I want to swap the hdd for an ssd, but I don't know too much about hard drives and such.

Also, what steps would I need to take to swap the hard drives? ie: clone or clean install? etc.

In addition to what davidteyuwang have said, you can migrate the OS from the HDD to the SSD if you don't have a Windows 8 disc to clean install the OS into the SSD.
To do this, you need to:
1. Insert the 2.5" SSD into a USB 2.5" SATA enclosure (the SSD will act like an external drive)
2. With the computer ON, plug in the USB SATA enclosure into the computer.
3. Download and install Paragon Backup & Recovery 12 Home (free trial) and migrate the OS from the HDD to the SSD

4. When done, shut the computer OFF, remove the stock HDD amd replace it with the SSD and Windows 8 should now boot from the SSD.

DVD Rom, RAM, and SSD question(s)

I purchased a nice T400 (6475-B14) on Ebay and I have upgraded a number of items on it to get it to where I want it.
I upgraded the OS to W7 Pro, put in a Lenovo 4GB RAM stick (now I have a 4GB and a 2GB), and I swapped out the HDD for an Intel X-25 G2 80GB SSD.
90% of the time the machine is great, however I have run into a few problems and I'm really hoping that someone here can help me.
The first issue, is the fact that every once in a while the machine can't start. I end up having to restore the machine using R&R. I don't know what could be the issue. I've replaced the OS and HDD so I'm not sure what to do next. I am by no means a computer expert, but could the mis-matched RAM (1X4GB with 1X2GB) be causing the problem? I don't mind getting another 4GB stick, but if it won't do anything to fix the issue I don't want to waste the money.
Number two, I'm trying to burn an image recovery disk, but according to the Nero Tool I can't write with my drive (HL-DT-St DVD-ROM DU10N). Do I need additional software? I find it hard to believe that Lenovo would include a drive that only reads and is not capable of writing on DVD or CD, but based on the searches I've done on this forum and others, I can't find any other answer.
Lastly, the SSD seems to be working great (I've only had to restore the system once since installing it, see issue number one), but I see in the Lenovo download site there is an ISO file for SSD's. However since I can't burn a DVD, I can't burn the ISO file. So my question(s) is/are do I really need the software? Can I use my Apple Mac Pro at home to burn the ISO file and then use that disk to install the software?
Sorry for the long, rambling questions, but I have tried to search a number of forums and the internet in general and I haven't been able find the answers.

hello mate,
For your first issue the RAM can be the problem. U can mix different size of RAM but make sure to use DDR3 PC3-8500 or DDR3 PC3-10600 memory. And also the T400 does not support ECC be careful to don't mix ECC and non ECC memory.
For your second question your HL-DT-St DVD-ROM DU10N is just a DVD ROM reader and it's not capable to write any CD or DVD.
I don't know about the software for your SSD but if it's an ISO file for windows you can burn it with a mac it won't make a difference. All discs burned on the Mac work across platforms.

Mac SSD Question

I have a quick question about my mac's hard drive. My buddy gave me a Corsair 128GB Solid State Drive (p/n: cssd-p3128gb2) and wanted to know if it will fit\work with my early 2008 macbook pro (p/n MB134LL/A).
Do you know if it will work or have a website that I could check?

As long as the Corsair SSD is a slim model it will fit/work.

Would a controller card need to be installed for an SSD to work in this machine?
Would the G4 be able to operate in Classic mode with the SSD?
Would the G4 be able to boot into OS 9 with the SSD?
Should the SSD be used only for booting and applications, with user data stored on another drive that does not use SSD technology (such as an ATA or SATA drive)?
Should only 50% of the drive space be used, in order to ensure optimized performance?

Depends on the controller card, but with the linked card, it shouldn't be an issue.

Smaller capacity drives will limit file storage, and keeping OS and applications separate always improves performance, regardless of the drive type.

A controller card removes that limit.

Those controllers will work for and allow use of large capacity ATA drives.

I don't think you'll be able to easily get an answer for either of these questions.....
Your best bet is to contact MSI directly and ask them the question. Either way, #2 will most likely be around 5 years if moderately used (ie you move 10GB of data/day on average).

Changing HDD for SSD QUESTION (U410)

Is any data held on the 500GB drive at time of reset?
Basically my question is, can I simply swap the 500gb HDD for a 250gb SSD without problems of so when I reset the Windows8 install etc will work as usual?
I will use the one click recovery button, and reset everything, except this time on the 250gb SSD.
HELP?

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
First Before you change any setting or setup,
Create a backupdrive first of your WIndows 8 using this Method and let's Name that as your Repair Image.
Download and install belarc advisor to get the product key.
The HDD will have everything, your Windows 8 Os and even the Onekey Recovery Partition, so removing your HDD will render the One click recovery button Not working.
Two ways to install windows 8 back to the blank SSD.
1 You will need an external mount for your SSD or HDD where the scenario should be both SSD and HDD are connected to the computer so you can clone the HDD to your SSD.
(If the clone failed then you can use the Repair Image)
2 You can use a retail copy or any installer copy of Windows 8 and install that to your SSD, if asked for a product key, use the Key extracted using the Belarc advisor.
Any driver needs you can download from Support.lenovo.com
Again The Preloaded HDD Contains the Recovery partition, and the One click feature will look for the HDD where it is saved.

Septre 15 xt ssd question

I've just purchased a Septre 15xt touchsmart. I ordered the 128 ssd drive because no larger was available but the salesman assured me I could upgrade later. In further research I've discovered that the standard sized ssd aren't being used. The machine instead uses a msata ssd. Why is the question. The machine is offered with a small ssd and a normal hard drive. Can a regular sized ssd be added to the machine where the hard drive would have sat?

That I wouldn't know for sure.
I don't see why you couldn't have had a "normal" SSD in place of the mechanical hard drive.
The problem is a normal 9.5mm SSD won't physically fit in your notebook, and since you need to transfer the mounting hardware from the mechanical drive to the SSD, it's a no go.
So, if you were to get a 7.0mm SSD (if there is such a thing), I would say that it would probably work.
The problem is the operating system.
You need to have access to the exact version of the W8 installation media that came with your PC.
That is because with Microsoft Activation 3.0, the W8 product key is embedded in the BIOS, and when you use a DVD to install W8, that key automatically populates the installation, and there is no way anyone knows of to change it.
So, what some folks have wanted to do was to upgrade their PC's to W8 Pro, and they downloaded the upgrade for the special price of $39.99 only to find out that their "regular' (non-Pro) W8 key automatically is entered during the install and invalidates the install. And then they can't change the key like you can with XP, Vista or W7 when activation fails or the product key is invalid.
I imagine that if a customer wants to upgrade from the standard W8 to W8 Pro, they need to use the anytime upgrade method from within the operating system currently installed on their notebook.

U330 Touch - SSD Question

Hi, I recently bought a U330 Touch i7. I hadn't realized that it shipped with a HDD/SSD combination drive. When I booted it up I found the main OS installed on the HDD along with a load of other applications, then on the SSD drive was only McAfee and a load of drivers. The HDD is 500GB (or near enough) and the SSD 25GB. The unit is ST500LM000-1EJ162. THe SSD appears as a separate driver in file explorer but seems to be a partition of the main HDD in disk utility.
I have a couple of questions that I can't seem to find answers to by looking around on the site:
1. Should I just install the applications I am most likely to use straight onto the SSD - so MS Office, Chrome, Unity and a couple of steam games - assuming the benefit on having them on the SSD is going to be worth it.
2. I was told by someone it might be a hybrid drive and the migration of software from the HDD to SSD would be handled by some software. Is it a hybrid drive?
3. Can I actually reinstall the OS directly on the SSD and would the benefit be worth the hassle of the reinstall?
4. If I do re-install can I get the installation files for the OS and associated software that shipped with the machine from Lenovo direct?
Sorry for so many questions, but its my first SSD and there seems to be a lot of conflicting information out there.

You don't want to use the WD as the recovery drive, you want to use a flash drive. Recovery and the factory load should fit on a 16 Gb flash drive. This will be used to refresh or repair the OS if you ever have the problem of not being able to boot.
The WD should be used to backup your current configuration since it will be so large. As you do Windows updates and install more programs and save more files, this backup should be replaced on the WD on a regular basis.
The recovery flash drive will only be used to boot and install the original OS that your machine came with, or to repair or refresh the OS. Then you will use the backup from the WD to put the current OS back on.
Once you make the flash drive, I would test it to make sure it boots and goes into the recovery environment.
Again, the WD will only be used for backing up your current configuration and should be updated regularly.
I've never tried to use an external hard drive as a recovery drive, it might or might not work. The instructions are pretty specific so I doubt that it will

Getting a new MacBook Pro: HDD or SSD question

Hey everyone!
I'm about to get a new MacBook Pro, and there'sone problem I need a little help solving.
I could either get a 500gb 7200rpm HDD at noextra charge, OR I could get a 128gb SSD for an additional $90. I'm slightlyleaning towards the SSD for the general reasons you've all probably heard aboutby now.
Now let me just explain my reasoning here a bit. Ishould say beforehand that I already plan on getting a 1TB external USB drive,regardless of which internal drive I get. So space isn't really the issue.
From what I understand, if I were to buy the MBPwith the 500gb HDD and just buy an SSD separately, that would total me around$220 (the price of a 128gb SSD nowadays). However, if I were to buy the laptopwith the SSD and then buy a 500 gb HDD at 7200 rpm, it would cost me $90 + $70= $160. So I'd be saving money by buying the SSD with the MBP it seems, noteven counting the fact that I could sell the SSD for a higher price than what Iactually bought it for!
I know it sounds like I might already have myanswers, but I basically have three questions:
1) Does that argument make sense to you? As in,is there anything I'm missing or not considering?
2) Does anyone know what brand of SSD Apple shipsin MBP nowadays?
3) I was planning on using my SSD for theOS/applications, and using the 1TB HDD for files/music/movies etc. Is that anideal setup or is there something I'm missing about that as well?

2 - Toshiba but it can always change...
3 - seems ok, iTunes might not really like to have all the files in an external drive but it seems ok...
P.s.- 1TB will not be enough... LOL... try something bigger like a 3TB drive (think future friendly)

MSI X99S XPower AC LGA 2011-v3 M.2 SSD Question

I am planning on purchasing the MSI X99S XPower AC LGA 2011-v3 mobo, using the Haswell Intel® Core™ i7-5820K Processor. I have two questions:
1.) I am going to purchase a crucial 512GB SSD. My question is should I purchase the:
- Crucial M550 512GB SATA M.2 Type 2280 Internal Solid State Drive CT512M550SSD4, or
- Crucial M550 512GB SATA 2.5" 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal Solid State Drive CT512M550SSD1
If I understand this correctly, the first option (M.2) should be noticeable faster?
2.) Any recommendations on Crucial DDR4 memory? I am going to start with 16 GB, so should I get one stick of 16, or 8GBx2? I believe there are 8 slots, and if so, do I need to fill them in groups of two, or does this not matter? Any recommendation for which ones to use to get my 16?

The only difference between the both is the M.2 or SATA 2.5" format. Both are using an SATA interface. The M550 in M.2 format can't utilize the extra bandwith of M.2 as it's controler controler is just SATA. So what you will choose is just up to your format preference.

LGA 2011-v3 is a quad channel platform so get a 4x4 GB kit. Single (one stick) or dual (two sticks) channel will slow system performance.

Leute es ist nicht so wild. Also für den Lenovo y510p braucht ihr eine sog. m.2 SATA Karte, mit anderen Worten eine SATA Karte im ngff format (new generation form factor). Diese m.2 SATAs sind alle Transfertechnisch geschen SATA Karten und unter SATA 3 gibt es sowieso keine soviel ich weiß. Also der heißeste **bleep** vom heißesten **bleep** eigentlich. Auch superklein die Dinger.Aber es stimmt es ist ein wenig verwirrent, denn innerhalb des ngff formats gibt es verschieden Modelle mit verschiedenen Abmessungen und Anschluß-Ports. Für den y510p braucht man diejenige SSD mit einer Länge von 42 mm und nur EINER Schraubenaushöhlung zum festmachen hinten. Es gibt nämlich auch andere mit 42 mm Länge. Aber eigentlich kann man nicht viel falsch machen. Die Preise sind auch schon relativ niedrig inzwischen. Dazu unten mehr! Ich denke, wenn ihr bewandert seit mit Hardware (im Gegensatz zu mir) sollten für euch nur noch solche Sachen eine Rolle spielen wie: Was für Speichermodule wurden verbaut, was ist vom Controller zu halten (sehr sehr wichtig!), wie sind die Benchmarks usw...Ich habe mir vor ca. 7 Monaten eine 128er von MyDigitalSSD gekauft, noch bangend damals, das ich für irgendeine frühreife Technik Lehrgeld zahle, aber es hat sich gelohnt. Die SSD arbeitet ohne Macken bis jetzt, wobei ich aber auch fairerweise sagen muss, dass der Lenovo - wegen fehlender Zeit - minimalst belastet wurde von mir. Ich habe Win 7 64 drauf, alle Speicherintensiven Dienste abgestellt bzw. durch verlinkung innerhalb Windows die persönlichen Ordner auf die 1 TB HDD verschoben. Wobei das auch Quatsch ist eigentlich. Okay die Download Ordner oder große Spiele usw sollte man vll verschieben aber Systemeigene und SEHR nützliche Prozesse wie Indizierung oder Systemwiederherstellungspunkte und so muss so eine SSD Zeit ihrer Lebensdauer eigentlich schon verkraften. Und ich bin sicher das tut sie auch statistisch gesehen. Werd beim nächsten Windows aufsetzen alles eingeschaltet lassen, sowieso ist das nicht mehr wie früher. Das OS erkennt die SSD und behandelt sie schonend indem sie die Zellen ausbalanciert beschreibt und über sie "Buch führt" sozusagen. Oder ihr richtet euch eine RAM Disk im Verbund mit der SSD ein und habt noch schnellere Zugriffszeitenund und und....Also traut euch, ist echt gut angelegtes Geld. GT60 2OD-026US mSATA SSD question. Please help.

I'm getting the GT60 2OD-026US. Currently, it has a 256GB Samsung PM841 mSATA SSD Drive in slot 1 with my OS installed on it. The other two slots are currently empty. The second HD has a 750GB 7200RPM Serial-ATA II installed.
My question. I would really like to install one more mSATA SSD in slot 2 for now, but also slot 3 down the road. I asked the tech where I'm getting it if I could add an Intel 525 256GB in slot 2 and he told me no. He said I needed the same brand and size mSATA installed in slot 2 and the same for slot 3 if I eventually wanted one there too. He wouldn't explain why this would be the case, he just told me that was the way it was. Is this true? Can I only get fill up the other slots with the same brand and size mSATA SSDs?
If it is not true, what mSATA's seem to be the most compatible with the GT60 2OK-026US? I would really like to expand my SSD options.
Any help, information and/or explanation would be greatly appreciated.

MBA SSD Question

I am thinking about switching to the 13 inch MBA but the current SSD is not large enough for me.
Has anyone upgraded the SSD to a larger capacity?
Feedback appreciated.

While I personally haven't done the upgrade, a co-worker of mine put a 240GB model in his 11" MBA (that came with the 64GB) and it was a painless install. The cost prohibitive nature of moving to the 480GB model is probably the biggest limiting factor.

I have had a few MBP's in the past with normal HD. However, I have never used a MBP with an SSD...
I am intending to buy a MBP (15" or 17") and am curious if the normal HD is loud/buzz/issue ? I am spoiled by the silence of the SSD, but the cost is a lot, so if the newer MBP's have improved HD's then maybe it will be ok..
Any one have any experience with both SSD and normal HD's on a MBP?
Also, any issues for the 17" I should know about?

I had the new MBP (late 2011 and early 2011) with both original Apple HDDs and now an original SSD, and I can say that the former two (both the Hitachi 7200rpm and Toshiba 5400rpm versions) had this constant buzzing. I never heard it on my 2009 or 2007 MBPs, so it's something new... not so loud, but having an SSD now, I can say it'd be really annoying to go back to it.
I'd reccomend you buy the MBP with the HDD anyway, and then buy an SSD seperately, change it yourself, and use the HDD as an external drive (in an enclosure you can find on eBay).

Well, you've picked the two of the most popular, reliable and performant SSDs, and as you're only working 3GB/s SATA bus, arguing about which is best is kind of futile as you're not going to get the full potential out of these anyway,
I can't speak for the Samsung, but I have the Crucial SSD and one of the plus points is that it's firmware upgradable on a Mac (albeit by bootable CD that you download and burn yourself). Some SSDs require Windows. Neither will support Trim under OS X natively so you'll still need the Trim enabler.
For me, price would be the decider. However, I would be considering a 500Gb drive if I were you. If you've filled 128Gb, how long will it take you to fill 256Gb?
