NAS device. You must connect it to a host which can re-share the data over Ethernet, for example Xserve RAID with OS X Server which can reshare using AFP, SMB/CIFS, NFS, FTP, DAV, and more. -
HI folks,
Earlier today I had a very brief powercut. When I went to the server room, my XSERVE RAID connected to my XSERVE was starting up again. However I noticed that the disc activity lights on right side of the XSERVE were off. The green light for the lower controller on the front (above the discs) and on the back was flashing green.
So what I hope someone will let me know is:
1: Are the discs dead?
2: Is the controller corrupted or needing replaced?
3: Or do I just have to do a proper shutdown and restart of the RAID?
The left array on the RAID is working fine and is mounted on the desktop of the XSERVE it's connected to.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Well nothing too bad happened! When I finally plucked up the courage to restart (pulling the plug since I couldn't connect via raid admin), everything started up fine!

All of the sudden my Xserve RAID is not responding. It does not seem to be turned on, though when I press the button with the speaker icon, a light appears. Nothing has been unplugged, or at least not that I can tell (I'm working on a complicated edit suite), it just won't start up nor interact with my computer. Please help!

Have you tried pressing the on button on the back?
Do you see status lights for the drive modules themselves? Have any of the FC cables become loose/dislodged or removed? Can you communicate with it using RAID Admin? Is your mac the host?
