Y-splitter cable for PCIe card

I am considering a Dynex 2-Port FireWire 800 and 1-Port FireWire 400 PCIe Adapter (DX-PCI2PF) for my Mac Pro. The card has a 4-pin power connector to receive extra power, if desired.
Where can I find a cable that goes from one of the power connectors on the motherboard of the mac Pro, split it, and one of the Y legs go to the 4-pin connector on the card?
I could do without a Y. But, since one of the power connectors on the motherboard is already used for a 2nd video card, I would like to give myself an extra power connection after installing the Dynex card.

*The hatter* - Thanks for your quick reply!
Actually, I was looking at this card on eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Dynex-2-Port-800-1-Port-400-FireWire-PCIe-Adapter-DX-PCW0QQitemZ330419493351QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item4cee8959e7#h t_775wt941
The description states "Built-in 4-pin power connector for receiving extra power supply." That's why I became curious.
The FW800 port on the back of my Mac Pro is already used to connect to a FW800 hub that is 15 feet away. And, I want to have at least two more FW800 ports to attach (1) OWC's Mercury On-The-Go Pro drive and (2) MacBook Pro in Target Disk Mode.
For my purpose, do you know that these PCIe cards would not need extra power supply?
Also, what would one connect to these PCIe cards that necessitates extra power supply?

  • How to adjust IRQ for PCI card within BIOS - K7T Turbo

    Hello,
I have a new Diamond firewire external 160 Gb harddisk.
In spite I have upgraded the BIOS for my K7T Turbo board to version 3.6 (by specs at MSI at least I should use version 3.4 to run 160 Gb HD's), I get I/O errors after trying to copy lot of data to the harddisk.  ;( Afterwards I am losing contact to the device and get exclamation marks within the system configuration.
In searching for the errors, it could be the controller of the harddisk itself is not running proper, because I get NO fault by the firewire device within my PC, but just the Diamond controller + harddisk.
To make a last try if I can fix it, I want to give the internal firewire card an own IRQ number. Now with PnP options, many devices are sharing the same IRQ 11.
How can I set a fixed IRQ to the fourth (4e) PCI card within the BIOS?
Looking to the settings it seems I only can manage it when it is an ISA card, but those cards are not used any longer in modern mainboards.
Here are some screendumps of the errors.
    1.
No problems after a hard reboot.
    http://members.chello.nl/~l.obers/MSI/1_reboot_no_error_a.gif
    2. Closer look for the following devices.
The contents of the red boxe within the device system shall disappear after the error.. The blue ones do get exclamation marks
    http://members.chello.nl/~l.obers/MSI/2_reboot_no_error_b.gif
3+4. Error messages after a short while when trying to copy many data (above 4 Gb).

    5. Errors within the system configuration.
Input 1 do get an exclamation mark first, afterwards input 2
    http://members.chello.nl/~l.obers/MSI/5_many_data_error_b.gif
The input of the previuos mentioned red box "general volume" (one is of the Diamond controller), is lost.
Within the file explorer also the harddisk volumes are lost.
    6. The log files show a controller error of the disk at IRQ 11
    http://members.chello.nl/~l.obers/MSI/6_system_log.gif
Because no errors are found within the 1394 (firewire) device itself, I guess the problem is the Diamond controller of the harddisk.
But before going to the shop, I want to try to give the HD an own IRQ.
    Regards, Léon Obers

Mmm. I just see some other options.
The device called "1394 CF type II IEEE 1394 SBP2 device is an extrenal firewire Compact flash reader, not a Diamond controller. (It is connected, during the test, but not used for copying files).
In that case, it could be, that the firewire card itself is the troublesome device. First CF-card reader is lost from connection (exclamation mark), afterwards the Firewire harddisk.

  • System profiler "information is not available" for PCI cards

After swapping two cards in their slots, I get the message system profiler "information is not available" for all PCI cards. Mac Pro 4 core 2.66, OS X 4.11 server. The cards are still working. I tried clearing PRAM, etc. Is this a hardware problem or just system profiler being difficult? Is there any way to tell?

That is a bit odd. Maybe try forcing kextd to run can resolve. You might be working off cached info and it is giving System Profiler a hard time. Run this command and then reboot:
    sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions
That will update the modify time of the Extensions folder and trick the system into thinking you installed new drivers. This will force an update of the kernel caches when you reboot.
Not sure it this will do it, but best I could think of.
    Hope it helps.

  • Shopping for PCI cards

    I'm looking for ::
    USB 2.0
    Firewire 800
    SATA controller
    Gigabit ethernet
I'd love to get combo cards if possible. i.e. USB/firewire and Gigabit/SATA. Really any combination of those 4 would be fantastic.
any recomendations? I'm tired of searching eBay and "screening" every auction to see if the PCI cards are compatable with my slots.

anyone know of any *tried and true* devices?

not a whole lot of firewire 800 products. not to mention cards compatable with my G3 desktop.
    helpfull still.
That may be the difficulty in getting the latest USB2/FW800/Gigabit/SATA cards, since when the PCI hardware was introduced with those newer standards the beige G3 was already a dinosaur, so they were likely designed for official support and compatibility with the current computer models at the time and since.
You might have better luck with compatibility with the older USB1/FW400/ATA card for example. (Not sure why you need Gigabit, if the on-board Ethernet is still functional anyway.) That's not to say the newer cards won't work at all, but you may be the guinea pig who finds out if they do. I'd be interested in your results with the SATA, if you can get that to work or not. I haven't heard of any one using them in the G3 here, if so I must have missed it.
Sonnet had a Tempo Trio card that combined USB/FW/ATA, not sure what the latest version of that is now. They provide a good support section with the latest Mac drivers and firmware updates for their older products, also the ACARD brand has several Mac hard drive controllers. Go for a hardware RAID card if you really want to boost disc read/write performance, all the other interface theoretical speeds are still limited by the hard drive read/write heads. With a striped RAID 0, two heads are better than one, as they can operate simultaneously. Let me know if you can get those 250GB SATA working in a RAID 0, I am thinking about going that route when I run out of space with my 2x120GB ATA66 RAID, if I keep the computer going that long. Although the ATA133 card may work just as well.
Anybody using either of these SATA cards in their Beige G3?

Actually I dont think I have any drivers installed.. Because, I used the tap test interface in MAX to find that I have to trigger the 5th line of 0th port of a pci dio 96 card to trigger my device.
I have downloaded and installed Daqmx that suits my labview version and started exploring the options.
Now, I am struggling hard to figure out how to change my requirement that I have mentioned above into an actual program in labview.
All I have is a pci dio 96 card installed, labview 8.2 and daqmx that supports my labview version. I have to make one of the lines to 1 and 0 alternatively.
Can anyone point to a tutorial or some discussion that could help me kick start.
    Thank you,

Search in the examples\DAQmx\Digital folder inside your LabVIEW installation. There are several examples that should give you enough hints at how to go about that. And if you ever get at other problems there are many many more directories in that example folder. :
And an example finder to help you look for the right examples can be found in the Help menu.

  • 100-pin Connector Required when Building Custom Cable for PCI-6031E

Four 100-pin connectors are required to make custom cables to connect the PCI-6031E. Where can I get this connector?

    Hi Tom,
Thanks for your reply.  The ringing (noise if you like, but it is definetly being coupled to the output signal from the source) is occuring during both the logic low and logic high periods of the output.  I agree, this is still within the TTL noise margins, but is staying within the margins the only important thing? - e.g. what happens multiple devices are clocked using the same output pulse - the pulse shape is degraded slightly due to cabling and input capacitance etc, and now, because of the additional ringing, the logic thresholds are being crossed when they shouldn't be.  If you consider that the source signal is 5Vpp and the induced ringing is 0.4Vpp then the rejection ratio would be 20*log10(0.4/5) = -22dB, not very good.  The situation is not as bad when one of the internal timebases is used as the source but this particular application requires an external one.  So, I'm looking for ways to reduce the ringing if you're aware of any.  One possibility might be to reduce the cable length - I'm using the 2m cable so maybe you could try the 1m cable for me and see if things improve.

  • Can PXI card be transparently substituted for PCI card in VME control?

    Background:
We are purchasing a displacement-measuring-interferometer system from Zygo that ships with your NI VME-PCI8012 (777244-03) PCI to VME bridge. The Zygo system includes drivers for the bridge and a Windows application that runs on the host PC to acquire data from the measurement boards in the VME chassis. I wish to connect this system to my NI PXI-based data acquisition system (DAS).
    Question 1:
I need to know if your NI VME-PXI8015, "PXI-8320, MXI-2 System Extender, Board Only Kit" (777573-01) can be installed in my PXI DAS and connected to the VME controller board, and function transparently to the Zygo Windows application that drives the VME system.
    Question 2:
    Our PXI-based DAS has
an embedded controller (NI PXI-8187) that is running Windows XP. Are the drivers that come with the PXI and PCI bridge cards compatible with Windows XP?
Thank you for your help and I look forward to your reply.
    John Price

    Hi John,
Thanks for your reply. Before I respond to your new question, I need to clear something up from my previous response. I misunderstood what you were asking, and posted some information that needs to be clarified.
MXI-3, while a successor to MXI-2, is quite different from MXI-2. MXI-3 is a PCI to PCI bridge , where MXI-2 is a VME to VME bridge. Also, MXI-2 requires the proper driver to function correctly.
For more information about the differences between MXI-3 and MXI-2 see the KnowledgeBase article, Upgrading VXI Systems from VXI-MXI-2 to VXI-8340 Series (MXI-3)
For the current driver required for MXI-2 to function with your
operating system, refer to Current NI-VXI Driver Versions
However this does not change the fact that you CAN replace the PCI-MXI-2 controller that shipped with your Zygo system with a PXI-MXI-2 controller.
As far as working around Zygo's use of the 2.1.1 driver goes, you could try to get your PXI system to work with the 2.1.1 driver. By all that I can tell, the 2.1.1 driver was developed to support PCI-MXI-2 on several operating systems, including Windows 2000, NT, ME, 98, and 95, and so you would need to be operating under in one of the supported operating systems in order for the driver to even be a possible solution. So, assuming you are using a supported operating system, I would download that 2.1.1 driver and install it in your system, and go from there. You can get directly to PCI-MXI-2 driver for Windows by clicking here.
Hopefully this gets you going, but let me know what ends up happening. Good luck!

  • Adapter cable for K8N Diamond Plus PCIE cable?

I guess the K8N Diamon Plus was made before standards were settled, since it has the oldish IDE/Molex power connector for PCIE cards. That while Power Supplies now use the standard connector. Of course there are molex connectors as well on the PS cables, but many power supplies are split into 2 or 4 channels and you're better off using as many channels as possible.
The problem is: I can't find any adapter cable with (female) PCIE --> (male) Molex... I can find cables with one male PCIE and two Molex (don't remember if they were male or female), but not the right kind. I would look more closely now, when buying, and I now know about PS with split/combined settings - but the two PS I have are both "not right" for the Diamond Plus.

  • Driver development for custom PCI card

    Hi friends,
I've a PCI card developed in-house. How to prepare a driver for the same in LabVIEW? Can I develop drivers in VISA? I don't have a manufacture id. Is there any other method to develop a driver for PCI card? Once developed, can I use them for other platforms like VC++? My OS is Windows 9X/NT & 2000. I need a driver to use for all these. Lot of querries! hope I made it clear.

THE ANSWER IS THAT YES YOU CAN DO THIS IN NI-VISA!
Some have said that you need a kernel driver. This is partially true in that a PXI or PCI card (they are the same as viewed by the OS) must have a kernel driver. NI-VISA provides one for you.
You said that you do not have a manufacturer ID. This is a requirement of all PCI cards and no kind of driver will work until the card has one. Once you have this ID, run the VISA PXI Driver Development Wizard and it will generate an INF for you for all supported NI-VISA environments that support PXI/PCI. Read the instructions in the appropriate INF file for how to install it into the system so that the OS will attach NI-VISA to your device. It's really simple. NI-VISA supports PXI/PCI on Windows 95, 98, ME, NT
4, 2000, XP, and LabVIEW RT.
Some have said that MAX will just show you all PXI/PCI devices in your system. Your device will not show up until NI-VISA can see it, and that won't happen until you generate an INF as described above.
Since the INF file associates NI-VISA itself to your card, the ADE you use does not matter. NI-VISA supports PXI/PCI in LabVIEW, CVI, MSVC, Visual Basic, or any other ADE that normally works with VISA.
NI-VISA works well even with more advanced devices because we support all types of register accesses (config, I/O, memory) as well as interrupt handling. Just look at the visa.h that NI ships in the VXIpnp directory. If you are using C/C++, make sure you define NIVISA_PXI before including visa.h. If you use LabVIEW, you need to use the address space numbers as defined in visa.h.
    Good luck.

  • Wireless Lan PCI card Ralink- System Preferences Network Configuration HELP

I just bought a PCI Wireless Lan Card for my G5 tower.
Specifically the card i bought is:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220500089785&ssPageName=STRK: MEWNX:IT
    It is a Ralink - www.Ralinktech.com
I installed the driver. Both the card and the driver show up in the System Profiler.
    BEYOND THIS I AM CLUELESS!

PCI Is at the top of the list. it says NOT CONNECTED next to it. But. Where it says status it says: "STATUS: Cable unplugged" ( and underneath) "The cable for PCI Ethernet Slot 4 is not Plugged In."
    What cable??
Configure is set to "Using DHCP"
As i said before. in system profiler it shows up in the correct slot and the driver is installed.
Ralink has its own software that pops up too called WirelessUtilityCardBusPCI. Without me doing anything, my router name shows up on its list so it does recognize it. But connecting to the internet i cannot do nor getting it to come up in System Prefs. Anybody Mess with WirelessUtilityCardBusPCI?

  • Can we make use of VISA to acknowledge interrupts generated by a PCI card,if yes how ?

(OS:Windows NT) In the read me first file of NI-VISA 2.01 there is a section wich gives information about dedection and acknowledge of PXI interrupts.
I asume that this also works for PCI cards.
But I can not find any information on how to
connect the interrupt with an event callback
    or something of this kind.

    eXitec:
The short answer is yes, this works for both PXI and PCI. This is supported from NI-VISA 2.01 forward (2.5 has the same support).
The PXI Driver Development Wizard allows you to specify the register reads and writes that must take place in the kernel at interrupt time. This is necessary to physically squelch or remove the interrupt from the bus. The resulting .inf file specifies NI-VISA as the kernel driver. Note that only simple reads, writes, and compares are available - no complex algorithms are supported at this time.
For a VISA driver or application, the event notification mechanism is the same as for any other event type, such as SRQ. Call viEnableEvent on the event type VI_EVENT_PXI_INTR for either queueing or callbacks.

  • Upgrading the G3 /DT with USB PCI Card for Printer Connection

I would like to connect a Brother MFC-9160 laser printer to one of my Beige G3 /DT with Macintosh OS 9.2.2 installed.
There are two ways to do that: USB or Parallel. I don't know if Parallel adapters for Macintosh are available. This is the reason why I am favouring the solution of PCI USB upgrade.
The problem is that the few USB adapters I saw on sale on various French Mac warehouses were all USB 2.0 compliant, and required a Power Macintosh G3 /BW.
I suppose that a USB 2.0 compliant card is also de facto USB 1.1 compliant, but I am not sure. Besides the hardware issue, there is of course the problem of support on a Beige G3 for USB 1.1.
Could you please elaborate on the hardware which would run on a Beige G3? I am open to any friendly advice
    Frederic W. Erk

By the way I wonder if it would be possible to
connect to the laser printer through electricity
network. No cables, here because the building in 400
years old and too large. Wireless, he he... Not even
    worth speaking about it....
I'm not sure about what kind of electrical wiring you have available over there, or if these kind of products are compatible, but there are some options in the US for using the electrical outlets in a house to create a LAN network. With this kind of network you could use keep the printer on the B&W and turn on USB printer sharing. Printing from OS 9 on the G3 might not work with all printers. That kind of networking equipment is more costly than just adding a USB PCI card to the G3 to use the printer directly, but you might also be able to share a single high-speed internet connection that way. It all depends on what your needs are.
Is this what you were asking about?

  • 2 questions: validity of my machine's status as a 3.1 Mac Pro, and what PCIE cables for Radeon 4870?

Hello, I bought a used mac pro from a guy that said it was a 3.1.  It runs great and when I go to "About this Mac" and then to "More info" and look at the hardware info, it says that it is indeed a 3,1.  However, the serial number sticker on the back says it's a 2.8!  Any insights into that?  I'm very new to Mac Pro desktops and I just want to make sure I didn't get ripped off.
My second question.  The machine came with the standard X2 quad 2.88 GHz processor, 8gb of Ram, and a Radeon 2200 graphics card.  I bought an ATI Radeon HD 4870 from a guy on craigslist but he didn't have the power cables for it.  He said it wasn't a big deal and after I did some research it looks like I need some PCIE power connectors.  The card takes two, 6 pin power cables.  My question is where do I plug them in on the logic board?  Should it be a 6 pin plug in also meaning I want a 6pin to 6pin cable like this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812200975&nm_mc=KNC-Google Adwords&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-_-pla-_-Internal+Power+Cables-_-N82E16812200975 &gclid=CMW8u4Po5LUCFcdDMgodx2AAyA).
So yeah, the simplest answer I'm looking for is what cables do i need to power my ATI Radeon 4870 in my Mac Pro?  Another way to answer that I guess would be to explain to me the way my power supply works in my mac pro.
    Thanks!

That is an 8-pin. And I just posted Amazon link to 6-pin in another graphic card upgrade thread minutes ago.
And  it had a ATI 2600XT. good thing you replaced it.
10.6.8  tends to run best but try - andkeep 10.8.x and see  how it goes. Also more options later in graphic cards.
Call Apple and have them check  the serial number and they can provide for small $20?fee the OEM  DVDs it shipped with (10.5.x) and  Apple Hardware Test. They can  also sell 10.6.3 DVD
I would have looked for the ATI 5770, better support, the 4870 lacks some ML (Mountain Lion) support for OpenCL.

  • 'The cable for the PCI Ethernet is not plugged in' error

Hi everyone, I've installed a PCI network card for my G5, 1.8 (later model) single processor, and checked to make sure the card has the Realtek chips.
I've tried the D-Link DGE-528T which is meant to be OSX compatible but to no avail. I get the 'The cable for the PCI Ethernet is not plugged in' message. I've then tried the Pluscom with Realtek 8169 chip and again, get the same message.
I have a good understanding of networking, have installed several drivers, sometimes manually and I've used the terminal to recode the permissions. I've also removed the extension cache file but still no luck. I've also made sure to follow each install path from the package file and remove any older drivers. I've also installed the card in slot 1.
I don't think it is the card. Does anyone have any other ideas I could try?

Where did you get the drivers?
I've heard of people using D-Link routers, and even D-Link's USB/Wireless adapter, but I've never encountered anyone using a D-Link PCI ethernet card. A quick search didn't find any drivers and without that you're not going to get very far. I'm mildly impressed that the OS recognizes the card at all.
