Yaboot Boot FAILURE (on PPC Mac) ????!!?!

I am able to (seemingly) successfully install ArchLinux on my PPC Mac. The problem starts after I have installed everything and reboot the system. Here is what happens:
Everything starts fine, until I get into Yaboot. This is EXACTLY what is says:
Welcome to yaboot version 1.3.14
Enter "help" to get some basic usage information
boot: Linux
please wait, loading kernel...
/ht@0,f2000000/pci@5/k2-sata-root@c/k2-sata@1/disk@0:7, /boot/vmlinux26: No such file or directory
boot:
What did I do wrong? Any ideas?
Not sure if this helps, but here is my partition scheme for ArchLinux:
sda5-->bootstrap->800.0K
sda6-->swap->3.0G
sda7-->root->7.0G
Also, not sure if this is at all related, or if it is even a problem, but here is something that I found weird, that happened during installation (but, this is based on my very limited knowledge of archlinux, so this may be totally normal for archlinux):
During the installation process of arch linux, I have to "install kernel". After that installs (again, seemingly successfully), I am prompted to check a file in nano. The file is called "kernel126-fallback.conf" and this file is located at "/mnt/etc/mkinitcpio.d/kernel126-fallback.conf" . What I thought was odd (again, this may be totally normal) is that this file is COMPLETELY blank.
Is this normal? Does this have anything to with my problem listed at the top of this post (if this has nothing to do with the problem on the top of this post, than you can completely ignore this paragraph) ?
P.S.  Don't forget, I am installing the PPC version of ArchLinux
Also, please keep responses as simple, and as step by step as possible
Thanks for the help,
Ben

Yeah, sorry about that. I first posted in the installation section. I then found out that there was a section called "Arch64 & Other Architectures" and I though that that was a much better place for my particular question. Won't happen again.
Do you have a possible solution for my question?
**********PLEASE POST ANSWERS TO THIS THREAD AT THE THREAD LOCATED AT: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=101896
Thanks,
Ben

  • What r all the boot loaders for ppc macs

i need a boot loader for ppc macs something like this
    But thats my intel macbook
if anyone has any idea plz reply
    thanks mike

    Hi, Klaus.
    Klaus's method:
Selecting the boot partition can be postponed until the code common to all OSes is executed: firmware in chips, if, 'Alt' pressed, pause and display screen in NVRAM; then execute the first byte on the first boot partition pointed to by the partition table on the drive selected in NVRAM (changed by 'system preferences').
    Boot Loader:
Firmware executed, then first byte on default boot drive. This has 'boot loader' with text menu offering OSes. Pause. Marks boot partition on selected drive, and sometimes copies first record of this boot partition over itself (the boot loader) and changes the CPU pointer back to first byte of new boot drive (chain loading). Very clean.
Other methods 'shoot' to permanent boot loader (with spiffy graphic menu shown) and back. All that matters is that first byte on drive where OS should continue is eventually the first byte of the OS you want.
Snow Leopard (HFS+) and GNU/Linux (ext3) make a qood pair. Both can read and write HFS+ natively. Still, if you kept eMac with Ubuntu and Firewire cable, drive damage on either could be fixed.

  • Boot Failure iMac G3 400MHz, goes on firmware mode :S

    Hello everyone,
I recently bought a second hand iMac G3, 400MHz processor and 128mb ram, 10gb harddrive. I've always wanted a Mac just for the fun of it, and i finally got it. I dont think this imac is dead, but i'm having trouble on boot. It is not booting the traditional way, it is going down to firmware boot.
    It gives this info:
    MacOS: Boot Failure! (0xF3C481F6)
Mac OS: parcel initialization failure - bad checksum
Then i have 2 choices from the firmware for booting or shutting down 1. mac-boot command and 2. shut-down command.
So, i give it the mac-boot command; in starts showing the mac face for a few seconds, then it displays this message below of it:
    /pci@f2000000/mac-io@17/ata-4@1f000/disk@0:5,\\:tbxi
after maybe a minute it finally displays the face and ? symbol; typical of not finding the system. Problem is that, even starting the imac with the system disc on it and pressing "c" at bootime, it still goes to the firmware thing...
Is there a way to tell the imac "hey dont boot at firmware, boot at cd!!" ??
Oh, by the way...during the "/pci@f2000000/mac-io@17/ata-4@1f000/disk@0:5,\\:tbxi" message I can still press the "alt" key and it shows me the retry arrow, the system harddrive labeled "Lorelai's comp", the system CD and the straight right arrow.... i try clicking on the harddrive and also on the CD icons to try to boot, but it only refreshes the screen changing from the traditional blue/purple background to a red-ish background and arrow/drive's buttons get funny colors...
i dont know what is going on....i dont think the imac is dead....i guess it has to do with that firmware booting default thing...
    please help....
    thanks in advance.

    Hi again Kenichi,
Question: I've done that procedure yesterday, but i pressed the button for only 1 second 1 TIME ....can i make the procedure again despite if i did it 1 time before? or doing it again will crash the iMac forever?
About the black screen i told you before, here's the thing...if i place a battery on it and reset the nvram via keyboard commands or firmware commands, at the restart then is when the imac goes on black....BUT if i remove the battery, leave it there for a minute or 2, and then power it on, it goes to the firmware state again, ofcourse with good video on it....i dont think it has a video problem...but i dont understand why when making the reset procedures with a battery on the iMac this black-non starting screen keeps going...
    Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
That's because the Boot Camp volume was created, but your Mac hasn't been set up to start automatically from the Windows disc. Insert the Windows DVD and press C key while your Mac is starting to start Windows installation.
If you want to make sure that everything is correct, open Boot Camp Assistant and choose the option to remove Windows 7. Then, open that application again, select the option to install Windows 7 and you will be able to install Windows as usual

  • External HD will not Boot PPC Mac

I have a ppc mac running OS 10.5.8 and an external hard drive, formatted  with Apple Partition Map and containing a clone of the ppc mac. Using the firewire interface, this external drive will not boot the computer.
Any suggestions on troubleshooting this problem would be greatly appreciated.

A few drives don't support booting a Mac at all.
If you have a Western Digital model, here's a list showing which ones should, or should not, boot Macs: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1787
If you have another make, check with the maker.

  • External Clone will not Boot PPC Mac

I have a ppc mac running OS 10.5.8 and an external hard drive, formatted  with APM and containing a clone of the ppc mac. Using the firewire interface, this external drive will not boot the computer. The external HD box is an OWC Mercury Elite Pro containing a 2 TB Seagate Barracuda HD with 2 partitions, one partition containing the clone.

Does it only happen using FireWire? Have you checked if the external disk has got an Apple Partition Map? Note that it's required to start a PowerPC-based Mac.
To check that your external disk is using Apple Partition Map, connect the external drive, open Disk Utility and choose the external disk in the sidebar. Then, look at the bottom of the window and see what says next to "Partition Map Scheme"

You can try DiskWarrior (about $100).
If that doesn't work, and if you have no backups at all, you might need to send your hard drive to Drive Savers or a similar service. It will cost a lot of money to get the data back, I'm sorry to say.

  • Mac Mini XP Boot Failure

Being a legacy Mac user (since system 6) I found the idea of booting into windows a little creepy at first. But, I just had to see if I could play some of my favorite PC games (side note - GMA950 is horrible) Anyway, All was well for the first few months - I was able to dual boot with no problems. Then a couple of weeks ago, when I attempted to boot into XP, I simply got a grey screen. I've tried the "Option" command of course, and I just tried that "ReFit" sourceforge utility and I just get a grey screen. (It doesn't even get to the ReFit EFI boot manager)

  • Need to upgrade memory in ppc mac mini

Does anyone know of a step by step guide with pictures to installing memory in a ppc mac mini? Need to upgrade to a gig to use some graphics software. Thanks,
    Steve

In sleep mode (STR) the RAM has to be refreshed to
keep the memory content, so the more you got the more
power will be consumed on this.
Having less ram will therefore benefit battery life
    in sleep mode.
This is only of concern to portable users of course, and the additional RAM has barely any impact on power demand whether from mains-power or battery. Some admittedly, but not much. Nor would it be all that easy to tell what drain it caused since there are other variables involved with battery drain rates too, such as ambient temperature.
There is still room for improvement in whatever
algorithm it is that determines when "inactive"
memory is released. Paging frequently happens after
copying large files since all memory is in use and
"recently" so, even if this use is one where the
content is NOT likely to be needed again.
The much hyped idea that "old" inactive memory is
being released when more is needed I find it
difficult to confirm, or paging would not be needed.
Simply caching EVERYTHING does not in my mind count
    as an "intelligent" algorithm..
As much as this may be valid, there is no way the user is able to change the algorithm - it's part of the operating system. As such, the user can really only take such steps as may be possible to improve the working of the system - one significant such step being adding RAM.
This can be cleared up by running "repair
permissions" in DU, since it seems to release much of
the inactive RAM. It would be much better to have a
small utility to do this, though, if making the OS
more intelligent is not an option.
Running disk utility may be an effective method of resolving memory allocations etc, but it then places the onus on the user to monitor the system and manually activate a process. Part of the appeal of MacOS to many people is that it removes much of the onus users of other operating systems feel is placed on them to keep tuning the system - activities which detract from the use of the system.
Ultimately, I have to say that I have never found the need to do anything of that sort. I do use MenuMeters (a very neat little app to place system monitoring tools in the menu bar and which uses barely any CPU overhead to do so) to watch the status of my system, but only as an occasional troubleshooting aid when I'm testing software or experimenting with the system. That is about as far as I go with anything other than using the system. Certainly, I've not found any need to perform the sort of tasks that are often being recommended, and even the systems I run 24/7 remain efficient in operation.
I can say that while my G4 was running off a 5400rpm drive, increasing RAM from 768Mb to 1.5Gb quite dramatically improved performance of both 10.4 and 10.2 but had little benefit in OS9 (all booting from separate drives). The effects were rather less noticeable after swapping out to 7200 drives instead.

  • External boot up disk PPC versus Intel

I am currently travelling with an external HD that is a clone of my G5 PPC iMac. It has a fully functioning OS 10.4.11 on it and I can use it as a boot up disk.
I normally stay with a friend who has a PPC Mac, and can boot up using this HD so that it 'appears' as if I am on my G5. Then when I get home, I synchronise the HD with the G5 to bring the latter up to date.
This time I am staying with another friend who has an Intel Macbook. I am unable to boot up using the external HD. Is there any way round this so that I can somehow work with the external HD as the disk I am using and altering while I work?
    Thanks, Nick

For various reasons, I have not been able to have a go at this yet, but will have an opportunity to do so in early June.

Thanks for this clarification. I don't have Leopard (yet).
    BDAqua
The Intel Mac owner, who has OS 10.4.11, is certainly willing to set up a new account for me. When I travel, I wish to access three essential applications, Mail, Address Book and Safari on my OS 10.4.11-PPC-formatted external drive, so that I 'see' MY e-mails, e-mail addresses, and bookmarks. I assume that if I boot up using the Intel Mac and go into my new account on it, I will see no data at all for these three applications, unless there is some way I can import them from the external drive. Is this possible and if so how? Or perhaps the question should be rephrased as whether it possible to 'sync' the Mail, Address Book and Safari applications between the external drive and my account on the Intel Mac HD?
I'd be grateful for any further advice. Thank you.
    Nick

  • Is it possible to start intel mac in target mode from ppc mac ?

    Hello all,
Is it possible to start intel mac in target mode from ppc mac ? If so does using target mode make ANY change at all to the target disk if user doesn't voluntariliy write stuff to target disk ?
    Thanks in advance !

Yes, you can, but with some notes. Braby sent some data, I add some other.
Target Mode has two basic roles:
    1. to turn a mac into an external drive and/or external optical drive (if it has one, until Air era, all had); you may use this way if your internal optical drive is damaged and you wish to use the optical unit of the other mac; or use it as a simple external disk for backup purposes or else.
    2. to boot from a such-booted mac.
#1 is usable with any two macs disregarding whether they are both PPC, both intel, or combination PPC-intel, as the behavior is like any external disk drive or external optical drive.
#2 is impossible if you want to boot the other mac, they must be both intel or PPC, as you cannot use an intel-based mac as a boot mac for the other ppc-mac, and vice-versa.
So said and clarified, you may use, but not if you intend to boot the other one if you wish to use it for various purposes implying boot.

  • Gray screen of death ... macbook boot failure

Three weeks old and getting the gray screen of death. Power up works but MacBook just keeps trying to read a video disk I left in the ROM drive. Gray screen with nothing else (no processing circle, no apple logo, just a plain gray screen). I could hear the rom drive cycling.
I worked with support via telephone and their solutions failed also:
    1. power up, hold down the eject button (nada)
    2. power up, hold down the mouse button (nada)
    3. power up, hold down the apple key, the cntl key, the P and the R keys for two chimes (got the two chimes but nada)
Now it chimes when i start up but still sits there cycling the cdrom which has a movie disk in it.
The support rep asked me if there was a small extraction hole by the drive. HELLO: are you really Apple ??? On the new macbook?
The MacBook was delivered with 10.4.8. Wanting the large 10.4.9 update on CD for any future need, I downloaded the 10.4.9 intel combined update (larger than the other choice) and went with that not knowing which to use. However this was three weeks ago and the computer has been perfect. my session yesterday was perfect but I did 'brag' on the new macbook when a friend saw me using it. why does bragging cause boot failures? Murphy?/??????// HELP.
Black MacBook intel core 2 duo 120gb drive 2 gb memory   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

My apologies to everyone if I raised an alarm. The hardware (i.e. the MacBook) is fine and the problem was that I am a new user. I have to say that Apple Support was unprepared to address the issue but I did resolve it myself by accident. Here is the resolution:
I looked up the SMC reset instructions on the Apple Support site as a next step and the instructions said to try 3 things before doing the SMC:
    1. Force Quit (Option - Command - Escape)
    2. Restart (Control - Command - Power)
    3. Force Shutdown (hold down pwr button for 10 seconds
As a new user I could not know that the key with the Apple was the Command key, but I guessed since the words control and option were called out, it had to be the Apple key with the Squiggle.
I did each step but nada. I did get a different alert tone (lower pitch) after doing step 3. Each time I turned the computer off.
I then started over and tried again turning on the macbook from being off each time. I did step 1 and turned the machine off and then did step 2 and the computer came alive.
The system is just like I left it and the rom drive works fine. Again, my apologies to all you macbook users for raising any alarms. We are new to using Apple and have much to learn. I did not have any cheat sheets to work from so it took time. Many thanks for the responses.

  • PPC Mac restore from GUID Partition on exterior HDD?

In order to provide a bootable backup for my Intel iMac, I plan to reformat my external firewire/USB HDD (Maxtor OneTouch II) into several partitions using the GUID partition scheme. My question is whether I can use the remaining partitions on the Maxtor to do non-bootable backups of my G4 and iBook computers. With respect to my iBook, for example, if I clone its hard drive to one of the Maxtor GUID partitions, can I then, booting from the iBook installation disk, use DU to restore it back to my iBook as a fully functional system? My objective is to avoid buying a second external hard drive to support the PPC Macs.

    Hi-
It's best to just get a retail version of Leopard for your PPC machine, especially since asking how to use the install discs from one machine, which are licensed to only one machine, is asking someone to tell you how to violate the EULA.

  • Burned DVD works on PPC Macs, but not Intel

We have two identical copies of a burned DVD. When we insert it into one of the two intel Macs we have (MacPros), it spits them back out or gives read/write errors. When we put the DVD into either of the two PPC macs we have, they mount without issue.
Booting to an external gives the same error, so it's not a software issue it seems.
Has anyone else seen this before? Thank you for any help!
    Message was edited by: socokid

Are these just data discs? Or are you trying to use them for booting the computers? If it is the latter, Intel boot discs cannot boot PPC and vice versa. If it is the former, it's definitely a bizarre sounding problem. Unless, of course, when you say "when we instert it into one of the two intel Macs.." you literally mean only one of the Mac Pro's gives you problems then it's probably just a faulty drive. But if both give you problems, well, then it's still a bizarre problem.
Try feeding us with more details. OS versions, disc types/formats/contents, DVD-R drive models, whatever you can think of to help us help you.
