Xvid in Quicktime 7 on Windows?

Hi,
Sorry if this has been posted before, but I can't find it.
Is there a way to play Xvid .avi files in QuickTime 7.2 on Windows?
As the plugin you can get on Apples site is only for Mac OS X.
Many thanks

Since QuickTime is the main media player for Macs, many 3rd party video codecs on Macs install for use w/ QuickTime. Most 3rd party video codecs on Windows will not work within QuickTime unless they are specifically written to do so. It would be nice if Apple 'fixed' QuickTime for Windows to also use standard Windows codecs.
If you're trying to view a XviD video, you'll have to use WMP or some other 'generic' Windows media player. If you're trying to convert a XviD video to a QuickTime format, you may have to use a different converter (to at least convert it to a format QT can handle). There's a chance renaming the extension of the file to .mp4 might allow it to be read as a generic MPEG-4 file, but probably not. Or you can get a Mac and do it!

  • Xvid on quicktime for windows

Has anyone figured out how to use xvid on quicktime for windows? I'm running windows 7, both 32 and 64 bit.
It seems crazy that it wont work as almost all downloaded films use the xvid codec.
I'd love to be able to get some stuff on my ipod, and quicktimes/itunes seem the best way

Good question ... the xvid people say they are working on their QuickTime integration:
+*I work on Windows and want to use Xvid in Quicktime – is there a plugin available?*+
+There’s a Xvid quicktime plugin available but it’s been created for Mac and is not well maintained at the moment. We’re currently working on improved Quicktime support, which will become part of the Xvid core code base.+

... but I'm afraid it's a bit of a "Watch this space" situation still for xvid. They do have a Windows codec available on their site, but I think that's the one best suited to WMP.

  • Best XVID, AVI Quicktime Codec

    Question
What is the best XVID codec for QT?
    Background
I switched to Mac last year and have a lot of AVI files that do not properly play with quicktime. I remember it took a while to get these to work on my Windows box too as not all codec are made alike. I am having the same trobule on my MAC.
I do not want to install any other XVID/AVI player as I like QT and don't want to clutter my system.
I can play quite a few of these, but have to run to a windows box and use Dr Divx to rencode these files. I have Dr divx on the Mac, but because the codecs are not good, it will not rencode these problematic files.
    Common issues
    1) picture plays, no sound
    2) picture and sound play for a bit, then no sound
    3) no picture and no sound play
In each case, the windows box can play these files.

    Hello, SD.
Try posting in the QuickTime for Mac forum. You'll be more likely to get help there than you will here in the QuickTime for Windows forum.
In the QT for Mac forum, I'd suggest you just search for "XVID" and "AVI". Both get covered quite frequently, so you'll probably find the answer there already.
    Regards.

  • Quicktime for Windows -- on Vista -- opens a .mov movie once, then won't open the move and Quicktime won't even open itself.  I've installed the latest version, and upgraded it to Plus as well.

I am having trouble opening .mov videos with Quicktime on my PC with Vista.  I installed the latest version of Quicktime for Windows (V.7.7), and upgraded it to Pro.  It will open a .mov file once, then after that it will not open any .mov file and in fact, when I try to open the Quicktime player it will not open itself.  If I switch users to Admin, it all works fine, but when I go back to my regular role (where all of my preferences and programs are there for me to use), the same thing happens.  An .mov file will open once, then never again, and the Quicktime player seems to be disabled.
I've tried different .mov files, so it's not a corrupt file that's the problem.  And, in the past (a couple of Quicktime versions ago, I guess), all of this worked just fine.
Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated!

I have the exact same problem. They play on my Mac under Snow Leopard. Transfer to Vista gets a window with black and white and some other noise. No sound either.

  • Can't update quicktime on windows xp. Try to install 7.7.3 and it says I have a newer version installed. I don't of course, I have 7.3.1. Have never been able to update it. Even uninstalling older version it still says a newer version is already installed

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATION" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up").
In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any QuickTime entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC. Now try another QuickTime install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • I receive the following error message when trying to install QuickTime for Windows "Error writing to file C:/Program Files/QuickTime/QTSystems/QuickTimeCheck.ocx. Verify that you have access to that directory."

I recieve the following error message when trying to install Quicktime for Windows "Error writing to file C:/Program Files/QuickTime/QTSystems/QuickTimeCheck.ocx. Verify that you have access to that directory."  I just trying to get the latest version of iTunes.  Thanks

"Error writing to file C:/Program Files/QuickTime/QTSystems/QuickTimeCheck.ocx. Verify that you have access to that directory."
That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • Help with Quicktime for Windows 7 64-bit

I am having a problem with the latest version of Quicktime for Windows. When I launch Quicktime and then 'click' on any icon for download I can see the sentence, "Connecting to iTunes" and then I am redirected to download iTunes... Problem is that I already have iTunes.
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1 and up to date.
    iTunes version 11.1.3.8
    Quicktime version 7.74.80.86
I Unibstalled both products, using the guide provided from Apple. I, then downloaded and installed iTunes first, then I downloaded Quicktime and installed it. I had the same issue. Next, I went to Control Panel/ "programs and Features, used the "change" option and clicked "repair". I did this for both iTunes and Quicktime. They ran fine. No error messages, nothing in event logs, no trace of an install log to try to diagnose this myself. Does anyone have this problem, or can anyone help me to start the diagnosis necessary to solve this?
Second issue came to light after all of the steps I performed; Before, I would conect my iPhone to a USB port and iTunes would launch automatically. Now, it does not. I see my 4s in devices and I see a normal state using device manager. So, I went to "Default Programs" and selected my 4s and the dropdown window no longer has an option for iTunes. However, when I go to choose a default program for audeo, etc. the dropdown mwnu has an option for iTunes.
Thanks for reading and I would like some help.

I found the problem and the solution. In Internet Explorer ver 11 / manage plugin's, make sure that the Apple plugin's are enabled. My setings were incorrect, the plugin ws siabled. Enabled it and all is well!

  • Quicktime on Windows clients can't open files in folders with long names!!

    Hi,
we've got a really strange problem. We have an Intel Xserve with Leopard Server 10.5.4 which is sharing files over SMB. Everything works fine, except Quicktime on Windows clients (XP Pro and Vista). It looks like the length of the folder names is the problem. If a single folder in the path to the mov has a name that's longer than 8 characters, Quicktime fails with "Error -43: A file could not be found."
    x:\test1234\test.mov works
    x:\test12345\test.mov doesn't work
Same for UNC paths. VLC on Win and Quicktime on OS X work without problems over SMB. Also the problem doesn't exist on other Samba based fileservers.
Any ideas? Perhaps some smb.conf tweaks to fix this?
    Best regards

  • QuickTime on Windows Mac PICT File Text display doesn't work

There is a problem in QuickTime for Windows, which was there with version 6, and still exists in version 7. I have a Macintosh format PICT file, generated in Illustrator, that contains text and graphics. The text is in Arial font of a particular size. Viewing this PICT file on Windows within the QuickTime Player AND the QuickTime PictViewer, the font is scaled far larger than it is in the Mac version, to the point of going way outside a rectangle drawn around the text.
When this same PICT file is imported into Excel or Word on Windows, the text aligns and displays correctly, and at the correct size.
I am a software developer, and I have run PICTS through Quicktime programmatically, and there seems to be a real problem with text handling.
Anyone else seen this? Any ideas?

Let me also clarify this by saying that the font I am using exists both on Windows and Mac platforms.

  • Quicktime and windows 7 beta

Cant seem to play movies any longer, anyone know when an updated or beta app will come out?

Windows 7 is a completely new version of the OS. It's not at all surprising that existing software doesn't work; there's lots of WIndows applications and drivers that don't work, or don't work fully and properly, on Windows 7. If you use beta software, particularly a beta OS, you'd best be prepared to deal with and accept problems and incompatibilities.
Is Apple working on a new version of Quicktime and iTunes to be compatible with Windows 7 beta (which will be the same for the release)
No one who can or will respond here works for Apple, so your question cannot be answered with any certainty. I would be surprised if Apple wasn't working on new versions of iTunes and QuickTime for Windows 7, but none of us can say for sure.
are you just going to wait until it is released before you make it compatible?
It will, I'm sure, depend on when Microsoft can deliver to developers a release of Windows 7 that has stable APIs and other underlying structures. That will apply to all software developers; whether they can release updated versions of their software will depend on whether and to what point Microsoft makes last-minute changes. But based on my experience over literally hundreds of OS releases, I would highly recommend not counting on all your applications, utilities and drivers, from whatever developer (including Microsoft) being updated and fully compatible on the first day Windows 7 is released. It's possible, but highly unlikely.

  • Divx / Xvid for Quicktime?

Any updates on Divx or xvid for Quicktime? Universal of course (for MacBook/intel mac).
Seperate from Quicktime, I see Divx6 was released, but that costs $ and I am not clear if it is Universal.
Of course I will do my own research, but I just thought I would throw out this post real quick to see if anybody has kept up to date.
    thanks

Instead of waiting for the elusive Flip4Mac UB components (which have not even reached private beta testing yet), why not try this:
Download the free Popwire WMV9 import/export components and rock out playing WMV files natively in Quicktime on your MBP. Works like a champ.
    Now buy me a beer.
    Here's the link:
    http://www.popwire.com/downloadtrial.php?productsid=7
Now that's two bottles of beer.
FYI: The trial is for the "groovy add-on's," so just download the package and let those expire; the components you need for native QT playability are free and don't expire.
    That's three.

  • Where can I download Quicktime for windows?

Where can I download the free Quicktime for windows? All I found on Apple's site was Macintosh versions.

Apples page uses "detection" scripts to serve up the proper version. Log in using a Mac and that is the only version the links send you to. Same for a PC.
Visit a friend that has a PC and burn the file to a CD.
