If you've forgotten the passcode to unlock your phone then you will need to connect it to the computer that you normally sync to and you should then be able to reset the phone and restore/re-sync your content to it (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1212) - you may need to put the phone into recovery mode in order to be able to reset it : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808

when i go to the phone i cannot pick a contact, edit a contact, dial a number, basically i cant use any phone features. nothing. i cant use favorites, recents, keypad, or voicemail, the only thing i can do is scroll my contacts, and go back home. everything else on the "phone" works fine, except for this pretty important feature. i can answer calls, but not make them. my "phone" is only been out the box barely 24 hours and this already happened...anybody help?

I just had the same problem. The way I resolved it was by holding the button on the top down for several seconds. You are then prompted to "slide to power off". Power it off, and then press the button on the top again to restart your iphone. I was then able to use all of the phone functions again.

There are Apps for the iPad which allow this: Skype, etc.

Even if it is a hardware problem they should fix it regardless of warranty. If you buy a car and after 1.5 years the doors fall off due to a failure in their design and construction, do you think the car manufacturer could pull off what Apple is trying to do? Is the phone in a case? Try taking it out of the case. If that doesn't work, then your proximity sensor is broken. You'll need to bring your phone to Apple for evaluation.

That screen is telling you the iPhone has entered the recovery mode...you must follow the recovery mode instructions in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808 to attach to a computer running iTunes, in summary:

Whoa whoa no need to go restoring stuff yet, once you've done that check to verify you have done what Overlook2011 IF that doesn't work for calendars ensure your default account for calendars is set to iCloud and in calendars that it is told to "Show all calendars"
