Yahoo Mail Worm/Virus?

This morning my Yahoo mail account sent out a series of Spam emails to random people from my address list. No one was logged into the account at the time this happened. My wife and I routinely access the account from a PC running Norton 360 and from two different Macs. So we're fairly confident none of these computers are infected with anything. I called AT&T/Yahoo tech support, and they indicated that the account appears to have been hacked by some sort of bot... and they thought the issue may be with my iPhone and the fact that it has no antivirus protection.
I took a look at the full headers of the Spam emails and was able to track the originating IP address to Sunnyvale, CA (Yahoo's headquarters). I then compared this with old emails sent from both my home PC and my iPhone. Only the iPhone generated emails went through the Sunnyvale IPs. The emails sent from all three computers on my home network originated from local IPs.
So, bottom line... this leads me to believe that it was indeed my iPhone that somehow triggered the emails. I was driving at the time the emails were sent... so I know I didn't click anything, open any emails, or take any other actions that would have triggered the Spam.
Any idea what's going on here? Should I be concerned that my iPhone has a worm or virus that is triggering these messages? I'm particularly trying to determine if this is just a worm or if an actual person has hacked my account. I changed the password... but that password was also used for some other accounts of mine too. My biggest concern at this point is the potential for identity theft.

Sorry, but what a crock.
I seriously doubt this is a worm or virus on your iPhone. If so, you will be the first.
Nothing can be installed on an iPhone from a received email, from a website, or from a received MMS except for a photo, and I haven't read about any viruses or worms being included with a JPEG file. Unless your iPhone has been hacked/jailbroken and you have installed unofficial software on your iPhone from an unknown or untrusted source, it would be some trick for a virus or worm to be installed on your iPhone especially since there are no viruses that infect or affect OS X, and the iPhone runs an optimized version of OS X.
Spammers spoof email addresses - using a random/valid email address to appear as the sending email address for the spam usually making use of valid email addresses gathered from their "known good" email address list which is rotated from what is a huge list. A significant portion of spam is generated from Windows computers that have been taken over remotely by spammers with email generated with a spoofed email address without the user's knowledge.
I venture to say the emails were not generated from your iPhone. More than likely your email address has been spoofed by a spammer only - your email account has not been hacked but it can't hurt to change your account's password.

  • I've just had my yahoo mail on my ipad hacked. I've changed my yahoo mail password. Is there an virus scan apps for iPad that are recommended for use?

I've just had my yahoo mail on my ipad hacked. It seems to have used all my contact on iPad to and from. Is there any virus software for iPad I can use. I've changed my password for my yahoo account last night  already, but it seems emails are still going out. I've just been notified emails are still going out this morning

Your iPad doesn't have a virus.
Perhaps those mails were ones that were queued and just went out? Or maybe they rehacked your account?
mine was hacked a couple of weeks ago and they just mailed and ran.
You might want to change your password again.
it's also possible that your address is just being spoofed.

  • Can't see who emails are from in BT Yahoo Mail Inb...

I am having a problem in that the "FROM" column in my Inbox (and all the other email folders) has recently started showing as blank for all my emails. However on my BT Yahoo Homepage the Yahoo Mail Preview box does still show who the emails are from.
I suspect that this is a problem with my computer rather than with BT Yahoo Mail but does anyone know how to fix it ?
    Thanks

    Hi. Welcome to the forums.
What browser are you using ? I personally use Firefox, Opera, Chrome or Safari with IE9 very infrequently. Maybe give a different a try to see what happens,.
As you indicated, it does seem to be a browser issue, maybe due to a security product update - what are you using for anti-virus or security product ?

  • How do I get firefox 3.5 back? Firefox 4 can't find yahoo.mail URL. Using your suggestions has caused me to loose my system tray icons and printers from my computer altogether and my system restore will no longer work either.

Firefox 4.0 cannot find the Yahoo mail URL. Working with the Verizon tech we were able to get Internet Explorer to finaly find the yahoo mail web site. But not luck with Firefox 4.0 .
Since trying your suggestions to make firefox 4 find the Yahoo mail URL. I have noticed that all of my system tray icons except the Panda anti virus and volume control icons have disapeared. My system restore will not restore and printers are gone altogether. How do I get the old firefox and all i've lost back.

  • 10.6.8, Safari 5.1, Yahoo Mail, Hopeless?

I am just about fed up with how dysfunctional Yahoo Mail is on my Mac.  I'm using the latest version of Safari that can be used on 10.6.8 and Yahoo mail is just abysmal.  Slow, slow, and slow, even when it works.  Often, it just doesnt.  Buttons fail to do anything.  I cant compose, forward, empty trash, or empty spam.  I kill the window, open up a new one and usually can get it to work, but it is so slow as to be just horrific.
Is there ANY way to get Yahoo mail to work on Safari in a modern sense?  ANY way at all?
    PLEASE help.

You may want to check with Yahoo support. A friend had issues after one of their redesigns and called them, and they were able to hep him out of it.
I have Safari 5.1.7 on an iMac running 10.6.8 and, even after the latest Yahoo redesign, have no problems accessing my mail through yahoo.
We should check for any other issues that could be at play:
    1) Do you have any "pay-for" anti-virus, internet security, or one of those awfful "I'll clean your Mac" programs installed?
    2) Are you running any Safari extensions?
    3) Are you using third-party backup software such as those that come bundled with some external hard drives?
However, I agree with Kirk: web mail access is awkward and not as secure as using a mail client like Apple Mail. This is especailly true if you have a relatively slow internet service. And, like Kirk, I've tested yahoo e-mail handling on Apple Mail and it works fast and reliably.
PS: I only use my yahoo account when I need a "throw-away" e-mail address.

  • Attachments yahoo mail

    Hi,
I have Yahoo mail and I use Firefox. I'm just wondering how opening attachments works with Yahoo mail.
Today I opened an attachment and it gave a preview of what the attachment was.
Does this preview mean that the attachment has downloaded onto my computer or am I viewing it through a browser on the Yahoo server? I'm worried about downloading viruses!

The preview would not be downloaded to your computer directly however, you could still contract a virus. You could download a year of Norton anti-virus for $50 as well as a download free trials.

  • File attachment in yahoo mail does not appeare in Firefox 4, but IE & other web browsers show correctly.

Before I install Firefox 4, I have been use Firefox 3.6 and when I was checking my yahoo mail, there was not any problem to view or download file attachment.
After installing Firefox 4, when I receive a new mail with file attachment, like as video, or document, I can not see the attachment to download it. but with other web browsers like IE, I can see the attachment of the email.

    Hi!
People using a Trend Micro virus scanner should disable some webmail function. You can find the solution [http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-33677-can-t-download-attachments-on-my-yahoo-email here]
I do not use Trend Micro, but have the same issues. I just found my "AdBlock Plus" add-on was stopping the attachment download. What you should do to see if this is your problem too: disable AdBlock Plus, restart firefox and see if your problem is solved. Now enable AdBlock Plus again and restart Firefox.
To fix this problem: In Firefox, click on Add-ons, go to AdBlock Plus, go to Options, click on Filters--> reset statistics. Go to your attachment, click on the attachment (it will fail to download of course). Go back to AdBlock Plus and sort the statistics for "Hits". Now you can see which filter is blocking your attachment download. Disable this filter and you problem is solved!
    Regards!

I have windows7/8 and use att.yahoo mail. when I receive an email with a picture in the body, the picture does not display, this started happening after fire fox latest upgrade

If images are missing then check that you do not block images from some domains.
*Tap the Alt key or press F10 to show the Menu bar.
Check the permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab in "Tools > Page Info > Permissions"
Check "Tools > Page Info > Media" for blocked images
*Select the first image link and use the cursor Down key to scroll through the list.
*If an image in the list is grayed and "<i>Block Images from...</i>" has a checkmark then remove this checkmark to unblock images from this domain.
Make sure that you do not block (third-party) images, the <b>permissions.default.image</b> pref on the <b>about:config</b> page should be 1.
Make sure that you haven't enabled a High Contrast theme in the Windows/Mac Accessibility settings.
Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own colors.
*Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Colors : [X] "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above"
Note that these settings affect background images.

  • Can't attach documents to yahoo mail anymore

hey, everyone. i used to be able to attach files to my yahoo email by clicking attach file and choosing the file (whether it's a photo, pages doc, numbers file, etc).
now, for some reason, when i choose attach file from the yahoo mail page and the finder window pops up, all of my pages and numbers documents can't be chosen. they're in a light gray color and i can't click on them. i have no idea what could've caused this. i did search around the forums and ran disk utility and repaired disk permissions but that didn't do a thing.
i'd appreciate any advice y'all could give me.

fyi, so i call apple care support and find out that this is a normal security feature of leopard. they told me that it's designed to help keep mac users from passing on a virus to others via email. just hit file, compress to create a zip version of the file and then attach the zip file.

  • Mozilla just stopped working with Yahoo and yahoo mail properly, any ideas?

For whatever reason yahoo apparently stopped working properly sometime in the last week. When I go to yahoo.com the site loads but I can't move the stories to the left or the right as it just shows the little loading circle going around. I also noticed that trying to log in to yahoo mail is doing the same with the loading circle.
This was not happening a week ago and I have ran virus and malware scanners multiple times to no avail. The only thing I can think of is Java tried to update yesterday and it failed for whatever reason so I just tried updating java manually and it it installed fine.
Any and all help is appreciated, Thanks.

  • Hello, iam using the latest version of firefox, whenever i login into my yahoo mail account i get a stop script error, the details of the error script is mentioned below , please suggest how to stop this : STOP ERROR

Hello, iam using the latest version of firefox, whenever i login into my yahoo mail account i get a stop script error, the details of the error script is mentioned below , please suggest how to stop this
the website is www.mail.yahoo.com. i was getting the same STOP script error every now and then in firefox 6 as well

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

  • Why can't I use Yahoo mail? It won't delete any emails. Google chrome does it right. Fix it or you will lose our business

Yesterday, Aug. 22, Mozilla suffered a massive & complete breakdown in handling Yahoo. Originally I thought it was a virus. I immediately switched to Google Chrome & worked on it w/o difficulty all day long. Yahoo was pushing all data/articles to the left side of the screen. That fixed today, Aug. 23. HOWEVER, the problem with Yahoo mail persists. Out of the blue, it's impossible to delete any Yahoo emails on Mozilla. If you single click to select a list of emails to be deleted, they open automatically. There's no "delete" at the top of the screen to get rid of it. It's very annoying. Somebody's messing with your system (alone). Google Chrome & Microsoft Explorer worked just fine all day. FIX IT!

YES!!! IT WORKED!!! THANK GOD! Mozilla is so much more fun than Google Chrome--- All my bookmarks were saved & my passwords, too! And now my Yahoo Mail is working beautifully again! What a relief!

  • Latest worm virus

I have been getting all of the e-mail's that are infected with the latest worm virus. I know I don't need to worry about infecting my computer, mainly because I delete them right away. But I want to know if I can stop them from coming? I get 1-2 every 10 minutes! Yesterday I couldn't access my e-mail at all. I had to access it through webmail on a Windows computer. As soon as I deleted them I was able to access e-mail's on my computer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you exchange email with a large number of Windows users that have your email address in their address book and if any of these users have been infected with this Windows virus, the virus is sending email from the infected user's computer to every contact in the user's address book which is how these viruses spread.
It is either due to infected PCs or these messages are spam and the only way to prevent spam is by contacting your ISP or email account provider who can block the IP address of the sender to prevent the sending from sending any email from their computer to your ISP's or email account provider's domain.
