just download them both but how do u enter a actual chat room from either of them? can't seem to find where it says chat, enter you know the steps.

You can access AOL for free now if you have internet access. You can use their chat rooms.

i've been having problem downloading yahoo messenger beta or even adium. can't seem to figure out why so I was hoping someone here would know if its connected to Safari.

Hmm, uninstalling it should have rectified things. Did you also try rebooting after running the uninstall process?
If you did, do you have anything in the following folders:
Hard drive > Users > Your Username > Library > InputManagers
Hard drive > Users > Your Username > Library > Application Support > SIMBL
Hard drive > Library > InputManagers
Hard drive > Library > Application Support > SIMBL
Those folders may not exist, so it's not a problem if you can't find them. If you do find them, drag the contents of those folders onto your Desktop, completely quit Safari (Safari menu > Quit) and then relaunch Safari and try another download.

Adium and Yahoo instant messenger contact lists not working with Leopard

After I installed Leopard, I tried to run Adium. When I tried to click on the icon and pop up my contact list to select a contact, nothing happens. I am now only able to receive messages and reply to received messages. I cannot get my contact list to pop up when clicking the icon in the dock (like I did with Tiger).
I had the same issue when using the latest Yahoo! messenger for Mac. Anyone else seeing this, or know of a fix?

Hello tross415 and welcome to the Palm forums.
What you are seeing is, if I recall correctly, a bug from Palm webOS 1.3.1 that has not yet been addressed. If you launch Messaging on the Pre, and then select Preferences & Accounts > Add IM Acoun you will not get a button to add a Yahoo! IM account.
The work around for this issue, and to add Yahoo IM support to your Pre is to add a Yahoo email or calendar account. When you do, the IM account will also be created. That is the process that worked for me when Palm introduced Yahoo IM support with webOS 1.3.1.

Yahoo IM no longer working in Apple Messages.

My Yahoo IM is no longer working in Apple Messages. I am able to log in and send messages to my buddies, and they receive my messages. The problem is I do not receive any of their replies.
I have AOL, Jabber and iMessages working, its only Yahoo that is not working properly.
I tried deleting the account, restarting my computer and creating the account again and it still doesnt work.
I tested the yahoo account with other IM clients (Adium, Trillian) and it works fine.
Is there any way to restore/reinstall Messages without having a time machine backup?

You should be able to open the Applications folder and then use Time Machine and select just Messages app at a point when it appear to have been changed. (i.e. do just Messages)

Ok so my adium has worked like forever since I got it and like today it just freezes up after logging on to all my accounts (aim, msn, and yahoo) which it has never done before. All it does is log on and then the little color spinning wheel comes on and I have to force quit, no send error to apple, nothing. Anyone know what might be wrong?

Yahoo problems?

I was using yahoo messenger well and good until i installed some of the following software... adium, growl (it said adium "needs" it, and dos box)
now yahoo won't "work" it just quits unexpectedly and that's it, even i have already removed the said softwares... what can be done?
ive as well reinstalled ym after removing the said software and same problem....

ok, so ym did become stable this morning, now everything won't work (would quit unexpectedly)

To be clear what do you mean when you say "ym wont work" is it not opening at all or just still crashing?
I use Yahoo Messenger (for mac), Version 3.0 beta 1 (build 18274) and do not seem to have any problems with it , I presume your version is the same, or is it Messenger 1.0.1 for Macintosh? Get info on the application to be sure. if it is 1.0.1.
Make sure Yahoo is indeed quitclick on the Finder's Icon in the Dock,
when the window opens go to,~/Library/Caches/Yahoo messenger cache folder, move the folder to the trash.
Try YM, (it may take longer to open) any better?

Yahoo keeps disconnecting on ichat on lion 10.7

I am trying to use yahoo on ichat and its been working fine for the past days but today it keeps disconnecting and i cannot use it. when i connect to yahoo thru Adium it owrks fine. any ideas?

Ports 80 and 443 should be open in most routers anyway.
I cannot say I have seen a Table where there can be multiple Trigger Ports.
If you are using iChat 3 then it can be written this was.
Trigger 5678 (UDP only) as this is the Visible Invite and Start of A/V stuff
Incoming ports are then 5060 (if iChat 3) then the group (16384-16403 for iChat 3) 16393-16402 (Smaller group but inside the iChat 3 ones)
Text Chatting in AIM is on port 5190 TCP by default in iChat versions prior to 6 as is the Login.
If you Change the Login port (to 443) then the Text chat moves
File Sharing on AIM needs port 5190 on UDP
I would tend to heave the Login Port trigger the File Sharing port.
As you can set up the Jabber one the way you have I would not alter it.
As already stated I am not seeing this here in the UK (I get pushed to a UK Yahoo Server)
I am also using UPnP in my router.

Yahoo Widgets Not Functioning

Several months ago Yahoo Widgets malfunctioned on my Macbook Pro. When I activate it, the "gears" icon in the Desktop menu bar appears for a brief moment or two, then disappears. The app does not appear to be running as no widgets are visible nor does the widget dock open. Clicking directly on a widget does nothing. I've tried to get Yahoo to look into this but their advice is to dump the pref files. Duh. I tried that and nothing changed. I've also deleted and re-installed both the app and the most recent Java update with no result. Could this be a result of a recent java upgrade? It appears as though Mac's widget engine has also had some recent failure– could the two be caused by the same problem? Advice, please!

apparently, they have added encryption to all their services, including messenger. I have also heard on another forum that they are no longer updating the program for macs and are recommending people use ichat....however, the older ichats don't support yahoo, only the newer OS does. Adium and Trillium also fail to log into yahoo chat as well.

Why is Yahoo contact showing as "unknown" ?

I didn't notice any problems initially, but after using Lion for nearly 2 months now, I suddenly have Yahoo contacts in iChat who are not displaying a status when they're online. I've confirmed that their status is set to available and it shows up normally in Adium. But in iChat, their status just shows as "unknown".
What's the deal?
I tried removing all iChat preferences from the ~/Library/Preferences folder. No change.
Any ideas?

I have a possible.
Taking an AIM login as an example.
This has two statuses you can set. Green/Available and Red/Away.
If you don't touch your Keyboard or Mouse for 10 Minutes your Buddy List indicator will go Amber/Idle.
The AIM app itself on PC also Displays Away and Idle but iChat does not (You can mouse over your Buddy to find out though)
AIM Accounts can also be set to Invisible in iChat 4 and above, in a sort of Over and above sort of way giving you effectively 8 states.
I know the Yahoo app (For Mac (beta 3) ) can log you in as Invisible and be set to Invisible once launched.
I have not played with it enough to know all the Buddy Status settings/colours
I would guess it is one of these states that iChat cannot display.
Which one of the 8 potentials will take some finding out. (And that is not excluding Multiple Logins caused by the Web Version of Yahoo Messenger or Adium or ProteusX or the Yahoo app itself being logged in as well).

Yahoo and MSN Messenger in iChat

If you can get the Yahoo IM app for Mac to work (It is still in Beta and has been for Years) then it is the only direct way.
Tokbox is a Web Browser Based Chat site that allows you to use your Camera. (It uses the Flash Plug-in)
It has the advantage in that you can link in your existing Buddy Lists.
Mebeam is a less formal site that does similar (Lees the Buddy List Linking)
The MSN App will only Video Chat if you are linked to the correct Microsoft Server (I forget the name exactly)
ProteusX and Adium are both essentially text Based Mac Apps that can join multiple IM Services.
I believe Adium now uses a link to MeBeam to do Video Chats (I have not tested this)

If it's the Yahoo Messenger app that doesn't work for you, then consider downloading and using the Adium app.
The Adium UI is somewhat cryptic, but the tool does work with Yahoo IM and a whole bunch of other ways that are commonly used to chat.
But yes, more details on the errors or problems or dialog boxes or messages are needed, if there's something going wrong with Yahoo Messenger app.

Yahoo Messenger stops working on 10.5.7

I downloaded the new update but now Yahoo Messenger (both the standalone application and Adium) keeps disconnecting. Is there any way to resolve this?

Further, I have tested the headset with Yahoo Messenger in Windows and its working perfectly.
So, I guess the problem is with Yahoo Messenger and/or 10.5.7 update I guess, as it worked perfectly till day before yesterday, before installing the update. I can still connect Yahoo in Mac. Also dug in the console to find a set of error messages in the yahoo messenger log:

Yahoo Messenger: Display Icons not showing

I'm using Yahoo Messenger 3.0 beta 4 on OS 10.4.11. Only about half the display images in my contacts list are showing, no matter whether the contact is online or offline.
However on my iPhone, Yahoo Messenger shows the display image for almost every contact. This means that Yahoo on my Mac is not displaying contact images correctly.
I tired deleting and re-installing Yahoo and deleting plist files, this did not solve the problem.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Which plist files did you delete?
Did you repair permissions & restart your computer after all the installations/re-installations?
Remember you are using a _*BETA = buggy*_ version of YIM. You may need to revert to a previous version or use Adium.
YIM is not Apple software. Suggest that you deal with YIM tech support and/or forums - Messenger for Mac Help and Messenger for Mac Community/Forums

Mac to Yahoo, MSN, GoogleTalk

Hi,
I recently bought a Macbook. All my friends use windows, and have yahoo, msn or gtalk, but now i find that it is almost impossible to have video conferencing and voice chat with yahoo nor msn from mac. Is ther any application that i can use to do with voice & video chat with windows only (who do not have mac) yahoo, msn and gtalk users. I tried setting up jabber account from iChat, I have used Adium, and also tried Gizmo, but none of them provide neat solutions to this problem. Is there a neat fix to this?
Also, it is not possible to ask all of my friends to download some other type of chatting client like skype or anything, cos it's pointless for them. So the fix has to be on my mac!! Please help!

Thanks for your reply.
I have just found out what's wrong. I went to the 'more info' section of my Chitchat application and it took me to a link where it explained that Yahoo Chat has ditched chatting with the Java protocol and chatters can now only chat via the Yahoo Messenger protocol, which is Yahoo Instant Messenger with Voice. Unfortunately Yahoo doesn't provide a platform for Yahoo Voice for Macintosh computers. Though the original link I went to provides another link to a thing called 'Adium' from which a Mac can access Yahoo Chat's new protocol, although it's not fully developed yet.
Oh...and thanks so much for letting me know about the Java update release. I did not know that I have to upgrade my system first to recieve the latest update information.
