Xserve RAID lost RAID 5 array on right/bottom controller

I cleanly shut down an Xserve G5 with an Xserve RAID attached and then powered off the Xserve RAID this morning. I replaced a failing memory module in the Xserve and moved the rack 6". I then powered on the Xserve RAID, waited for a couple minutes until it was fully booted, and then booted the Xserve. When it came up, my RAID 50 volume failed to mount. Upon further investigation, it appears that the RAID 5 array on the right hand disks is "gone". In RAID Admin (Disks and Drives tab), the left side array is visible, but all disks on the right side list status as "OK" and Type: as "Spare".
Configuration: Xserve RAID with 14 250 GB disks. Each side was configured with 6 disks in a RAID 5 array and one spare. These were striped using Software RAID on the Xserve into RAID 50 and mounted as a single volume. The RAID firmware is currently 1.5 and the Xserve is running OS X Server 10.4.3.
To summarize today's activities: under Apple's guidance (as this entire system is covered under a Premium Support contract), I swapped the (bottom) controller for the right side, updated firmware (from v1.3/1.20a to 1.5/1.50), multiple resets of both controllers, repeated forced firmware updates, etc.
Also, I swapped the left set of disks for the right set, and the array from the left set now shows up on the right side, and the missing array from the right is still missing with the disks on the left side. I replaced the disks to their original positions with the same results.
RAID Admin's Utility "Recognize Array" will not perform any operations on the rigth side disks and Apple tells me that there's nothing further that I can do with it.
None of this has solved the problem or substantially changed the issue, and the disks on the right side are still missing their associated array. Apple is unable/unwilling to offer any further help except to refer me to 3rd party data recovery services.
Does anyone have any suggestion at all that might possibly recover the missing array? Is anyone aware of any tools that I might use to recreate the RAID 5 array on the right controller? I was hoping that there might exist some low-level tools with which the disks could be recreated into an array by hand? Are there any commercial products that would work on this? Any other ideas?
Many thanks for any suggestions.
- Martin
Xserve RAID (14 250GB disks) on Xserve G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Not sure why you swapped the controllers back and forth
William, I don't think I was clear on this. I swapped the controller with a new controller that I had in a spare parts kit. This was at Apple's request.
really, RAID is not a backup...
I'm well aware, but despite my incessant warnings, users will become lulled in to a false sense of security when something "just works" for a very long time. This array wasn't intended to store valuable data that couldn't be lost, but...
It may be possible for Apple to re-create the RAID set, did you ask AppleCare about the possibility?
Apple has told me more than once that there's nothing else that they can do for me...and yet I keep calling back.
I was surprised that this array was lost when there were absolutely no prior signs of a problem and the system was merely shutdown and restarted cleanly. I'm more surprised and quite disappointed to learn that Apple will do nothing else for me (under a Premium Support contract) to attempt to repair a damaged array. When I asked questions about where the RAID information is stored, I received the answers: "I can't tell you that" and "Apple doesn't release that information". I did not get the feeling that they were working with me, but rather holding my hand while they walked me through published documentation.
I expected that there would be utilities (analagous to filesystem repair utilities) such as RAID Admin's "Recognize Array" that could help repair and recover damaged array data. I think that the lesson that I've leanred today is that I was naive to have expected such a thing without actually having investigated it ahead of time.
Anyway, thanks for your input, William.

  • Ghost/Clone Program to rebuild RAID 1 array on a SAS6IR Controller

Can anyone suggest a ghost/clone program I can use to rebuild a RAID 1 array on a SAS6IR controller. I also would like to increase the size of the C:/ drive. The server is a Dell PowerEdge T105 running windows 2008 R2.

"Cloning isn't a supported process with Dell, as it can cause issues and instability in the array"
I do not understand Dell's stance on cloning. Unless and array already has issues such as a double fault, puncture, major chkdsk errors cloning is a practical/safe means of porting an array over to a new array, with or without resizing, or porting over to a different array type.
The rebuild from scratch/restore method, on a complicated server, is time consuming, tedious, expensive, and pressure involved.  Have servers with multiple resident programs, multiple SQL instance etc etc which manually could take over 30 hours to rebuild; rather expensive, especially if for some reason it must be accomplished during working hours. In my experience, I have ported smaller arrays to larger array at least 40 times and never had any issues. Have cloned between different controllers, the on board disk interface(motherboard) and Percs, between different arrays...always works.
Used different cloning softwares, primarily Acronis. Granted if you use a little known cloning software and or do not test your array for errors previous to cloning you could have issues. Go from scratch/restore on a complicated server and you will have issues, especially if your not the one who built the server originally.

  • Seeking advice for backing up Xserve G5 w/ RAID PCI card

    Hello all!
I'm a newbie to Macs and server admin, and I have inherited the job of setting up a server at work for file storage. I'll do my best to give a concise description of our set-up - I'm looking for some advice on the last few odds and ends... mainly how we can backup the system.
We bought an Xserve G5 with an option RAID PCI card. We have 3 500GB drives in the Xserve, configured to RAID 5 (giving us effectively 1TB of storage space). We will be using the server for data storage. About 20 computers will access the server over a network; we are using an assortment of Macs and PCS.
I am seeking advice on backup systems for the server. In the event that the RAID5 fails, we don't want to lose our data. We just need a snapshot of the server; we don't need to archive data or to take the HD offsite. Our old server just used Retrospect to run incremental backups every night (with a complete clean backup once a month). Our current thought is to attach large external hard drive to our admin computer (not the server directly) and run nightly backups as before.
The major points I have are:
-Any thoughts on reliable 1 TB external drives?
-Any recommendations on software that can backup from a RAID over a network? I found info for Retrospect Server 6.0 - it seems to do what we want, but is rather pricey.
Thanks in advance for any advice! I really appreciate it!
    Xserve G5 Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Greetings-
We all started out as newbies at one time or another-no worries. That is why we are here.
I personally use the Lacie branded drives. They are sturdy and reliable. My only thoughts here are to have at least three external drives-one for today's backup, one for a backup stored securely nearby, and one to be securely stored off-site. Rotate the drives daily so that your worst-case scenario will be a catastrophe that requires you to use a three-day old backup, depending upon how old your off-site backup is. Not ideal but better than the alternative. External drives are cheap enough these days to allow you to do this at a reasonable cost. Plus it is easy enough to throw one in a briefcase and tote it home for safety (just don't lose it!)
I would stay away from Retrospect. If you search these forums you will find several instances of folks having some serious issues with the program. I use a program called Carbon Copy Cloner that does the job nicely for my basement server. There are ways to do the backups via the command line interface as well but I am not so familiar with those commands. You may have to dig a little deeper to find something that works for you.
One of the other advantages of the FW external drive is that you can share it with other users, so perhaps you can set things up to have your network backups to go to that drive. Tis a thought.
    Luck-

  • KT3 Ultra2-R, RAID - single disc array

There are threads on this forum that discuss how to create a single disc array using onboard RAID to free up IDE1 and 2 for non-HDD devices.
What exactly does the following taken directly from the KT3 Ultra2-R page on MSI.com mean?
"Note: Only two hard disk drives will adopt the RAID function."
Does this mean that only a maximum of two arrays can be created using either 2, 3 or 4 physical hard drives?

My guess is that the wording of that warning is poor. What it is trying to say is that while four physical drives can be attached to IDE RAID those four physical drives can only be configured as 4 single disc arrays, 2 two disc arrays, or 2 single disc arrays and 1 two disc array.
Instead of "Note: Only two hard disk drives will adopt the RAID function." perhaps "Note: Each array can contain a maximum of two physical drives."
Also, risk_reversal, have you noticed whether or not the physical location of the connection to RAID affects the array? I currently have one single disc array on IDE3 master. If I move a new drive to that location and connect the current drive on IDE4 will that affect the array currently created for that physical drive?
I assume that the drive letters will change but other than that, is the RAID BIOS identifying the drives by some id other than just which IDE they are connected to?

  • Apple Xserver Raid, 1 raid mounts and the other raid does not mount

Apple Xserver Raid, 1 raid mounts and the other raid does not mount but all the lights on the drives are green

Kind of lacking in detail there...
Did the other volume mount in the past? and it stopped working? When? What changed?
What does Raid Admin.app have to say about it?
Does it see the drives? a RAID set on those drives? A link on the fiber channel connection?

  • Pls help! I cleared CMOS now I've lost RAID: P35 platinum

    Hi all,
Last night I had a problem with my PC not reading a CD. I read on another forum that it may be a problem with my CD drive not being recognised and it recommended pressing the 'clear CMOS' button then rebooting the system.
However, I have now lost RAID. It boots fine on one drive but lists the other as simply another drive. I went back into the BIOS and re-activated RAID, but when I do this the operating system fails to boot and gives me an error message saying:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    <windows root> system32\config\system
I have backed everything up while the machine is good, but would dearly not want to have to re-install everything again!
Is there any way I can recover it to the way it was before?
I did a search a found this thread, not entirely sure if it's the same problem:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=35930.0
    Cheers,
    Zap
    Details of my system:
Mobo: MSI P35 Platinum 1333MHZ FSB, Processor: Intel Q6600 2.4GHZ, 4GB ram, HDD: 2 x 500GB Samsung in RAID (mirrored)
    Operating System:XP SP3

Ok guys, here are the further details: (BTW triangle, it's RAID1).
In the BIOS here are some of the settings i've applied:
    On chip ATA devices:
    PCI IDE busmaster = Enabled
    RAID mode = RAID
The boot sequence is set to:
    1. CD ROM
    2. One of the HDD's (2 are listed as being available)
    3. Disabled
Now, it boots OK to the Intel Storage Manager page. If I press CTRL-I to open the configuration utility I get the following details:
    RAID 1
    ID = 0
    Name = Volume 0
    Status = Normal
    Bootable = Yes
So if I exit, it goes to attempt to boot XP. However before I get any sign of life from XP I get this error message:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.
Now if I set RAID mode = IDE in the BIOS the system will boot normally on one HDD. At the moment I can open explorer and see that the 2 HDDs are listed as Local Disc (C:) and Local Disc (E:)'.
I checked the SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM on both the HDD's and found a difference in the file size between the two- I'm guessing because I'm currently using one disc and ignoring the other.
    SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM file sizes:
    Local Disc (C:) = 40.9MB (41.1MB size on disc)
    Local Disc (E:) = 40.6MB (40.8MB size on disc)
So I assume because the two files don't match XP treats them as being corrupt when in RAID 1 mode.
Can I simply copy the SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM file from one disc to the other? What about the other items on the disc that don't match considering that other files have changed aside from this one?
Should I attempt to copy the entire C drive to the E drive....?????
    Thanks again guys,
    Cheers Zap.

  • Mac Pro RAID Card - RAID 5 capacity with 4 drives

    Greetings everyone,
last weekend, I installed a Mac Pro RAID card in my Mac Pro, gave it 4 Samsung 1TB disks to play with and set up a RAID 5 array on it. However, the capacity is less than what I would have expected (expected around 2.8TB and got 2.38TB).
After some searching on the Apple Support pages, I found this ...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306212
... support article stating that in a 4 column RAID 5, the capacity indeed could be less than expected due to "data placement and layout techiques".
Does anyone know the technical reason behind this? Any other RAID 5 I know, hardware or otherwise, does not have this quirk.
Is there any way to work around this? If not, are there any other, comparable RAID cards that get this right?
    Thanks in advance,
    -sai

    Hi sairath;
With RAID 5 one of the drive is devoted to Parity so that the data can be restored in case of a drive failure. Hence you are only going to see the space for three of the drive so your results sound pretty normal.

  • How do I Position Tabs Top-Right, Bottom-Right, etc??

I've spent countless hours looking over the net and here trying to find anything that shows how to position tabs within a JTabbedPane (or a deriviative of it) in OTHER than top-left, left-top, right-top or bottom-left.
My most immediate need is to put the tabs top-right, and I was able to modify the layout to do that, but that screwed up all other positions. When I hacked up the paint method to changed the rects, it worked until the tabs lost focus.
Digging really deep into an extension of JTabbedPane, TabbedPaneUI, and the inner TabbedPaneLayout, I kept running into dead-ends in one place or the other, like, finding private methods, or different mechanisms for getting the tabplacement.
If anyone has any pointers, please let me know. At the moment, I'm so exasperated that I'm actually writing my own custom tabbed pane. However, my tabbed pane will allow ANY component as a tab and allow 12 anchors for the tabs, but I'd still just like to get the tabs top right.
    Java Joe Morgan

You're friggin' kiddn' me! OK.. that makes me feel really stupid... but I generally think of component orientation as an internationalization thing and it simply never dawned on me to try!
I'll get a big laugh out of this some day... somewhat like you are right now!
Thanks... you've saved me about only a zillion lines of code.
Things to note for those finding this answer:
    1) For left and right tab runs, this doesn't have an effect, but why would it? Yet, it might have been nice to have a right-bottom or left-bottom.
    2) For top and bottom tab locations, if you want the tab order the same left to right order as you add them, you have to add the tab components in reverse order. That is, in your code you add Tab1, Tab2, Tab3, and set component orientation right to left, your tabs will be, left to right, Tab3, Tab2, Tab1. So to get tabs positioned on the right (top or bottom) and left to right order Tab1, Tab2, Tab3, you'll need to add them Tab3, Tab2, Tab1.

  • RAID A RAID

I want to RAID 3-250's by striping and then RAID that RAID with a 750 by mirroring.
If this cannot by done, will Leopard's TimeMachine work just as well if I select the 750 as it's backup destination?
    Thanks.
    Mike

Mirror isn't a replacement for backup. And mirroring 3 drives to one is... not the way mirrors are done, when done right. You could mirror the three 250's which give you "stripped read ability" but not the write performance.
If you have 450GB of data on those three drives, you should have more than one backup drive (I consider two backup sets, that you alternate, as minimum protection).

  • Dynamic position of an image at the right bottom of the browser window

    Dear Dreamweaver-community,
I'm trying to have an image positioned at the bottom right of a html-page. It is embedded in a table so that it doesn't interfere with the rest of the site's content (which it would if I simply used an absolute position). The height of the table is height=100% and I thought that this would make sure that if the browser window is being dragged smaller or bigger the image stays at the bottom right (just as the content stays centered if you set the width of a table to 100% and center it). But if you make the browser window higher the image won't keep sticking to the right bottom but will stay in one place while the rest of the page (bottom) is simply filled with the black background color. Do you have any ideas what I'm missing out on? Is there something like a valign-tag for a table or the page's body that dynamically keeps the image at the bottom right position no matter how you change the size of the window? I hope you can help me. Thank you!

  • Where can I find the 'lock' sign when I enter a verified website. In prior versions, it used to show up on the status bar in the right bottom

How can I verify in firefox 4 if the webpage I'm on is secured? in prior versions the 'lock' sign was popping up on the statusbar in the right bottom.

I understand the reasoning behind removing this. I have worked in IT for 30 years, I like how this works in FF4. My concern, however, is that my 75 year-old parents do not, all they know is that for the last 10 years I have been telling them that if they don't see a padlock they should not enter any sensitive information. They will never click on the verification button, nor would they understand any of the information there anyway. In addition color coding the button does not help my color blind father nor my nearly-blind mother.
I have been a huge proponent of FireFox since the original beta, but I will now begin telling all of my non-technical family and friends that come to me for IT advice to use a different browser, because I have neither the time nor the patience to retrain them.

  • XServe Raid lost Array #2 after power outage

    Hi..
I've had an unfortunate incident with my XServe RAID.. it lost power, and when restarted array 1 came up, but #2 is showing the drives' status as all "spare" and no configured array.
Our first thought was to use the "recognize array" utility in Raid Admin, but (after upgrading to the latest firmware) when choosing either controller the recognize button is greyed out, as if it doesn't want to. If i'm reading the support docs correctly, the drives might actually need to be showing as "available" rather than "spare" - but I'm understanably hesitant to just issue the make drive available command in case that hoses the data that (we hope) is still on the drives.
other details are that array 1 is connected to an Xserve and array 2 (should be) talking to a win2k3 box, via their respective FC interfaces. the power outage was uncontrolled and affected all machines (UPS failure) and startup was also unattended which is worrying me that the 2k3 box might have done something to array 2 on the way back up.
naturally i'm googling this one like crazy but haven't yet found any relevant info. hoping a suggestion or two here might set me in the right direction?
not a nice way to spend a weekend - but at least i have until monday morning to sort it..
    thanks in advance..

Thanks for the feedback - unfortunately we'd already tried the complete power-down solution and no go. One thing i found out in the process was that we don't have the battery backup units installed, I think that might be a wise investment for next time.
We found a number of similar posts on the subject.. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1471056&tstart=165 and http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5949583&#5949583 and in the end just went with recreating the array and restoring from backup - it seems like the only option in this case... so i'll mark this thread closed.
