Yahoo IMAP support ... sneaky!

I found several references to IMAP support by Yahoo about a year ago (imap.next.mail.yahoo.com, imap.mail.yahoo.com) that worked for a while and then stopped, presumably because of the resources required to support that protocol on top of pop. Then, with their offer of IMAP access to even free Yahoo acounts because of Apple, I read somewhere the new server was imap.apple.mail.yahoo.com. Problem is, it only works IF you use the Yahoo configuration option in Mail settings. If you use a regular IMAP configuration option, it does not work. (Why would I want to use Other? Because I dont want the @yahoo.com as the reply-to address).
So, it seems that behind the scenes, the iPhone is configuring to the correct (and unknown to us) Yahoo IMAP server OR it is embedding some sort of prefix/suffix to our IDs that authorize it to log on to the Yahoo IMAP server ONLY if you use the iPhone configuration tool. I am speculating. Any thoughts?

Someone who has an iPhone should connect it to a WiFi network on which is a computer running an Ethernet Packet sniffer, and then capture a connection from the iPhone to Yahoo mail.
For ordinary POP3 and SMTP access Yahoo use SSL versions, the IMAP SSL port is normally 993 but they could be using a non-standard port. They could also be doing something strange to the authentication, e.g. using MD5 instead of just password or something else like adding additional text to the password e.g. it sends apple.password instead of password, again a packet sniffer like Ethereal might reveal this.
Unfortunately the iPhone is not yet available in the UK so I cannot do this testing myself.
Google should wake up and add push IMAP support themselves, fancy letting Yahoo grab all the glory.

  • Yahoo IMAP support is awful

I've posted about this here repeatedly and never gotten confirmation that anyone else is seeing the problem, but it's getting worse, so if nothing else, perhaps that can save someone else all the time I have wasted on this issue.  Yahoo's IMAP support is ridiculously flaky, and should probably be avoided until it stabilizes.  I have an "swbell.net" email address, which after a chain of acquisitions is now managed by Yahoo.  When I enter my email address it sets up IMAP email by default.  I can't check the server name right now because I am once again locked out of the account, and at this point am wondering if it will ever come back.
Once the email is set up and synchronized, one of 3 things happens on a regular basis:
New email simply stops coming in, with no indication as to why
I start getting repeated login attempt failures because it says my credentials were rejected
The entire contents of my inbox simply disappears.  Sometimes a resync will go get all the email again, and sometimes it won't, but it causes email to get "orphaned", leading to steady growth in the disk usage for email and eventually to the app install failure if not cleaned up
When I give up and delete the account to try to re-add it again (after manually cleaning up the crap left behind because of #3 above), I typically get a login failure with the following information: "Invalid security token: N NNNN N" (where those 'N's are numbers).  Once it took until the next morning before I could get back in.  This time, it IS the next morning and I STILL can't get back in.  Like I said, it may simply never come back this time.
I've been round and round on the phone with both AT&T (my actual ISP, but Yahoo manages the email aspects of the account) and Palm, and while Palm was definitely more knowledgeable and attempted to be more helpful, in the end no one really knew what was wrong.  AT&T refused to even believe that they provide IMAP support, and the IMAP server has "palm" in its name, so its clear this server was brought online specifically to handle IMAP support for the Pre, but I don't know if its available to free Yahoo email accounts, or only ot paid ISP accounts through AT&T and others.
The first 2 above seem like they almost have to be a Yahoo server problem, but the fact that stuff is getting orphaned in #3 above sounds like a bug in the Pre's email app -- it's not clear whether the emptying of the inbox is some bad response from the server or a misinterpretation of an error by the email app. The failures when I try to re-establish the account are curious, becausethey seem to imply a handshake problem -- the IMAP server is up and responding, but doesn't like what the Pre's email client sent.  But the fact that it comes and goes would really seem to point towards a server issue, because I seriously doubt that the email client randomly varies what it sends to the server.
I think at this point I've probably got no choice but to give up and go to POP.  Email needs to just work, and not be something I am constantly fighting with and wasting time on -- that completely defeats the convenience of having email on my phone to begin with.  I really like the benefit of alternate folder support with IMAP, but Yahoo has a pretty good mobile webmail interface, so I guess I can always check other folders that way.
Any insight here from Palm support or other users fighting this same problem is more than welcome.  But if nothing else, hopefully this will save someone else from wasting hours of their life on this nonsense.

OK, so the plot thickens.  I decided to give up and set up POP, and when I did that, my login got rejected even then the first couple of times!  Now that I think about it, I've had times when I've been unable to log in to webmail from the browser because my credentials were rejected, even though I know they are correct, because I use them all the time on various PCs.  The 3rd time it eventually accepted the login for POP, with the warning that it couldnt validate SMTP settings and that as a result I might not be able to send email from the Pre.  And sure enough, after testing it turns out that I cannot in fact send mail -- my creds get rejected by the SMTP server.  Out of frustration I removed the account yet again and tried setting it up with IMAP again (in other words sticking with the defaults for my email address), and that time it worked.
I'm really beginning to wonder now if there's not some issue with SSL communications on the Pre.  I can't think of any other reason why both POP and IMAP would fail intermittently, using completely separate servers, as well as even logging in via the web interface on the Pre's browser.
Getting email on my phone was one of the biggest draws for me of going to a true smart phone, and man, has this been a huge letdown.  I don't know where the problem lies, but some link in this chain of technology is simply not ready for prime time.

  • Problem with Yahoo IMAP and Mail...

I'm having an issue with my Yahoo IMAP setup and mail on my desktop:
I have set up my yahoo email account with IMAP on both my iphone 4 and with mail on macbook pro.  It has worked fine, all my folders are synced up on both devices and everything runs well except for one small problem.  When I read an email on my Iphone, the mail program on my macbook pro never knows.  Every day I come back to my computer, and all of my yahoo emails remain as "new" and "unread" even though I had checked all of them on my iphone.  Its very weird because the opposite is not true - in other words - if I check a Yahoo email on my macbook pro, then my Iphone recognizes it and will show it is "read" as soon as I read it on macbook pro.
I also have an IMAP work email hosted by gator and a gmail account and I do not have this problem, its only on my yahoo account.  I have tried the following settings:
    Incoming server - imap.mail.yahoo.com
    Outgoing server - smtp.mail.yahoo.com
    Incoming server - apple.imap.mail.yahoo.com
    Outgoing server - smtp.apple.mail.yahoo.com
I have set everything to ssl with ports 465 and 993.  Still keep getting this same problem that my macbook pro does not recognize when emails have been read on my iphone (for only the yahoo account).
Anybody else having this problem or have any suggestions on how to fix??

    http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mobile/comms/mail/imap-01.html
To set up IMAP on your mobile device please use these settings:
    Incoming Server - imap.mail.yahoo.com
    Outgoing Server - smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Incoming Port - 993 (requires SSL)
    Outgoing Port - 465 (requires SSL/TLS)
Username: full email address (for example, [email protected] or [email protected])
Password: the password you login to Yahoo! with.
If you are having trouble setting up IMAP on your mobile device we recommend reviewing your phones instruction manual or contacting your mobile provider for support.

You can use the following information to configure IMAP with many mail clients. If you encounter difficulties, we suggest contacting your mail client's customer support department for further instructions -- we're unable to provide assistance with configuring mail clients not listed here.
Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server - requires SSL:     imap.gmail.com
    Use SSL: Yes
    Port: 993
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - requires TLS:     smtp.gmail.com (use authentication)
    Use Authentication: Yes
Use STARTTLS: Yes (some clients call this SSL)
    Port: 465 or 587
Account Name:     your full email address (including @gmail.com) Google Apps users, please enter username@your_domain.com
Email Address:     your full Gmail email address ([email protected]) Google Apps users, please enter username@your_domain.com
    Password:     your Gmail password
Please note that if your client does not support SMTP3 authentication, you won't be able to send mail through your client using your Gmail address.
Also, if you're having trouble sending mail but you've confirmed that encryption is active for SMTP in your mail client, try to configure your SMTP server on a different port: 465 or 587.

  • Yahoo imap mail

I have been successfully using Yahoo imap mail within Mac Mail for years, but now it won't work.  What's changed?  How can I use Yahoo mail in my mail program??

    Hello Ahji,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your Yahoo! email is not working as expected in Mail on your Mac. To begin troubleshooting, I would suggest reading over and working through the suggested steps in the attached article.

  • Lion Mail Yahoo IMAP Sync Inconsistent

Observed behavior: Mail is syncing with Yahoo IMAP every five minutes, but when I delete or mark messages as read from the Yahoo website, iPhone or any other device, the Mail app will not reflect these changes even after the auto or manul sync. In order to force Mail to sync accurately, I have to take the account offline and then switch it back online. Then, Mail syncs correctly.
If I force the re-sync WITHOUT first taking the account offline, the sync is not accurate. Even if new messages appear in the mailbox, the other deleted and marked-read messages are not accurately reflected in the sync. Again, the only way to make it accurate is to take offline and bring back online. Of course, if I restart Mail, this also resolves the issue. Restarting Mail is the same thing as far as the Yahoo IMAP server is concerned.
This problem is easily reproducible. I have tried a number of remedies.
    1. I deleted the original Yahoo IMAP account and added a new Yahoo IMAP account with a new name multiple times. No change.
    2. I restarted my Mac to see if this helps. Other than the temporary effect of restarting Mail, this does not change a thing.
    3. I have looked on the Yahoo site, and well... Here I am.
    4. I also looked on Gmail site, almost more helpful.
    5. Finally, I looked on the Apple Support Communities but cannot find an answer.
So, let's see if there are others having the same issue and maybe there is a solution somewhere.
    Thank you.

This is definitely not Yahoo-specific, nor is it new.  Definitely seems to be a bug in Mail.app.  This has been happening at least since 10.5 (am now on 10.8.2), and I have a GoDaddy hosted IMAP account.
Same symptoms...I delete emails on my Mac in Mail.app.  I've gotten into the habit of forcing a manual sync.  The emails disappear from the Mac, but several minutes or sometimes many minutes later, if I look on my iPhone or iPad, the messages have not been deleted.  If I subsequently go look on my Mac, or at the server through a webmail browser - they're back.
However, if I delete the emails from my iPhone or iPad - they really do get deleted.
As stated up above - quitting and reopening Mail.app can force a real sync that gets things going back in sync...it seems like maybe Mail.app somehow forgets to actually sync...so when this starts happening - i.e. I notice deleted emails still appear on my iPad - if I quit mail and reopen it, it also shows the previously deleted email.  So the symptoms seem like there is a "cache" of actions (deletes) in Mail.app that is not getting processed to the server.  When you quit, this list seems to get flushed and whatever is causing Mail.app not to sync to the server gets remedied and on restart, the not-deleted emails show up because Mail.app now syncs with the server.  Occasionally it seems Mail.app somehow can come out of this without being restarted...I'm not sure if that happens when it's "kicked" by some other event, e.g. an incoming message, to sync.
    Extremely annoying.

  • Suddenly can no longer receive Yahoo IMAP in Mail

I have suddenly become unable to receive Yahoo IMAP mail in my Mail client in Yosemite on my MacBook Pro (13"  Early 2011).
I can send mail, but not receive it. I suspect a problem on the Apple/OS X side, because my iOS devices are still receiving Yahoo IMAP mail.
I tried deleting and re-adding my Yahoo account. Now, not only can't I receive mail, I can't see any mail in my Inbox! Yet, I can see all my Yahoo folders and their contents while using Mail.

    Hello Paul,
Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities.
It does seem like you're encountering an issue with email that's isolated to your Yahoo IMAP account in Mac OS X.
For a situation like this, start with the troubleshooting tips in the section of this article called "Mail Connection Doctor shows one or more red dots in the account Status column:"
OS X Mail: Troubleshooting sending and receiving email messages
This article contains a variety of steps that can help resolve an issue like the one you're seeing.
    All the best,

  • Yet another dimension of Yahoo IMAP suckage

Just when I thought I'd had all the frustration I can handle with the terrible integration of IMAP support for Yahoo accounts (and as stated before I really have no idea if the problem resides with AT&T/Yahoo or Palm), I discovered today that there's yet another possible weirdness that can happen -- duplication of the entire inbox.  What I had happen multiple times is that a new message would come in, and when it went to fetch it, it would also fetch all email again from the last 7 days (the cutoff I have set, because as often as I have problems and have to delete the account, there's no point loading any more than that), such that I had 2 copies of every message.  Then if I manually refresh (sometimes I had to leave the inbox and go back, sometimes not) it would properly remove the duplicates and set the message count correctly again.
Here's the part that has to be a bug on the Pre, well-documented on this forum by now -- every time this happened, even once the message count was back to the proper value, the disk space used for email grew.  So those duplicate messages were being orphaned in /var/luna/data/emails every time, taking away valuable application space made critically important by the failure/extreme delay in addressing the app space limitation issue.
I have no idea if it's done doing this yet.  I just sent a test message and it didn't happen that time.  I have already deleted and re-added the account once and it happened again twice after that, so it's not some weirdness with the account unless it recreated itself again right away.
We really ought to be past this type of issue by now.  IMAP email is not exactly brand new technology, and plenty of folks are having issues with POP as well.  We ought to be reaching a point of maturity in WebOS and the core applications that makes it a solid foundation on which to add features and develop apps for.  But it's just not.  Every new update, while it fixes some things, breaks others, and some of these systemic and long-standing issues have yet to be addressed (again, except for the disk space growth, I don't know for sure that the Pre is doing anything wrong, but that alone is still a huge issue that doesn't seem like it would be hard to pinpoint).  I said from the beginning I was willing to wait for this phone to grow into its potential, and I still am, but I expected more progress by now.
    -- robert
Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)

Just an update.  The loading of duplicate messages appears to have stopped, at least for now, but things are still not working normally.  Some messages are simply missed until I do a manual refresh.  In other words, say I get message A at 1pm.  I can see it in my inbox via webmail, but it's not on the Pre.  Then I get message B at 1:30.  I see it after message A in my inbox in webmail, but on the Pre, I get a notification for B, and see B in my inbox, but A is not there until I do a manual refresh, and at that point the order even on the Pre confirms that A arrived first.  This has happened twice this afternoon, and I can't say as I've every seen that behavior prior to today.  I really am beginning to wonder if email is ever going to work properly on this thing...

  • Sent items on yahoo Imap not synchronising with sent items on yahoo mail outlook 2011

I had a problem where the my yahoo imap  which I set up with Outlook 2011 was not synchronizing with Yahoo from the web.
I found the solution today by switching from Sent items( Server) to Sent( Server).
    1. Go to tools
    2. Accounts
    3.Advance options
    4. Folders
    5. Then you will see sent. Drop down the window and you will see what I have shown in the screen shot below.
It worked for me and now all my emails are synchronising very well.

the last sentence should read...."this folder do however only have the sent emails that was sent from my imac, and not the emails that was sent from my ipad".
I want all my sent items on all my devices the same, in other words the should come from the server and not the specific device I'm using

Nope, no correlation between them (other than password)

  • How to configure Yahoo IMAP with ATT.Yahoo service

I'm hearing about using Yahoo IMAP push server, but can find no such option about configuring my current ATT.Yahoo service for anything but POP/SMTP. Where should I be looking? Thanks

I could find this info nowhere so hopefully this will help someone with the same problem I was having.
In case anyone with an ATT.YAHOO account formerly SBC, or Pacbell, etc. You have to manually set up an IMAP account. So if your e-mail address is "[email protected]", you would Add an account, choose Yahoo Y! Mail and enter your [email protected] address and your ATT.YAHOO POP password. It will confirm the account and you will now have IMAP Push e-mail on your ATT account. But your ATT.Yahoo account (as far as I can tell) must remain a standard POP account on OS X Mail on your Mac. So you don't want to synch your iPhone ATT.Yahoo Mail accounts.

  • Yahoo IMAP via Mail.app

Has anyone got this to work, I read on this forum that the yahoo imap server used by the iPhone is imap.apple.mail.yahoo.com, just wondered if anyone knew the port and if anyone had been able to get mail.app talking to the yahoo IMAP server. Would be great to have the mac and iPhone alking to the same IMAP server.
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers
    Jonathan

There is an option in the 'Advanced' section of the account setup to delete the messages from the server after a specified period rather than immediately on download; you could leave them for a week or whatever, then they will still be there when the iPhone accesses them.

  • IMAP support is ON in GMAIL even if you cannot see it in preferences!

I was pleasantly surprised to find that IMAP support is fully enabled in my gmail account, even though I cannot see it in the settings page! Try it....your mileage may vary!
QUESTION: Having now synchronised my entire Gmail account on one computer I want to copy all of the synchronised/downloaded mail *AND* the mail/account settings from one computer to another.....so as to avoid having to repeat the 1.5GB download on the other machine.
How to do that? Is it "just" a matter of copying ~/Library/Mail and replacing the folder on the other machine? Anything else that I need to know/copy?

...in case you have not discovered it yet...getting to see the preference in Settings just needs you to set English US as your language.....not that there is any need because there is just one meaningful setting (Enable/Disable IMAP)...and it is ENABLEd by default!

  • Unable to connect on email yahoo Imap?

All passwords are correct, and I have been into Apple today, and whilst it seemed to pick up emails in the shop.  Once home it hasn't.
We deleted the btinternet.com email in Apple serveral times, and Added account, eventully it worked...strange, but it did work.
But once at home it didn't!
I have Ipad and iphone and can pick up emails on these, but these are both POP accounts.
Everytime I add my email account, it becomes Yahoo Imap....and think this is what is causing the problem.
I can't even set up the account to a POP, because everytime I start the "add account "it automically becomes an Imap account on  my Macbook Pro.
    (all software is upto date)
Please can someone give me some advice and help.
Would adding apple.imap.yahoo.com  help on the outgoing and incoming server?
thanks in anticaption, that someone can help.

Re: Yahoo IMAP server - Rejected Password
Apr 16, 2013 1:49 AM (in response to Renesisdriver)
For BT users I think I have a workaround (that may work for all clients). Not my ideas but a combination of suggestions given by other users.
A combination of the following seems to have worked for me.
Go to "Spotlight" on your Mac, top right corner. Type "keychain access". When the pop up screen appears, make sure in the left column you have both the following tabs selected. "Login" & "passwords". From there look through the list in the columns you have and delete EVERY mention of "yahoo" i.e. "smpt.mail.yahoo.com". Basically, if you see a line with Yahoo in it, then get rid of it.
Go to your Yahoo email account on your browser, before you login deselect the tick boxthat asks you if you want to stay signed in. After logging in, log out.
Go to "Mail" on your Mac and open up the prefernce pane. Go to accounts and channge the servers for your BT Yahoo email accounts to the following.
    Use:
    Incoming Server - apple.imap.mail.yahoo.com
    Outgoing Server - apple.smtp.mail.yahoo.com
    4. Restart "Mail". On some of my yahoo email accounts this worked instantaneously for me. On others it took around 5 minutes for the account to start working again. 12 hours in and the problem seems to be gone.
    Good Luck to all.
    this worked for me, thank-you
