Xserver, os X Server and software licensing

I work on a comunication agency, in the design dept.
The agency is preparing a plan to update the servers and network structure. My boss ask me to make part of the team that is identifiyng the needs in these area.
The design dept. uses Macs (4). All the rest of the agency uses Pc's.
One of the things that I've purposed is a Apple Xserver for the design dept., and the IT administrator told to the team that 2 year ago installed a Xserver and he told us that is possible to install all the software we use in the server (photoshop, indesign, etc...) and that the xserver makes the distribution of the licenses.
Ex.: We have 2 licenses of Indesign CS 2 installed on 2 different computers. If one of us need to use Indesign and we dont have it installed in the computer we are using at the moment, we have to swap arround users, close the works and reorganize things... not good!
I searched for that feacture in Apple website and didnt find.
So is that true? Is it possible?

Adobe does not offer floating licenses for business, only education clients, AFAIK.
Mac OS X server does not have a license server built in, but Sassafas KeyServer is an app, that I've used in education settings for this very purpose.
You may be able to netboot your Macs and use your software in this way, but it might not be worth the trouble.
You can use Portable Home Directories in OSX Server to make moving from one machine to another easier, but managing software that locks or activates, based on a particluar machine's hardware would be difficult.

Maybe this can help someone else... I simply had to properly uninstall CS3 and reinstall it again after that. I think that sorted it! I also remember having a similar issue with Macs at work a couple of years back. Not sure whether the same applies to CS5/CS6. ITunes error pop up box and software license agreement - can't launch iTunes

Cannot get iTunes to launch. Pop up box with Display Setting error and a iTunes software license agreement I cannot accept or decline. Anyone seen anything like this?

Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from Microsoft:

Now run the utility ("Start > All programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries, and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC, and try installing iTunes again. Does the install go through this time?

MS SQL Server Database software license details

Hi,
I have three queries regarding buying license from sap for MS SQL server software which will be used for SAP Businees suite application.
If we buy database license directly from Microsoft,
1. Will there be any issue in getting support from sap for database related issues during installation and post go live ?
2. Do we have access to download the database software CD provided by SAP or do we have to get it from Microsoft ?
3. Is there any difference in the database software provided by Microsoft and by SAP?
Please update me as soon as possible.

No.

If you license from Microsoft you will need to get the media from Microsoft.

No difference but SAP provides a script (sql4sap.vbs) that does necessary setups automatically and installs all patches automatically. You will need to do that then manually.

Need suggestions in upgrading server and software

We are about to upgrade our database to 10g from 8.0.6 on windows 2003 server. we have around 85GB of data in healthcare environment. I would like to know
1) If linux/windows is the best option for our server.
2) Will it be possible to directly upgrade from 8.0.6 to 10g.
3) Are there any particular versions of linux that support 10g ?
4) Will there be any problem installing database on 64 bit machine.

1. If DBA is confident / easy in linux then OEL 5.5 is the best which can be download from edelivery.oracle.com. If he/she is confident in windows; then any server edition is good.

You can'nt directly upgrade from 8.0.6 to 10.2.0.1, you have to apply 8.1.7.4 patch then it will upgrade to 10.2.0.1. Here you have following options too :
(a) Simple export the db and import to 10g.
(b) You can have dblinks in 10g by which you can create tables/MVs etc. something like :

3.Please check and download respective (32 bit or 64 bit machines) zips from :

4.No problem, if you first read the installation manual, follow the steps as mentioned in docs; otherwise come to forum, mention what you have done, what exact error your getting; i am sure you will get answer.

Windows Storage server 2012 Standard Licenseing

We have purchased 2 licenses of Windows Storage Server 2012 standard Edition for production. These 2 servers will be configured in cluster in production. Now we have to install one more server in failover in case the production servers goes down. My question

yes, you need to purchase th ellicense for the third Server while Windows Server storage is licensed per instance(active or passive).
on th emicrosoft MSLT for Windows Server storage 2012 R2 Standard we hav the following info:
License Model: The software is licensed based on:
the number of instances of server software that you run; and
the number of processors in the physical hardware
Assignment of the License to the Server:
The software license is permanently assigned to the server with which you acquired the software. That server is the
licensed server for that particular license. A hardware partition or blade is considered to be a separate server. You may not assign the same license to more than one server.

Control Panel won't open/Software License Service fails to run

I'm not sure what happened, I had left my computer on sleep for about 4 hours, I came back and I was getting these UAC messages even when I was opening elevated mode for task manager. Soon I realized my control panel won't open. After some googling, the problem was apparently linked to a service called Software License Service and it was either caused by virus(but I have avast..) or files that somehow got corrupted. I had: updated my system using Thinkvantage system update + did a system backup+ ran memtest86+ + turned off AMT + turned off Intel onscreen display. That's all I did before this happened.The error code I get when I try to start control panel through cmd is Error 34 (don't know what this means). And Software license service won't start.
*control panel opens fine in safe mode
*ran sfc, there were problems that 'couldn't be repaired'
1. Is there any way to fix this, ie is there a hotfix available or something I can just download and install?
2.Any idea what might have possibly caused this?
3. I did a quick restore using the backup I did and the problem was still not fixed. Will a full restore help or will I have to resort to factoy restore?

Hi I had to recover my SCCM media server from SQL and now having trouble to install Windows Update. When I deploy Windows Update, I can see status is "UKNOWEN".
I feel like something to do with WSUS/SQL/SCCM media server syncing issue.. But I can't point out that trouble setting to fix it. I have checked and make sure, there is no proxy setting in IE and SUP.
In the wsyscmgr.log is saying it is having syncing issue.

1. Unselect all Classisfications in SUP
2. Run wsusutil reset
3. Run another sync

Software licensing service won't start after sql server upgrade

having issues with windows server 2008 sp2 64 bit OS where the software license service do not start. and see the server as not genuine. when i run net start slsvc, I got a system error has occurred. system error 34 has occurred. the wrong diskette
is in the drive. insert *** (volume Serial Number: ***) into drive ***.
I try chkdsk and sfc/scannow. nothing seems to work.

Please try the steps below to resolve the issue:
1.net stop slsvc (select yes) in my case it was already stopped.
2.in command prompt type:
3.cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
4.rename the tokens.dat file: ren tokens.dat tokens.old
5.still in the command prompt type cd %windir%\system32
6.type net start slsvc
7.type cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (this may take a long time)
8.Then reboot the machine twice !!!
9.slmgr.vbs –ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX (assuming you have a MAK key, not a KMS key)
10.To activate your OS, just type: slmgr.vbs –ato

Server license and capacity license??

can anyone tell me where to get capacity license??? I had just registered an account in the VMware website,then I downloaded the stagemanager software and obtained a evaluation license.but when I installed and configured stagemanager, I found that it needed two license--server license and capacity license, I only have such a evaluation license, what can I do？

I have setup SCCM 2012 Sp1 on Server 2012 with WSUS using the internal database. When I sync updates in SCCM, I get the following error on some of the updates. I have run the sync 3 times over a day with the same updates failing

Not all of the updates are showing

I have seen this several times and it's often just a timing issue with downloading the EULA's that will go away after a few days or can be caused by a proxy server not allowing the download. Do you have a proxy?

Windows Server 2012 Standard License and VMs

Hi,
With one Window server 2012 Standard activated license, I will get 2 VMs. So is there a limit with Windows Server 2012 standard license I can stack and the the number of VMs I can create on one server or across servers (virtual environment). Consider that
all Windows server 2012 standard licenses are activated. If there is no limit on VM creation by add Standard license then why did Microsoft come with Data center licenses with unlimited VMs.
How does the standard license work on Vmware environment. Is there a limit on the number for VMs that we can create.

If i had one server 2012 standard with its key, i could run it as a vm but not as a virtual host without having the license right?
a single WS2012STD license, allows you to run a server machine (hardware), if that hardware has no more than 2 processors. In this case, you can run 2 VMs, each VM is running WS2012STD. You can also run WS2012STD as the host hypervisor via Hyper-V.
So, that's really 3 OS installations, on the same 2proc machine. The limitation is that the host hypervisor OS is only permitted to do Hyper-V stuff, it's not permitted to use that OS for anything other than hypervisor functions.
If you implement in this way, you would only have purchased a single license for WS2012STD, so you would only have a single key, so you would use that key for the 3 OS installations.
If i bought the single server 2012 standard license, i'd be able to install it as a Host and activate with the key and it'd give me rights to run 2vms on it and for those vms i would have to have 2 keys to activate after installing server 2012 standart
software on them right?

Sorry for being unclear on the clusters part, i meant HA/failover. we have 2 2008R2 enterprise servers in cluster with shared storage and i was trying to clarify how could i add more vms there.
assuming your failover solution involves traditional server hardware, each failover node is just another hardware machine, so, for each node you have to count up the procs and VMs, just as you would do for non-failover implementations.
if a server is installed and running/executing, it needs to be licensed.
with current configuration, each server is hosting 2vms and if anything happens single host can accommodate all four. I am assuming we have 2 enterprise licenses for them, but if i wanted to run 4vms on each host, we have to buy 2 more enterprise licenses
and install vm togerther with their keys?
There is no Enterprise for WS2012? (WS2012 has STD and DCE)
do you mean as in WS2008R2ENT ?
You can re-assign licenses from one machine to another machine (under the Volume Licensing terms. I'm not sure about Retail terms, you should check that). There are limitations on how often you can reassign licenses (no more than every 90days)
If hardware "fails", you are allowed to reassign the license in a shorter period than 90days.
