Xserver 3,1 and USB 3.0

I have a XServe 3,1 running OS X 10.7.5. I have connected USB 2.0 and FW800 drives to this machine with no issues. As of late, I have been using USB 3.0 external drives though. When I connect them the Xserve kernel panics and is unusable again until I unplug the drive. I have tried this with two different branded drives and have attached both of the reports from the kernel panic. What is interesting though is that I have other USB 3.0 drives that have connected with no issue. The USB 3.0 drives that I have connected and caused a kernel panic work fine on all other machines. Regardless, the following are the Crash Reports after the kernel panic. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Quick summary:
It fails on all ports
It fails on multiple xServes
It fails on 10.7.5 and 10.8.5 both fully patched and up to date.
It works on iMac 10.7.5 fully patched. Appears to be xServes only that are affected.
It will kernel panic the OS on boot, seconds in.
It does not affect the early boot screen.
It is possible to boot from the drive using a 10.7 installer image.
It works with 10.6.8
It is most likely USB kexts that are the problem. It may work with older versions of 10.7/10.8. It might be possible to copy kexts from older to newer versions and get it working.
I recommend everyone affected to log fault with Apple, along with the details of the drives. It looks to be multiple model drives and multiple drive vendors.

Bluetooth and USB ports aren't working, so am unable to use Imac past turning it on. There's no way to connect mouse or keyboard, it started right after a software update for Maverick (OS X bash Update 1.0 – OS X Mavericks), bluetooth symbol not showing in the task bar at all.

    Hi SBrwn,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
The symptom you're describing can be frustrating to troubleshoot as our options are limited. I do suggest resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) if you have not already. This step can help you regain use of USB and Bluetooth.
Follow these steps to reset the SMC on your iMac:
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
Shut down the computer. [by holding down the power button]
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
You can find these steps and more information at this link:

    All the best,

My iPhone 4S will charge on a laptop but not from a wall plug. I have tried different boxes and different USB cords from the wall but none work. These boxes and USB cords work for other family members with iPhones and a USB cord that works from the laptop won't work from 3 or 4 different wall boxes that work for others. I'm stumped :/

Update: It seems as though the phone will charge if I plug it in and then turn it off.  It will not charge while the phone is on.  Also iTunes will not recognize it, so I can't sync or anything.  I read somewhere that it could be a fuse somewhere?? Or maybe the dock connector. Where is the best place to get this repaired?

  • [SOLVED] xserver 1.5 and KDE 4 keymaps - strange behavior

I apologize if this has already been addressed, but I have read every thread about this I can find, and the wiki page, and I can't find a solution.
I use a standard US keyboard (it's a laptop), but with the Dvorak keymap.  Most things work fine, except for any Ctrl-Alt combinations.  For example, ctrl-alt-left is detected as D.   ctrl-alt-right is C,  ctrl-alt-up is A, and ctrl-alt-down is B.  These are my shortcuts for switching desktops, so I use them constantly.  The Windows key works perfectly, as do ctrl-shift sequences.
There's no problem in the VTs, and in xev, all the keys are detected normally.  I've also discovered that I can temporarily fix the problem by going into system settings, unsetting a shortcut, than resetting it, but this only lasts for that one session.  The next time I start KDE, the problem returns.
I have removed my input devices from xorg.conf after upgrading to xserver 1.5, and in KDE system settings I've set it to Evdev-managed keyboard, with the us map and dvorak variant.  My /etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-keymap.fdi is as follows:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> <!-- -*- SGML -*- -->
    <deviceinfo version="0.2">
    <device>
    <match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.keymap">

    <match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.keys">

I don't know, however, whether it is a bug in KDE (I am using KDEmod 3.5.10) or in xkeyboard-config package which provides setxkbmap and its config files - in particular /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/inet which contains definitions for keyboard models.
I don't think this is a bug in KDE, as this fixed a problem I was having with xmodmap on Openbox.
If I used xmodmap to remap my Caps Lock key to Ctrl in my openbox startup scripts, odd things happen to my keymap (Super key stops working, left arrow key stops repeating, etc).  Running setxkbmap before xmodmap seems to fix everything.
    Thanks!

  • Airport Extreme - problem with usb printer and usb disk

I have Airport extreme with firmware 7.1. I try connect usb disk and usb printer with usb-hub to airport. I can't get disk or printer working. Also try connect only disk or printer without usb-hub to airport getting same problem. How I get disk and printer working with wireless network (windows pc computers)?
    1)
    My printer is HP PSC 1210 all-in-one ( http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=90764&lc=fi&cc=fi&dlc=fi&lang =fi&cc=fi&y=0&x=0 )
    - printer seems working fine after installing bonjour printer installing wizard.
    - I get error (in windows) when I try print document from word. Error only says "error printing" in status value.
    - In airport utility all seems ok. Airport see usb printer "Hewlett-Packard psc 1200 series"
    - printer protocol is RAW and driver manufacture HP (also try with microsoft driver)
    2)
USB disk is Targa Databox II 250
    - Airport utility says "Disk needs repair. Errors were found with a disk connected to your airport base station. please connect the usb disk to your mac or pc and use disk utility or another disk application to repair the disk"
    - I have connected Targa usb disk to windows pc and run scandisk and defreg. No errors found in windows. Result..no help for airport

I have a similar problem to your second issue. Tried connecting a Netdisk to the USB port of the Airport Extreme and it also said there was a problem with the disk. Have performed a low level format on the disk and Airport Extreme still complained the disk had a problem.
After unplugging the disk, my route decided to stop allowing wireless connections even after rebooting. Ended up having to hard reset the Airport Extreme and reconfigure it with my old settings to work again.
FWIW, the first Airport Extreme I purchased today only worked on 802.11a and steadfastly refused to work on b/g so had to get a replacement. I suspect Apple's quality control is not quite as good as it used to be.

  • A question about grub and USB

    Hi All
I have a quick question about grub and USB that I can't quite find the answer to by searching.   Most of the FAQs discuss booting a full linux dristribution from USB. My situation is this.  I am getting a new computer with two drives, the second will be arch and the first will be Vista (for my wife).  I want the computer to boot the same way that my wife's machine boots at work so I don't want to install grub on the MBR.  So, is there a way to have all of the grub config files and kernels installed on the second drive and simply install to grub boot loader to the MBR of a USB stick?  My goal would be to simply plug the USB stick into the new PC and boot arch from the second drive.
    Thanks
    Kev

    i cant say for hp's
havent worked on any in a while
recent machines have been coupleof dell's , vaio & emachine
which dells do offer it at least the ones i tried , my laptop does(dell)
all home pc's are built by me which do offer to boot individual drives
what hp you getting it may tell in specs
are both discs sata? if so it might not offer this option with 2 drives of same interface
check your power supply alot of these preconfigured machines put cheap under reated power supplies in there
    & will burn your motherboard i just replaced PS(250 watt) & mobo(845gvsr) in an emachines <cheap stuff<
i hope you researched the pc before buying ie : mobo, power supply are the biggest concerns
i find it much more benificial to build my own machine gives me peace at mind. the cost is sometimes more in $ but not always , your biggest expense is time researching hardware
if you live in usa the best places to start looking are bensbargains.net & pricewatch.com
i am not affiliated with either & niether sell the hardware they are just advertisers a place to buy
for costomized machines that i would trust is unitedmicro.com theyll asemble & test before shipping
i have gotten 2 machines so far from them with NO PROBLEMS with hardware (knock knock)
you may want to consider this in your next venture for pc

  • Windows 8.1 64 bit and USB 3.0 connection Error

What a Nightmare to me after I have purchased my Probook 470 G2 with window 8.1 64bit and USB 3.0.  after my setup for my new laptop, there are 2 issues i am facing now:
    1. my USB 3.0 external drive can work properly with my old window 7 laptop with USB 3.0 input. However,  my USB 3.0 exernal drive can not function proplery when i try to plug in to my new laptop with window 8.1 64bit. it show me that it sometimes disconnect, sometimes connect frequently and I can not remove the drive safely
    2. Once the laptop set up, there is 3 partition from HP, which is windows (c, recovery (D and HP tools (E. as i want to allocate more space fo save my old photo, HP technician has taught me to compress and release some space(around 150GB) from my C: . I can use the new drive successfully. However it seems i can not have window update manually so I am concerned if this is the mian point to create this issue.
Any HP technicians can help here?
    This question was solved.

No. There is no need to go to a command line and there aren't any DOS commands that will help.
You should consider using Windows system restore to return your notebook's operating system to a date before this issue began. Choose a restore point dated before the problem surfaced.Use the search charm and type in restore. Choose create a restore point. The System Properties window will appear. Click on System Restore as seen in the following image.
Make certain the show me more restore points option has a checkmark in the box. Choose the restore point that you want and then click on next. This is safe and reversible.

  • Bitlocker without TPM and USB

    Hello Team,
I am working for a company which has  Windows Server 2012 R2 domain server and mixture of Windows 7 and Windows 8 client computers.
The problem is, I need to configure bit-locker in all client machine, but some machine doesn't have TPM. I found a way to configure bit-locker without TPM, but it requires USB(key within it) at every startup.
So I want to configure Bit-locker in all client machine without TPM and USB, but with PIN. And all bit-locker recovery keys should be backed up to Active directory.
Please let me know the steps to configure this rather than HTTP links.
    Thanks in Advance.
Have a great day ahead and make a great day for me.

    Hi.
Having a PIN is only possible in combination with a TPM, but having a password alone is possible since windows 8.

  • Macs and USB Devices Not Getting Along

I am posting this incase I'm not the only one.
I have noticed this issue with my Intel iMac as well as my PPC iMac
Both are running the latest versions of OSX 10.4.9
This is regarding USB connectivity and the effect connected devices have on the system.
    USB Setup
    1 7 Port usb hub
1 Palm Dock Connected via hub
1 iPod Dock Connected to 2nd USB Port on iMac
1 ScanSnap connected via hub - POWER OFF
    Bluetooth Apple Mouse & Keyboard
1 TomTom 910 connected via hub - Connected to dock but power is off.
1 Canon IP90 Connects via Bluetooth - POWER OFF
    This is what happens.
If one of the following usb devices is connected, boot times can be extended with the system "pausing" at the Gray screen before Gray Apple Logo appears.
    iPod
    Palm TX
Once the OS boots Missing Sync's Menu Bar status application will not load, will have to manual load app.
If I disconnect these devices and reboot boot time is normal with no "pause" and missing sync loads normally.
Also i Have noticed my Apple keyboard will take longer to pair during boot with or without these devices connected.
iMac will not power down as scheduled with these usb devices connected if the system falls asleep with them connected.
Normally the iMac will wake itself up at 11pm to shut down. If my iPod or Palm is connected it will not. It will only shut down via schedule if it is awake when scheduled time is reached.
    iMac G5 2 Ghz 1.5 Ram 400 Gig HD & iBook G4 1.33 12   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

So just an updated to my original post. I have been working with tech support for Missing Sync. There is a known issue with a menu bar application that comes with their software. It seems when more than 1 or 2 usb devices are connected this menu bar app doesn't load correctly... or at all.
According to them.. one of their techs actually spoke with a Apple Engineer at WWDC this week regarding the issue. According to this Apple Engineer there is a known issue with OS X and USB handling. Apparently the OS can "freak out" if certain devices are connected during boot.
No other specifics where given, and who knows if this is Missing Syncs attempt at shelling off responsibility to Apple. However, I am inclined to believe it as I have noticed that my iMac Intel or PowerPC will take a significantly longer time booting if my iPod or Palm Pilot is docked during boot. I've also noticed I can't reset my PRAM when these devices are connected.
I hope apply addresses these issues, seems kinda crazy its gotten this far being that USB devices are the primary method for expanding your Mac's abilities.

  • My iphone external hard drive keeps disconnecting so it tells me I disconnected improperly. I have changed electric cord directly to outlet and usb also direct, and it still happens.

I store ALL my photos (400 events) on an external 1T hard drive. The hard drive keeps disconnecting so it get a msg telling me I disconnected improperly basically which is a serious no no. I then have to re-start. I have tried connecting directly to the wall outlet, to a super duper surge protector and also have connected the usb (was on a usb port) directly to the computer. But it continues to happen a total nusance. What do I do?

I would first contact  Seagate's tech support for a possible solution. If that doesn't prove successful then I would try a different product or consider building your own.
    Basic Backup
Get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    Silver Keeper
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.
