Xterm won't run on fresh arch install [SOLVED]

I had to reinstall arch because I screwed up somehow when trying to upgrade the kernel (something about illegal blocks.)
This time, I installed from the ftp rather than the cd, in order to start out with kernel 2.6.28-ARCH. after I installed xorg, and a few other things, and after i used hwd -xa to write an xorg.conf file (also tried my old xorg.conf, but I got the same error), startx returned three errors. it couldn't load the ati or radeon modules, and it couldn't load type1 or record modules. to fix the radeon modules, I installed xf86-video-ati w/ pacman, to fix the others, I commented them out. after I started x (into windowmaker), xterm refused to run. I installed aterm, but it refused to run, as well. I tried reinstalling them, but to no avail.
also i'm getting error "config/hal couldn't initialize context" (didn't notice I was still getting that, since x was actually starting)
any ideas?

hwd -xa
If the file is present, it will simply edit the file and not overwrite it thereby causing headaches.
Also when you installed xorg, did you install the whole package? because if you didn't install xterm from the package, xterm obviously will not start up.
definately did. I will check the pts thing.

  • Photoshop CS3 installs but won't run on new OS install

    Hello,
I've been searching through the forums and have seen some users with a similar problem, but haven't found any info that's relevant to my situation.
I have done a fresh install of Windows XP Pro SP2 and decided to install a brand-new copy of CS3 at the same time.
This computer is totally fresh - there are no printers, no TWAIN drivers, no funny fonts or games installed. The only software on this machine is Windows and whatever updates Windows Update has pushed out.
The Photoshop installer runs fine - no crashes or error messages. However, when I try to start up Photoshop, I just get the outer frame of the app window and (usually) the File / Edit / Image / Layer... menu bar. There is no splash screen, and no palettes appear. If I click anywhere in the app window, the menu bar disappears and the title bar says "Not responding".
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling from both the DVD and the web download. I've tried selecting the "repair" option on the install screen. I've tried downloading and installing the 10.0.1 update.
I tried installing Lightroom and Reader to see if those work (they do).
I tried installing the latest video driver for my gfx card.
None of these change the behaviour I've been seeing at all. I opened a support case with Adobe about 4 days ago but haven't gotten a response yet.
Any thoughts? I was able to run PS CS1 on this computer just fine before I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled everything, so I don't think it's a hardware issue.
    Thanks,
    Thomas Park

    Hi Guys,
Ive got the same problems as you, Win XP SP2 on RAID 1 hard disk set on an AMD raid controller, but I have no driver to roll-back to.
Ive installed Photoshop CS3 and also Acrobat Standard 8 (which used to run fine on an old system), but all i get now is the blank window with the menu and title bar and thats all.
Can some one help?  (will this licensing patch resolve the issue - and where can i get it from?)
    Thanks

  • [SOLVED]Some issues with fresh arch install.

I freshly installed arch after a pretty long period of time of using other distributions and forgot how many issues I have to deal with when using it.
Alsamixer does not detect my headphones when i plug them in...(does not mute / unmute automatically speakers / headphones)
And another issue with the xorg server i think, I have a notebook and after every reboot i have to look up after touchpad with xinput --list then   --setprop <id>. How can I make it permanent? It's annoying.

Add a command to toggle the auto-mute with the same key, perhaps?
Anyway, that command in my i3 set up does not effect the auto-mute mode so there may be something else going on in your system.
Ooops -- my mistake, my system does that as well...
Maybe something to do with pulseaudio -- I didn't have pulseaudio when I used i3 and I didn't notice that problem then.
EDIT: It might be wise to open a fresh thread for this specific problem -- be sure to use a descriptive title to get the attention of the sound experts (not me!).

  • Apache http server won't run - error 1067 - after installing forms

Hi, I succesfully installed the 9i on a Windows XP machine. I included the Apache HTTP server in the install. It all worked fine. Then I installed the Oracle development suite (rapid application development selection), and since cannot get the Apache server to run. It gives error 1067. On issueing "F:\oracle\ora90\Apache\Apache>apache.exe start -k" I get the following error: "Syntax error on line 14 of F:\oracle\ora90\rdbms\demo\aqxml.conf: Invalid command 'ApJServGroupMount', perhaps mis-spelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration".
Any ideas?? I amnew to both Oracle and Apache. Thanks for any help offered.

did you install the development suite on a different Oracle home? In case it is on its own oracle home, it happens that the new install overwrites the PATH environment variable and sets the path of the new oracle home prior to the previously installed oracle home, this could affect old oracle home, since it will be looking for libraries and executables at the wrong OH. Change back the PATH environment variable, so the old OH is referred first.
Start once more the oracle http server, first by means of the windows service, and verify the httpd.pid file doesn't exist prior to attempt restarting it.

  • Install password in 0.7 arch install(solved!)

Downloaded the arch 0.7 base .iso and managed to load xorg and kde.
While in x, I forgot to install the password.
Now, the arch log-in appears on reboot and I have no password.
I have tried the menu items to no avail.
Whazzup?  How to install passwd without X which doesn't show drom the log-in menu.

From you description I assume your talking about trying to login using a login manager. When you get to the login manager hit CTRL-ALT-F1 to get to the console, then at the login prompt type in your username and hit ENTER for the password (which should work if no password was set). then use passwd at the command line to set the password. Hit CTRL-ALT-F7 to get back the the login manager.
If that doesn't work you can boot up with the install cd, mount your root partion and edit [mount-point]/etc/shadow and delete the second field in the line for you user which will reset your password to nothing. For example I would change
    username:###############:12662:0:99999:7:::
    to
    username::12662:0:99999:7:::
you may also have to remove the "x" in the second field for you user in [mount-point]/etc/passwd also
    remove the cd and reboot.

  • How do I install the FM10 licensing fix when Adobe Update Installer won't run?

Adobe Update Installer won't run so can't install FM10 licensing fix
This question is Not Answered.(Mark as assumed answered)

Because FM10 began crashing with "fatal" errors whenever I tried to generate a TOC for a small (65 page) book, I researched workarounds and none of them worked. Now that I have delivered a crippled deliverable via Acrobat manipulations, I would like to fix FM. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it, got some updates, and then received the "licensing fix" error that popped up in January. I'm wondering why this fix was included not in the updates. That said, the licensing fix package, first, would not unzip so I downloaded it again. I unzipped it but I got a message that Adobe Updater Installer could not run and after several clicks I found that file. I reinstalled Adoble Update Installer but it still does not run.
I am running Windows XP and have TCS 3.5.I uninstalled FM and RH but not Acrobat, Captivate, or Photoshop.
So, now what? Listen to my supervisor who says never use FM again?
P.S. Why do I have to enter a title for my question and then do it again when this page opens??

Give Adobe Support a call or contact the TCS team at [email protected] - something in your environment is causing the installer to fail (I'd guess).

  • A fresh Arch installation - from VirtualBox?

    Hey,
My dad's laptop is about 2-year old LG. It runs Vista, and it runs like shit..
I wanna install Arch on the laptop for him, for a much better user experience.
Since I am only gonna see him on the weekend for only several hours,
I wanna make a fresh Arch install, tweak everything for his convenience, on a VirtualBox
enviroment, and then dd the partition to a fresh partition on his harddrive.
Can anyone think of any "show stoppers" as to why not go that way?
    Can anyone offer any tips?
    Thanks a lot,
    fiod

It should be fine, with one exception, the initial ramdisk.  You'll need to ensure that the hard drive controller's kernel modules are installed in the MODULES= section of /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
You should be able to boot the arch installer on the desktop and install the hwdetect script
    ~]$ hwdetect --hostcontroller
    MODULES="pata_acpi ata_generic ahci ata_piix ehci-hcd ohci-hcd"
This many is probably overkill, since it should figure out dependencies, but if you don't want to think too hard about it just put them all in there.
Add those modules into /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and then run:
    mkinitcpio -p kernel26
Then it should be able to boot.

  • Java JDK 7 u17 won't install and Eclipse won't run past boot logo.

Java JDK 7 u17 won't install and Eclipse won't run past boot logo. Eclipse Classic used to work fine for awhile. I haven't used it for a month or two and tried to boot it, Eclipse won't run past boot logo. It looks like JDK is not even there anymore. JDK won't install successfully. I have Mac OS X 10.8.3.
I tried removing Java, re-download JDK multiple times.. same results.
    MyComputer-MacBook-Air:~ MyComputer$ java -version
    java version "1.7.0_17"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_17-b02)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.7-b01, mixed mode)

Paul Adare is correct in saying that you cannot "upgrade" from 32-bit to 64-bit. You can, however, backup your files and reload them onto your PC.
Given that you are able to boot Windows 7 after the failure to install Windows 10 Technical Preview, it is apparent that you are not formatting the drive during your clean installation. There are a number of potential issues an existing configuration can
cause, such as preventing Windows Setup from registering boot files, modifying partitions, or moving an existing installation and data to the windows.old folder. I would recommend removing the partitions from your drive (note: this will erase any data remaining
on the hard disk) during installation to ensure that Windows Setup has a fresh hard drive to install to. If you continue to experience errors, two other factors to take into consideration are:
Does your system use a storage controller that requires loading a driver during Windows Setup?
Is the hardware malfunctioning? Do the hard disk and memory pass testing software like Windows Memory Diagnostic or chkdsk?

Pagemaker is ancient, obsolete and unsupported. It was discontinued over 10 years ago. (Though why it is still sold is a mystery.)
If you want to run PageMaker, your best bet is to use a Win2K or WinXP PC.
Otherwise move to Indesign or look at Serif's PagePlus or Scribus.

Not using Boot Camp, but you should be able to using virtualization software such as Parallels to run Windows concurrently with OS X.

I installed Lion OS X and Logic Pro won't run. I downloaded the 9.1.5 update: "An Eligible Logic Pro Version Was Not Found in the Applications Folder.  This Update require Logic Pro Version 9.0 or higher".  I have Logic Pro Version 9.1.1 installed.
I even pulled the dmg file into the Logic Studio folder in my applications directory and it still does not recognize it.  What do I do now?

    Niel:  Thanks.
For others benefit, here is what happened.
I had installed Logic Studio 9.1 some time ago.......not knowing what all the programs were nor what they did, I created a "Logic Studio" subfolder in my applications folder and put all Logic Studio programs into it so I'd know where they were and could review each at my leisure over time.
My assumption now is that when the updater looks for the Logic Pro program, it looks only in the applications folder.  It seems lame that it would not also look in the subfolders of the applications folder, but that apparently IS the way it works.  Because my Logic Pro program was located in the "Logic Studio" subfolder, the updater just didn't see it..hence the error message I received when I tried to update.
Solution:  I moved all the Logic Studio programs out of the subfolder and now they reside in the applications folder. Ran the 9.1.5 updater and it worked like a charm.
