Xserve Raid Crash Course Help Needed

We received two Xserve Raids loaded with 250 gig hard drives, fiber Channel Cards, all cables etc. We are a very small animation company. Is there any manuals or web pages to help us get started and learn how to set this equipment up? Apple manuals do not tell much, Thanks

I can only speak for myself but all of the above is what I've used and I've not had too many problems. It's advisable to purchase a UPS if you haven't already got one.
The host machine does not have to be an XServe.

  • Basic Xserve Raid Set Up Help

Please excuse the newbie question I have looked on the forum and cant quite find the info I need.
Can someone give me a step by step guide to setting up an Xserve raid please.
We have 2 G5s each running Final Cut Pro. We have just purchased a 7TB Xserve raid from Apple Refurb.
We would like a very simple set up where each G5 uses half of the Xserve. We do not have a fibre switch at this point - we do not need to share media however we will add this later.
So our initial requirement is a very basic 2xG5 each with a single fibre connection to each half of the Xserve. Sounds easy but . . .
We connected one of the G5s to both fibre ports in order to just set up the drives, once done we will simply disconnect one fibre cable and connect to the other G5.
We thought that the Xserve would be pre-configured to raid 5, which is what we would like to use. However upon connection there was a message that the drives were not readable and needed to be initialised. (the standard apple message if drive is not formatted)
We ignored this message and went to the drive utility to see if we could mount the drives and although it sees two drives, (each just under 3TB) as you would expect, it seems they are not mountable. (Since the drive utility saw 2 drives I assume that they are preconfigured to a raid)
So I looked in the raid utility and the only option is to 'add system'. If I click this I get a dialogue box asking for address and password. I understand the 'private' 'public' password and used the host computers IP address as there is no network.
I thought that this would take us through to the set up that allows you to create arrays and raid types etc.
So I am a bit stuck.
If the drives are preconfigured to raid 5 how can I mount them ? as that would be the simple config we need.
Or do I need to start from scratch ? Hence my request for a step by step guide.
best wishes and thanks for your help in advance
    Neil

I can't speak to exactly how the Xserve RAID comes from refurb but in general there are two steps to using the RAID.
    1) Create the RAIDs on the machines. (This takes some 30+ hours.)
    2) Format the new volumes. (This takes 2 minutes.)
Assuming the RAID came configured RAID 5 on each side and *you didn't shuffle the drive order* then they should still be configured and available that way. Apple doesn't assume that you are going to use the Xserve RAID with HFS+ formatting - they don't even assume you're going to use it with a Mac so I think the volumes are probably unformatted. My guess is that you are between steps 1 and 2 and you will need to choose the volumes in Disk Utility and format them to HFS+ (but probably not journalled if you are doing video work) and partition them.
You can get and set the actual RAID information using the Java tool RAID Admin.
You can (and should) connect to one of the ethernet ports on RAID unit, but the computer you connect will need to be in the same IP range (probably 169.254..) to get to the first time and run RAID Admin. This is how you can set-up, tweak and check the status of your RAID through software. This is also where you can set the IP of the RAID to be more in-line with your computers local network if you're using something different.

  • Constant crashes. Help needed bad.

I have a dual core intel on 10.5.8
I'm running Digital Performer and I'm getting at least 50 freezes a day.
I'll be recording, saving, or doing nothing and the DP will freeze ... spinning ball. I'm unable to Force Quit and I have to manually turn off the computer and restart. This has been INCREDIBLY frustrating for almost 3 months.
When I bought this mac, I did a migration from my G5 PPC (was on TIGER OS) but a few yrs later, I ugraded this Intel to 10.5.x and that's when all my problems started.
Here's the crash log where thread 0 crashed.
I've tried installing new RAM. Updating all my apps/software/OS. I'm at my wits end.
    if ANYONE can help ....

  • Freqeuent CS4 Crashes-Troubleshooting help needed

Constant crashes in Illustrator CS4 on a Mac are driving me crazy. I've done endless searches, tried many remedies and all have come up empty. Is there any way to use the crash logs or something to narrow this down (better yet, solve it)?
    Details: Illustrator CS4 (ver. 14.0.0) Mac OSX (10.6.8) on a MacPro4,1 Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2.66 GHz, 13 GB RAM. NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 graphics card, DELL (E2311H) primary monitor 1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz, DELL (P170S) secondary monitor 1280 x 1024 @ 60 Hz.
The files are quite large packaging files on an artboard of 58 x 44" and have gradients, a few glows, shadows on text and vector objects, 26-30 linked raster images (mostly TIFF, occasionally a few PSD), clipping paths and only one font family (Univers LT Std).
Redraw of gradients, shadows etc. has been painfully slow and I took several steps to speed things up to eleviate an otherwise impossibly slow file. All files are on a the startup drive (415 GB available space), when possible images slimmed down (flattened, unnecessary layers deleted), and saved with PDF compatibility turned off. Set the Document Raster Effects settings to 72 dpi. All those steps has greatly improved the ability to actually work on the files without constant pauses, but it can still be a bit slow and the frequent crashes are infuriating. Often times, mostly when a second mechanical file is open, it will give me the error message that Illustrator is unable to render the preview (can't finish previewing) and goes into Outline view. Other times redraw will hang (Illustrator will not recover and a force quit must be done), or it will just crash.
All the hangs and crashes are on redraw and my focus has been on that. New RAM was added early in this process so it was immediately suspect but after running several tests on RAM and hardware (which came up with nothing) it seems that cannot be the problem. This machine was upgraded to OS 10.6.8, I disconnected the secondary monitor, tried disabling the processor Hyper-Threading. I tried a fresh install of Illustrator. I tried repairing disk permissions several times. I tried creating fresh Illustrator files as well as Save-As for the most troublesome mechanicals but crashes continue.
Is there anything I can do to nail down the exact cause and get a solution???

I've tried doing creating and distilling individual pages based on where distiller is at when it crashes, but no luck so far. I guess I'll have to go page by page to see which one causes the problem. But I've got a feeling that none of the individual pages are going to cause the issue. Is is possible for the program to accumulate enough errors that it eventually crashes?

As I said, there have been reports on there of problems for some people using 2008, as you have experienced with particular components of the suite.
Best solution would be an upgrade to 2011...I have had no issues at all using 2011 with Mac OS X 10.7.4.

  • 2nd Xserve RAID + Xsan = ?

    So here's the situation...
There's an existing Xserve RAID shared via Xsan... Works great, except we're running out of storage space.
So we've purchased a second Xserve RAID, I've set it up in the RAID Admin and it seems to be all happy and good...
I then go to Xsan Admin and to the Luns tab, but the raid is no where to be found...
What do I need to do to make sure the new RAID can be added to the Xsan.
    Thanks Much
    Tommy

Definitely check the zoning on the fibre channel switch. In general it's a good idea to create a zone that has ONLY the computers and the storage you care about included. Which would mean if you add additional computers they can't see your SAN storage if you don't want them to.
This also means you need to broaden the zone and add 2 more ports when you add the second Xserve RAID, of course.

  • Does Xserve Raid 3.5 TB supports HD uncompress?

Does exist any configuration for Xserve Raid 3.5TB 7 drives, that supports HD Uncompress 720p 10 bit video formats?
Will I get that only with 14 drives?
Can I get that with 8 drives? 4 drives in each controller.
    Thanks

What's the data rate -- how many frames per second?
A common list is on the Xsan page:
    http://www.apple.com/xsan/videoworkflow.html
    I'd say if you're at 24 or 30 FPS:
    720p 24fps 46MBps
    720p 30fps 50MBps
You would be okay with 7 drives in half an Xserve RAID. If you need more than that, you'd need 14 drives.
If you're doing 1080i uncompressed, definitely you need all 14 drives striped in a RAID 50.

  • Xserve RAID setup for mixed platform office

In our office we have several Macs and Windows machines that regularly read the same files during various tests we run. Unfortunately these files are spread out across various drives on various systems and many of the files are duplicated in many places.
To make us more efficient as well as provide reliable backup for our critical test files I'm considering an Xserve RAID setup.
I understand a computer is needed as a controller and an Xserve is typically used for this. Could a Dual 2GHz G5 serve this purpose? It needs OS X Server installed? Does the G5 get a Fibre Channel card in order to connect to the G5 to the RAID and then the rest of the office can connect to the G5 to access the RAID via GigE.
We are not editing video, I don't see that all the clients need Fibre.
How about Windows clients, are they able to seemlessly access the RAID just like Macs?

    > I understand a computer is needed as a controller and an Xserve is typically used for this
Yes, you need a controller, but it doesn't need to be an XServe. Any host will do.
    > Could a Dual 2GHz G5 serve this purpose
Yes, quite easily. You just need an appropriate fiber channel card in the host that you're attaching the XServe RAID to.
    > It needs OS X Server installed?
No. You don't even need Mac OS X installed - the XServe RAID is platform agnostic and can be used with Windows, Linux, and other Unix systems.
     > Does the G5 get a Fibre Channel card in order to connect to the G5 to the RAID and then the rest of the office can connect to the G5 to access the RAID via GigE.
Correct. You'd use some kind of file sharing on the G5 to share the XServe RAID to the network clients. The only caveat is that Mac OS X Client only supports 10 active client connections. If you need more than that you may need Mac OS X Server.
As for the Windows clients, they can access the RAID volume through the G5, too - you'll just need to enable SMB file sharing on the G5.

  • Xserve G5 crashing, help needed please

    Hi All
I have an Xserve G5 which has become very unstable. I did post this in another discussion group but figure this one maybe more helpful...
The problem first occurred a few months back with Samba generating huge log files so this service was deactivated.
The CPU activity will go through the roof and the main culprits seem to be PasswordService and cupsd
The services running on the machine are:
    AFP
    DHCP
    DNS
    Firewall
    FTP - Using CrushFTP 4.4.2
Mail - Using Kerio MailServer 6.4.1 patch 1 build 3801
    NAT
    OD Master
    QLAServer 4.01
    Web
    The specs are:
    Dual 2GHz G5 7GB RAM 10.4.11 Server
    Xserve RAID connected
Tandberg StorageLoader connected via SCSI card, Retrospect runs every evening for a few hours backing up a server volume and client machines.
No video card installed so use ARD 3.2 if I need GUI access
I rebuilt OD last weekend and did the 10.4.11 update and all looked ok until both PasswordService and cupsd crashed around the same time on Tuesday morning.
Below is a snippet from some log files:
cupsd error log file is full of the following, approx. 12,000 lines
E 20/Nov/2007:08:07:32 +0000 Unable to accept client connection - Too many open files.
The cupsd access log file has thousands of this entry:
    localhost - - 20/Nov/2007:09:50:14 +0000 "POST / HTTP/1.1" 200 306
    localhost - - 20/Nov/2007:09:50:14 +0000 "POST / HTTP/1.1" 200 201
    localhost - - 20/Nov/2007:09:50:14 +0000 "POST /jobs/ HTTP/1.1" 200 216
The ApplePasswordServer error log file is filled with the following, approx. 600,000 lines:
Nov 20 2007 08:06:17 Unknown listener exception error.
There are 5 35MB log files full of this error generated from the crash.
Any help in diagnosing this problem would be greatly appreciated and I will post more entries from any log files if needed.
    Thanks very much in advance.
    Paul

Should confirm the Xserve is running 10.4.11
Kerio Mail Server is not running as an open relay and we do get a fair amount of junk mail intercepted by the spam filter which averages about 300-400 per day with an additional smaller number making it through to various users inbox. The mail server user accounts are all synced by LDAP so I assume the PasswordService crash stopped Kerio.
This afternoon java CPU cycles went sky high, which has happened a few times over the last month or so, and returned to normal after quitting the process in the activity monitor. Then found I could not send an email but stopping then starting the mail server fixed this issue.
The following in the console log from this afternoon:

The server had been running Retrospect for about 24 hrs before this occurred and will post the Retrospect crash log if needed.
My main concerns at present are:
Is there too much load in the server which is leading to these problems.
Could this possibly be a hardware fault, though nothing is indicated in the System Monitor.
Could this be triggered by an outside influence such as a concerted hacking attempt?
    Many thanks

  • Newbie here...Need help for XServe RAID w/ XSAN in Vid Editing environment

We're establishing an XSAN environment for video editing work flow. We're not new to SAN technology or video editing, but we are new to Xserve RAIDs, XSAN technology, and marrying them together in a production environment.
We have an XServe RAID at 14x750GB configuration. 1 Xserve metadata server, 1 Xserve Quicktime server, and 4 editing stations (2 MacPro's, 2 G5's) that are in the fiber channel fabric. Each machine has dual channel 4GB cards.
My PLEA for help concerns any advice this community can offer on RAID configuration, and XSAN configuration to achieve maximum performance. Settings, configurations, etc.
XServe, XServe RAID, XSAN, MacPro, G5 Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Were on the same boat but more like a life jacket
We only need the Fibre for back-up.
We have a single Avid Adrenaline on MacPro.
One Xserve that basically acts as a server for fonts, audioclips, photocatalog and minor back-up via gigabit ethernet.
Three G5s/MacPro/PC with 2/4GB FC installed.
    One 10.5 TB Xserve RAID.
Last but not least a QLogic 1400 SAN box for Fibre.
Nothing is installed yet as were waiting on our Apple rep for some answers with Xsan.
Were not serving anything as far as external network and everything stays within the confines of our studio.
My question is that are we missing anything other than maybe getting more ports on the SAN.
We can live with a few workstations in the fabric.
    Thanks in advance

  • Xserve RAID NO Power, need help please

    HI all,
i have Xserve RAID, last night i shut down it normally, today i came to switch on, but its not responding, i can see only the Green LED on the power supply is blinking. NO POWER.
please if you can help ASAP.
    thanks

    hi
    thanks for your reply,
i have tried to do everything, i removed one of the power supplies at each time, but same. i pressed the power button on the back, but nothing happened.
finally i opened the case of the XSR, i was surprised to find that the power cable between the power button on the back and the main board is disconnected, how i don't know, i never open it before, i vever move it, i don't know it was just disconnected.
any way, its working now, thanks all

  • Newbie lesson - xServe RAID boxes need 2 Controller modules to work well!

So I thought I'd share my experience with my xServe RAID box, because I built it from parts (via eBay) I thought I could run it with a single controller with up to 7 drives until I needed to expand it later, I had all sorts of strange problems:
    - Could't build new RAID arrays
    - Couldn't update firmware
    - Restarting box often led to the array disappearing
    - Existing array sometimes didn't show up in Disk Util.
I tried replacing cables and Fibre cards but no change until I added a second RAID controller and then suddenly everything worked great!
Thanks to everyone here for trying to help me out with my problems, the box now runs great
So the lesson here is that an xServe RAID box needs 2 controllers to function properly, with only 1 it runs in some kind of undocumented failsafe mode.

See my response to your crosspost in the Xserve RAID group.

  • Copy from xServe RAID to firewire drive is crashing my OS...

    Fellow mac users,
I am a relatively new OS X system admin and I am having a hard time copying files from my xServe RAID to a firewire drive to do an intermittent backup. When I try to copy the files over it crashes the OS without fail. I was wondering if anyone has ever heard or seen of this before? It's rather discouraging when all I'm trying to do is get a quick backup of the RAID which is only 300 gb in size currently.
Our hardware is very good, we have a dual 2.3 G5 model with 3 gb of RAM so I know the hardware can handle a simple finder copy. The only idea I have is to do a "ditto" in the terminal. I thought I'd ask for input from the resident apple sages before trying that. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas for me?
    Thanks for any help,
    Thomas
    xServe Dual G5 Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Be sure you have the external drive connected when you boot from the installer disc. Use the OS X Installer One disc that came with your MacBook. After you boot from the installer and select your language select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) for the external drive from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Click on the Options button, select the GUID partition scheme and click on the OK button. Set the Format drop down menu to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the number of partitions from the Partition drop down menu to one (1). Click on the Partition button. Wait for the volume to mount on the Desktop.
Quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with the OS X installation. When you get to the part where you select a destination click on the icon for the external hard drive.

  • Help needed! Raid degraded again!

    Hi!
Help needed! I hava made bootable RAID with two S-ATAII 250Gb HDD and its not working! Every now and then at bootup I get a message RAID -> DEGRADED... Must be seventh time! Rebuild takes its own time!
    What am I doing wrong!

    K8N Neo4 Ultra
    AMD 64 4200+
    2 Gb RAM
    2 x 250 Gb HDD (Maxtor)
    nVidia RAID (in mb)
P.S. I wery SORRY with my poor language!

I'm going to blame the nVRAID because I've seen issues with it in the past. If your motherboard has another non-nVidia RAID solution, use that instead. Using the nVidia SATA ports as BASE or JBOD is fine and dandy but RAIDing always had issues. It's not even a driver issue I think it's just instability. Latest drivers and even boxed drivers never helped. Granted, some will report success with their rig. But on a professional level I've seen nForce issues on different motherboards and different hard drives that had RAID disaster stories.
Good luck and if you don't have another RAID solution, my suggestion would be to buy a dedicated RAID controller card.
