Xserve RAID - to slow during video capture

I have Xserve RAID with 14 drives in 2 stripes ( 2x7 drives ) in RAID5. I can see in my system two "drives" called RAID1 & RAID2 - each 2.18TB.
When I`m using BlackMagic Disk Speed test utility I have only 150MB/s read and 100MB/s write which is to slow for 1080i HD.
What is wrong ? What should I do to get better performance ?
I`m new in Xserve so maybe somebody could explaine me "step by step" what to do.
I read a little about RAID50 but I have no idea how to create it.
Regards.

Those speeds are fast enough for HD capture.
Anyway, to ensure you're getting full speed, make sure:
1) You have the 1.5 firmware on the RAID
2) Enable controller write cache is checked (enabled)
3) Use drive cache is checked (enabled)
4) Allow host cache flushing is DISABLED (unchecked)
5) Use steady streaming mode is DISABLED (unchecke)
For capture, leaving the settings at 8 stripes as prefetch is probably best. If you are going to be doing extensive playback of uncompressed HD, you may want to consider setting the prefetch at 128 stripes.

if your camera settings is on automatic then the flash will be on while recording. that is how mine is set and it stays on.

  • Color shift during video capture (moved from Nseri...

I have noticed that the video camera in my n79 is very sensitive to changes in light.  Often I get a major color shift during a video capture seemingly for no reason, especially when shooting outside.  Is this a defect or should I use a particular setting for video? Current settings are:
    quality: High(TV);
    scene mode:Auto;
    video light: off(shooting video outside during day);
    white balance: Automatic (this MIGHT be the culprit?);
    Color tone:Normal.
Two stills from the same video are attached; the second, a few seconds later, is unnaturally vivid (almost day-glo!).
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Wow, what a quick reply!
Delivery was going to be Quicktime HD and probably downconvering to SD MPEG2 for a DVD. I was just going to edit in HDV, since I'm not doing anything fancy, just to try it out as a workflow option (and previews for the client). The first couple of projects I've started on my Macbook Pro though have had this hue shift (I can post an example on-line if need be by filming my monitor...) It's not inherent in the actual captured QT file, just when being played back in FCP. When I export out of FCP the QT file looks great as well. I've never had this problem on my G5 tower with HDV from the same camera or captured the same way. I'm worried that it's the univeral copy of FCP or even worse, my Macbook!
    Make sense?
    Thanks

  • Lost segments during video capture

I know I've got enough horsepower to do the job, but every time I attempt video capture either from the S-video input (Hi8 camcorder)or via Firewire (DV camcorder)I get periodic breaks in the captured data. I'm not losing frames per se, I lose 2-3 second segments of the video stream every 9 to 30 seconds with no repeatable pattern that I can see.
I've tried most of the tips found on various sites, ie. eliminating background tasks and registry fiddling with only some improvement.
    I've tried the following software:
    Intervideo Winproducer
    Intervideo Wincinema
    Sonic MyDVD
    Arcsoft Showbiz
    Any help, ideas welcome.
BTW, thanks to the posters here. I've found solutions to a number of problems and some good ideas in the few days I've been lurking here.

On one of my older systems, I've experienced same problem. It was solved by disabling USB in BIOS (I don't have much explanation for this, maybe a strange driver).
On the other hand, try iuVCR (http://www.iulabs.com they could pay me for advertising  :D ), it's the only application I've used, able to capture in divx on the fly without loosing frames (of course it depends on cpu frequency, I have athlon 1ghz, capturing 352x288, but on 2.4ghz 640x480 is ok)

  • Constant event error being logged during video capture

I recently upgraded my version of Premiere Pro to version CS4.  When I now perform a video capture from my DV Device, I get the following error logged in the event window: "file is busy, and couldn't be updated".  Until the first logging, there is no RED X in the bottom right corner.  Upon the first log, the RED X appears in the bottom right corner.
As far as I can tell, the event error occurs immediately after a scene download has been completed and the next scene is initiated.
The camera I am using is a MiniDV camera (not HD) and it is not listed in the device table within Premiere (Panasonic PV-GS500).  I have Premiere's device set to Standard Panasonic and have also tried each of the Alternatives (1,2,3,4 and 5).
Can anyone please help me understand what this error/event means as Adobe is somewhat prehistoric when it comes to providing definitions.

    Several possible causes:
    1. You are not running as administrator or with administrative rights.
    2. You use Win7 and your firewire driver is not the 'Legacy' one. See Adobe Forums: Can not capture under Win7
    3. Background processes are getting in the way.
    Possible solution:
Try Scenalyzer Live for capturing SD material. Better, more reliable and with more features than CS4.

  • IMovie Importing cuts off during video capture

    Hi!
I am in the process of importing a video footage from my mini dv cam tape into iMovie. It seems that iMovie cuts off the video capture after 16 minutes into the duration. I have a 60-minute footage that needs to be captured for iMovie.
Is there a time limit for video captures within iMovie?
Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

  • Premiere Pro won't minimise properly during video capture

If anybody could help me with this it would be much appreciated:
I haven't encountered this problem this before but I have Premiere Pro from the CS3 Master Suite running and the capture window is open, capturing video from a deck. When I minimise Premiere I can normally carry on with other work in Microsoft Excel or other similar software. This only lasts for a few moments before the tab for Premiere on the Start Bar starts flashing and deselects whichever program I am working on so that any keystrokes or keyboard shortcuts I use are applied to Premiere and are halting or otherwise affecting the capture process. I need to know if there are any options in Premiere to prevent it from "re-activating" whilst minimised as it is halting the progress of my work, it is flashing away at me now like an insidious little beacon of hate........I must stop it........

If you are capturing SD, try Scenalyzer Live.  I have to use it because Premiere does not capture audio correctly from my camera (one of the few that Sony used an odd audio process on).  Scenalyzer captures fine in the background.  The trial is free.  Check a few files to be sure it is working for you; I have an older system (P4), and no problems with captures.

  • Red light during video capture on N95

CAn I change the orange light lifght to white light at least?during shootng video with N95??

    Very cool there Bhagiratha!
The green stuff looks like a copper oxide to me, perhaps the leftover from thermal paste?
The thermal paste is supposed to make up for the slight unevenness and/or give a better heat transfer if I remember correctly.
Since it's all around the outside edges "squeezed out" that's my assumption.
(don't try this at home folks it will void your warranty and can make you very unhappy if things go bad)

  • Capturing Video To Xserve Raid problems

I recently purchased an Xserve raid (1.75TB with 512mb cache on each controller), set it up for Raid 5. I also have an Apple Fibre Card on Slot 4 (the fasted PCI-X slot on my dual 2.0 G5. Much to my surprise when capturing DV video, not HD or DVCPRO, simply DV video via FireWire 400 to the Xserve Raid it can't keep up and drops frames! When I caputure DV video via FireWire 400 to my internal 150gb SATA drive all is well.
I do have journaling turned on for the Raid, but that can't be the problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks

    Hi there,
I’ve been reading numerous posts by you on the Apple Discussions pages and was wondering if you could help me.
I work for a small video company with 1 G5 Quad, 4 Dual G5’s and a G5 Imac. We have always worked across a gigabit network, sharing media and projects from each other’s internal and external drives without any problems. However, it was very hard to keep track of what everyone was doing and it was often hard to find specific files.
Therefore, we decided that it would be a good idea to centralise all of our storage, so we invested in an Apple Xserve Raid, which we connected to one of the dual processor G5’s (which we installed 10.4 server software on) via fibre channel. We figured that we would all be able to access the raid (just like we access each others internal and external drives) and read the media across the network. However, this has not gone to plan!
I followed the instructions about how to initialise and setup the raid and striped one bank of 7 as Raid 0 (set as our Projects drive) and the other bank as Raid 5 (set as our capture scratch). It does work ok for the most part. The G5 that hosts it works perfectly and most of the time one or maybe two of the other G5’s work well, but on the whole we are dropping a lot of frames and images are freezing frequently.
My understanding is that all 6 of our edit suites should be able to read DV across the gigabit network and as I have said, this has been the case before we got the raid – which leads me to think there is something, not right with the Raid. I could be here all day if I were to explain all the network settings on each computer, as well as what settings the Raid is set to – and to be honest I wouldn’t even know where to look!
I don’t know if I made this clear, but we capture locally and move the footage across – the project files and render files are also saved on the raid! We are not trying to work from the same project files, just the same media – but not all the time!
I really need to understand why we are having so much trouble and any help would be greatly appreciated?
    Kind Regards

  • Are long video clips harder on Xserve Raid

I am considering capturing entire 30 min. tapes instead of shorter clips. Does length of captured video clips make any difference on how hard an xserve raid needs to work?

No. None whatsoever. You can capture to an Xserve RAID as fast as it will write until it gets about 80-85% full, and then it will start to slow because of physics (track density on the inside of the spindles is less than on the outside).

  • HD Capture into Xserve raid dropped frames

You may check your cache settings on Xserve RAID via RAID Admin tool.
Here is the settings I believe should work for most video captuer cases.

  • Trouble capturing to xserve raid

    Hey,
I'm having serious issues capturing from my Dual 2 Ghz G5 with 3.25gb RAM (running os 10.3.9) to my apple xserve raid.
My raid is striped as raid0 and is connected by fibre channel to another G5 running os 10.4 server software. Capturing from this G5 works perfectly, but when I try and capture from my other G5, which is connected to the G5 with server software via a gigabit ethernet cable, I encounter numerous dropped frames.
I have tried everything I can think of to get this working, but to no avail.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Am I wrong in thinking that I can capture DV to an xserve raid across a gigabit ethernet? If so, what would I need to do to solve the problem?
Sorry if I've been abit vague or if I've not supplied as much info as needed. Please let me know if there is anything else I need to add!!
Thanks in advance for any help given.
    Cheers
    Adam

Thanks for your post - I know its been a while responding, but it seems to be one thing after an other at the moment!
Right, for a time, your suggestion worked! We started capturing to our local drives, then transferring the media across. Render files and project files were also saved on the raid. Generally our workflow was very good - but not perfect!
Then I realised that one of the macs that is connected to the network isn't gigabit, which, from my understanding, means that all the other macs would be limited to 110mbs instead of 100 - Do you know if I am correct with this assumption?
Anyway, it hasn't caused us major issues and because of how busy we've been we haven't really had a chance to test the theory and/or reslove it.
Anyway, my boss then kindly went out and bought me a G5 Quad, which was also added to the network and then we upgraded to FCP5 on every computer - now we are having no end of trouble working across the network. When we capture locally, move it across and then play it back the footage is constantly freezing, especially on the Quad!
People keep telling me that you can't use dv across a gigabit network, but surely this can't be the case.
There must be something I'm doing wrong? if it the 10mbs issue I mentioned, or do I simply need to go spend alot of money upgrading every mac to fibre channel? Even if I did this, would it definately solve all our problems?
    Pleae, please, please help!!!

  • Super Slow Performance with Xserve RAID / Promise Fibre

    Hey guys,
I am experiencing a strange thing on both 10.5.8 and 10.7.5 servers (yes these are in the process of being retired). They are sharing out either an Xserve RAID or Promise Vtrak with OS X Server.
We have the fibre channel card and the storage attaches to there and they appear mounted on the desktop.
The problem we are having is that whenever OS X's file sharing is enabled these volumes run incredibly slow! I did a clean install of OS X 10.7.5 on an entirely different machine and it was still bad. All of my tests show that when you turn off file sharing, both AFP and SMB, the performance goes back to normal -- so what can we do here??? These are file servers, so that's pretty much the only thing that needs to work.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

Slow/poor RAID performance can be down to a number of things. Some of which are easier to check than others.
Some easy things to check are:
How much data is stored on the RAIDs?
Performance really drops off alarmingly once the RAID gets to 85% full. For a 1TB RAID this means you need to keep at least 250GB of free disk space at all times otherwise you will get the poor performance you're seeing. Once it gets to 86/87/88% full performance can drop alarmingly. Yes those few percent points can make a big difference.
How is the data stored on the RAIDs?
Having thousands and thousands of single files stored loosely on the RAID or within one single folder is not a good idea. The Finder can be and is fairly inefficient at drawing the icons for those files that are presented to network users accessing the share point(s). This can/and is perceived as very slow performance as you're viewing the files over a network connection. One way to overcome this 'feature' is to organise the data into logical folders/sub-folders and/or shares.
Are there problems with the file/directory structure of the RAIDs themselves?
Use DiskUtility (or better still DiskWarrior) to repair any issues (generally built up over a period of time) with the storage disks you have. You can't repair permissions using DiskUtility or anything else on a non-OS bearing drive. Don't forget to do this also for your System Drive (which can have its permissions repaired) as well. This will mean the server being off-line for a time whilst the system (OS) drive is being repaired. Before doing this step I would make sure you have a current and effective backup of your System/Server OS as well as all data stored on the RAIDs themselves. Hopefully you should be doing this for your data already?
To understand Disk Utility's repair permissions feature please read Apple's support document here:
About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature - Apple Support

  • How can I fix slow AFP writes to our Xserve RAID?

    Hi,
This problem has been posted before but I couldn't find a solution. We have a Intel Xserve connected via fibre channel to a 14 disk 10.5 TB Xserve RAID. It's setup as two RAID5 volumes soft raided into one volumes (RAID 50).
There are multiple AFP shares on the RAID being served by the Xserve. The problem is that writes over AFP randomly go really slowly. Sampling using fs_usage shows a load of RdMeta operations from the AppleFilerServer process. I think it's the same issue that was posted here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8153758#8153758
We've tried everything mentioned in that post - with no success. Has anyone managed to solve this problem? Many thanks,
    Jamie

It might be an HFS+ filesystem but because I'm seeing this on a simple striped RAID in a PowerMac. I was writing a script to look for system files starting with 32 zero bytes:
    find /System/Library/ -type f -exec echo -n "{}:" \; -exec xxd -l 32 -c 64 -p {} \; | grep ':0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000' | cut -f 1 -d':'
Sometimes it appeared to halt for a long time and fs_usage showed RdMeta or WrMeta blasting along at ~100MB/s. After a few more runs it no longer has this problem. I wonder if there's a tuning bug in HFS hot file management or defragmentation.

I just found out that iPhone disables making Videos when I'm on a call.
This really ***** - It lets me taking the photos, but no video option.
It can't be the processing power needed - as this is 3Gs and has lots of power under the hood
I know Video captures Audio as well in the movie - so what - it should still be able to make a video with the voice capture thru the Mic.
This is totally stupid of Apple. Video is a very useful feature and one of the reasons I paid $560 to upgrade and a bad implementation.
