Y510p Ultimate Cooling Mods Revealed...Unshroud your cooling fans!

I cant really speak to the quality of fans that Lenovo has chosen for these laptops. If they are poor quality then they will fail like your brothers did. The manufacturer creates the cooling profile to provide adequate cooling for most situations with minimal noise. Noise is always a bigger concern than fan longevity. My script should work on that machine, as long as the program is named Energy Management, and the dust removal start button uses the same hidden name "DustStart" and after the process completes, an "OK" button appears. Does it look like this?

If you own a Y510p, you should take a look under the cooling Vent. A large part of the cooling fans are shrouded by unnecessary plastic that can be removed (carefully) to increase their efficiency.                                                                                                                                                                                                             The air vent/filter is attached to the bottom cover with 16 little metal tabs that are bent over to hold it in place. Just unbend them and pop it out. Take note of where these tabs go through the plastic, you don't want to remove the filter mounting holes! Now mark where you want to cut. Protect the bottom finish with tape and start grinding. I covered the ram vent with tape to prevent material from clogging it and marked the location of a couple mounting holes that I wanted to avoid. The finished result is a beautifully unshrouded set of cooling fans.  I usually leave the dust filter off because I am using it as a desktop with an external monitor. If it did start to fill with dust, this thing is easy to take apart and any place dust could accumulate is easily accessible for cleaning.CAUTION! With the dust filter off, the unshrouded fans are susceptible to damage. Install the filter when transporting! I normally take a very scientific approach to cooling experiments, but I was in a hurry to play a few new games I got and did not record any "Before Temps" but I remember hitting something like 91C cpu before this mod. Now the hottest it gets is 80C(with vent filter off)... Still too hot for my liking, So I wrote the following script to run the "Dust Removal" utility continuously. As far as I know, this is the first time this cooling method has been used on the Y510p. There is no other way that I am aware of (short of hacking into the fan wiring) to control the cooling fan speed. INSTRUCTIONS:****This only works for English at the moment**** I may rewrite it to be universal if it helps someone. To run this, download AutoHotkey (a great program to have if you do any repetitive tasks on the computer) at http://www.autohotkey.com/ Run the program and right click the tray icon (green "H"). Select "Edit This Script" and delete everything and paste in my code (from the spoiler below). Save the file and right click the tray icon again, Select "Reload this Script"                                                                                                                                                                   I programmed it with a hotkey to launch the script. With AutoHotkey running, you can press Control+Alt+F to start the script. This launches the Dust Removal program. The cancel button will not stop the process, only clicking the X in the top corner of Energy Management will stop it. You can leave the script running and whenever you want to start it you can just single click the Lenovo Energy Management tray icon.

  • Agitation by the System built-in cooling fan

Please would you tell me what is wrong with my cooling fan, which suppose to kick on ONLY if system becomes hot or reaches certain temperature. However, my system cooling fan turns itself on whenever I watch online news video broadcast/clips on you tube, apple's movie trailers or doing video conference, even if I just power it on. weird as it is, would only under those activities listed above trigger the Cooling Fan. I would like to know if there's any system adjustment to change setting of that, and what causes the fan to turn on? could it be malfunction? Why only under those activities will the fan turn itself on but not others?
I just reformat it recently, so everything should be neat and smooth. But Gee...when it's on, it's going nonstop and full force until the seconds I quit from those activities!
Thank you for your time, I really appreciate it.
    Sincerely,

I think you are seeing normal behavior. My 1G PowerBook with Tiger will also speed up the fans when temps get to about 140F/60C and that's usually when watching videos. If you don't a "thermometer" program, get the iStat Pro widget here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
It will report temps as well as fas speed so you know what's going on.
Why only under those activities will the fan turn itself on but not others?
I'm not a hardware expert but I know that the video codecs are part of a decoding procedure that involves the main processor and the graphics processor unit (GPU) in the video circuitry. Both make more heat when they work harder, just like the human body. 2D activities like word processing, mail programs and surfing don't take as many system resources.
I believe the fans run all the time, but the base speed is low enough to be nearly silent. I can't hear mine until they speed up when doing videos and the like. I can hear the speed gradually increase speed, and then gradually decrease back to their "silent" mode once I quit programs that use a lot of resources.
I also have a MacBook Pro and, like the PowerBook, its fans start to spin up when I watch videos.

You posted several times?  In case your not aware, this forum is manned by users like you who donate their time trying to help each other.  We're not paid and don't work for Toshiba, so posting once is sufficient.  You should have the Toshiba crap ware called Health Monitor which shows the current temp of cpu as well as the % fan.  See if you can locate it on yours and post back what your values are for idle and under stress.

i got it checked der was no dust or anything found on the fan..
    pls help.

Is your model A215-S4747?  Support site here
If there is no dirt clogging the heat sink fins, and none in the fan blades, then it may be the fan itself is/has failed.  replace fan or attempt to relube existing fan.  search the internet on how to restore a fan by relubing.  I think replace would be better, and what you may ultimately have to do anyway.

  • 3000N100 cooling fan

A couple of days ago I noticed that the cooling fan was running at full speed continuously and blowing out cold air. Without shutting the PC down, I installed 'Speed Fan' and that showed 'Temp 1' at a whopping 76 degC which, clearly, it was not (cold air!). I shut down the PC and it restarted normally and, ever since, the fan has behaved normally and Speed Fan shows Temp 1 at about 48 degC.  Is this a known problem, and should I raise it as a warranty issue?
    Regards
    John

    Dear friends,
According to my experiences,  fan speed will be faster when your CPU increase, in your cases 76c+/- fan should be running faster because the temperature increase, should be normal.
For your cases,  if u facing this problem again, when your temperature is increase, u must checking, are you running some program is in process or is your program is scanning your computer or something else which still in running ? for example antivirus scanning on background or some flash website also can causes your increase of your usage of process)
You can also check, what program is  highly processing, go to task manager (Control+Alt+Del) and under windows task manager u can click Processes tabs, in processes tab u can see CPU column,  short the CPU column, u can see what program is running not stop... usually program will idle when u not process and in idle mode when u did not touch it (if the CPU column 99 = full process , 0=idle) if you some program running 85 continuously even u did not touch it, end that program and u should see the temperature will cool down.
Please notice that if u are running DOS Application in your windows, your temperature will be increase due to the DOS application when running is consume 100% processing process for some dos application.
For some cases, if your memory is not enough for your operating software, it may also can increase your processor usage because convert memory in virtual memory.... you also need to check your memory too... if your memory is out , than conversion to virtual memory will delay your speed because data convert and store at your hard disk and increase usage of your process and increase temperature.
If u have verify all the program is idle and the temperature is still high,  it's may be your hard ware controller problem.

  • Satellite A135-S4527 cooling fan no longer operating efficiently

    Hi,
I have an A135-S4527 and the cooling fan is having issues.
It runs at low speed constantly, as it usually does, but it hardly ever runs in high speed mode.
It clearly needs to as the air temperature is quite high... about the temperature of a typical vehicle's exhaust.
I'm worried it will burn itself up if I don't have it fixed, but I don't know what needs to be fixed.
I use a USB-powered "Chill-Pad" under it at all times to make it run cooler than factory settings, but this problem has only cropped up recently.
I've owned this computer for a little less than two years now.
About 5 months into ownership, the HDD failed and had to be replaced (needless to say, I backup ALL my important files now).
Does anyone have any information on this topic or the normal operation of the cooling fan?
If so, it'd be greatly appreciated.
    Nick

    Hi!
As Akuma said it could be that you have to more dust in the cooling ventilators or that the fan doesnt work properly.
So in your case I would try to clean first by using compressed air spray. This could blow out the dust from the cooling ventilators. You can buy it from a computer dealer.
If it doesnt work you should sent it to an authorized service provider. The technicians can check your notebook and clean it.
Maybe the thermal grease must be renewed and the technicians can do this for you. Its a little bit tricky to disassemble a notebook and you must remove a lot of screws so sent it to an ASP.

  • Compaq Presario model SR5710F hangs/freezes when cpu cooling fan switches to higher speed

Compaq Presario SR5710F with AMD Athlon X2 4450e dual core micro-processor - after the desktop has been on for a little while, I can hear the cpu cooling fan switch to a higher speed. As soon as the fan changes speed, the PC locks up. Power off/on is only option to recover. A precursory inspection did not reveal any noticeable build-up of dust/debris around case fan or cpu fan. Any suggestions?

    Hello DTCothren,
You state whenever your CPU fan goes to a higher speed the computer locks up, is that corret? I will try to assist you with this issue.
I would recommend you open up the hardware diagnostic tool on your computer, and run a full system test. This test does take some time so just allow it to run. If you not sure how to locate the program have a look at this document.

  • GT80 Titan Cooling Fans are on frequently than before

I just purchased the new 18 inch Titan and love it. However, I just started noticing the that the fans that use to come on infrequently and very quiet are now coming on more frequently. I have a cooling fan that sits underneath laptop there is nothing blocking or constricting the air ways. The laptop is turned off longer as I returned to a longer work day, and the temp in the home is in the low to mid 60s.
Is this something I should be worrying about? I have been frequently using the air duster on the laptop. Oh, I have only had the new monster machine for about a month.

Hi, how about updating BIOS and EC firmware to latest version?
Also maybe you have installed some resident programs in the background? Anti-virus and Windows auto update would also work in the background.
You can try to recover the OS to factory default and observe its status.
Using Shift feature to switch to Green mode might do some help when you only at office mode.

  • Satellite A215-S4757 - Battery life and cooling fan issue

    Hello everybody,
I would like to ask a few questions abou my system: first of all, the cooling fan is running in my opinion too often: almost continuously, with brakes of 2-3 seconds. Is this normal?
I have my laptop since august last year and I think it shouldn't be a problem of dust, because it is too "young" for that and I don't live in a "dusty" appartment...
Anyway, I think the "almost allways running fan" problem appeared about 2 months after I purchased the notebook. I have installed "Speedfan" and I see "HD0" temperature is increasing from about 30deg immediately after I start the laptop, to about 39deg after 1 hour.
But the curious thing is that so named "Core" temperature is oscillating from the beginning between 45deg and over 52deg! The fan starts each time the core temperature is rising over 50deg and stops when the temperature reaches 45deg. Is this behaviour normal???
Is the core temperature of 45-50deg normal? I am just using my laptop for Internet browsing, e-mails, etc., no complex 3d games!
The second thing is that the battery life is (and was from the beginning) not spectacular: it lasts max. 1,5 hours with wireless on, but normal use of laptop (not playing dvd's or something like this). Is this normal? If yes, is it because of the amd turion 64x2 processors?
Please help me with some advices / opinions.
P.S. I've bought my Toshiba as I was on trip in USA (NY).
Thank you very much in advance.
    Conrad

    > I would like to ask a few questions about my system: first of all, the cooling fan is running in my opinion too often: almost continuously, with brakes of 2-3 seconds. Is this normal?
Im an owner of a Satellite A210. Its similar to the A215. The A210 is a European model and the A215 belongs to the US notebook series.
I have noticed the same on my A210 and I think its normal behavior.
    > But the curious thing is that so named "Core" temperature is oscillating from the beginning between 45deg and over 52deg! The fan starts each time the core temperature is rising over 50deg and stops when the temperature reaches 45deg. Is this behavior normal???
The CPU temperature of 40-60deg is nothing unusual.
The temperature could arise up to 70-80degrees while playing a game. So dont worry about the temperature.
The cooling modules are controlled by BIOS. The fan table is stored in the BIOS and it contains informations about temperature limits and the cooling usage.
If a certain temperature level was reached the cooling module starts to rotate with a certain speed.
Now I would like to say something about the notebooks battery life time
Generally the battery life time depends on the notebooks usage.
While playing games or watching movies the battery would discharge much faster.
Anyway, your notebook was equipped with high-performance devices and as far as I know the Vista was preinstalled on this series. Both factors (high performance devices CPU and GPU) + Vista OS need a lot of battery power. Vista needs more notebook resources as the Win XP and therefore notebooks with Vista OS run shorter on battery as the notebooks with preinstalled Win XP.
Last but not least you have to know that there are different battery models A stronger battery with higher *mA* value would help to run the notebook longer using the battery power.
Hope I could clarify this question.

  • Vaio E series - Cooling Fan noise

Hello, 2 weeks ago I bought Vaio E series.  I was very excited that I will have Vaio laptop. It was like my dream wish. According to our standard, we are poor country and the Vaio laptops are extremely expensive. But, Vaio laptops are know for high quallity laptops and great support from Sony. So, I bought it. I am very satisfied with the quality. But I have one problem. The cooling fan is making a lot of noise even the CPU usage its 10 %. I have the latest BIOS version. So, Sony I am expecting from you to release a new BIOS update fixing this issue.. I dont want to start thinking that I pay a lot of money only for the name. With that money I could buy a more powerful machine but I put my trust in Sony. The model number is Model # SVE17122CXB. PS. Don't say that I should go to service center because they can do nothing. I am an IT student and I know how this stuff works. And I dont  want the fact that the new laptop will be repaired. So the only solution is BIOS update. Sony, do not make me regret that I have chosen you before other brands.
I am expecting a positive feedback.

    t0n1,
Engineering came back saying that fan speed control is not supported on the SVE17 hardware so there is no way on this model to control the fan speed manually.  I apologize for suggesting this initially, at the time I did not have your exact model at my desk but instead I had a very similar one (SVE14A)
I also received two SVE17 notebooks and both have extremely quiet fan (especially if CPU usage is very low).  Loud fan noise is not a characteristic of this model.
If you feel that the fan on your SVE17 is abnormally loud, then you have two options at this point:
    1) You can make a audio/video recording of this fan noise and post it for me to review; after that i can try to give you more suggestions or let you know if this is in fact normal or not.  At this time you do not mention that your computer is shutting off, so the unit is not overheating.
    2) Or you can consider service.  (I realize you initially refused service in your original post, but sometimes some new thermal sheets or re-seating of the heat-sink can address these issues.

  • Yosemite download issues related to cooling fan

I have spent over 10 hours on the phone with tech support, and 4 days attempting to resolve a download problem on my MBP.  After upgrading to Yosemite I attempted to update my primary software package for work and the download continues to stall during download.  Apple care told it was the Software's company's fault, the software company pointed me back to Apple.  Apple pointed me back to them and they pointed back to Apple - I just want what I have paid for to work as advertised.
Here is where I am at now:  I will begin the download and it will progress like normal, then the cooling fan comes on and the download with stop.  Several times the progress of the download, in percentage, actually shows to decrease - meaning it goes backwards somehow.  I cancel the download and restart the software the cooling fan stops, I restart the download and after a random amount of time the coolings fans start again and the download stalls.  I know that this sounds very unrelated but since I noticed this connection it has done it every time since and I have went through this process at least 12 times since first making the connection.
I have followed all of the steps from Apple's senior advisor in checking settings and troubleshooting.  She told me that it was the software's problem.  The software company tells me their servers are good and then shows me the mountain of reports from Yosemite users that are having similar issues.  Meanwhile I'm stuck with a $2500 dollar MBP and a $3000 software investment that I can't use for the purpose that I bought them.  When I told Apple care about the fan issue they inferred that I was crazy to think that the cooling fan could be connected - maybe I am.

It's not clear to me if this is an issue within the software package such as with a download feature within a particular software package or software distribution mechanism, or if this is something weird with OS X Yosemite that's causing a problem elsewhere that's effecting this download.
Who is the third-party vendor, and what is the package?  Is there a posting from the vendor pointing to the issue?
Has the third-party vendor plans to offer an alternative download path, which would seem reasonable for a case such as this with a "mountain of reports" involved?
Given your long discussion with the vendor and with Apple, have there been specific suggestions you've tried and found haven't worked?  Otherwise, we're just going to repeat some of those.
The cooling fan gets involved when something goes compute-bound or otherwise starts looping, either due to a design problem or due to a bug.  Adobe Flash Player tends to spool up the fans, for instance.

  • RADEON 9800 cooling fan

I have a RADEON 9800 Pro Mac Edition 256MB in my QuickSilver 2002 mounted in the AGP slot. The 9800 cooling fan is very loud (grinding sound) after a cold startup then gets quiet after it warms up. I have looked at third party cooling fans for this RADEON and I have found the Zalman v700cu and the Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer 1, Rev. 2 that seem to be compatible. From the images of these two coolers it looks like the two mounting screws that project out the back of the garphic card are very close to the lower memory slot in my QuickSilver. I don't use the PCI slot next to the AGP slot so I know the coolers will be OK there.
My question is, has anyone actually tried one of these coolers in a QuickSilver 2002 and is there enough clearance between the mounting posts on the cooler and the memory card to prevent them from touching?

ATI fans are notoriously bad (read that as cheap). You will know the fan is going bad when you hear a loud whine or grinding noise after a cold startup or during heavy use. The fan went bad on my 9800 Pro 256 after just 5 months. I had to send the card to ATI for repair - nearly 3 weeks to get the card back. The replacement ATI fan started making noise after another 90 days. I can't see doing this on a regular schedule for the three year warranty term so I replaced the stock fan with an Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer 1, Rev. 2. It's easy to install. So quiet that I can't hear it run and my computer case and power supply fans run slower and with less noise than ever before due to the Arctic fan venting warm air out of the computer.
The Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer 1, Rev. 2 installed perfectly with no modifications and minimal effort. It has a 6 year warranty. I consider this modification the best thing you can do to protect the $250 (or whatever you pay) investment you make with the RADEON card. It's better than waiting for the stock fan to fail and cause your 9800 to melt down. Technically installing the Arctic fan voids the ATI warranty but I believe I could reinstall the old stock fan if the card needs other warranty repairs without anyone noticing the switch was ever made.
So your answers are yes and yes although I never had the monitor problem you describe. The ATI card is a good choice - keep it then download and install the latest drivers from the ATI/AMD web site and do yourself a favor and buy an Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer model for your card. Install it when you start to hear the stock fan going bad. You will be glad you did.
PS - many thanks to FangSuede for his excellent advice given to me.
