Yaboot on mini-ppc

hi,
  I try to install archlinux-ppc on my mini-ppc /dev/hda4
I have kubuntu already running on /dev/hda3 OK
I have this yaboot.conf:
boot=/dev/hda2
device=/pci@f4000000/ata-6@d/disk@0:
partition=3
root=/dev/hda3
timeout=50
install=/usr/lib/yaboot/yaboot
magicboot=/usr/lib/yaboot/ofboot
enablecdboot
enableofboot
image=/boot/vmlinux
        label=Linux
        read-only
        initrd=/boot/initrd.img
image=hd:4,/boot/vmlinux26
        label=arch
        root=/dev/hda4
        partition=4
        initrd=/boot/kernel26.img
        read-only
but arch load kernel and then have kernel-panic...... fstab seems OK
can you help me ?
thankyou

rayjgu3 wrote:im not familiar with ppc but i do know arch by default the naming scheme of devices do not include /dev/hda
so i would say try /dev/sda  watch text during boot you should see something saying similar to
mknod /dev/sda b 8 3  or the like if so you need to change fstab
maybe this helps
No, in fact that does not. PPC does not come with an ide chipset that has a pata driver for it yet.

  • Running OS 10.5.x on Mac Mini (PPC-based, PowerMac10,2)

    A friend of mine has a Late 2005 Mac Mini (PPC-based, PowerMac10,2). She currently runs OS 10.4.11 and the Mac is running fine.
    I have a few questions:
    [1] Can this machine run OS 10.5.x?
    [2] Even if it can, in terms of speed and running application, is it a realistic thing to do?
    I want her to use a program called RapidWeaver on her Mac Mini. But, its system requirement is OS 10.5. That's one of the reasons why I am posting this question.

    Oh, yes, thanks so much for mentioning that! My friend has a printer that came (I think) free with her Mac Mini back when she purchased the computer. I am now looking at the System Profiler file that I asked her to generate, and under Printers, I see Lexmark Z25-Z35 and Stylus CX4200. I believe that the Lexmark is the wireless printer that she prints to.
    Thanks again for alerting me to this!!

  • Imac mini ppc version suddenly stopped working

    Hi all,
    my mac mini worked fine until last saturday.
    Since this time my Mac switches off immediately without any recognizable reason.
    I can get him working, if I do the following steps:
    - unplug the mac from the electricity mains, without doing that, the mac starts never again
    - wait some minutes
    - plug the mac mains cable back
    - switch power on, the mac starts again
    Mac remains working until he switches off automatically
    There are no informations in the log files.
    I have also run the hardware diagnostic from disk 1.
    All tests are fine. No hardware problems found. All looks good.
    What can cause the problem ?
    imac mini PPC Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi Stefan,
    My first instinct here would be to advise re-setting the P-RAM. In order to do this, follow your procedure of unplugging the mini from the mains and leave it for some time. Once you power up your mini, immediately hold down the keys "OPTION + APPLE + P + R" until you hear the startup chime twice. Once your mini has chimed twice, them P-RAM has successfully been reset and you should be able to use your mac without any problems. I will however, advise that you immediately repair permissions in the disk utility and check your hard drives smart status which can also be found by verifying the hard drive in the disk utility.
    Fingers crossed, everything will work out fine, however if the problem does re-occur then I can not really be of any further assistance and another member of the discussions may well solve your problem in two minutes!
    Hope that I may have been of help

  • Install library receipts from a MacBook Pro onto a Mac Mini PPC

    I have a pay per Mbyte internet connection at home, but unlimited internet where I work. I am hoping to install updates on the MacBook Pro at work and keep the receipt .pkg files and install them on the Mac Mini PPC at home so I don't have to pay for the large file size. Any idea if this will work?

    you don't need the receipts; you need the updates themselves. just download them at work, store them on external media, and install at home. assuming you aren't violating any "acceptable use" policy at work, you'll be fine.

  • Mini PPC 1.42 w/10.4.6 issues

    I've got a Mini PPC 1.42 GHz w/10.4.6 and 1 GB RAM booted from a 250 GB Firewire HD with Oxford 911 chipset.
    I removed the OEM 80 GB HD to use in my iBook, and replaced it with the 15 GB iBook HD that I use as a repair volume, scratch disk, and Classic installation.
    I've recently been having some "issues" related to the Firewire booting where I hear the HD "click" off and spin down while the System is actively booted from it. The cursor usually still moves, but often it quickly becomes the spinning beachball, and the System is otherwise completely frozen. If I leave it, or this happens when I'm away, often it will eventually have a panic screen and require a restart, but this is at least several minutes or more.
    I can revive the frozen System by hot-cycling the power & plug of the Firewire HD and after a few seconds the beachball stops and everything snaps back to normal as if nothing occurred. I have System Preferences>Energy Saver>Sleep set to Never for everything, and also No HD spindown. It still "clicks" off and spins down.
    I've recently heard that since my Mini shipped with OS 10.3.7 that makes it a "Rev. 1" Mini, and that my problem may be related to the fact that the 10.3.7 that shipped with the Mini was not the standard edition but a "special" Mini edition? I was told that since I've used a clean install of Tiger 10.4 rather than upgrading the OEM 10.3.7 System I'm now missing special software that is specific to the Rev.1 Mini hardware? I've looked in the installer CD using Pacifist, but there are thousands of files & folders, and I have no idea which are the missing Mini specific ones? Downgrading to 10.3.7 and then reinstalling Tiger over the top seems like an incredible hassle.
    Does anyone know if the Rev.1 Mini had "special" software, and if so, what specific files varied from the "standard" 10.3.7? I'd love to simply extract the few Mini specific files & folders and "fix" what I've got.
    I'm not too happy about this. I'd have thought 10.4 would have "all" the Mac files necessary for a clean installation rather than an upgrade over the OEM software.

  • Cannot connect Mini PPC 1.42 GHz to Panasonic Plasma via DVI-to-HDMI-Cable.

    Saw this question many times but never found a real Solution for that...
    I'm trying to connect an old Mac Mini Power PC 1.42 to my Panasonic Plasma. Using the DVI out and an Adapter to HDMI.
    In the Monitor-settings, I can see that the PPC found the TV. It is shown as "Panasonic TV" in the settings when I connect the cable. This, I can see while using Teamviever on my iPad, because the TV stays black. The TV does not seem to receive any signal actually.
    Does anybody know what to do? I can't imagine there's no solution.
    Please help!!

    Unbelievable but true! I've managed to solve the issue yesterday on my own.
    For those who are interested and didn't find a forum that helped much, here is an easy manual:
    Boot with normal Monitor using a normal DVI cable.
    Start Teamviewer so you can follow the next steps on an iPad, iPhone etc.
    Unplug normal monitor.
    Now use a DVI cable with HDMI at the other end.
    Plug in Panasonic Plasma TV by using the above mentioned cable.
    Now the plasma stays black, no signal arrives. Look at the iPad via Teamviewer and open monitor settings.
    This should show that the Panasonic has now been found.
    Switch the resolution to 1280x720.
    Tataaaaa!
    The Plasma TV now proudly shows the content of your Mac Mini PowerPC. Play with further settings in order to optimize the display width etc. Set the TV to 16x9 manually.
    Enjoy!

  • Mac mini ppc finder in infinite loop

    I have a ppc mac mini, a few days ago after logging in the finder seems to wig out. It flashes to the front. If I try to open a finder window it flashes on the screen then it is gone, it comes back for a second and gone again. To do anything on the computer is near impossible.
    I have tried booting from disc and it does not like any of the 3 I have. I tried booting in safe mode and it sits at the apple with the gray wheel spinning endlessly.
    I can access the hard drive through my network and am in the process of grabbing all important files off.
    Does anyone have any ideas that I should try?

    Can you tell us if the mini actually boots so that you can reach the finder and desktop? If it can, but it hangs at the Apple logo on the grey screen during a safe mode boot which your first post suggests, then this is an unusual problem indeed!
    Have you rescued all your data from the system now?
    If the mini is as unresponsive as you suggest, and given that it's not entirely clear what symptoms you are describing, it may be rather difficult to run any of the normal software to try and diagnose this.
    However, there are a few things to try before going any further.
    First, reset PRAM. This is the area of memory which the Mac users to store basic settings.
    To reset it...
    -Shut down the computer.
    -Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in the next step but one.
    -Turn on the computer.
    -Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    -Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    -Release the keys.
    You'll know it worked if you can see the desktop after the system starts up because the clock and date will have reset too.
    If that doesn't help, try a PMU reset:
    To reset the PMU
    -Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    -Wait 10 seconds.
    -Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
    -Let go of the power button.
    -Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.
    If that doesn't work, let us know if you can access the finder at all on the system, sufficient to run anything. If not, I fear it may be necessary to reinstall MacOS, though your earlier comment that you'd tried booting of the disc and nothing happened despite trying 3 that you have is not inpsiring confidence!
    Hopefully though, that'll get the ball rolling after a couple of weeks waiting!

  • Mini ppc w/ beachball problem and attached monitor going black frequently

    I am seriously considering replacing this mini. I believe as the poster yesterday concluded that the hard drive in this mini is on the verge of quitting. Reference beachball problem everytime any entry is made. I completely reformatted with zero overwrite and slowness was not cured. Drive is only about 30% of capacity. The attached monitor goes black (not to sleep) this will happen while data is being entered periodically many times a day. The monitor behaves perfectly when connected to another mini with same cables. I think there may be a video output problem. This unit is in a high demand area for making appointments, so I think it is time to replace although I don't want to because of software issues. I looked at external firewire comments, but so far I can't find the drives that will support being start up drives and the video out problem is still an issue. I have also thought of bringing my PPC iMac flat screen from home and upgrading at home, but it is 4-5 years old and I don't want to do this again in 6 months. Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks

    Have you run the Apple hardware test on it? Or if you have Applecare, the TechTools Deluxe test? To run the Apple hardware test, insert the first OS X disc that came with the system, which should say 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Reboot, holding the option key down. Choose the Apple hardware test, click the arrow pointing to the right, and follow directions. Does it identify any issues?
    If you click the blue Apple, and about this mac, does the memory show what it should be? If there were a memory issue with the RAM strip, where you were only getting reduced memory, that could contribute to the issues you're seeing.
    A number of people with slowing systems, with frequent beach balls, have used OnyX to clean up their system, which has made a performance difference. You can get it from http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/download.html . Run the activities on the maintenance and cleaning tabs, which may require a reboot. Does that help?
    One other thought, which is a stretch ... did you upgrade to 10.4.11 through the software update function or by installing the combo update? If by software update, you might want to download the combo version, and install it after you use OnyX. Repair permissions, install it, and repair permissions again, using Disk Utility. It's located at http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10411comboupdat eppc.html

  • Mac Mini PPC and Usb wifi dongle?

    So I have a ppc mac mini and I purchased a wifi dongle for it. (not the Belkin one)
    I have drivers for it that appear to be correct, everything installs fine.
    However when I go to network to configure the device there is no option to choose usb as a network interface. The only options are firewire, or internal modem.
    I'm sure this has been addressed but I've searched and search.

    Sorry wow been a long time since I was here, but things have progressed ... somewhat.
    Turns out there were specific drivers that I was not in possession of. The manufacturer supplied them and I thought all was good.
    Turns out I'm having another problem now that it took some time to figure out ...
    The dongle works for a time, but seems to get booted from my router or something after going to sleep or rebooting.
    The weird thing is that the dongle software itself and the mac os think its connected, it shows an IP address that isn't on my network.
    If I reboot the router and then reset my IP on the mac mini it will work until it goes to sleep or reboots.
    I updated my Linksys WRT54G to DDWRT to see if that would fix things but even with new firmware and reset settings only this mac is affected by this problem. Also the dongle doesn't do it on any other computer.
    So its mac mini/dongle/router specific ...
    thanks again for all the suggestions and help

  • Mac Mini (PPC) won't boot off install DVD

    I'm having a major issue with my 1.24GHZ G4 Mac Mini. What I want to do is reformat the HD and reinstall OSX. But for some bizarre reason the machine refuses to boot off any OSX install DVD I throw at. I've tried Jaguar and Panther as well. If I hold down the C key during reboot and wait for the Apple logo to come up, I get that but it goes no farther. I can hear the drive being accessed (and I know it's not fault because it works fine under OSX) and yet I end up getting stuck at that logo screen. I can reboot the system normally into OSX Tiger.
    I also strangely cannot partition the hard drive from within Disk Utility.
    Can anyone give advice?

    Possible options/questions...
    a) Have you tried using the original Install DVD that came with it?
    b) Have you tried booting into Single user mode and checked the drive? (Hold down Apple-S until it boots into text mode and when you finally get the prompt type 'fsck -fy' without the quotes).
    c) Also, you may wish to try resetting the PRAM immediately before booting from CD. Let it reset THREE times (hold down Apple-Option-P-R or WinKey-Alt-P-R until it has chimed 4 times) and then hold down the C key to boot from your Install DVD.

  • Dual Monitors? (Original Mac Mini PPC)

    I have a Vga splitter and have plugged two monitors in it has duplicated them is there anyway to extend the screens

    Not with the splitter. Yo need two seperate VGA outputs from the Mac.
    This may work as a second one:

  • Looking for installation manual for Airport / Bluetooth in Mac Mini (PPC)

    Hi,
    Last year I purchased a Mac Mini as an additional Mac. At the time, Wireless, and bluetooth were not available as a complete package from resellers. I bought the Airport / Bluetooth kit for the Mac Mini and want to install it.
    I have been searching for the Manual to download. Can anyone help me.
    BTW, I have a technical background, and have designed/built logic and RF electronics. But I want a guide, so as I do not assume.
    Thank you,
    John

    Welcome to the Apple discussion forums.
    Video showing how to take the mini apart can be found at http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html Note installation of the wireless/bluetooth isn't addressed, but getting into the box is shown.
    A memory replacement that does show the airport/bluetooth cards is at http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/82.13.0.html
    Perhaps with the other references, this will provide a basis to know what you're diving into.

    Is there a way to convert .cwk text files I saved from my iMac PPC so I can view them on my new iMac (intel chip)? I get a message when I try to open them now that says PowerPC applications are no longer supported.
