Y510P Flickering screen still after two repair jobs

Hello,
The screen on my y510p began flickering severely just a few months after I purchased it.  The flicker is present on the right third of the screen, and happens on BIOS boot as well as in Windows 8 and ubuntu.
Here is a video of the flicker:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPI_szMcgm8
When I sent the machine in to be repaired the first time, I was told that the screen, screen connector cable, and keyboard were replaced.  The problem was gone for about a week.  Same flicker, in the same part of the screen.
Then it came back.  Worse than before.  I sent it in again, and was told the motherboard was replaced.  Within a few days I began to notice the flicker again. Same flicker, and in the same part of the screen.
So after two weeks of having my computer at the repair facility, I still have the same issue.  I think at this point I'd like a replacement machine, or just a plain return of the computer.  How can I go about fixing this.
Thanks for reading.
-Zak

Hey zacharypch,
You are not the only one who has this problem. It is an issue that happens more often with the Y510P.
Here is the main thread on this forum about the issue:
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Re-Y510P-Screen-Flashing-Flickering-Random-Colo...
Unfortunately the admin's don't post there anymore, and I don't think that Lenovo has officially recognized the issue or has found a solution.
Currently my laptop is also shipped out for repairs. One other person from The Netherlands got his money back after the repair took more than six weeks. Mine has been at the repair center for several weeks (I shipped it the 25th of March), and because of the earlier mentioned thread I doubt they will be able to find a solution...
I just hope they will be able to fix the problem or give me my money back, since I need my laptop for study purposes.
Several "fixes" mentioned in the thread are for a different problem with a flashing backlight. The problem we are having is different.

  • Flickering Screen issue after Mavericks update released on Feb 26, 2014

I own a Macbook Retina display bought in early 2014. After installing the recent Maverick update released around Feb 26, 2014 the display developed flickering problem while scrolling and now the scrolling is not smooth any more. The originally shipped machine did not have this problem. I tested other software including Photoshop and the display still flickers while panning the canvas. I also tried resetting the SMC - System Management Controller but it didn't work along with other attempts of resetting the disk permissions, running a systems cleaner, changing the wifi-router etc.
How to fix this flickering screen issue?

The problem came back lately and I tried this solution and it worked. Go to system settings > power saver > and switch off the Automatic Graphic switching. Not sure if this is a good solution, but it seem to have worked for the time being.

  • Iphone 3GS white screen, still after reset. I DIDNT GET IT WET?

I hit a dirt jump on my bmx bike with my phone in my pocket and fell. Not to hard but i guess hard enough to make the screen turn white ;[. So after googling the issue i found out i should try to reset it. After restating the phone several times the white screen still stayed there. It sometimes had faint Rainbow vertical lines. I can still use my phone because it vibrates and rings when i call it. The touch screen still works to. But the ***** screen is white. So i was thinking if i replaced it with a new digitizer and lcd screen *http://cgi.ebay.com/iPhone-3Gs-full-LCD-digitizer-screen-replacement-/2507962423 17?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3a649ef58d* it might work. Am i right? If i drop 50 bucks on this and its still broken im gonna be ***** pist.
The lcd screen doesn't seem broken, when i disassembled the phone there wasn't any obvious tears or scratches.

how would you recondmend selling it for parts? And do you honestly think its worth a try buying that item i linked in my first post? i can get a gold back housing and gold metal trim thing for cheap. Would those new aditions make it sell for more and if so would i get profit over the money i spent in parts?

  • GE700 flickering screen

    Hi all
I recently got a GE700 which comes with the ATI 5730 graphic card. I noticed that the screen flickers periodically, maybe about once every hour or two. I did the live update on the MSI website for the latest drivers but the flickering screen still happens. Is there another simple solution I can perform or would it be better to take it the the MSI service center? I am just concerned that since flickering doesn't happen often....they might say nothing is wrong with the unit.
    Appreciate any advice on this.
    Cheers

  • Two repairs and still no good! AAAAAARRRRGHH!!!!

So yesterday the local service center takes my laptop to repair it.
    New logic board - again.
New power inverter for the screen
    New Super Drive.
Thanks to help her it was pinpointed that my SD was busted.
SO I'm in the office to burn backups of the Lacie Drive so I can use it for daily backups of the MBP. What happens?
First 4 DVDs the machine spits out and won't accept.
Then it happily burns two (and I can read them!)
Then it spits out another three DVDs it doesn't accept.
So my MBP has been in for repairs twice. It is 7 months old. I'm seriously considering selling it while still under waranty and downgrade to a PB instead. This is seriously doing my head in.
A friend in Canada had his MBP blow up twice. He's going to sell his and get a 17" PB instead of the 15.4" MBP. A mate in UK found his battery swollen and cracked, he's lost keys on the keyboard as well.
Apple and the factories who built these things really went to town with making them crash.
I thought I'd never say this but I'm so disappointed I'm contemplating going back to PC.
    ARGH!

Does anyone actually read Terms & Conditions? I thought it was just one of those annoying pages you scroll to the bottom to tick a box and move on.
Yes, there was supposed to be a question in there but it fell off the screen.
How many repairs does a MAC have to be sent in for before Apple will replace the entire thing?

If you have the exact same problem - take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.  If you have AppleCare call them!

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

Sounds like a hardware issue. Make an appointment at an Apple Store.

  • So, after my iPod touch died, i plugged it into the computer to try and charge it, and now it keeps changing between the charging screen, the apple logo, and a blank black screen, still hasn't charged, and its been plugged in for almost an hour now

    See the not-charging topic of:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
    Have you tried another cable?
Another charging source? Does iTunes see the iPod when you connect to your computer?
Look at the dock connector on the iPod. Look for abnormalities like bent or corroded contacts, foreign material and cracked or broken plastic.

  • Macbook  flickering screen & freeze, then won't boot pass the apple logo

    Hi Guys,
My macbook is driving me insane now. Just recently, my macbook has occasionally flickering screen and freezes after that. Yesterday, when I was watching youtube on fullscreen, it first has flickering screen, then freezes. So I hard booted it pressing the power button. Then, when I try to restart it, it won't boot pass the apple logo no matter what.
    Here's my macbook spec
    2007 Summer Macbook Pro 15"
    Snow Leopard 10.6 OS X
I cracked my screen once, and got a replacement, don't know if that matters.
    I've tried the following:
Safe mood reboot, the progress bar goes about half, then disappears and stalls again.
Booted in verbose mode but it gives a warning message:
'com.apple.driver. internalmodemsupport declares no kernel dependencies; using com.apple.kernal.6.0'.
Booted in Single user mood, and typed fsck for disk repair. After checking said the volume Macintosh HD appears to be ok. But still won't boot pass the apple logo after restart.
Boot with installation disk pressing C at startup. Success after a few try:
Opened Disk Utility and did disk repair (no problem found).
Reinstalled Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.
This time it booted with Finder and everything for a short while, then the screen flicker and freezes again (before I can backup anything!). Then, I can't reboot pass the apple logo again.
When I try to reinstall Leopard OS X 10.5 with installation disk, the macbook seems to try to read the disk, but won't boot. I've got a CD stuck in the optical drive now.
I've tried everything I can find online short of opening it up and send it into the oven for baking! I pray it's not a hardware problem, coz I'm no good at that. (QAQ~~~) Please help me!
Thank you very, very, very much!!!
ps. this is my first post. please let me know if I have missed anything.

Reboot the machine holding the trackpad or left wired mouse button down, that shoudl force eject the 10.5 disk.

Ok, so your attempting data recovery efforts.
First get the 10.5 disk out of the machine, like above.
You can also boot into Single User mode, (command s at reboot) and enter
    /usr/bin/drutil eject
    then type
    restart
Next hold c boot and use the 10.6 disk and create a data recovery drive here on a blank external drive, make sure you clean and polish the bottom of the 10.6 disk, if it's bad you will need to get a new one.
Create a data recovery, undelete boot drive
If your problems continue on this drive even with a clean or new 10.6 disk, it's likely a hardware issue with your Mac, not a issue with the drive.
I suspect a failing sector on your internal boot drive, you installed OS X right over the same spot perhaps, as you were obviously able to boot from the 10.6 disk to install it so it seems the hardware of the Mac appears to be working.
You might have other issues relateing to software perhaps, something your installing or running.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
Once you have gotten your files off the internal drive, you may want to look into doing a Zero Erase with Disk Utility before resintalling 10.6 again fresh install method.

Depends on the price range of the laptop.  However, unless it is a high end gaming laptop and is very new, it is not likely to be economical to fix just the screen.  Expect the repair cost to be a few hundred dollars.

  • Two repairs, problems continue

I have to say I'm very displeased with the entire Apple experience. I purchased this MacBook Pro (Early 2011) back in March and after about one month, memory, SSD, and logic board failed. Calling up AppleCare they suggested to take it to an Authorized Apple dealer (as I have no Apple Store right in my area.) They had it for a week and didn't fix it, although the logic board was "replaced." Then I had to send it into Apple and wait yet another week, to which the logic board (again), all RAM, and SSD were replaced.
Since that time I have STILL seen my graphical issue on my external display (on OS X I will get a static/confetti screen that flashes every now and then and eventually overtakes the whole thing, on Windows thin pink horizontal lines) and more recently with my first FireWire drive the computer will hard freeze when writing large amounts of data to the external drive and the only way to fix it is to hold the power button. The drive however doesn't seem to be faulty as connecting it through USB produces no issues.
I called Apple up to which I went through several levels of support totaling about 40 minutes and then I was hung up on. I waited for 10 minutes for them to call me back (and as of writing now they still haven't.) After that I called back and had to go through the entire process again, only to end up at a "I'm sorry, but it's been 90 days since original purchase so we can not help you, please go to an actual Apple Store or Authorized Retailer and ask them."
TL;DR: Logic board died twice, bad RAM and bad SSD on initial shipment, two repairs and I still have a FireWire and display issue. Calling Apple up I am first hung up on then told I am past 90 days so they can't help.
Any suggestions AT ALL about what to do or how to handle this? I need this computer for college and it is my only one. I bought it to last me throughout, but I hardly have faith in it anymore. Is there a way I can get a replacement or what?
    Thanks.

You got a bad rep. My wife had a similar issue with her Macbook several years ago, the rep flat-out refused to talk to her unless she gave over her CC#.  She explained the issue (bad screen) and the guy refused, twice.  She called later and spoke to someone in their customer relations department and the issue was sorted out there.  The rep we spoke to conceded that the previous rep was completely in the wrong if it is a hardware issue that is covered under our warranty.
Apple's standard warranty includes 90 days of software support and a year of hardware coverage. I'd call back and ask to speak to a supervisor or customer relations, they have the authority to fix issues like this.  Good luck.

  • Yoga Tablet 2 Windows 8 will not boot up, stuck at a flickering screen

I was installing Lenovo's firmware updates from their page for my device and in the middle of installing the BYT Platform Drivers for Windows 8.1, the tablet started went black.  Then it went into some kind of flickering screen like it was trying to turn on and off.  I left it alone and the next morning it was working fine.  But when I came back in the evening, it was completely turned off again.  I tried to turn it on, got the Lenovo logo, then it went into flickering on/off again.  It still will not boot up.  Any suggestions??
