Xserve raid shows power state UPS backup

How do I change the power state from UPS backup to on like the rest of the xserve raids we have? None of the xserve raids we have ever used a UPS so I do not know why this one is showing power state UPS Backup under the information tab of the GUI.
This is annoying since it's causing the circle to be yellow instead of green. Any ideas or suggestions?

Never seen this. Does it help if you temporally disconnect the power cable?

    HI all,
i have Xserve RAID, last night i shut down it normally, today i came to switch on, but its not responding, i can see only the Green LED on the power supply is blinking. NO POWER.
please if you can help ASAP.
    thanks

    hi
    thanks for your reply,
i have tried to do everything, i removed one of the power supplies at each time, but same. i pressed the power button on the back, but nothing happened.
finally i opened the case of the XSR, i was surprised to find that the power cable between the power button on the back and the main board is disconnected, how i don't know, i never open it before, i vever move it, i don't know it was just disconnected.
any way, its working now, thanks all

  • XServe Raid showing twice

we recently bought a FC switch , and I'd like to use it to transfer files between 2 Raids
each of 2 Raids would be connected to the switch using two channels
when we connect the host to the switch through one channel the volumes show up correctly , but the speed isn't as fast as one would expect
if we connect the host using two channels , the volumes show up twice on the desktop ??
how can I tell OS X that it IS the same volume , and have it use the second link to speed up the transfer , not to mount the same drive again ?
    Thanks

Since everything is connected through a switch, each fiber channel port on the server can see each fiber channel port on the RAID, which is why you're seeing double.
The solution is to use LUN masking - configure the RAID so that one controller can be seen by one port on the host while the other controller is seen by the other. RAID Admin has the controls for these under the 'Advanced' tab.

  • Xserve raid midplane(?) troubleshooting help

    Hi,
I just inherited an XServe RAID with 12 180GB drives. My question is thus:
If I put the single RAID controller in the top slot, It recognizes all drives on the left side of the RAID, which is expected
If I put the single RAID controller in the bottom slot, it does not recognize any drives in any slots even if I swap those drives from the left side to the right (to rule out 5 bad drives.
I have two empty sleds that are on the right side of the RAID as well.
I am guessing, having never owned one before, that this is likely a problem with the midplane. Is there a way to troubleshoot the midplane? I very quick inspection, didn't reveal anything that was obvious. I plan on doing a more thorough inspection over the weekend.
I am also making the assumption that I do not have to have a controller in the top slot for the bottom controller to work since the top controller works without having a controller in the bottom slot.
    Any help/insight would be appreciated

LIttle Update in case it would help someone with more knowledge of this than I:
When the Controller is in the lower position:
    or
which I find interesting since I don't have an upper controller installed and the cooling modules both show as missing even though they exist (though 1 is failed).
If I look at the other tabs:
Info: Shows only Name: XServe RAID and Power State: On
Arrays & Drives: Shows Not Installed for all drives on that side of the XServe RAID
Fibre Channel is blank as I don't currently have it connected to my XServe
Events shows nothing of significance to me other than all disks online
When the controller is in the upper position however:
I am curious as to why the RAID controller shows as present in both slots when it clearly is not however.
Hoping it was just a cable from the midplane to the unit, I swapped cables this morning hoping for a failure, but did not get such failure, so I have ruled out the cable. The Controller seems to work when it is in the top slot, so I think that the controller is likely good as well. So I guess I can sum it up as:
Power supplies: Good x2, shows a green light in either slot, swapped in testing
Batteries: Good x2; Swapped in testing, Swapped in testing, works in upper slot, does not in lower slot
Cooling Unit: Good x2; Swapped in testing, works in upper slot, does not in lower slot
Controller: Good x1; works in upper slot, does not work in lower slot
Which leads me back to the midplane as there isn't much else inside this unit that I can see that could go wrong. Does this sound like an accurate assessment? I ask because I want to be confident I have found the issue prior to ordering a new backplane.
Once again, thanks in advance for any information.

  • Xserve Raid Not Showing all Drives Empty - No Green Lights on Xserve Raid Drives

I have an Xserve Raid.  I recently set it up with my Xserve server with fiber cables and now when the Xserve Raid system boots and starts all the drives show as empty in the Raid monitor.  Not sure if I have something configured wrong and I think I shut it down incorrectly before I got it hooked up right.  When I first got it I was able to see the lights on all the drives but now it boots but no drives show up at all.  I have fiber cables to the host Xserve machine and the Xserve Raid plugged into the network with only 1x  ethernet cables (not 2 if that makes a difference).  When I try to manage the Xserve Raid all drives show as empty even though all the 500GB drives are plugged in.  Not seeing any green lights when the Xserve raid boots indicates something is up.  I reset the controller cards to stock with the paper clip to factory settings.  Does anyone have any ideas on what to try.  Anyone have this issue?  I haven't found any discussions except one that had a single side of drives go down because of a bad controller card.  My Xserve Raid shows no drives at all.  Any help is appreciated.

Expansion is a 2 step process: First, you expand the array. Second, you merge the slices. The documentation is clear on step #2, but the GUI doesn't FORCE you to do it. However, it is necessary.
If you did both steps, try rebooting your host and see if it picks up the changed size. It does work... the usual issue though is growing the file system to recognize the additional size. On Linux, I can't help you.

  • VRRP State is Backup

I am currently running VRRP on my remote locations. The configuration are identical between them all for VRRP. When doing our backup tests we noticed that several of the Routers were not showing VRRP State is Backup on the interfaces that we have configured. The two noticable difference are that the working model is a 2801 running 15.0(1) M4 and the one that does not show up properly is a 2901 running 15.2(2) T1. Is this an IOS visual bug or something else?

  • XServe Raid lost Array #2 after power outage

    Hi..
I've had an unfortunate incident with my XServe RAID.. it lost power, and when restarted array 1 came up, but #2 is showing the drives' status as all "spare" and no configured array.
Our first thought was to use the "recognize array" utility in Raid Admin, but (after upgrading to the latest firmware) when choosing either controller the recognize button is greyed out, as if it doesn't want to. If i'm reading the support docs correctly, the drives might actually need to be showing as "available" rather than "spare" - but I'm understanably hesitant to just issue the make drive available command in case that hoses the data that (we hope) is still on the drives.
other details are that array 1 is connected to an Xserve and array 2 (should be) talking to a win2k3 box, via their respective FC interfaces. the power outage was uncontrolled and affected all machines (UPS failure) and startup was also unattended which is worrying me that the 2k3 box might have done something to array 2 on the way back up.
naturally i'm googling this one like crazy but haven't yet found any relevant info. hoping a suggestion or two here might set me in the right direction?
not a nice way to spend a weekend - but at least i have until monday morning to sort it..
    thanks in advance..

Thanks for the feedback - unfortunately we'd already tried the complete power-down solution and no go. One thing i found out in the process was that we don't have the battery backup units installed, I think that might be a wise investment for next time.
We found a number of similar posts on the subject.. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1471056&tstart=165 and http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5949583&#5949583 and in the end just went with recreating the array and restoring from backup - it seems like the only option in this case... so i'll mark this thread closed.

  • XServe RAID disks not showing up in Disk Utility

I have a new (to me) xServe RAID box and I'm stuck, the stays lights are green the fiber link light is green on the RAID and not lit on the PCI card but shows up as green in the fiber link section of the settings tool but the RAID array doesn't show up in Disk Utility so I can't format the drives.
I set up the disks as Enhanced JBOD using RAIDadmin and I've deleted and created it a couple of times, I'm just not sure what else I should try, I've read the manual but. Can't find any suggestions of what's going wrong.
    Thanks

    Port 1: Link Established
    2Gps
    Point to point
    Status light green
In the system Profiler I'm not sure what you're asking for, I'm running 10.5.8 standard not server.
the fibre channel shows link established 2Gps and cable type copper but nothing else, the disks & RAID controller don't show up anywhere I've looked.
RAID Admin shows the JBOD disks as online and lists the LUNs etc.
System looks fine, only error is missing second power supply.

  • XServe-RAID Offsite Backup

I was hoping to use the left controller of the RAID to backup all my clients using TimeMachine and then have the right controller mirror that on the fly (so that would be RAID 50). I was then hoping that I could swap out ALL the right controller drives to store them off-site each week.
Would that plan be possible do you think? OK to take out all drives from the right controller at the same time, leaving the left RAID5 running on its own until the new set is put into the right controller to rebuild the RAID50 again? Make sense? Possible?
    Thank you, Grant

However there just doesn’t appear to be any failsafe easy solution to backup the XServe RAID for offsite storage is there. Is is quite unfortunate and surprising and I would have thought there would have been a methodology worked out for this somewhere. But from what I am hearing, there isn’t.
Xserve RAID is a storage array box, and (somewhat confusingly) it's exceedingly uncommon to back up "just a storage box." I do know a few storage controllers that offer replication capabilities, but I'm extremely suspect that the tools work reliably. Storage controllers don't have all of the context on the processing that they need to perform reliable data replication; to ensure consistency.
It's common to perform remote replication via network and tools are available to do that. You almost certainly will end up with local customizations here, too.
The tools are specific to particular application storage involved; there's no Server Time Machine here, as you need use (for instance) mysqldump or you need MySQL replication for a MySQL database, and a different tool for another database. Or you need quiesce the databases.
Which leads various folks to punt on the process, to shut down down the server, and block-clone the disks involved. To quiesce the server. That too can likely be automated, with some scripting and a controlling host.
As for the remote storage (when not using a network), getting the data off-site then depends on what removable media is available. Ultrium tape has decent capacity and good physical reliability and speed, but tends to have poor support on Mac OS X Server, and Ultrium drives and loaders tend to be expensive. Removable disks do reasonably well here, and various options are available, but they're less physically reliable than tapes. For tens of gigabytes, flash media is a potential option, though it's not the speediest of storage.
Networking can be an option here for remote storage, depending on how small your delta (churn) and how good your compression is and how big your network pipe might be; your network pipe has to be big enough to manage your maximum available window.
If you're looking for turn-key, there are commercial products which claim to deal with this stuff. And unless they're using mysqldump or such for databases, I'm professionally skeptical at the integrity of the archives they create on an active server. (I've watched the storage and data archive folks claim to have solved this for thirty years now. They can mostly solve it, too, for some values of mostly.)
[Here is a MySQL mysqldump|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1336] procedure, which can serve to show how to do daily, weekly or monthly archives, and how to run mysqldump tool from bash.
(I am aware of one operating system that can mirror active disk data across a data link and across hosts and across storage controllers and can operate with fully distributed shared write, and that OS obviously and specifically targets high-uptime environments, but that OS environment is not cheap. And it's not Mac OS X Server. And even that environment can't correctly capture an active database for an offline archive; even there, you need to quiesce the database or use database-specific tools.)
It'd be feasible for somebody to create a (big, hairy) tool to catch all the usual suspects on a Mac OS X Server box. But then you have to maintain it across all of the slightly-weird installations, and you also have to deal with restorations. (I'd love to write a generic one of these; this would necessarily be a superset of Time Machine. This is a big and complex project, and one that would require extensive testing.)
Server boxes are not client boxes. Servers require real work and real thought and real configuration. And as production requirements increase, they also tend to require some knowledge of the shell and of scripting and writing (or acquiring) some site-management tools.

  • XServe RAID + UPS question

If my RAID is hooked up to a UPS will the RAID automatically shut down with a power failure or do I need additional software?

If my RAID is hooked up to a UPS will the RAID
automatically shut down with a power failure or do I
    need additional software?
There is a very good article on AFP548 on this topic:
    http://www.afp548.com/filemgmtdata/files/OSX_UPSguide.pdf
    hardware:
You will need simple signaling cable by APC. this connect the Xserve RAID serial port to the serial port on the Xserve. (or through a serial expander for multiple RAID connections)
    software:
you will need Powerchute for network (if you have a network management module on your UPS) by APC. It's used to configure the UPS.
I believe powerchute for personal edition does not have mac version. but i may be wrong.

  • Suggested methods for full backup of XServe RAID data

I know this is only peripherally related to the discussion topic, but since every other suggestion posted here is followed by the disclaimer that you should make a full backup of your data before proceeding with any major operations on your RAID arrays, I'd like to know what more experienced admins do in order to create a full backup for reasonably fast recovery in case of substantial data loss during maintenance/repair.
Our current "backup" availability is incremental optical disc archival (our data is mostly "write-once"), but this isn't entirely practical for recovery since it's over a terabyte of data. Since the connected server has a free hot-swappable SCSI drive bay as well as an interface for external SCSI devices, not to mention the fiber channel and ethernet interfaces, the options that I'd consider in order would be:
    1. A handful of 150-500 Gb SCSI hard drives, rotated out of the hot-swappable bay
    2. An external tape drive attached to the SCI interface (with appropriate tape size, maybe the LTO-2 with 200Gb native capacity?)
    3. Some other external SCSI storage device
    4. Larger optical disc archival (I hear there are technologies arriving in the near future)
    5. Network-based option; remote seems impractical due to sheer size, but perhaps local?
The idea is to make a full backup (long-term solutions are superior of course) of 1-2 Tb of data on the XServe RAID before attempting major surgery. Suggestions for common, accepted, tested, efficient methods for accomplishing this would be greatly appreciated. I apologize if this thread isn't on-topic enough for some of you.
    -Brian

    Brian,
Tape IMO is kinda yucky (to steal a term from your average 3 year old). It's fairly slow to back up to, it's very slow to restore, and it's actually not that reliable by itself (I worked with a large enterprise customer who said their backups were successful about 70% of the time (!!!)).
That said, tape has the advantage that you can offsite it and archive it very cheaply, and the media are fairly cheap, so you can make lots of backups, so if one fails, you probably can restore the data from another tape.
Disks are more expensive initially, but end up being pretty reliable, and you get a lot more flexibility (plus, they're fast).
An emerging "best of both worlds" backup strategy is what's called disk to disk to tape, where you typically back up to another large "disk," for example a second Xserve RAID. Data is then backed up from the second disk to tape, which is taken offsite... thus tape is used for what it's best at (offsite archival). Restore can be from disk in most cases, which is 10-20x faster than restoring from tape. People use software packages like Netvault's Bakbone or Atempo's Time Navigator, which can handle the whole process, and it works quite well. The backup disks (e.g. the RAID) can be onsite, or can be at a backup site a couple KM away, attached via optical (this is preferable, for DR reasons).
For cases where a second Xserve RAID is prohibitively expensive, cheaper (and slower) RAID 5 enclosures like Wiebetech's RAIDtech can provide a large (say, 1.6 TB) RAID 5 volume, accessible over FW800 or SATA (not sure if they have a SATA-based one yet).

If you have tried restarting a few times and it still doesn't show up I'm afraid you are gonna have to go back in and check the connections. I know they just slot into the carriage, but possibly it is not in tight. I can only suggest you open it up and check everything thoroughly. If after a thorough check, if it still does not mount you may want to take the hard drive back and swap it. Are you sure it was only a hard drive failure in the first place? I only ask this because WD hard drives have quite a solid reputation.

  • Show conn state and fix-ups

Can the show conn state command be used to monitor the connections for fix-up protocols?

Use the show port status command to display port status information.
    show port status [mod_num[/port_num]]
    Syntax Description
    mod_num
    (Optional) Number of the module.
    /port_num
(Optional) Number of the port on the module.
This example shows how to display port status information for all ports:
    Console> show port status
Port Name Status Vlan Level Duplex Speed Type
    1/1 connected 523 normal half 100 100BaseTX
    1/2 notconnect 1 normal half 100 100BaseTX
2/1 connected trunk normal half 400 Route Switch

    5/2 notconnect 1 normal half 100 FDDI

  • Easiest solution for adding Fibre Channel Tape Backup to Xserve RAID setup

I'm interested in getting a Fibre Channel LTO-3 tape library such as the Exabyte 221L for my Xserve RAID/Xserve G5 setup. I realize there are SCSI LTO-3 solutions that are less expensive than FC, but I'd prefer not to have to add a SCSI card to my Xserve, mainly because I'd have to pull the video card and run the server headless (horrors!). However, I understand that I must get a Fibre Channel switch to allow the LTO library, the Xserve, and the Xserve RAID to communicate... you can't just daisy chain FC devices. The least expensive switch I can find is the new QLogtic SANbox 3050 for about $1800. For my situation, in which these will be the only FC devices I'll probably ever use, does this switch sound appropriate? The specs on the switch can be found here: http://www.qlogic.com/products/sanbox/sanbox_3050.asp.
    Xserve RAID & Xserve G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

For simple environments like yours, it's trivially easy. You must plug everything in, and you're good to go... as simple as a network switch.
Now if you start adding multiple hosts (i.e. plug in a second Xserve or G5), you need to be careful, because in the default configuration everything is "wide open," so every device can see every storage LUN. This would actually be problematic, as systems could (actually, would) corrupt each other's storage. When you get to this point, you'll need to look at either zoning the ports on the switch, or using LUN masking on the Xserve RAID to allocate specific pieces of storage to specific hosts.
But for now, just get the switch, plug everything in, and you're off.
BTW if you mark "answered" for me, versus for the thread overall, it helps me out a bit in this forum ranking system, whatever it is.
    Cheers.

RAID Admin log says :"4000 1 Wed Apr 08 09:37:59 EDT 2009 Disk 2 Failed To Respond. Retrying. RETRY COUNT:0 LBA:0x1C700"
Under the RAID tab, Disk utility says: "Mirrored RAID Set: Degraded" and "Disc2s3: FAILED"
All LED's are solid green across the front of the ADMs.
Since all my drives are reporting OK, could this be a problem with the Fiber Channel interfaces?
Should I just backup (again), shut down and rebuild the mirror using Disk Utility?

    Hi Kappy<
I am trying to migrate user data from a RAID - 1 slice from my old PowerMac G4 running OS X 10.4.11 to my new MacBook Pro running OS X 10.5.4 by reading a mirror RAID slice from my old Mac that is mounted in an external drive enclosure and connected by FireWire.
The problem is that the new Mac cannot read the old Mac disk, it never shows up on the desktop, or comes up as available when trying to use Migration Assistant. Then, if I go into Disk Utility, the external RAID slice shows up briefly with a locked yellow padlock beside it, then I suddenly get the window shade of death, and have to hold down the power button to reset/restart my MacBook.
Why can my new computer not read my old computers disk, and how can I change permissions, or make the old drive readable by the new mac.
Regrettably I am away from the original Desktop, and cannot load the old drive back into it, connect the two machines and migrate that way. My only option for reaching my necessary data is to retrieve it off the drive I have with me.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
