Xseve RAID Drives won't hot swap

Hi all
Our Xseve Raid drives seem to have stopped hot swapping. Pressing the pop out bar should (according to the manual) turn off the green power light on the drive enabling you to just pull it out. However the green light never goes off.
Any ideas
Cheers

Uhhh...
That's not how it works. If you release the handle, the drive will keep running and operate just fine. Releasing the handle does not tell the RAID "prepare to unmount." It in fact does nothing.
You can just yank the drive. It will beep, and complain (as it should). You can insert a new drive and the RAID set will be rebuilt on it (so long as the drive is indicated to be "available for use" in the Xserve RAID).
I don't know what manual you're reading, but it's wrong.

  • RAID DRIVE WON'T WORK IN LINK MEDIA BROWSER

I have a RAID 5 drive connected to my MACPRO (MacPro5,1), OSX 10.9.2. Its working fine on OS. In Premiere Pro CC I can import files from it no problem, everything seems to be fine until I try to link media from it. The link media browser won't access it. I can see it, I can see the RAID drives icon, but it won't access the files.
In the link media browser it won't show on the Local Drives list on the left pane. When I double click on local drives, on the right pane I can see the RAID HD icon, but when I click on it it won't open it. It knows its there but can't access it. I don't get it. I can import files from it, etc, but not link files. I would have to redo the whole sequence with files from that RAID drive and its days of work.
I would appreciate enormously any help with this issue.

    OS 10.9.5
    OWC Mercutry ELite Pro Dual.
    RAID 0
    Thunderbolt.
No adapters or daisy chaining going on.
The RAID is new and only has about 700GB of data on it.
I read on Creative Cow that alexojedav522 was able to figure out that the size of the drive was his issue:
    https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/3/954245
After reading that I tried repartitioning my RAID into two sections of 2tb each (let's call them Partition1 and Partition2).
So Partition1 is just the original partition (which was 4TB) shrunken down to 2TB.
Partition2 is the brand new partition.
Oddly enough, I can access Partition2 via Media Browser just fine.
And when I move media onto it I can relink it as well).
But Partition1 is still not accessible via Premiere at all.
I am currently moving everything off of Partition1 and onto Partition2, so that I can at least relink my project and get to work.
But obviously that isn't a permanent solution.

  • "Extra" Internal Hard Drives won't mount - swap, /, and /home work.

    Hello All,
*** I'm updating my post finally. Sorry it's so long, I'm not entirely sure what is and isn't relevant.
*** Also I think it's a mix up with RAID causing the issue, as I'll address below, but in case I'm wrong I wanted to include the other information that came to mind before I noticed the RAID issue (because the RAID issue doesn't make a lot of sense to me).
First off, I'm running Arch64 and KDE4 with my system up to date. Also I have Gamin installed and not FAM. I use ReiserFS on all of my partitions and drives.
I have six hard drives in my computer, all of which are SATA drives. One is a WD 150GB Raptor with my swap, /, and /home partitions on it, the other five are for extra storage on what I call my media-server (they mount to /media/media-server/1 ,2 ,and so on). They only have one partition each. Of those five the first (/media/media-server/1) is a WD 1TB drive, the other four are WD 500GB drives of identical model.
All of the Raptor's patitions, swap, /, and /home mount just fine.
On top of that the 1TB drive mounts just fine. But the four 500GB drives will not mount at all. They show up in Dolphin, Disk Utility, KwikDisk, KDiskFree, and Partition Manager. However, their size is not shown and/or marked N/A, except in Partition Manager, where their size is shown. They are not seen by 'df'.
    Output from 'df':
    df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    udev 10M 308K 9.7M 4% /dev
    /dev/sda2 25G 7.7G 17G 32% /

    /dev/sda3 112G 90G 22G 81% /home
    /dev/sdb1 932G 919G 13G 99% /media/media-server/1
*** As for removable media, it's being a bit odd. When I first wrote this post removable media, specifically USB flash drives and SD media cards mounted fine. A while after that they'd show up in Device Notifier, but wouldn't mount. Just a little while ago they wouldn't show up in Device Notifier and wouldn't mount. Now they show up fine and mount fine again. This is possibly unrelated, I'm not sure.
Depending on what method I try to mount my hard drives I either get an 'only root can mount that' error or else a HAL drive busy or already mounted error, followed by a 'drive is not mounted' error when I use umount to double check.
*** Permissions are working better now , Dolphin isn't giving me the 'only root can mount' errors anymore. Still can't mount the drives though.
All of this output is from when the drives are listed in /etc/fstab:
    Konsole output:
    mount /dev/sdf1
mount: only root can mount /dev/sdf1 on /media/media-server/5
    sudo mount /dev/sdf1
mount: /dev/sdf1 already mounted or /media/media-server/5 busy
    umount /dev/sdf1
umount: /dev/sdf1 is not mounted (according to mtab)
    sudo umount /dev/sdf1
    umount: /dev/sdf1: not mounted
    Dolphin output:
An error occurred while accessing 'MediaServer5', the system responded: org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.PermissionDenied: Device /dev/sdf1 is listed in /etc/fstab. Refusing to mount.
Device Notifier output (pops up when I try to mount the drives in Dolphin):
org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.PermissionDenied: Device /dev/sdf1 is listed in /etc/fstab. Refusing to mount.
    Partition Manager:
The file system on partition /dev/sdf1 could not be mounted.

Device Notifier output (pops up when I try to mount the drives in Dolphin):
An error occurred while accessing 'MediaServer5', the system responded: org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.InterfaceLocked: The enclosing drive for the volume is locked
I have tried listing (with the UUID method and the /dev method) and not listing the drives in /etc/fstab, and I have 'hal' and 'dbus' daemons in /etc/rc.conf (and I've tried using only the hal daemon and not the dbus in /etc/rc.conf). I've also tried not listing 'hal', 'dbus', and 'kdm' and only booting to terminal and then mounting the drives manually, that doesn't work either.
Here is my /etc/fstab (back to using UUID's):

I attempted to add the other drives to /etc/mtab but they get overwritten upon a reboot. I've drived mounting the drives from konsole and dolphin.
All my drives used to work. At one point I had Chakra installed and had this issue after an update, however after thinking about it the problem may have actually started after the power flashed on and off here. I couldn't fix it so I installed Arch64 and KDE4 (the normal KDE from the Arch repos, not KDEMod) thinking maybe it was a Chakra specific issue. That fixed it at the time. It later happened on my Arch install. I reinstalled Arch again and the issue was gone. However the issue is back. Again I think it was after a power outage/flash but it was also after an update that included a kernel update. Best I can remember each time it's happened has been after a kernel update and power flash. So I can't say for sure which is the cause.
Oddly though if I boot from a live disc (in my case a Chakra Live DVD) I can mount and access all of the drives just fine.
Another oddity, is that in 'Disk Utility' (palimpsest) there is a 1.5TB RAID-5 array listed. The only thing I can figure is that that is what is making the individual drives busy.
Here's a screenshot from Disk Utility of the RAID-5 array:
    http://theavataroftime.com/sites/defaul … enshot.png
After talking to a friend I remembered that quite a while back (over a year) we had messed around trying to setup a RAID array and dual boot WindowsXP. However, we never could get it working quite right, not even just in Linux without dual booting. I really can't say what all we did/tried, it's been too long. I realize that's not much help but...
Anyway I'm pretty certain I deleted everything RAID related at the time and turned it off. However I must be mistaken or I guess the array wouldn't be showing up.
I apologize, I really know nothing about RAID or RAID controllers. I do have an onboard RAID controller, but it's not a full fledged hardware RAID controller. It's onboard, but doesn't have it's on proccessor like good hardware RAID would. Or that's the way I understand it. Perhaps 'hybrid' is the proper term?
I checked in BIOS and my onboard RAID controller is off.
I take it that my attempts at setting up a RAID array before are still in the MBR (on that note I use GRUB and have never used LILO)? That's the only place I can think of that any leftover RAID configurations wouldn't have been wiped during reinstalling and reformatting the drives and partitions? I've reformatted my drives completely and changed the size of swap, /, and /home on several occasions since then, as well as formatting the media-server drives to ReiserFS (not sure what FS I was using when trying to setup RAID before. Perhaps FAT32 since I was trying to dual boot).
I clicked the stop array button in Disk utility, and then all the options except start array went away. Then I clicked start, and instead of my four media-server drives being listed at the side of Dolphin there was one 1.4TB drive. I rebooted and now it's back to the 4 500GB media-server drives.
I'm worried about losing a bunch of data, so I'm hesitant to start experimenting. How should I go about getting rid of the remnants of the RAID array safely?
Also here's a screenshot of MediaServer5 from Disk Utility. The other 500GB drives have the same info minus the names and labels of course:
    http://theavataroftime.com/sites/defaul … enshot.png
*** I had forgotten about dmesg output. It's quite long so instead of copying it, here's a link to it:

Thanks for advice on the matter.

  • 10.9 update effects on software RAID drives

    Hi everyone,
I would like to update my mac pro from 10.8 to 10.9 . I backed up everything but my major concern is that I have 2 HDDs that are RAIDed by the OS (software). The OS is on a seperate PCI SSD from OWC.
Is there any change that the software raid drives won't mount properly after 10.9 update?
    Thanks,

    Hi.
I tried the upgrade yesterday on a Mac Pro with a stand alone system drive and a mirrored RAID set currently being used as a scratch disk.
System disk is fine, but the scratch disk gives me the 'Initialize Disk?' dialog
So DON'T just upgrade to 10.9 when you are using a software RAID.
I didn't loose valuable data, it was primarily a lot of Final Cut render files, but I still wanna find a way to do the upgrade with having to copy and de-RAID the disks.
I'll be posting when I have any information on whats going wrong/how to do the upgrade and if any one gave any info, please share.
    /Krut

  • External RAID hot swap setup..

hello everyone! I have the first generation of the G5 - dual 2GHz. since I am doing video editing I would really like to know which RAID hot swap setup you all recommend. there are some that are cheap and some that are very expensive. I am looking for a happy medium where quality is the prime subject.
also, what hard drives do you guys recommend? I hear seagate is really good but of course my friend says they are terrible - go figure. thanks for your help!!

Hi I just found this thread similar to my own post on Bacula:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11628649#11628649
It sounds to me like Time Machine is a horrible idea in my situation. Time Machine does hourly copies of files that change by timestamp. If we're deploying MySQL (no hot backup stability guarantee) with 5+TB data files, Time Machine will try to copy that 5+TB file every hour if even a single byte is updated. That will rapidly constipate our RAID no matter how many drives we throw at it! Not to mention it doesn't have the tape support we need (that I know of). It just doesn't seem like a feasible option for us but my CIO still isn't sold on Bacula (free).
Does anybody have experience with Bacula (or Time Machine) on XServe in an enterprise-level environment? I just don't see Time Machine working for us.
    Thanks!

  • TD100x hot swap drives

I need to add drives to my TD100x.  I currently had 3 drives in a RAID 5 configuration.
Can I add individual drives without creating a raid volume? I want to use then for image backup of the RAID.
I have been using external USB 2 drives, but it takes 5 hours to image 300GB
    Thanks to all,
    Sol
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

you can format a non-configured drive in the LSI BIOS, LSI software, or windows disk management (diskmgmt.msc).
the hot-swap brackets come with lenovo drives.   however, you might be able to find the brackets online.   the brackets you need might match what was discussed in this thread.

  • Internal drives hot swap-able??

I have 4 drives in my G4 MDD and I only need 2 on all the time and the other are back ups that I usually only use once a week.
I usually leave them unplugged until I need them, then with the G4 off plug them in and start up
My Question is: can I plug them in while the computer is running? are they hot swap-able like a firewire drive or is it safer to shut down plug them in and restart
    Thanks

Hello! No you should not try re-connecting them while powered up. You're really asking for trouble by leaving them off and you're not saving any electricity to amount to anything. The strat/stop cycle of a hard drive is the hardest thing on a drive and takes many times the electricity than running them for many hours. Leaving them on all the time also keeps them at more of a constant temperature. I've seen drives that were working find day in and day out and when stored for a few weeks sometimes won't boot at all. I run everything 24/7/365 and have for over 10 years with no significant problems. Sure a hard drive will fail from time to time but I'm running some many yeras old. Hope this answers your question. • Ts440 70AQ000BUK info on Hot Swap drives

I have just purchased a TS440 70AQ000BUK online and am wondering about the Hot Swap drive bay. Does this machine come with caddy's i can install my own drives in or do i need to procure caddys. if i need to procure caddys can someone advise the Lenovo part number and or provide a link to where i can procure them from. Lastly this machine permits 4 hot swap drives, is it possible to connect 1 or 2 drives directly to the mother board too? can i replace the Optical drive with disk?
This is a UK spec machine and i am in the UK. the manuals i have seen so far are very vague on the detail i have requested above.
    Thanks in advance
    Chris

For anyone else passing through, this link is to the parts list for the ts440

the hot swap caddy trays are part number::  03X39692 described as:: FRU HS 3.5" HDD Tray V3.0
searching the web for 03X39692 shows lots of sellers on eBay selling these for ~$15 with extortionate shipping to UK of ~$12 per item.

  • HP ProLiant ML110 G7 Intel Xeon E3-1220 RAID 1 with hot swap configuration

    Dear All;
Am going to purchase 'HP ProLiant ML110 G7 Intel Xeon E3-1220' server partnumber '470065-591'. I want to know little more about its RAID controller. The above mensioned server having only two 500GB HDD. I want to configure RAID 1 on it and i want to add one more HDD 'HP 500GB 3G SATA 7.2K 3.5in MDL HDD' as hot swap for the RAID 1. here are my questions
    1) it support RAID 1
i checked on few blogs. then i confirm I can configure RAID 10 with two HDD. so it will work same as RAID 1.
    2) it will suport hot swap
actually first time am going to install RAID. Thats why am asking these questions.

    Hi:
I recommend you also post your question in the HP Business Support Forum -- ML Servers section.

  • Erazer X510 Hot Swap Drive?

This may seem like a dumb question...
I bought a new erazor X510 and am in the process of configuring it with Win8.1   The unit has a hot swap drive bay, which is a very cool feature.   I purchased a new 1TB western digital SATA drive today and now need to install it...
is it really as simple as putting it in the drive slot and plugging it in?   The machine doesnt see it.   Of course, I dont know if I have to format it, connect some cables or what.   The Erazer booklet only really describes how to put the HD in the hot swap chassis.
How do I get the machine to see the new HD?
    kind regards
    Eric

I to have a question about the hotswap bays.
I purchased one and found it very useful (once I had downloaded the trial version software - Swap Manager - from the vipower website - http://www.vipower.com).  Issue is that given the trial period for swap-manager is over the drive becomes useless, becuase without it every time i go to turn the power of via the switch the system locks up.
Question is whether there is a way in xp professional that allows you to swap out drives without closing down.
Or anyone know of a crack for swap-manager (as I refuse to by software when I was told that the hardware was all i needed).

  • Hot swapping DLT tape drives

Is it possible to hot-swap a tape drive on an Enterprise 4000 running Solaris 5.5.1?
I have an E4000 with an array and tape drive attached. The drive seems to be kaput. I can get it to run for a little while, but my cron backups are failing. I've done all the hardware chacking I can (I'm 2500 miles away from the server) and had the on-site techs check the scsi connections, recycle the unit, clean it, et al.
I don't know where in the chain the drive is, or even if it's on the same scsi bus as the array. Is there any way I can find out which bus it's on, and which bus the array is on?
Assuming it's either the last device on the chain attached to the array or on it's own scsi bus, can I swap it with another drive set to the same scsi address?
    Thanks,
    Mark

As Emily Latilla said, "Never mind..." Answered the question myself.

  • TS430 hot swap drive tray options

I purchased a TS430 without any hard drives and need the drive trays to get it operational. IBM/Lenovo is out of the trays for the hot swap drive bay. There's a long wait 2-3 months to get these parts, either 03X3835 or 03X3696. Found a third party selling these pieces but he's asking $80-85 for each, way too expensive.
Is there a third party product that'll be compatible instead? Anyone using a tray for another IBM/Lenovo model or just a generic tray that works on TS430? Please let me know. Thanks!

No 03x3835 in-stock at the IBM Parts Sales number you posted above, possibly months for more; and while I specifically asked about alternative/replacement frus, server tech support (in Atlanta, GA, and seems to be staffed with very few knowledgable people) said there weren't any active ones. Lenovo only sells through the channel, no direct sales for server parts, so presumably one of their distributors (Ingram, Synnex, Supercom, Tech Data, D&H, Hartco) have them...
As an authorized reseller, I just brought in a TS430 0441-11U for a customer, but now I cannot find any drive trays for the 8 drives we're using.
It seems every time I try and sell/service something Lenovo, I have this 10+ phone call run around trying to get something done that should be easy enough.

  • Hot swapping backup drives

I have a SPARC T5120 server - running production. I want to hot-swap the SCSI backup drives. The original backup drives are not mounted file systems, the system is running UFS and the drives are not mirrored. Can I simply swap out and mount the drives, or do I need to run cfgadm or anything else in order to recognize the drives? The drives are the same size. This is in preference to powering down the server and rebooting with the new backup drives in place. System is running Solaris 10. All suggestions appreciated.

    Running cfgadm, I see this:
    Ap_Id Type Receptacle Occupant Condition
    c1 scsi-sata connected configured unknown
    c2 scsi-bus connected unconfigured unknown
    c3 scsi-bus connected unconfigured unknown
    The vebose listing is:
    Ap_Id Receptacle Occupant Condition Information
    When Type Busy Phys_Id
    c1 connected configured unknown
    unavailable scsi-sata n /devices/pci@0/pci@0/pci@2/scsi@0:scsi
    c2 connected unconfigured unknown
    unavailable scsi-bus n /devices/pci@0/pci@0/pci@8/pci@0/pci@1/pci@0/scsi@8:scsi
    c3 connected unconfigured unknown
    unavailable scsi-bus n /devices/pci@0/pci@0/pci@8/pci@0/pci@1/pci@0/scsi@8,1:scsi
The mounted, operating disks are /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s#, the backup disks are /dev/dsk/c1t1d0s#. Will running the cfgadm unconfigure have any effect on the mounted drives? Don't want to unconfigure my boot drives while the system is running production.

  • MSI 7125 board and Esata drive hot swapping

Hello. New member with a MSI-7125 board. I have the OEM board that Geeks had. Pretty much the same as the regular 7125. I want to use an external eSATA drive and attach it using a simple eSATA bracket that just connects to the board's internal sata ports, or I will use a PCI controller card. I'm told that either will work, and that I can have hot swapping on either too.  I want to be able to turn on and off the drive without turning off windows. I don't want to use the external drive as my main drive. Can anyone confirm that either interface method will work? I'm supposing the simple bracket might be faster since it will have no PCI bus to go through. Thanks

I've listed below a couple of sites that you may be intrested in. They offer the option of using eSATA or SATA on the rear plates. Don't confuse them as they use different plugs on the cables.

  • Drives won't wake with HighPoint RocketRAID Quad eSATA 6Gb/s For Mac 644

Just setting up and configuring a new 2010 12 Core Mac Pro 2.93Ghz with a HighPoint RocketRAID Quad eSATA 6Gb/s For Mac 644, and I've run into a problem. Currently, I have four WD WD600 Velociraptor drives hooked up to the card, functioning as individual drives (haven't tried RAID as of yet). OS 10.6.4, and version 1.0 of the Highpoint software.
Anyway, the card seems to work well, but I'm having big problems when I put the computer to sleep. If it's only asleep for a short time, the drives hooked to the RocketRaid card will be there. If the sleep time is longer (a few hours or more), they will no longer be in the Finder. When I wake the computer, I do hear the drives hooked to the card spin up, but they're not there. I've tried powering the drive case on and off, and that does not bring them up. Also tried unplugging and re-plugging them, and that also does not work. Going into "more info" in About this Mac shows that the card is still there. The only way to get the drives back, though, is to restart the computer. This is a drag for me, because I use my system mainly with Logic Pro, and load huge banks of samples that take a long time to load.
This card is supposed to be able to go to sleep. I wonder why it won't. I've sent multiple support requests to Highpoint, with no response. I'd sure like to find an eSATA 4 port card that would sleep. Unfortunately, there aren't many eSATA 3.0 6Gb/s options on the market yet.
Any input, advice, suggestions would be welcome.

Sonnet does not endorse every drive with their products, harkens back to SCSI which some people assume a drive is a drive is a drive in spite of persistent problems, and, there have always been "bugs" in Apple's AHCI and drivers.
would suggest the FirmTek SeriTek/2ME4-E for the Apple Mac Pro. You can view its performance tables with various configurations here: http://www.firmtek.com/seritek/seritek-2me4-e/perform/
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11163806#11163806
    To quote FirmTek:
The ability to hot swap hard disks is typically a function of the eSATA controller driver. I found the Apple Built-in AHCI driver may not always support hot swap with all SATA enclosure types. If you find this is the case with your particular dock then a restart may be required.
The benefit of the built-in Apple AHCI driver is that it provides instant support for several SATA controllers. The downside to the AHCI driver is that it has limitations and may not work properly or at all with some configurations. In addition, if the AHCI driver does not work for you the company that sold the controller usually cannot correct the issue as the AHCI driver was not built by them.
To address these issues FirmTek designed a driver for the 6G based SeriTek/e6G that allows it to properly hot swap with direct connect and Oxford 936/946 based enclosures. In addition, the new FirmTek driver also supports port multiplier based enclosures like the SeriTek/5PM. A dedicated driver can provide extra features that may not be available with the AHCI driver.
A 4-port card for direct connect, a 2-port card for what? PM case? SSDs?

Another user was totally unhappy with the HP RR and was looking for ideas, I gave him a bunch, but never returned to follow up on their thread. So no idea or help there. I think CalDigit to drive 8/12-bay using mini-SAS interface.
